Well, I'm glad of the variance at least, trips. I would have preferred some two-handed axe users, but in the end that's just a petty complaint. Now Bretonnia has some infantry units that might be able to hold in a fight, and that's good - and they don't look half bad, all things considered. Could be themed as dismounted Questing Knights.

I'll be excited for those elite archer units. Here's hoping Bretonnia gets well-rounded.

But now the Brets have trebuchet that throws magic projectiles among other stuff.
>>
>>51787025
Anybody know where I can get some Square based for Chaos Warriors? I've got some AoS models that I'd like to rebase, so I can play both games. So far I have 10 already on Squares, and a Exalted Hero on a Square base, along with two Sorcerers. What I need to rebase is 10 more warriors, 5 knights, a Chariot, a Daemon Prince converted from left over bits and a WM warjack, and hopefully I'll have a good start.
>>
>>51789987
I'm not fully happy with everything - I wish there was more room for Bretonnian infighting, I feel that's something that's been missing from the fluff in a lot of ways - but all in all, it seems like good choices are being made.
>>
>>51789555
Probably archers with fire. Maybe stakes. And then the one that costs unreasonable high that is a combination of both.
>>
>>51789555

So, are you folks going to convert the new units that the Brets are going to get to the tabletop?

I'd like to use two of these as Sorcerers of Tzeentch and a Varanguard model as a Lord on Daemonic mount.
>>
>>51790085

Some Hippo-gryph Knights would be cool but who plays Brets for the peasants? These new variations are needed to balance them in the vidya, I like them but I don't care enough for build any/buy historicals for them.

>I wish there was more room for Bretonnian infighting

In the WFRP supplement on Bretonnia, it's often suggested that nobles back-stab in an effort to gain more land and power. Sometimes one noble will induce the peasant to rebel in a competing noble's province, for example.

Yeah, some of the proposed features seemed like they were just doing it because they could. And they spent time on those superfluous things instead of developing the core game. Things like permanent injuries, seasonal weather conditions, seasonal animal populations, enemy armies laying sieges, etc. etc.

Man, just make a functioning game before you worry about all that shit.

I almost feel like writing up a properly warhammery cathay supplement. None of this 'historical china + mythological units' shit. Proper weirdness.
Fat eunuch vampires, opium, celestial wizards with big wonky brass telescopes and strips of parchment nailed to people's foreheads.

Less Romance of the Three Kingdoms and more Big Trouble in Little China.
>>
>>51796689

I always though of Nippon and Cathay as like the Empire, where 80% of its army is somewhat historical.
>>
>>51796799
Yeah. I've always found fan lists a bit dry though.
I suppose it's because the background is practically nonexistent (beyond 'historical china') and the art is just generic.

What they need is something specific - places, dates, culture, political structure, magic tradition and the like - and an artist to give it some life.
>>
>>51797042

Yeah they have a lot of potential and in an RPG setting the limits the sky.

I was thinking of picking up some of Warlords feudal Japan range for small skirmish games set in Warhammer, since the Empire and the East would hardly ever meet it's a good setting for smaller games.

Plus I don't want to paint like 100 spearmen and then have somebody say they won't play me because it's not an official army book.

I think there's a lot of things that you can take from historical China for an interesting setting, partially because there's so much shit that people just don't know about. Most of it will feel unique and exotic.

All you have to do is sprinkle some fantastical shit on top, and it'd be good. Like maybe having them make a deal with a dragon, who gave them enough of his vast knowledge in order to make sure their Emperor was always strong (thanks to magical training and artifacts, anyone who takes the throne is a strong spellcaster), and there's an exam system in place available to just about everyone with any magical aptitude, to help them learn to master one of the winds of magic, in essence giving them something similar to the Empire's College of Magic rather than like Bretonnia or Kislev. Maybe they've had some contact with High Elves, or at least some warring with Dark Elves.
>>
>>51797255
>Was it really too hard to keep miniatures at more-or-less the same scale as the ones you made before?
It's probably intentional.
They did it with LotR to keep the lines separate. I imagine they decided to implement it subtly into AoS to encourage people to buy the new stuff rather than just stick with their old models.

