Did some more Spellburst Savant homebrew. Broom Jockey is a mobility/flight/speed based spellburst savant with a melee theme.

This is the alpha so feedback is highly appreciated. Among other things, I'm a little iffy if it's got enough melee boost to be functional in combat as most of it's stuff is about mobility and it lost some nova spell getting there. Still, Flyby Attack works nicely with Wave Motion Strike (As it allows a standard action, NOT just an attack)

Sorry about there being a few postings but I'm trying to get feedback to help it get out of alpha.

I don't suppose anyone could help me understand something from the Spheres of Might preview document? Specifically with the Striker class's Combo Rhythm ability.

I understand how it works, sort of, in that if you hit someone with an attack, your next attack gets a +1 to hit and damage, and if that hits the next one gets a +2, and so on, until the start of your next turn. I'm a little confused about its use, though-- it comes online very early, and I'm wondering how someone is supposed to make enough attacks (let alone land enough hits) to take advantage of that scaling bonus at low-to-mid levels, since I thought most everything in Spheres of Might uses the Attack action, which usually means only one punch per turn.

Is there a method of throwing a big flurry of punches I'm not seeing?

Different anon, but while I kinda doubt my first GM would go for it, on account of the BotB ART that's "functionally identical", he would probably be down for jiggling the fluff and such to be less shit if I asked.

I kind of want to play a bomb-focused Kitsune Homunculist Alchemist now, with a bit of "mother may I" to make some of it work. Sure do hate myself for thinking about it, though.

Bring down the price of everything to match magical equivalents.

Allow tech guns to work like regular guns so you can at least Deadly Aim with them.

Make it so you can craft technological shit with equivalent magical craft feats

Not require (multiple!) massive artefacts to craft tech shit

Remove the Timeworn feature

Make it so techo-equipment shit can do their things X times/day rather than drain cell charges, with perhaps the noted exception of weapons.

Make it so a charge of a melee weapon lasts for a day rather than 1 hour and balance around that.

A lot more that I haven't even begun touching yet.
>>
>>52138368

Haven't played it, though I hear it's quite good, so long as you're not ideologically opposed to sci-fi in your fantasy.
>>
Is it me or does Spheres of Might really lose steam at higher levels where things like Bleed, Trip, etc all become worthless? Maybe that's me being a dumbass but it seems like half the talents basically become nulled the moment you stop fighting grounded humanoids.
>>
>>52138454
Long story short, Legacy of Fire GM had his own lore that re-wrote Katapesh, but said some offhand comment about "yeah, feel free to edit the setting a little if you prefer the old Katapesh".

2hu used his exact wording to justify re-writing a huge swath of that lore and adding loli catgirls.

I would just let Technologist let you craft Tech items whole sale instead of fusing it with magic item feats.

Also, I think the melee charge for an hour thing is fine now that charges aren't as big a commodity presumably, though that really depends on how strict your group is on managing in game time in a dungeon.

Are you really going to insist that 2hu doesn't use autistic logging of every wording that lets him get his way to insert dangerously young characters with obscene power into anything?

We get it, he ERPs with you. He's done it for years, and you're his eternal defense force.

Filipinos GET OUT.
>>
>>52138497
That's the problem with martials in general. Just about everything stops working once you introduce actual monsters, and SoM doesn't do anything to that because they don't redefine any terms or give anyone the ability to use the neat abilities past their normal limitations.

Means that the only really useful spheres in the long run are the damage-dealing ones, which means we might as well use PoW

Honestly, it was the volume (not necessarily the content) that he added that was unwelcome, and I should have phrased my suggestion to add to the setting better; I had meant for such things to not exceed the scope of an individual application.

I would have made a point of telling him to back it down, but shit came up and I had to give up on the campaign. It wasn't anybody's fault that the thing had to be shuttered.

Really, though, I didn't read it too closely, and I've shaved off most of the old LFG forum to make it easier to read, so I can't confirm or deny the scope of any "rewrites".

