Fuck yes you're the dude I was talking about. Now just to save that pic for reference this time.
Anon mentioned not feeling cardinals. Might try something that compliments the rest of the piece. Something akin to a bluejay maybe?
Also I concur the lips need "something" to stand out, even if its just a subtle outline.

>Johnnys have been slacking
Sorry, m8. Had to go into the office today and do some real work.
In the meantime, I found this lad on eBay. Price is a bit steep, but he did label the model "Brother Craig"... can't believe none of our elegan/tg/entleman have picked him up yet.
>>51387395
>Something akin to a bluejay maybe?
Go on ...
Is this gore proper?
Re-posting because of dead bread.
Start collecting box completed now I just gotta hope it doesn't rain tomorrow so I can prime and start painting. Want to do warp stone green with moot green highlights and biel-tan green wash would that look ok? Also will using white primer make it brighter?
>>51387511
It's appropriate representation of gore for a game where target audience ranges from 12 years upwards, yes.
If the question is about anatomical accuracy, go ask >>>/b/ or gurochan.
>>51387511
here's a similar piece from forgeworld

Eh, i think it's impossible to accurately portrait gore in a 28mm or 32mm scale
If you can prove me wrong that's actually be great.
>>51387756
Oh damn, thanks.
Gonna fix it up

What the hell do I use as staves for my Thousand Sons sorcerers? I've got plenty of 3rd party bits, lots of arms and bolters, basically everything I need to make 40 Rubric Marines, but I cannot for the life of me find any non-Terminator staves or other sorcerer-like bits being sold.
Not even sorcerer bits from the actual Rubric Marine box?
So I remember the guy who painted up some of his marines with spritstone red but has anyone tried doing it with the blue gem paint? Kinda curious about what it would look like
First Ork of the Waaagh, lads. Picture's not caught all the colour in the model for some reason, but rate it, /tg/.
>>51387817
I like the bone color on them jaws, how did you get it? Been having a hard time painting bone lately.

Mixed up 1:1:1 Vallejo Beige Brown, Medium Fleshtone and White, then Seraphim Sepia wash and then reapply the mix to lighten back up in places.
>>51387872
It is. Only thing that looks different is that lighter bits at the edge of the muscle isn't showing up quite as well.
>>51387511
Good start, maybe craft some internal structures/organs to add in.
>>51387946
The slave pits were denied this guardsmen because of over eager Kabalites eh? Looking good Crimson Archon Anon.
>>51387988
I'd always imagine that the soldiers would die in combat and it was mostly the civilians that went into slavery
I doubt anyone, not matter how much a wuss would surrender to dark eldar
>>51388016
They like to throw guardsmen and even space marines in there on rare occasions. Path of the renegade they go as far as to stage an escape for the guardsmen so they savor their 2nd defeat.
>>51387395
Looking sweet as always
One suggestion.
Because the birds are the same colour as some of the parts of Celestine, it makes them look unnatural. Wait until finishing the model to decide first, as the appearance of the model will change, but maybe a slightly different wash could fix this.
Also, the west spine on the Iron halo has a spot of white on it.

Go with the Proteus. Heavy bolters are more natural and common. Ergo Proteus is less common or natural.
Humans in warp is not common or natural.

Greater than the Ultramarines, the Hammers of Dorn have managed to utilize the Codex Astartes to a point not even the Ultramarines could have expected. The Hammers of Dorn scorn the Ultramarines and their uselessness, as well as their not being sons of Dorn, and therefore inferior and unable to truly master the Codex Astartes as they do.