You can get the army books off eBay for about 1/2 their retail price or slightly over if you want a like new one. Alternately in the thread comment you can download them.

Read the rules for moving, shooting and close combat and use these rules to play games with like one box of models until you get a grip of a the rules.

I assume you have other people to play 40k and AoS with - try seeing if you can find people to play WFB with, once you get an army book and an army together.

If there are no other players, see if you can make some - try to get another army (could be more dwarves, but another faction adds variety), and that way you can offer to play trial games with potential players, and later on will have some variety to what armies you can play. The only time I've gotten to play WFB so far was in one of those battles, and it cemented my love for Bretonnians and my desire to play them myself.

If neither of these options work for you, even if you try casting your net further afield from whatever gamestore you play at to other locations, you may have to just settle for vidya.

Shame is that those who have fantasy armies have abandoned them in lieu of AoS and will shit on Fantasy when possible. Those who do play Fantasy are the stereotypical to a fault grognards who will fuck you into the dirt for dare asking to play a game of Fantasy.

I can get the Army Book easily enough as a lot of friends are selling of their stuff. An Army might be harder as I have heard I need about 2000pts to even play a proper game. Being an ausfag, GW is ruinously expensive.
>>
>>51797897
I don't believe anyone would have a problem with you using the rules that they come with.
>>
>>51798254

Well Dwarfs are a cheap army for Warhammer. Your average Dwarf is like the elite of other armies and they come in old boxes of 16 models that are cheapish by GW standards.

I think with Dwarfs you could easily get 2000 points for under £200 brand new. Probably significantly cheaper used.

I'm sad to hear people down under have adopted AoS. It's a mixed bag here but we still have plenty of Fantasy communities.
>>
>>51798308
A box of Warriors and lower tier models are $55, while Ironbreakers, Longbeards ect are $70. Manageable but still an investment.

What would I need to start a Dwarven army in fantasy? And while AoS is being played here I can assure you it was DoA at my store and a lot of Fantasy players have left. It's only recently picked up due to concerted efforts by people in store. Of course I can't speak for anywhere else, just my store.
>>
>>51798371

> 55 Australian simoleons for a troops box.

Hory Sheet.

Are there any websites that give you 20% off like Waylands?

Like I say, Dwarf warriors are probably one of the cheapest money to points investments and you always need troops so a box or two of them will be in every list.

Same with cannons and organ guns, they'll be in nearly every list.

In my opinion Dwarf Lords are too expensive in the game, so either a runesmith or a than on an oathstone would be the way to go for a leader.

That should be near 500 to 600 points.
>>
>>51798433
There might be a few discount places but they are few and far between. There aren't any for Fantasy that I know of.

Is 1000pts for Fantasy a good starting point? I usually do that for 40k. 1000pts then expand with certain units as necessary.
>>
>>51798538

Yeah definitely, 1000 points is a small game but plenty of people will play it and as long as people use common sense, and leave the 300 Skaven slaves at home, it should be a good game.
>>
>>51798575
I'll grab a hold of the army book and have a look. I had empire for AoS but I bought too much too quickly and they're a failed disappointment stored away in the dark.

I do so love the background for Fantasy, such a shame the AoS lore is utter tripe.

>>51796799
Even though much of the empire units are based on reality, and it has a very strong HRE vibe, it's still distinctly the empire. The empire feels fully immersed in the warhammer world, interaction with all the other races and fantastical elements to remind you this is a high magic world.
There's a whole series of fanbooks where the lore is literally just real world history or myths with the names changed. As in there are paragraphs of lore that are just Wikipedia articles with middle school levels of plagiarism editing. Zero immersion in the warhammer world whatsoever, to the point where they only interact with the other human factions. The times they do desire established factions, they ruin them to attempt to fit them into the historical copy pasta. you know it's bad when their estalia book has a Cortez expy wrecking the lizardmen in the exact same way real Cortez beat the aztecs. I'm seriously supposed to believe that the lizardmen were outmatched by mounted knights they've never experienced before, or that they were freightened by gunpowder. I also remember the guy telling me he changed a bunch of cool canon Cathay units because they weren't Chinese enough and it was offensive to Chinese culture