>>
>>52138653
I don't see why not.
>>
>>52138657
If you can believe it, I actually only found out it was a humanized pony image after I created the character, but I decided to go with it anyway because it honestly doesn't bear much resemblance to the source material, and it's hot.

As for her name, I just picked Lyra because it sounds like 'Liar', and Ivytongue for similar reasons. Probably the most generic "this person is not trustworthy" name I could think of. No ponies were involved in the creative design process at any stage.

I'm going to be giving the Pathfinder Society community a chance at a con soon, since I hate the community but have never actually played a game with them and want to get that under my belt.
Does anyone know of any builds that are good enough to have a niche in PS, independent enough to have something to do if the rest of the party's sperg limiters suddenly blow up, not cheap exploits and broad enough to have race/origin variations?
Too many classes and builds seem to require one to tailor the character's background to a single +1, which I don't want to do since I'm interested in seeing how my usual style meshes with a PS group.

Generally you need to do three things to get a smash hit for /pfg/.

1.) Character must fit the tone of the campaign and region
2.) Character has appealing art and an interesting concept - character feels alive
3.) Character must have development cooked into the backstory - ideally, this means at least one potential rival/antagonist and one hang-up in their life that can be resolved through roleplay

You're an expy player so people will have a default "attitude" of disgusted towards your applications.

It is not enough that you write well but you should also either be a little more discreet with your expy-ing by not using the same art as the character that you are trying to copy paste. Also, you kind of lose points for being an edgelord in the wrong way.

You're not doing #1: Match the tone of the campaign. The GM even explicitly said that this was going to be all sex, drugs, rock&roll.

Also you came off as super thirsty and desperate when you asked "TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT ME TO PLAY SO I GET IN" in the rules thread.

I can't find a link to the dragons 2 game, so I can't criticise that character.

This is also helpful. I was trying to match the tone of the Hell's Vengeance AP, rather then Argent's particular take on it.

I didn't mean to come across that way but I'll keep that in mind for the future.

I'm honestly not too concerned about Brejik. He made honourable mention, which SwimmingEagle said those were characters that were on at least three of the teams he had made. It was pure chance that a team my app wasn't in got picked.

>>52138946
I've gotten into every one i've seriously applied for, its not that hard...

1. T shaped characters, are ideal, be really good at your specialization, but have a wide base
2. Don't fear the gimmick. The gimmick is your friend.
3. Make weird builds, everyone wants to see a weird build work
4. Backstory isn't as important as everyone thinks, it just needs to be serviceable, characterization and personality are what count.
5. Make sure you're tonally consistent with the campaign, this is the most important thing.

I think those are all the keys.

1. You're in competition with everyone else anyways, so don't worry about stepping on toes and just make what you want to make

2. That said is everyone is making spunky punchgirls, maybe think about not making a spunky punchgirl, because i doubt the DM wants an entire party of spunky punchgirls.
>>
>>52139521
Personality blocks are honestly more valuable than backstory IMO, I want to know what your character is like, not what got them to the campaign starting area.

>>
>>52139521

It's not just about doing the personality block: You might also wanna space things out. The layout of your application blurb is PAINFUL to read. The picture on the right crams all your words into an ugly lump of text that doesn't flow or give you any breaks.

Roll20's forum text editor is actually kinda serviceable, so you should use it to make your profile easier to read.

And profile blocks are super important, man. Nobody cares about your background past the important bits: Hell, sometimes background changes partway through because you and the GM realize you can do better by tying things in.

But personality's important: You need to figure out how the group's gonna mesh.

There's actually quite a few abilities that gives you free AOOs as well, and dual wielding is supposed to basically let you TWF as its base bonus, so there's going to be plenty of ways to make sure that you can build up that combo rhythm. We've had some people already working with stuff in my playtest to figure out ways to really score a huge amount of hits, making the talents to bank combo rhythm for another hit or extra tension pretty worthwhile.

The family immediately gives the single most disgusting and depraved performance the owner has ever seen in his life. Stunned, the owner asks for the name of the act. The father replies "the Aristocrats".

