I'm thinking with two friends about jumping into 40k. I know that start collecting boxes are good for beginners but are they balanced? We want to pick Tau, Tyranids and Space Wolves.
Also what next? Are armoured assault boxes a decent second step?

He's fun to use in a Holy Requisitioner because Deep Striking him is sweet. Also funny in a Cohort Cybernetica, though losing IWND hurts.

Most competitive use is definitely squeezing him into a Skitarii CAD (which he enables) to add to a War Convocation, to give access to his utterly busted Canticles and some of his pretty sweet relics, like giving your Dominus a 3++ save or any character with a unit Skyfire, Monster Hunter, Tank Hunter or Cognis every turn.

That formation needs 670 points minimum. That's still almost 1200 points left for other stuff, 850 if you also count Guilliman. It's possible to run a full Demi-Company in that point limit, so a CAD is well possible, even with Transports added.

Then again, adding Transports to those units is pointless anyway, since they're meant to follow Guilliman, who can only footslog, and only get their Formation effect when standing next to him.

What is considered the absolutely most broken way you can run Tau?

I refuse to play Eldar, I currently play foot-slogging blobs of Black Templars, and there's an Eldar player in my local meta who stomps everyone. I'm willing to play the lesser evil if it means dethroning the prancing little fuck.

I know Riptide Wing with heavy burst cannons are an auto include. But how do I shift into maximum overdrive on the horse shit I always hear about? Games in league are 1850 and use ATC/ITC rulings.

Are CSMs working like Slaves to Darkness in AoS? StD work in AoS as Swiss Army knife that can be used with all other chaos units and factions. Can I just buy a box or two of them, slap a Nurgle keyword or whatever is it called in 40k and paint them green? Or maybe there is nothing like "devotion" for CSM? Sorta but not really. There's not really keywords in 40k. Closest thing to AoS keywords are Factions and USRs. Universal Special Rules.

So for example, a Chaos Space Marine force can ally with Chaos Daemons, Renegade Knights, and Khorne Daemonkin as Battle Brothers. This means that for all intents and purposes, they count as the same army when it comes to beneficial bonuses as well. There are no penalties for fielding them together.

Chaos Space marines are split into 9 Traitor Legions. There are two undivided legions, and two anti-chaos legions, and the rest are all dedicated to a god. Each have their own color scheme, special rules, and lore. My personal favorite are the XVII legion, the Word Bearers, for they were the first to turn to Chaos, and the only legion to fervently worship each god equally.

yes, they are just 2 wound marines ultimately and are susceptible to ID seeing as there is plenty of s8 floating around, but theyre very cheap for their damage output, and a single crisis suit (22pts) and two burst cannons which can both be fired (5 pts each i think) means you have, for 32 points, a multiwound marine that can throw 10 bs3(or more with markerlights) s5ap5 shots. for a similar price, you can get two flamers, in my opinion its not worth getting a twin linked flamer as the units youll be targeting generally are wound on a 2+ anyway, so a squad of guardsmen can pretty much be instantly wiped by s4ap5 flamer templates (two of them) that ignore cover and their armor save, and itll cost you less than 40 points, and can have target lock and be part of a squad of other suits and be designated to take out infantry thatll otherwise get them stuck in melee and prevent the other suits from using their plasma rifles or fusion blasters to deal with other targets.

so yes theyre multiwound marines, but you can have specialist weapons without taking a minimum threshhold of fairly underwhelming units per special weapon, like having x marines per melta.