>I remember the guy telling me he changed a bunch of cool canon Cathay units because they weren't Chinese enough and it was offensive to Chinese culture

But arguably the fact that they aren't Chinese enough is what makes them interesting! As much as I love the original creators of Warhammer for actually understanding the cultures they were working with, a one to one copy would be about as interesting as a history textbook - which would be great for me, I love history, but horrible for a fantasy setting and a wargame.

Besides, Cathay is not China, not just not!China. It's interacting with tons of fantastical races, even in what little canon lore it already has - ogres, Beastmen, the Chaos-worshiping Hung. It already has things in its own society which the real China could never have had. And I love the real China and its interesting history, and I can even understanding wanting to include the realities of Spain in Estalia because Spain can be cool, and I have my own problems with offending cultures - because I'm a Midwestern Amerifat, it's Native Americans - but you can't just stick to it like a crutch. You have to be brave enough to put yourself out there and things that people might not agree with, with any writing.

Gonna dump a small amount of Cathayan shit to make up for that rant, I got butthurt bad.

So guys, I'm up for a 3k point battle against High Elves, as Wood Elves

My list is the following:

Glade Lord on elven steed, with great weapon, hail of doom, helm of the hunt and talisman of preservation. 271

Spellweaver (4th), book of ashut and 5+ saving throw (lore of beasts) 320

---

Glade Captain on Great stag, asrai spear, mr 3 talisman and enchanted shield 192

Shadowdancer with sword of striking 115

Spellsinger 2(lore of shadows) with dispel scroll 160

-----

30 Eternal guard with command and banner of discipline 405

15 glade guards with hagbane arrows 225

-----

3 Warhawk Riders 135

5 Treekin with champion 270

10 Wild Riders with full command and +1 M 305
-----

Treeman with strangleroots 245

Treeman with strangleroots 245

5 Waywatchers 100

The Glade lord will go into the Wild Riders, while the Captain will get into the Treekin unit.

Both mages will go into the Glade Guard bunker (which will be deployed into the free wood I tget)

The Shadowdancer will go into the Eternal guard to get rid of rank bonuses and the like.

I more or less know what my opponents usually plays, and I'm expecting at least one frostheart phoenix and at least 2 chariots.

One thing I think would be interesting for Cathay is if it was plagued by cults of Tzeentch. Unlike the barbaric north, where Khorne is the preferred Chaos deity, the courtly intrigue of Cathay lends itself to the manipulation of Tzeentch.

Another way to ensure Cathay is sufficiently Warhammer-like is to include races of the west with an eastern flavor. They already have goblins in the form of hobgoblins, and ogres are native to the east already, but elves, halflings and dwarfs aren't represented as far as I know.

How would you make halflings a more believable part of the setting instead of just a joke? You know, make them as fitting as elves and dwarfs are. I think a start would be to make them less cuddly looking, maybe drawing inspiration from 40k's ratlings. Pic is a somewhat extreme example, but you get the idea.

Perhaps a majority of halflings could live outside the Moot, with only the wealthy few living in their homeland. Halflings could exist in communities throughout the Empire which would put them in frequent contact with other races.

I feel like it would have been mentioned - at least in passing - if there were any groups of dwarfs or elves in existence other than the various factions we know about. A random group of chinese elves appearing out of the blue would be a bit weird.
Halflings would make more sense but it would be hard to get them to fit in. They're very western looking. Would cathayan halflings look cathayan? There's no real reason for it.

On the other hand, we know that the high elves and dark elves are both in contact with Cathay.
Also according to Children of the Horned Rat, the Monkey King was openly trading with the Skaven and even had a Clan Eshin advisor in his court.