Anyone know of good zombie bits like arms and maybe legs? Looking to convert 70 of these guys into plague zombies, remind me alot of the ghost people from FO NV: Dead Money
>>51390229
Have you looked at Mantic's Plague Zombie models?
>>51390245
After looking at them the proportions may be a bit wonky in comparison and would look out of place like the guard bits that are suggested. The legs don't look bad but the belt is on the legs, not the torso so I would have double belts. I'm going to have to keep looking
So, I have a ton of apoxie sculpt lying around that I got awhile back as an alternative to green stuff.
I've been thinking of trying my hand at sculpting a simple model, just a tall spooky dude covered in robes to wet my toes in regards to sculpting something larger than like, hair and a tabard. on a mini. I'm figuring a wire undermesh is a good starting point, but if anyone has any other pointers, I'd welcome the words of wisdom!

and back
I've been waiting for good Rubric Marine sculpts for ages, so I bit the bullet today and finally bought some. I got into PS and did a mock-up of the colour scheme l want (basically the Crimson Sons/pre-Heresy TS scheme). Would this formula replicate the red and gold well? All with colours I own.
>Red
>Base: Army Painter Chaotic Red
>Layer: Khorne Red
>Highlight: Wazdakka Red
>Highlight: Troll Slayer Orange (I want more orangey highlights than the pic)
>Gold
>Base: Retributor Armour
>Wash: Reikland Fleshshade
>Layer: Auric Armour Gold
>Highlight: Runefang Steel
I'm tempted to drop Runefang and buy some Stormhost Silver, since it has better coverage, but it tends to look quite stark when highlighting gold.

Here is the end result of the masking tape brothers.
I got these two for a an absolute steal from what I assume was a kid owner, drenched in superglue, although to his credit the turrets and sponsons move.
Initial stages of weathering are done, although I'll probably look at this again after work to see if there's anything I've missed with fresh eyes.
Next stage, Gloss varnish to allow for further weathering..

Yeah, I still have a few of the old hybrid TS that I never got around to painting, somewhere. I don't like those models anyway, so they're perfect for it.

Doom Eagles.
Their entire mentality is about being the most self-suffering fatalistic grim bastards possible, but all in the name of ensuring that mortal humans don't suffer like they do.
They all see themselves as being already dead and that suffering and pain is their lot in the universe and nothing will change that, so nothing can hold them back from fighting as hard as they can to protect the innocent and the faithful from feeling their suffering.
They're one of the only chapters that manages to be both very grimdark and very sympathetic about protecting regular humans, without those two sides of their mentality conflicting.
>All of creation suffers, young ones. Only in accepting our own mortality can we make a difference. Only in bearing the burden of our failures can we find the strength to go on. Only in detachment from glory, or honour, or jealousy... from life itself can we hope to spare others from grief.
>We are Doom Eagles. And we are dead already.

Bulked up custodes and/or stormcast, with a big fuck off chainsword, a generous amount of IF bits, and suitably impressive facial hair. It shouldn't be too costly money or time-wise and can stand in until FW get round to it.
>>51391812

Except for the large, empty blue parts of the shoulders and front which look super flat and boring. You could paint the rivets in front silver with a drop of nuln oil around them and maybe do some freehand 'egyptian' signs or a TS decal transfer on one shoulder. Also, can't be sure buzzt you seem to have done very few edge highlights.

