Pathfinder General /pfg/

/pfg/ Gods and goddesses Edition:

What are the /pfg/ deities that should be added to the official golorian pantheon?

Amalthea seems like a popular choice.

Of course it's a simple goddamn story, and if it's any bit complex than that's where editing comes in.

Lord of the Rings was able to tell a vast epic in 9 hours while the director of Batman v Superman bitches he couldn't tell a "man beats up other man" story in 5 hours.

As much as I hate his other policies, GRRM understands how valuable valuable metals were in the olden days. A suit of full plate armor costs 100 gold dragons, and a gold coin could feed you for a year.

>>
>>52141853
Gold generally is not a fiat currency, since as a precious metal, it has value unto itself. "Fiat currency" is something that only has value because the state says so, independent of any actual worth. USD is a fiat currency because a dollar bill is just a dollar bill - the only reason it has any value is because US government has decreed that it does. This in contrast to non-fiat currencies, like dollar used to be - that is, the dollar was worth money because the US treasure guaranteed that it would pay a certain amount of silver for one dollar.

I'm still surprised the 3 paragraph mental diarrhea I shat out for an app in dragons 2 got the praise it did from reviewanon. I probably should have spent some time reworking a paragraph so it expanded more on personality and thought process like the guy said, but... Well... It was fun to write and makes me want to revisit it at some point.

You forget that magic actually exists
>>
>>52141935
>backstory is irrelevant
Go fuck yourself. If someone's backstory never comes up its the hallmark of an, at best, mediocre GM.

Backstory should convey and explain personality and tell you WHY THE FUCK THE CHARACTER IS GOING ON THE ADVENTURE. Without a backstory how the fuck do you explain why the character is there, how he got there, and why he is going on their adventure?

Remember, anon.

Whenever you brought up DHB or 2hu's name in something completely unrelated, you were complicit in what /pfg/ has become today.

Whenever you posted about how much you wanted a game that pandered to your fetishes, you were complicit in what /pfg/ has become today.

Whenever you spent time writing about how you wanted two characters in a game you weren't even in to fuck each other, you were complicit in what /pfg/'s become today.

Whenever you 'ironically' posted about how you wanted to marry a kitsune shota, you were complicit in what /pfg/'s become today.

Whenever you decided that /pfg/ was the best place to talk about your shitty game, you were complicit in what /pfg/'s become today.

Look around you, buddy. This is your fault.
>>
>>52141967

Honestly, I will admit most of it was shitty filler I could have better conveyed interpersonally with the DM better.

I felt I needed to have more preface on why the character was coming to whatever setting whatever campaign I was applying to took place in. Only the synopsis and the final paragraph of the backstory really mattered, the rest was just me being anxious about not having enough pre-campaign story to have potential RP hooks and sidestories later. But not all DMs are into adding in content playing off their PCs' backstories. That's fine too.

PvP has a way different optimization point if you don't have prep time. 9th level casters die really easily to PvP specialized builds. 9th level casters without several rounds to buff themselves are extremely vulnerable to specialized PvP builds.

Particularly Wizards and Sorcerers.

/pfg/ is fine, the shitposting isn't at any level near where it's disruptive most of the time. Fact is that most Pathfinder players have enough of a cursory understanding of Pathfinder that we don't need to sit around and argue over rulings or tiers all day. We'll talk about Monster Hunter's Handbook when it comes out, we'll probably discuss some Ironfang Invasion in spoilers, and then it's back to waiting for the next release with whatever inbetween. I'd like to have less memes but whatever, talk about what makes a good group composition or character background is perfectly fine as I see it.

Mechanically, you pick one god and determine your benefits from it.

In character, there's no reason someone can't worship multiple gods. The Pathfinder pantheon for the most part isn't very competitive.
>>
>>52142646
In any pantheon, it's actually how that works, generally the only exception being particularly zealous clerics (and/or paladins for fiction).

Basically, That's the entire fucking POINT of a pantheon. The god of fishing is the one you give offerings to when you go fish if you want a good haul. If you want to up your chances of wooing that maiden, you ask the god of love. Those who want to come home from the next war are praying to the goddess of war. And when wronged the god of justice is there for you.

>>52142646
In Pathfinder terms? You can worship a whole pantheon. You can even do so as a cleric, though unless otherwise noted, you mechanically only devote yourself to one god's cult based on personal needs or philosophy.

However, most people take a specific god as their patron, because that's the god they need the most. Farmers and Erastil, gamblers and Calistria, merchants and Abadar, etc. Even if they have to make offerings to other gods, they just get a worshipper of that god to be their intermediary rather than join the other cult.

Alright, alight, bright and right. How are you folks doing today? I myself am doing perfectly fine, and I hope you are too.

Today's topic for Blood Mountain game- magical traditions. I need some second opinions on the following ideas for magical traditions

First up, Chemical Magic and Recitation, the two types of magic most commonly used by colonists in the not!Colonies.