>>

They already have the Moot.
So the realm part is covered.

As for the interaction: Maybe making it more of a bread basket of the empire, with the resulting power. Both political and purely financial.

They also border Sylvania, so making them know a thing or two about keeping undead at bay would be fitting, I think.

>How would you make halflings a more believable part of the setting instead of just a joke?
I, in all honesty, wouldn't, but I would start by emphasising characteristics like adaptability and the more inhuman perception of what's wrong and right to do: for the first I'd start off by describing the origins of the race citing a pair of variant subspecies of halflings over the world, from the hairy tree dwellers of the east to the bronze-skinned tribes of lustria with the main focus being the "recently" domesticated halflings of the moot, with the lazy middle class, a talented lower class and the adventurous "nobility", presenting a good ground for a race that could be considered valuable (or at least willing) to be part of social, economical, technological or colonial experiments.
Then I'd go with trying to integrate and enhance an opportunistic and egoistic mindset centered on gluttony and greed with a nod to their common ancestry to the ogres and the tropes developed through the years associated to what I call the shorter folks (hobbits, gnomes, kenders); in short that would translate to a generally rooted disdain for higher concepts like law and moral unless personally enforced in front of them (where the ogres are "might makes right" the halfling would be "the opportunity makes man a thief") and an appetite for all kinds of flesh.

they wouldn't end up with any exclusive niche, but the halflings aren't supposed to have one, they are a middle ground between other archetypes.

Green Knight is connected to chivalry and appears if you are chivalrous. If not, orc and goblin raids increase. Economy is based on peasants so having too many peasants in the army will decrease the economy. Errant Wars are also in.

If I was to implement foot knights, I would have dishonored or banished knights who have to prove their worth to gain back their horses.

Kinda late but I just have to agree with this post. It's a constant thing in my mind when I start thinking of the less known places of the Warhammer world, that people either make them too bland and historical or they go full high fantasy. I loathe the idea of these places being like that insipid Araby fandex where the author just outright put Altair from Assassin's Creed as a unit, but I also fear that going the opposite way could turn Cathay into Mists of Pandaria tier crap.
>>
>>51804982

>>
>>51804200

This or just say their Barony is near one of the many mountainous regions and they're equipped to fight on foot.

Then have a 0-1 take on foot knights for each mounted knight regiment you have.

I have to say, if there was ever an army that deserved a shrine unit it was Bretonnia. Like the fragment of the true cross they should have had a baptism font pulled by two horses and a Fey Enchantress on the back.
>>
>>51804200
I prefer your idea as well, if nothing else because there aren't really supposed to be squires like in the Empire or in historical times. A trainee knight is given a horse and made a Knight-Errant, and has to earn his worth with experience.

What is being a guy in armor with a two handed sword supposed to teach a potential knight, anyway?

>>51805215
I really agree with you here - there needs to be a balance. History on its own is bland, but going too far with wonky stuff just always feels like it's trying too hard.

Take 80% history and spread a generous 20% high fantasy on top - and take into account that this fictional place is going to develop differently than the historical place.

Granted, with Empire it was only with Dragoons, and I can't really find anyone that says that they actually made good use of them, since they're not really ranged cavalry but they kind of make sucky infantry despite their mobility. And you could argue that Warhammer didn't really have rules for dismounting on the table, so why would they be in the game?

But the changing ammunition thing is just a low blow, and feels like something that is supposed to limit Bretonnia's ranged capacity rather than give them more options - especially with that added rule about using peasants hurting the economy. You're being encouraged to take at least two types of archers, if not also taking the normal peasant archers, but at the same time you can't take too many peasant units, so players may end up choosing to take only one. So you get less ranged units as a whole, and less flexibility.

Based chinaman on aliexpress.