Since I'm currently painting my Rubrics and after having done the big, red guy, do yourself the favour and buy Liberator Gold for layer and Stormhost Silver for highlights. They're much better than the 'earlier' metallic colours.
>>51388878
>that blade
Your paints...thin them
Started working on my scourges.
Any tips for what colors would go well with this armor color?
It is on stegadon green base and then works up from sotek green to kabalite green and finally syrabite green highlights with tiny bit of gaus blaster green edges, and over all of it, is a glaze of 1/1 guiliman blue and waywatcher green.
I am somewhat unsure of what other colors I should use for the weapons, wings, helmets (which this one doesn't obviously have) etc.
>>51392118
>Liberator Gold
I'm not so sure on this one. Going by the comparison pics I've seen online, it's a much more silvery gold than AAG, and I want a bit more of a yellow finish to it. The only advantage I can think of is the better coverage and consistency.
>Stormhost Silver
Yeah, I'm very tempted to buy some, but I'm already running low on money after buying the Rubrics, and it's apparently gone up to $9 a pot here in Australia. Damn it.
If I put a layer of seraphim sepia over my Death guard legion, is it going to make them all gummy, wet and pooled up, or is it going to add that extra element of wear and add small detail to slightly barren SM armour?
Recesses are already agrax'd
>>51392239
Ah, yeah if you want yellow-ish gold then Auric Armour is indeed the right choice and Stormhost probably too bright except for extremely sharp edges. As it stand I did most of my highlights with Runefang and only the most prominent with Stormhost.
>>51392265
>is it going to make them all gummy, wet and pooled up
This is entirely dependent on how much you put on. If you all but upend the pot on them, then yeah, this will be the result.
A WIP shot would be handy too, since we don't know what your DG currently look like.
>>51392284
>As it stand I did most of my highlights with Runefang and only the most prominent with Stormhost
I was actually considering this. I've noticed that Stormhost tends to be quite stark on top of gold compared with Runefang, since it's a little brighter and more pigment-rich. Using Runefang as the bulk of the highlight and using SS to enrich it at the sharpest points could look cool.
>>51392198
Starting Genestealer cults and want to work a similar style on the carapace. Plan to use incubi darkness, wash with greenshade, sotek highlight and finally sybarite green for a bluer green. I'd consider washing your base and highlight after so that the contrast stays more extreme.
Light purple is a good combination as well as brass, dark reds and strong silvers.
>>51392298
I've got a photo of an unfinished test one from 2 months ago, it'll have to do, but the newer ones are more detailed and finished up than this
>>51392298
Also forgot to add this, but keep in mind that a wash all over smooth armour surfaces can exaggerate defects that you won't want to draw attention to, if you just apply the wash and leave it at that. For example, areas where you removed mould lines and sprue gates can be a little rough, even if you smooth them down properly, and a wash can pool there and make it obvious.
>>51388959
...I did the exact same thing. Same rifle and everything. I think that kit has a curse on it.
>>51392372
Ah. In that case, I'd recommend avoiding the full wash, and instead use it in a more controlled way to add weathering. Like, add irregular blotches and streaks running from the recesses, in the direction of gravity, to imitate corrosion and rust. An all-over wash might ruin the off-white look and turn them pale brown.
>>51391427
>>51391436
It's from the Grey Knights purifier kit. I think there's like 2 in the pack so you'd need to make copies, really.
Or check bits sites.
>>51391642
Well, it's implied she does and she's just floating. I could've probably put in some gs feet at the bottom of the dress but I feel like it would detract from the model than add to it.
>>51389653
imo, you've got a hell of a start for a great diorama piece with it emerging from sand, muck, or lava. So you could skip the legs all together

How should I spray prime a model on a skimmer stand? I want to keep the stand clear, but then I can't prime the underside.
>>51392265
If you want wear and a bit of detail to break up flat space marine armour, google sponge weathering. That will be more want you want and isn't that complex.
>>51392737
Uhm, just turn it around once the top side is dry?
>>51392737
ideally don't attach the stand before you spray, use a spare flying stand or just wrap the whole thing in masking tape and hope for the best.

Do they have a common chaos god, are they unbound?
To be honest the tank itself looks a bit bland right now. The only added chaos bits seem to be the pointy things on top of the sponsons. The weapons arent chaosified at all.
I do however like the color scheme, and the scribble at the back is a nice idea. Maybe you could do the same everywhere on the model and write strange and psychotic slogans and kill marks all over the tank and cover it in arcane stuff to keep the daemonic engine tame.
Because right now it looks like a run of the mill russ kind of.

Stagger it. Get a squad of infantry done, then a vehicle, then a "special" model like a command squad or something. Reward yourself for getting through certain tedious bits. And take fifteen minute breaks if you start to feel yourself get tired or light-headed.
>>51392775
Thanks for your suggestion!
I'm going to add some more brass etch chaos stars and the like, and likely more graffiti. However, they should be run-of-the-mill tanks, because they are spoils of war captured by a renegade militia, not so much infused with warp stuff (yet).
But I agree they still look a bit bland.
>>51392801
Don't.
You'll probably get sloppy and your models will suffer for it.
Some times Hell just wants to clear out the annoying as fuck gay imps so it sends them in as front line troopers.
Finally got my Wazbom Blastajet for a blood axe army finished on the building side of things. Right now I'm kind of in a rough draft stage for my camo and was looking for some criticisms and suggestions . Right now it's sort of the 1st layer, was looking to give it a brighter red as a final layer and add patterns to the bottom.
Using the red patterns as an excuse for a red paint job and figure an olive green was a decent choice for the main backdrop.