>Chemical Magic, somewhat like Mistborn where chemicals must be ingested and expelled from a chemical conduit held in one hand in order to use magic
Drawbacks: Somatic (once), Focus Magic, Center of Power, Draining Magic and Prepared Casting
Boons: Fortified Casting

>Recitation, wherein you must recite complicated strings of magic words in order to use magic, and must have a creature bound to you in order to actually KNOW those words
Drawbacks: Focus Casting, Extended Casting, Verbal Casting, Magical Signs, Skilled Casting (Perform: Oratory), Rigorous Concentration
Boons: Draw Magic, Bound Creature, Easy Focus

Finally, Shamanistic Magic which is used by the natives of the land, which is already represented by the Mysticism tradition. Though I'm tempted to add in the Skilled Casting (Diplomacy) to represent bargaining with the spirits in order to actually work with you. Any thoughts on these? I'm just ironing out ideas for magic so that when I get to how they interact with the setting I have a solid basis for just HOW they work and what their limits are.

Hmm... Honestly, this is kind of a weird one. Numeria lends itself to techno-barbarians more than bullshit high fantasy Ye Olde Europe tropes that are especially common in Path of War, so I would suggest saying that 3pp is open ONLY IF the player can adequately explain just what the fuck their abilities come from.

An Avowed who can launch magic out of his fingertips due to the nanites coursing through his veins will be received a lot better than the Avowed that has some bullshit connection to a Nymph that never shows up in the story.

As for tone? I suggest going full pulp with this one. Iron Gods is a very, very silly campaign when viewed in the right light, all it takes is finding that light.

Iron Gods is one of the better adventure paths actually.

However, it was basically written by a bunch of people who think the ENEMIES you fight should have star-trek levels of techno-bullshit going for them, but that the PLAYERS should not be allowed to even pick a piece of it up without completely and utterly raping their character build up the ass with a sideways cactus covered in pure capsaicin, so even for a numerian android the rewards tend to be "timeworn" (aka "it has handful of charges left, cannot be recharged and will probably explode in your hand") and level-balanced around the wealth-by-level using prices that basically doubled every aspect of the item.

Basically, they go "no no. a laser pistol, with its 1d8 fire damage, costs 10 000 GP, AND uses 500gp batteries, one per ten shots. So that's a high level item reward and they should feel glad"

One common one we see often on here is the "tech warsoul", where someone uses discipline weapon shapes, or a symbiot slayer, or a spheres armorist, possibly fluffed as nanotech or as the obliterator virus to reproduce tech guns without the problem of it costing more for a laser pistol than for a +2 adaptive magic bow and a thousand fucking arrows.

I haven't played IG, but one of my good friends has. According to her, it's the most complicated and mechanically intensive AP ('cept Wrath), but also the most interesting and rewarding. If you're not a master PF GM at the start of the campaign, you will be by the end, provided you're willing to put in the effort.

>Clue me in on app processes, what do you fags want? 3pp? I've got Legendary/Jolly + a few others. PoW, SoP..probly not.

Legendary + Jolly is an excellent basis for a game. I personally love me some PoW, but I can see why you wouldn't want to include it. I'd suggest allowing class templates (for 6th level Initiating) and the Martial Training feats, to allow people to get *some* maneuvers, without opening the floodgates.

>>52144841
That's definately a good idea. It wasn't the party's lack of mechanical skill that was the problem when I ran it. It's that they needed me to railroad them so hard to get them to go to any objective until we were level 7 and they had a clear objective that... Went off the rails of the campaign anyways.
>>
>>52144758
Nah, all of that stuff is thousands of years old and the people maintaining it do so by rote and don't really understand the technology they're looking at. Shinto-esque priests maintain solar power (Suncatchers) structures in their shrines to keep what little tech there is charged and maintained. Tractors exist in some places (typically regions where there WAS farming before the world broke), but not in other places; largely maintained by the priests who run the Suncatchers, though in a Breadbasket Shard most anyone who farms would be a lay minister (both for knowledge of maintenance, and to use the relics).

I'm not gonna say no one makes tech anymore, because their are places that do (those are really rare, though), or that no one understands tech... but the ones who do often actively suppress knowledge of the more dangerous bits.

Probably gonna use Suncaster for laser rather than nuke, now that I think on it.

Or am I effectively rolling up a dangerous heretic?
>>
>>52145129
An anon a few threads ago made the complaint about the Betrothed meaning you have to spend twice as much resources to be as good as a single character in battle.

While I don't think that's true for feats, since the archetype effectively doubles your feat slots for free, something else did come to mind: magic items.

Say both you and your companion are using Aether Channel, and want a Shocking weapon.
Buying one shocking weapon will do half of 1d6 : you need to spend double to buy two to get the effective damage boost of what a non betrothed would get.

The companion does get free Big 6 progression but the halve ALL bonus damage plays weirdly with other magic items.

Harder to quantify are also the magic items that don't deal damage, but instead set up specific opportunities to deal extra damage - that's also something that's technically halved in effectiveness with this system.

There is no real "Church" - faith is fairly decentralized, again, being more akin to Shinto than Catholicism.

The Iron Tower is pretty much the only place that has the beginnings of an understanding of how the technology works, and even they are basically Renaissance era intellectuals trying to figure out the workings of a smartphone. They understand some of the principles (how Electrum relates to Lightning, for example), but not all. They'd be monolithic in their opposition to the spread of dangerous relics as well as those they don't understand, but happily work to enable the spread of helpful bits of technology. The biggest barrier for them is interchangeability, which while they understand the importance of, their own crafting base lacks the logistics and material knowledge to really work those out.

Most bits of tech produced these days are custom jobs, which can be repaired and maintained... but getting the parts right is a bitch and a half. Same with old tech - most of the maintenance on them is done with custom parts that can't really be replicated, outside of getting the general principles right.