Just search for base size and whatever.
>>
Here's a thought: could you see Bretonnia making use of incendiaries heavily? It's distant from a crossbow or a gun, and not technically a missile weapon at all. I wonder if that would be a sufficient dodge for their rigid codes.
>>
>>51805789

I really liked Demipgryphs, I think one unit ruining an entire faction is a bit strong.
>>
>>51805892
Possibly? Rockets were very common in 18th century warfare, but they were laughably inaccurate, and they still required gunpowder. Might still be seen as somewhat cowardly or even too destructive.
>>
>>51805671
They weren't great, but the fact that you could pack up your infantry to have it charge down fleeing units or distract a line so it could be crushed by a hail of bullets had its uses.

And as for the thing, Bretonnia is not SUPPOSED to bring huge armies of peasants outside of its realm. That's not how the country works, and the fact that it doesn't have professional soldiery outside of its noble class is something that they emphasize with this mechanic (Rather than just saying it is so).
Yes it limits flexibility, but so does not having any archers in the undead faction at all, not giving the dwarves cavalry at all, and theoretically so should the Wood elf/Treeman split.

>>51802581
Both of those are already hinted at throughout the lore, it's just never really expanded upon.

>>
>>51805976
>Both of those are already hinted at throughout the lore, it's just never really expanded upon.
Exapnding it would serve the purpose of making them less of a joke.
>>
>>51805976
That's something I hadn't thought of, and will try taking advantage of next time I play Empire. I just tended to use them as slightly more flexible light cavalry, or against Native Americans with their preference for melee troops.

But back to Total War Warhammer - I get the mechanic's uses, but it still feels rather restrictive, and I think it would be clever to have some conscripted bandits to help work around the economic difficulties - if you were willing to trust them and pay the price for them, or something like that. And who says I'd be fighting with peasants outside the realm? Maybe I'm getting invaded by Orcs, so I'm mustering up as many peasants as possible to defend my lands - the effect, as far as it's been worded to me, applies to all armies, not just in other lands. It makes sense that Bretonnia wouldn't bring many peasants on a long campaign, but it shouldn't punish defending your lands with whatever you can get together.

I was neutral when Forgeworld released the first demigryph, then I was merely annoyed and disappointed when GW released them instead of updating the old knights on horse. But then the videogame came and they were front and centre in the publicity for it, and I realized Demigryphs were gonna be the Empire's "thing" from now on and I just had to accept it and move on.

I don't know what to tell you exactly. It's not as if I disliked all monstruous cavalry, but but I just feel like the Empire having these guys as their most potent force after individual heroes makes the Empire lose much of its charm, even with the normal knights technically still being there. I guess I share the same opinion as that one quote from 40k about the Rough Riders, a horse cavalry charge just clicks in a way no other act in war is able to.

I guess there's still Bretonnia, but it was the the full plate post-rennaisance armor cavalry that really catched my eye (not that the crusader still isn't great as well)

Also I know this point is pure opinion, but I think removing the wings of a griffon to make it a land creature completely ruins its aesthetics.
>>
>>51806167
When you temporarily recruit an army to defend your lands, you're taking away the peasants from the field, and you're expected to dismiss the levy after the threat is over to bring home the harvest.

If you fight too long the harvest won't be brought home.
It makes perfect sense for a place without professional soldiery.

The question of whether its a good mechanic from a pure game play perspective is another one, and how it is to be balanced is a good question, because of course no other army gets punished economically for their armies except through the matter of upkeep.
So either they need to be able to recruit a fuckton of peasants relatively quickly (To make up for the fact that they have to constantly dismiss armies), they need to be able to ameliorate the mechanic, or they need to have some other benefit that makes up for it (A huge economic base to cripple, so that you can "save up" for war).
>>
>>51806334
I completed two empire campaigns without ever recruiting demigryphs.

I just used the reiksguard, it just seemed like an obvious choice.
Then everyone told me that their only good unit was the demigryphs and I got confused, because the greatsword/reiksguard hammer and anvil used to break down what was left after I had rained down rockets on the enemies' faces seemed to work just fine.

I think its less about them being evil and more them having more of a moral grey with chaos. As long as tzeentch worship stays within the realms of political manipulation and intrigue, and sorcery, it won't raise the same red flags any of the other gods have. You can have a totally normal and functioning tzeentch society, same can't be said about the other 3.