I'm inclined towards the fat arm, because it fits better proportion wise, and the Axe-head for dramatic flare. The others seem a bit... small.

Good luck finding somewhere that stocks non-GW miniature paints that isn't online. I'd urge you to support a local shop above that though, even if it is a brick-and-mortar GW.

Either support your local independent art shop or https://www.rosemaryandco.com/
>files and whatnot
Files- online or model shop. Don't get GWs.
Side-cutters can be found in model shops, crappier ones can be found in hardware stores, and cheap model-oriented ones can be found on amazon.
Basing material (sand and cork) try a pet shop (reptile section), model shops for coarser model railway ballast, and B&Q for soft sand (less than 4 quid for more than you'll ever use).
Superglue- just buy it at the supermarket, if you need precise application pour a bit out and spread it on with a stick.
Plastic cement- amazon or GW

COLLAGE

Your colours lack depth. The red, the metallics, the handles on weapons at all boring areas lacking contrast and... that's basically all of the models. Get some highlights on the reds, get some dark recess shades on the armour and weapons.
Like, they're painted, which is great, but if you want better than bare minimum tabletop standard, you have some progress to make.
>>51394491
Prett much this
I'd start with inking the whole thing to get some depth than painting back up the surface areas, then highlight the edges. That alone will make it look 100 times better
Also nice to see a fellow Alpha Legionnaire - Hydra Dominatus
This might sound like an obvious question but do I have to finish painting a model before varnishing it or can I go over it later?
For example, I'm painting a tank and I want to add a gloss varnish so I can do some weathering but... I haven't painted the "viewing gems" / "viewing ports" on the tank... can I paint those afterwards at the end before applying the matte varnish or do I have to paint it on before the gloss?
sorry for the stupid question
>>51394552
There's absolutely no reason you can't paint different layers of varnishes and paints on top of each other, just make sure to put a gloss+matt varnish on as the final coat.

I buy pretty regularly, mostly metal (as its so much easier to strip and disassemble) but sometimes plastic too - it can be hit or miss. Sometimes you can get good deals but others you end up with something that takes tons of effort to rehab. Often people selling big lots of miniatures don't really know or care what it is, and you can get some good stuff from inaccurate (or overly general) auction titles if your searching skills are well-honed

Thin your paints.
Two smooth layers.
Remember the recesses and avoid pooling.
Seriously, watch every tutorial video you can but keep it diverse and watch several painters.
Learn to assemble first.
Remove moldlines. Use nice and natural poses.
Don't overdo it on scratch build stuff when you are a noob. Try to figure out which units you want before modelling your gear-bearing space mans.
Plastic cement for plastic on plastic.
Super glue for everything else.
Get some GW colors, get some other brands.
Notice the difference (in quality, price, color tone) and pick your palette based on experience you made.
Play a few games with unpainted shit. Seriously.
It will show you which units you like, which will boost you painting those.

Gaps are normal to an extent with metal; you're supposed to pin the parts together and, ideally, fill the gaps. Metal was never the ideal material, just relatively cheap and easy to work with.
I'm not sure about the structural soundness of plastic/resin legs under that weight; the Chaos dreads have a weird center of gravity because of the claws, so even a heavy, weighted base might see it tip over with plastic legs (or without) in some situations. Metal legs will help normalize the balance but it's up to you.
I don't know whether a hellbrute's legs would be strong enough to withstand the stresses of holding that up if you pinned it all together.
>>51398458
Thanks ill keep the magnet difficulty in mind and am going to start watching those vids
>>51398502
I keep hearing about thinning paints, I really am completely new to painting so Ive been trying to watch as many vids as I can but they dont seem to be for someone quite as new as I am usually. Any tips for assemly never bought a 40k kit before so im not fully sure what I got into as far as that. What do you mean by nature posed though, just posing them in ways that look right or do you mean posing them by some sort of mold fittings? So why plastic cement, is it easier to work with (remove?) or is it just because its strong and cheap. Even if the Orks may not be viable in play I do like their visual styles and lores and since ive been reading sanctus reach ive been especially digging stories from the ork perspective (Not likely their are many more stories from xeno perspective cept maybe eldars I bet). I love the way the units look and they seem like an easier model for a beginner as well being that they are naturally more dirty making it slightly more forgiving. I do plan on getting other armies in the future as I have been loving the 40k world but I did want to start with the orks