In a meta sense, the humor isn't in the punchline, but in the description of the act itself, which should be as detailed and as awful as you can possibly make it.

I can't emphasize enough how important #1 is to making a character that will get accepted, it makes or breaks an application in a huge way.

Don't believe me? A recent example of this in a current advertising game was Aurelian Mopatis for Dragons 2, an otherwise excellent application that did not fit the tone or the campaign at *all*, and for that wasn't even an honorable mention when applications closed.

If you make a character that's on the same wavelength as the campaign, you're not even going to be up in the air for being chosen, it's going to be an "of course you're in, you fit."
>>

Same here.

And I was one of the people that was completely overlooked repeatedly in favor of more 'exciting' profiles.

All I needed was two things: Fitting the theme, and choosing a character role that was somewhat unpopular: the skillmonkey, when everyone else was making high-damage battlefield control initiators and god wizards of varying kinds.

You can do it, just remember:

Theme.
Role.
Authenticity.
Personality.
And art. You need good art, unfortunately, it's just how it goes.

Also, make sure you at least talk to the GM at least once if possible, and make a good impression.

It doesn't invalidate an entire character, if they're fine otherwise then it's whatever, but every strike against a character for any reason is still a strike. There's pretty much no one that wants to play beside a character who's all build, no personality, and taking traits strictly for mechanical reasons without at the very least giving them a nod is implicit that this is the case.

If someone has a great character and an unjustified reactionary trait, I'll still look at them. But if there's a similar character without the trait, they'll get more consideration, and likewise if there's a similar character with the trait that did bother building their flavor with it.

Not everything goes to extremes, it's simply that you're safer off betting against reactionary.

By giving it for free. The more of the "mandatory" traits you give to your PC's the more they're likely to actually pick roleplay oriented ones.

Since I was just poking at this for Valki...

Open Hand, which Strikers get access to for free, gives you fairly easy access to a free Trip attempt and then a free AoO vs. enemies that get tripped. Both the trip attempt and the AoO trigger and benefit from Combo Rhythm. You can pick up Vicious Stomp fairly easily for another AoO after a successful Trip, and there's the swift action to attack again via Tension.

Unlike a lot of multiattack sequences it's partially sequential where you need to actually connect with each piece to perform the next one, but even when you first pick up Combo Rhythm you can have a fairly lengthy chain available. It feels like it'd be very Fighting Gamey too, which is ideal.

Reactionary isn't a strike against your character. It's not even a half-strike. It's not even a faux pas.

This is like arguing that a popular haircut you don't like is a strike against a person and could get them jailed. But seriously, this sidecut shit needs to die off.

As it so happens, the people who decide whether or not something is a strike in a game is literally everybody but yourself. If your DM doesn't give a fuck about you taking reactionary just to min-max, then whatever, but fact of the matter is, maybe not even most of them, but some DMs do.

If you don't get picked for a game and the reason turns out to be a concern that you're just there to win initiative and make an encounter save or die, then well, you've only got yourself to blame when the warning signs were there.

>>52140055

>>52140105
Because there are some mechanics that don't make sense to refluff and some mechanics that do make sense to refluff.

Saying you have reactionary because you're just jumpy/vigilant/paranoid as opposed to bullied is fine because there are no mechanics to enforce the "you were bullied aspect". There's no reason a +2 to initiative can't just reflect general preparedness. It's the same reason a Fighter could be a guard, a gladiator, or a Ronin.

That's different from saying "my horse is really a juvenile tazlewyrm".

You did a good job with it!