I always saw cathay as a human nation where they irony was that humans actually had little to do with their own fate, and almost everyone important is actually a vampire/tzeentch cultist/beastman/demigod dragon

The Bretonnians don't honestly seem to have much of a fire theme - they're supposed be all vaguely fae, and with lots of magic focusing on water and growing things.

But I wouldn't mind a kickass bombard or something with carcass shot. Since the shells explode and let fire fall everywhere, so it's a little more honorable than throwing a rock at someone, and I could see the Brets going 'well we put these on our ships, maybe we could take them off our ships and make use of them.' Or you could give it some magic effect so it just causes plants to rapidly grow, trapping the enemy in vines and branches.

Archaon is bland, uninteresting and kinda ruins what's cool about Chaos. So it's not hard to just have some other Chaos lord be more compelling than him.

Chaos is really more interesting as a faction that is always at strife with itself than just something that actually ends up destroying the world. Having an Everchosen in the contemporary time of the setting was a mistake.

Archaon had a cool model, though.

>About them, dread serenity swept through the carnage, bringing the Battle Eternal to a halt never witnessed before. Foes lowered their weapons. Banners drifted to the bloody ground. The din of battle died.

>‘I was one of you,’ Archaon called across the frozen silence, his voice carried on the shearing wind. ‘A puppet in a sick show– like this. Dancing for my dark masters. I dance no more. And neither should you. The gifts of the gods are no such thing. Let us not seek reward. Let us not ask for power. Let us not wait on that which is given. Let us take what is ours. Darkness is ours. Ruin is ours. The world turns beneath our feet for the taking. Real power resides not with gods or any following but with those who take it from them. I am Archaon, doom to my enemies, doom to all the world, doom to the gods invested in that world. Come with me. Why earn the treasures of Chaos when you can steal them? Why kill for Ruinous patrons when you can kill for yourself? Why sell your souls so cheaply, when you can make the worlds of gods and men pay for your miseries?

>‘I might be Chosen of the Dark Gods– but I did not choose them. I will be Everchosen of Chaos, whether the dread Powers and their daemons wish it for me or not. The legions of hell will be ours to command and we shall use them to demonstrate true power. The power to choose. To be or not to. To drag the sick perversity of this daemon-haunted existence kicking and screaming into a time of Ending. To end the world, the gods that torment it and ourselves. That is real power and I ask you to seize it with me. With he who is one of you: lost, damned even, but a slave to darkness no more. With Archaon…’

>The infernal fires of the collapsed gate blazed, like flames upon which gunpowder had been dashed. The balelight of the beyond burned ferociously at Archaon’s god-thwarting words. Archaon couldn’t tell whether the brilliance raged in warning or celebration of his wondrous achievement.

There's one character who turns to Chaos who's still compelling, though, and that's the author of Liber Chaotica. He turns to Chaos not because he wants to punish the weak, destroy the world or because he suffered a personal tragedy.

He recognizes that it's the fundamental substance of the universe and the realization is so horrifying that it breaks his mind. I think somebody like that could have been an interesting Everchosen.

>‘Archaon!’ a voice boomed across the killing fields. A skull-axe thrust up at the sky, above the heads of countless warriors. It was Ograx the Great, the half-breed prince who was beast no more. The former bestial champion of the Blood God, whose army of manfiends had smashed through the havoc of the Battle Eternal, collecting before its example an ever growing vanguard of Chaos warriors. He knew precious few words in his master’s tongue but he knew the glory of his name. With his chest heaving, Ograx roared the warlord’s name to the storm-crashing heavens.

>‘Archaon, Archaon… Archaon!’ the daemonbreed chanted.

>‘Archaon!’
>‘Archaon!’
>‘Archaon!’

>Once more the battlefield rang with the thunder of his name, uttered like a dark oath from thousands of doom-lifted hearts. Warriors of Chaos, fighting for every Ruinous Power and daemonic master, united as one dark, apocalyptic force behind the dread syllables of his name.