I didn't think it made sense to put a Mk I Thunder Suit in a combat unit. If a chapter even had some, they would be used for ceremonial occasions only. The model on the far left is one of the four artificer armour variants from before the Dark Age of Technology.
>>51398831
Extreme left? That looks like one of the earliest Marines, from before even the RTB-01 boxed set. It was basically proto-Mk VI, before they had to make even more design compromises so it'd work in plastic.

I only have the one, and it was damaged; I had to greenstuff some new molecular bonding studs on the left shoulder pauldron to make it look normal. I've occasionally thought about buying another one to recast, but they're hard to find and frequently expensive to boot. That being said, I'd probably make it in metal anyway... although I am warming up to working in resin ...
>>51399009

>>51398957
What kinda lists are viable for Orks? I mean I want the models for their looks more than anything but it would be nice to be able to play once in a while and not get completely rolled over.
>>51398891
>I didn't think it made sense to put a Mk I Thunder Suit in a combat unit. If a chapter even had some, they would be used for ceremonial occasions only.
Yeah, it doesn't really make sense when you think about it. It'd effectively be downgrading them to carapace armour-level defense, probably have some speed or initiative penalty due to the non-powered legs, and take away the advantage of being able to fight in extreme environmental conditions. That's exactly why Forge World doesn't make full squads of it.
It'd be cool for a limited edition display model or something though.
>>51398912
I play orks but no nids. Orks are pretty ok if your enemy uses a fairly toned down list and/or lady luck is on your side.
The SEEM to be a "tough heavy melee but also weird and situational ranged" faction, but are topped by almost any other faction in both those fields. Their stats are subpar pointswise and their wargear is essentially pretty common among a few other races. The special rules suck. Waaagh sounds cool on paper, but can't hold itself to other one shot faction skills.
Their vehicles are... meh. Ork walkers are junk (yeah ok, literally) compared to other walkers.
Ork tanks are pretty weak or too expensive for their boom. Ork transports are... well, kinda mandatory. Even more, compared to other races.
All in all they have been a "fun army, but also your enemy kinda needs to know what he is doing when facing you, also sometimes depending on luck awesome shit happens to your orks when bad things should happen", but last codex nerfed them to "Orks beat each other to a pulp before even reaching the enemy".
>>51398895

You can use tap water to thin paints.
Put a drop of paint on a palette and soak up ur brush. Move your brush into the side of the paint drop. See how the paint reacts.
Clean your brush thoroughly in water, get the water out by using a napkin.
Now use your paint/water mix on the palette to draw away a bit of both and experiment with the consistencies on a mini or bit of sprue.
A fucked up pose WILL draw attention from table top range. So when you assemble the model you might want to put it down and move a bit out to see the placement of the limbs or heads or whatever.
If you like orks just go and paint em.
>>51399052
shitloads of warbikers (expensive kit) plus zhadsnark (expensive forgeworld kit) plus tankbustas and grots
>>51399150
Thanks for the tips on paint thinning using the sprue to test paints is also a good idea. Do you have any examples of bad poses by chance? And I do like the Orkz quite a lot and find it a shame that they seem to be as bad an army as ive heard.
>>51399220
>poses
Well, standard orks have very static legs, most of the time both feet on the ground, so posing the arms as they were moving might seem a bit odd.
You could invest in blutac (which you should anyway for propping shit) and prepose a model to see how it looks. You'll get the hang of it after a few (dozen) boys...
Don't get overwhelmed by metarule shit. Who knows, ork might be pretty op in next codex, and then it's your turn to tone down your "cheese" list.
>>51399044
>a metal/resin johnny and a metal/resin artificer armour 4 is all i want

>>51399338

>>51399349
>What is blutac?
It's a blobby gum adhesive frequently used to hold posters on the walls of places that frown on one's putting nails in them, like rented flats. You use blutac to stick model pieces together to test poses or fits, and to temporarily gum a model by its base to another object so you can pick it up and paint it without actually touching it.

