What do you mean when you say literally yourself?

Like, Royal Revival and Where Our Worlds Collide both have you having been previously someone else (either having reincarnated into who you are now or having lost your powers and memory) but you are still technically pulled from your own world without having died as the you you are now.

Then there are some where you are still yourself but gain a ton of magical abilities from some deity or wizard from that world. You're still you and always have been, but have gone through changes that could very well make you very different in terms of abilities and possibly even appearance.

Then there's this War of the Zodiac Brides WIP CYOA that seems to imply your bloodline is connected to some sort of magic power, and ignoring the focus on the powers and the waifus, it has a thing wherein you will gradually gain some level of power.

So like, what I'm saying is, I'm thinking you're wanting one where you aren't someone who is reincarnated into or FROM a fantasy world, nor someone who has a life or memories that were sealed away, but are you okay with getting tons of power above the average fantasy world resident? Are you okay with having some vague innate connection to this fantasy world like the Zodiac bloodline thing? Are you wanting one where you have no more potential or power than anyone else (so like, you can choose to learn a type of magic or something, but you don't start off with tons of power) or one where you have literally no way of gaining new abilities or powers and are just struggling to survive with whatever you had originally, maybe trying to get some very inconspicuous job or something...

Man I've been itching to make an Isekai type cyoa or light novel, but the worst part of Isekai is writing a sensible reason for an entirely different world to be connected to ours and how someone moved from one to another. I wouldn't really consider the vampire king CYOA to be an Isekai CYOA because you're still very much in your own world, it just has things you didn't know about within it (in this case, Vampires).

Well, I’ve always been more interested in the “communion with the dead” aspect of necromancy than raising undead or achieving immortality. On the upside, I am very long lived (being an elf), and I’m sure the city can provide good employment for me as a magical engineer, alongside my alchemist and smith. As for those pesky Watchers and their hitman, they should give Seboket a nice workout after his long rest. It’s not like I worship the Child in her capacity for destruction anyway. Every kid makes mistakes, and what kind of parents would deny their daughter a second chance?

Anyway, I am originally from Matchtevsto, which is where I served my good master and befriended Melanya. After the former’s death, I became something of a hanger-on to the latter until we both decided that we were fed up with our homeland’s tryhard bullshit. We moved south-west to Deparmiya, where the emir of a relatively fertile mountain valley had begun construction of a new city. Needless to say, I saw the soon-to-be-written writing on the soon-to-be-built wall and hired myself out to the emir, promising to make his domain a magical stronghold. This was lucky, because the location he chose would have made it so that his town would be one of the first to feel the wrath of any future Matchtevsti invasion.

We met Moskheon and Seboket while on a “research expedition” to an ancient pharaonic temple. Why were we on a research expedition to a pharaonic temple? Because Melanya likes fighting and I love... knowledge. In any case, the old worm happened to be hanging out in one of the tombs, and assumed we were up to no good, so he proceeded to make some trouble in our neighborhood. After summoning up several lesser mummies, Moskheon noticed and awakened the great guardian Seboket himself. That fight was so fun, we ended up surrendering and begging the two to join us in the living world.

Fast forward about a decade, and we’re all living in a nice big town house with our living help (they’re all Matchtevsti, and a Matchtevsti would never tolerate being called a “minion”), who mostly work as domestic servants. I am still on commission to magically enhance the city, which is now called Yar Hentha. Common people do not associate what I do with necromancy, and I usually keep the two ancients under an appearance-altering charm to make them look like elves. Seboket in particular has fun justifying his existence as an eight-foot tall elf built like a brick shithouse. He and Melanya spend much of their time training the local soldiery, but what they really relish are adventures, which I must admit are a fine break from the normal grind.

All in all, I think we have a pretty good thing going here. You’ve only got one life, usually, so live it the best you can.

Also, I could use some help on a name. Is just a random Elf-sounding word ok?

Like, instead of travelling for months to some volcanic area to stop some ultimate evil from wiping out the world, you're travelling for like two days to a nearby forest to get some ingredients for some healing elixer that'll allow your friend to heal quickly enough to still make it to that tournament he's been looking forward to.

Like, the effort required and what's at stake determines the severity/comfy levels of an adventure.

Man I love cliche storms though, like Konosuba's fantasy world sounds awesome to me because I'd love to be in such an rpg like world with my friends, even though I doubt I'd be anything more than a low tier scrub who barely makes it day to day.

I like Re: Zero in that the world and lore and such seems to be pretty interesting. It relies a lot at the moment on keeping things a mystery, so the exact reasons of how and why people are coming into this world and how things are the way they are isn't really explained, but it feels different enough to give me the feeling that there's a good puzzle I'll enjoy solving while going through the story, although I don't really think there's any way to really accept an Isekai story without a lot of suspension of disbelief.

I mean, before going anywhere or explaining anything, you have to have accepted that there's an entire world of magic and monsters that people in our world can somehow wander into without anyone from either world really figuring that out.

I guess the differences between a chore and an adventure is the frequency of it. If you're going off to destroy world ending evils on a monthly basis then it isn't really anything special, even if it is still something of an adventure.

Meanwhile, that innkeeper whose childhood friend aspires to be a knight but injured himself during a training incident a week before the tournament to find impressive warriors, is leaving to go some place they've probably never actually been to before and probably won't bother going to again. They're quite comfortable just running an inn in their hometown, but they really want to help out their friend, so they go someplace new and fight monsters that are probably only marginally stronger than what the standard guardsman in training would ever have to face, to get something they may or may not have seen in some stores before but certainly never actually thought about enough to pick it out in a crowd until today.

In other words, it is the break in the routine, the newness of the experience that separated an adventure from a chore. To the experienced traveller this boar is probably nothing they don't fight half a dozen of every day when travelling from town to town, but to the innkeeper, it'll probably be one of the most intense fights he'll ever have with a random beast outside of town.

It's really all just subjective to the person. Although I suppose most people wouldn't care for a CYOA that made them feel so small in comparison to the rest of the world. With all of the great stories in video games and the like today, some minor fantasy adventure probably just feels like a boring starter quest in a mmo.