>‘ARCHAON!’
>‘ARCHAON!’

>The warlord turned his daemon steed about to soak up the power and possibility of his intoxicating achievement. The ground trembled. The fires of hell roared forth from the gate of oblivion. Thunder tore through the sky and lightning shattered the gloom.

>‘ARCHAON!’

>He held up his battle axe, the steel blade of the Ruinous Star rising. He lifted it above the chanting thousands. The dark star of a Chaos undivided. United. As one. The chanting echoed to nothing on the chill air.

>‘Let us be the storm that rolls south!’ Archaon bellowed back at them, levelling his battle axe towards a world awaiting its end. It was all the monstrous horde needed to hear.

Short answer is yes, they like Archaon because he is one of the guys. He understands their struggle that is the Path to Glory. He isn't a demigod far removed from them.

I still can't get over that, while Bretonnia had the opportunity to take mercenaries opened up to them in ET, they never had any mercenaries themselves. And there's plenty of room for them!

Imagine a company of Knights of the Realm who were disgraced and now fight in other lands to regain their honor, or developed a taste for adventure beyond the borders of Bretonnia and got the king's permission to fight for foreign armies to protect Bretonnia abroad. Or some Knights-Errant that signed up with some Empire regiment to earn their spurs.

You could even just have peasant archers or men-at-arms that deserted or got sick of living under strict lords and tried to make a life for themselves elsewhere as mercenaries. A joke regiment, at least.

I've thought about this as well. What I came up with was the idea that the Moot is a province inhabited primarily by wealthy land-owning halflings and farmers who can pay the exorbitant rents. The vast majority of halflings live in downtrodden communities spread throughout the Empire and other human nations. Because only the worst professions are open to them many turn to crime and others become mercenaries, like in your scenario.

You'd then need a reason for people to buy the models. People use Ogres for unit filler. Halflings probably aren't too suited for that, but if they were made and advertised in such a way that instead of buying a new box of ten more of something for $50 because you needed an odd number in your unit you could just buy an $8 Halfling mini...just make them in a few styles.

Let the colors used differentiate a Savage Halfling fighting for Night Goblins from one fighting for Ogres or Beastmen.

Fuck, I'd be tempted if Halflings for some reason built a settlement in the Warp and the Chaos Gods were like "Alright then, dibs on that one for a standard bearer!"

Well yeah. They were always more suited to the RPG setting.

A Halfling isn't going to do shit against a Dark Elf on a dragon is he?

Hence why they never had an army book and only a regiment. Nothing stopping someone from having an army since the Moot has a levy but they won't be taking on the world.

I already own the good remake, why would I buy the bad one?
>>
>>51809851
Honestly, I wouldn't put it out of possibility. With shit like BFG, blood bowl and Epic coming back, it seems like a easy enough fux. All they'd need to do is have FW write a supplement where the Incarnates plan works, or some how Archaeon dies. I imagine a good point of divergence would be this:
>Horned Rat does not ally with Chaos, and instead, works against them, severly crippling Chaos' advance into the old world.
>Settera is able to defeat Nagash, with Mannfred betraying him.
>Tyrion uses widowmaker to kill Malekith, at the cost Alarielle dying. Some dark-elves flock to him, like Morathi, stick with him, while the High-Elves and Wood elves dispute his claim. Teclis now must live in exile, as his furious brother hunts him down.
>Grimgor goes on to fight Archaeon instead of Cathay.

All it would take is one book, and a little bit of support.

I think there was a rule when Dogs of War were a thing that forbade the Brets from taking any of them.

The difference I'd propose is to make their presence greater in human nations as a whole, not just neighboring Averland and Stirland. Halfling districts would exist in most major cities for example.

In the actual canon, Bretonnians don't have squires. There used to be a unit called Squires, but those were specialized peasant archers.