>>51395050
Sentinel legs look spindly compared to the thiccness the dreads call a chest and might not support the weight too well... and it would be mega top-heavy.
>>51395118
Yeah looking at the options on ebay from bits sellers, space wolves have some that have pointy toes that fit pretty nice, might have to go for those. Considering the problem that >>51398793 brings up, I was thinking about using the treads from the kataphron. It would keep it fairly close to the ground and make it unique from other dreads but I'm not entirely sure about being able to just buy the lower half of one, if it divides easily, or if it's big enough to not look stupid. I like the idea of a unique dread but it might be more pain in the ass than it's worth.

both have similar functions, but from what I'm reading Blutack tends to leave less residue than plasticine.
What are some fun alternative representations for a flying hq model besides just wings, specifically mechanicus theme. The servo arm tentacles is an obvious option, but trying to think of some alternatives to pick the best one from the lot.

Take engines from Blight drones and make a helicopterchanicus
Or a rad hover skateboard on jet engines
Or make a grav disc

Just checked, and >>51398891 is actually correct. I mistook the helmet for Mk VI-style.

Alright thanks, and if anyone else has some more ideas feel free to share I'll check back.

whats your recasting process?

Thanks anon.
Are there any airbrush supplies I should get also that I will need? (besides the actual air compressor)
>>51400592
I have a couple more, desu.
-Iron man-like hand/foot jets (or model feet and hands transformed but still appendage looking, like Jenny from My Life as a Teenage Robot)
-ServoSkulls or those winged babies holding the priest up by wires would be cool, but seems hard to accomplish
-A Palanquin(sp?) Or some other throne or seat, suspended by either skim engines, or held up by something(maybe like an Ethereal Aun'va chair)
I wish i could make some of these in my auxiliaries army.
Holy hell i love the paint scheme featured on the community page for Gangs of Commorragh.
How would one go about recreating this ? The black and silvery metal is easy enough, but what paints should be used for the bright orange ?

The cherub idea is pretty neat. My idea with the servo arms was just making it look like Serial Experiment Lain tier as a collection of wires and random machinery getting caught up in this writhing mass of technology.
I also thought of just some sort of grav tech or something holding it up but then adding some extra models in to get a sort of after image effect like this.
>>51400969
looks like troll slayer orange and fire dragon bright 2 me - not exactly esoteric alchemy
>>51401347
True, but it just seemed like a good idea to ask people whom are much more knowledgeable than me on identifying paints.

Any help with this?

THE FLESHCHANGE BROTHER
If I'm going to use this guide to clone some bits (for mods, etc) what kind of material should I get to fill the mold? I've heard someone say plumber epoxy but I don't think they knew what I was talking about.
Guide in question:

Completely by accident. My apolgoies

>plumber epoxy
kneadite aka GS is basically plumber epoxy, although less detrimental to your health if used regularly afaik.

I use two-part molds made of RTV silicone. Previously, I had been using Micro Mark 1-to-1, a blue rubber that cures in about four hours, but its tear strength is pathetic; it's not much tougher than Velveeta cheese. I tried making a mold of Johnny with Alumilite High Strength 3 to use with low-temperature alloys, and got a few successful metal casts, so that may be the direction I go in the future. It resists tearing much better, and can tolerate the heat of a mostly-tin pewter alloy long enough for the metal to become solid again.
The resin Johnny in that picture was made using the same mold - I just injected AlumiRes instead of pouring in molten metal, and squeezed it until I got most of the air bubbles out. Obviously, I didn't get them *all* - notice that resin Johnny has no feet - but that tells me where I need to cut gates in the mold, so hopefully my next attempt will yield a Space Marine who can actually stand up without crutches.
Just in case this falls off the face of the Earth (or off the bottom of page 11, at least), we have another /wip/ thread over at >>51387383.