I know the next playtest isn't coming out until the end of the week-ish but are there many Striker or Open Hand changes coming down the pipe? I'm looking at making a character for a different game and wondering if I should hold off or if I'm good to start poking at it.
>>
>>52140105
Because you strawman at the first sign of someone not agreeing with you.
Do you really think someone is going to "refluff everything"? Do you really think the value of good pre-written fluff will vanish because people are allowed to enforce Rule 0, which modern roleplaying is literally built on?
You change the game to the extent that it takes to make it the most comfortable and entertaining to play for you and your group. You don't have to throw yourself down the slippery slope and start obsessively rewriting all feat fluff in all of Pathfinder because there's no Game Police to stop you.
You can do whatever you want with your own game, because the rules are the company's suggestions of how best to play the game. It's like buying a LEGO set with a specific theme - you'll probably be using it like instructed because you're buying it specifically to be able to build it without making schematics from scratch yourself, but Judge Dredd isn't going to turn up the moment you use the bricks to make something new, use some of them in something else or mix a few other bricks of yours in.
A lot of people against Rule Zero, like you, tend to operate on the predetermined conclusion that if other people are allowed to control their own games and not just follow RAW slavishly, they'll eventually crawl through the tubes of the Internet and show up at their gaming table, forcing them at gunpoint to only ever play with their rules.
The rules as published are a common point that everyone can orient themselves around, not the Holy Word. No one is going to come and threaten to kill you if you don't include their homebrew.
>>
>>52140151
You keep taking things to ridiculous extremes, it's been acknowledged in the goddamned post that a character can take these mechanical traits and make it work.

The ideal here is that all your traits are mechanically useful and flavorful. A character doesn't have to suffer mechanically to have good characterization, and they don't have to suffer in characterization to be a competent PC.

The reason Reactionary in particular gets so much flak when there're other +2 initiative traits or shit like Carefully Hidden or even post-nerf Heirloom Weapon abuse is that it's almost always taken with no regards to the roleplaying potential that's there and easy to access, and implies a player is going to be some faggot that'll shut up until combat starts. It doesn't make this a fact, but when you're there doing competitive applications or whatever the fuck, you want to sell yourself, not look like that quiet dick.

They already have espionage skills covered, honestly Guther, a Rogue, and the Lawyer together fucking saturate this area.

Gunther I might switch out for Lyra mechanically.

Dr. Nefarius is battlefield control Falafel is support/buffing. Lyra is debuffing.

Melee is fucking saturated, and apparently Falafel is the only person who has heard of a bow. Lyra has a whip so she is out of the way and Dr. Nefarious seems like he doesn't enter melee combat often.

>>52140982
Yes, definitely. Rory is like, one of the Meme-iest shits to ever be in a /pfg/ game. I can't believe it.
>>
>>52140914
Falafel not being able to party up is a meme, the guy apparently lead soldiers and didn't dick them over because it would endangers him. Why would he dick over the party when it endangers him?

Overall Falafel is more a choice because he's the only support/buffing specialized guy out of the entire lot, and the only fucking person who decided "maybe I should pick up a bow". Mechanically he actually fits into a party.

Right now the party is way too saturated with certain roles.
>>
>>52140902
then pick a class that makes sense for a butler
>>
>>52140979
It's also a lewd game. So chances are anything they can't DPS down they'll just have sex with.

I've done this twice, and both times, the person I wanted to fuck got in while I didn't. How about them apples?
>>
>>52140979
I was certain Gunther would get in based on the DM, but I really dislike how he eats a massive amount of space on a single character with his eidolon without actually covering anything at all that the party doesn't already have handled. That said, 6 man gestalt party so they're probably fine no matter who was chosen.

Gunther was another sure pick but that's okay because he's cool

The fact is there was really only 1 slot for HV
>>
>>52141082
The guy who posted him literally said he was a shitpost over the IRC.
>>
>>52141022
Really, I don't see why people have to rely on skill rolls for role play when they can easily make do with well written and flavorful descriptions on what their characters do and how they do it. There comes a point where the dice should not matter at all when all you're trying to build on is the narrative.

This is also the reason why I slightly disapprove of relying on jacking diplomacy sky high to compensate for terrible role playing.
>>
>>52141018
Everyone keeps treating Falafel like the only backliner, but Keldor and Zeno are both full backline support characters and they opened up that way. Falafel opened up as a primary melee debuffer if I recall. Did everyone just ignore the fuckbois?