Canonically, the moment that a Bretonnian male reaches manhood, he's going to be put on a horse, given some armor and a lance, and told that he's gotta prove himself - either through battle or some other great deed. That's where the Knights-Errant come from.

For FW to do a good job of Fantasy we would actually have to buy the models from them to make it worth it.

The one big book they did was good. Really fleshed out Nuln more.

To be honest it's the rules. The stuff they made for Fantasy was always rubbish rules wise.

>>
>>51810476
GW as a whole would just be better if it was run like forgeworld.

I'd say the prices are the downside but given GW's current prices, forgeworld starts to look reasonable by comparison.

>In the actual canon, Bretonnians don't have squires.
I could have sworn they had traditional squires but they were peasants. Wasn't there a few of them in the Bretonnian novels?
>>
>>51813193
There might have been - I don't remember reading those novels, so I don't know - but they definitely do not have squires in the traditional sense of trainee knights, though I could understand why they might have peasant helpers to help with armor or to take care of the horses. Questing knights seem to have such a peasant helper in the stories.

What killed me is how much of a fucking joke the 8e prices were.

Flamespyre Phoenix? Okay, $60 big monster centerpiece.
Lothern Skycutter? A $60 chariot? Fuck that.
Sisters of Avelorn/Shadow Warriors? $60 for ten fucking models who are monopose? FUCK THAT.

I got all that shit on eBay months later, half assembled, no more than $40 each. I bought the 8e rulebook, IoB, Heraldry, Alarielle and the Handmaiden but I drew the line at the rest.
>>

>>
>>51812149

Pricing on some kits was obscene (Witch Elves) and on some others it was pretty good (most troops and heroes). Things is, they were generally better than 40K.

What fucked it was the move towards huge 50 men regiments. At 28mm you have to keep it at 30 at the max unless you're Warlord and you're selling 40 Hoplites for £20.

Should have been kept to 10 for elite units, 20 for human sized and 30 for Goblins, Skaven and other lesser creatures.

He's right though. If Fantasy gets another crack of the whip then people have got to buy from FW or GW to keep it alive.

You'd think that GW would have the business savvy to know that very cheap troop boxes combined with a need for larger armies would create much better sales, as people would buy some units, realize they need more to be competitive, and then buy more, and they wouldn't feel bad about the expenditure because it feels small and worth their while.
>>
>>51814237

Yeah it was just a total fuck up really. If you're selling hyper-detailed 28mm models in boxes of 10 then you can't ask people to buy them in double digits, it's just ridiculous.

As I say though the prices on them weren't that bad, state troops were cheaper than the current Imperial Guard guys, Dwarfs are £1 a model etc.

Just total mismanagement. Funny how Priestly left the year 8th edition came out.
>>
>>51814209
$16 for a Finecast character was pretty obscene.
>>
>>51814294

Well I can't speak for the US but most Fantasy characters are £11 here. At a super cheap retailer like Warlord or Mantic they'll be about £7 to £10.

Battlefront are probably even worse than GW. 5 10mm metal tanks for the same price as 10 space marines that come in 100 pieces.

If anyone is interested in a west marches style game of Warhammer fantasy role play I am starting a game here:

I know the player count is low but I will increase it if there is a large amount of interest shown. It will be set in the border princes.

No, what I mean is that metal characters used to retail $14.99. Finecast went for $16.

I mean... $1 is far more? I'm not saying they should have done it but I was more pissed off about the ridiculous special and rare boxes that went from £20 to £35 and you needed 3 to do anything in 8th.
>>
>>51814516
Its $1 more, but for something completely cheap.

I mean, its one thing to jack up the cost year to year for inflation. But increasing the price and dropping the quality to what should be maybe $6 is just a joke.

I'd say far more for far less if plastic costing $9 went to $10 for paper.
>>
>>51814516
I didn't mind it so much, eBay has always been my friend on that. The quality of writing is what really bothered me, we got very little good lore for anyone after 6e. Novels became far more focused on the character than setting, army books were mostly just restating the same information, and lore on what was added was threadbare and focused almost 100% on a named character.