Summoners have the excellent battlefield control and are pretty much second only to the wizard when it comes to their spell list.
>>
>>52141116
So what you're saying is, if I write and describe really, really well how my wizard stabs an orc in the neck and slits its throat with a rock he happened to have found on the side of the road six sessions ago, I shouldn't need to roll attack or damage?

What does Gunther have that other PCs don't? Mikhael and Arminius were straight up better picks if its just about being a manly man.

At least they have 1 or 2 casters between them, otherwise they'd be fucked the first time they hit high levels.
>>

There's casters in the party too

they're fine.
>>
>>52141173
There was an 100% chance that a daddy of some sort was getting in, Gunther was the most daddy among them, having manly character art and carrying around a child. He's also got a very unique concept compared to those two who were pretty plain in a pool with a lot of weird characters.

I don't like him but I was certain he was getting in the moment I saw his art. He opens up butler fetish stuff and /ss/ on one character too.
>>
>>52140979
>Mechanically the current team can not fit together to save their lives. They're all Melee/Stealth/Face.

See and this is really only a problem because of the nature of the game, being a Paizo AP
>>
>>52141192
Gestalt makes party composition matter more so you actually pick folks with a diverse skill set. Basically every person chosen has face, espionage, or both. And somehow they're still missing some knowledge skills, though Lyra has bardic knowledge for a +2 cheeky knowledge check
>>

Another meme that needs to die.

>>52141116

He could have gone with Summoner still and gestalted with a high skill class. Hell, there are cavalier archetypes he could have gone with that fit. Gunther's current build makes it seem like he made the build first and wrote the character after but forgot to write in any excuse for why he's a Warlord/Summoner working as a butler. The only thing he has in skills that fit the theme is Profession (Butler).

Whether we like it or not this is daddy/g/. Whether for fetish reasons or just as aversion to anime pretty boys, a character wants to look maybe overtly masculine to appeal around here.

Or on the alternatively, very very feminine. Anything inbetween is workable, but has an uphill battle.

Yes and?
>>
>>52141267
Battle butlers are one of the most common tropes out there, the build makes sense if you're trying to build a character that doesn't need to carry a weapon or walk around in armor.
>>
>>52141279
It's somewhere between Lich and Demigod.
>>
>mind-controlled tentacle parasite ojou gets honourable mention in HV despite getting no mention in the threads

>>
>>52141332
It's a common trope but the tropiness makes more sense with skill-based classes like rogues, bards, stalkers, investigators, the list goes on.

If he wanted to use fists and Mithral Current he could have gone with Bushi Stalker and that would have made so much more sense with the theme.

I doubt HV GM has a hard on for DILFs, the butler player asked if he could be allowed to play an old character and it was swiftly turned down.
>>
>>52141446
But they still picked the DILF.

>Throwing soap in the dragon's mouth before it can breath fire making it choke and shit
>Take a magic class get craft alchemy and run wild with it like dispel magic soap or magic oils but soap so if I clean my sword with it it gets like versatile weapon or something
>>
Does anyone not question this "application process"? Like you spend weeks advertising pick what apps you like but then the players don't like one another or the GM or something. Just about every /pfg/ game falls apart or never gets off the ground.

How do we fix this?
>>
Ouch, Lauren got thoroughly roasted. I guess people really hated her as a character.

And I thought it would be interesting to bring a slightly more normal person (as normal as a killer can be, at least) when so many of the others are complete, inhuman monsters.
>>
>>52141929
Certainly not by listing triggers and how long you've played pathfinder for in your app, I can at least say that much.
>>
>>52142142
Everyone hates all the PCs that were accepted to HV so try not to take it personally.
>>
>>52142579
What's the recipe for this salt? WotR and Dragon 2 passed by so uneventfully for having 40 apps.
>>
>>52142606
My guess is they wanted to be the only male in an all female party.
>>
What is generally considered a fair ammount of time to leave the app process open?
>>
>>52142783
So far as short as a week and as long as a month and a half have been successful.
