And since I made the thread, I'm gonna be asking the first question!

What the hell do I use as staves for my Thousand Sons sorcerers? I've got plenty of 3rd party bits, lots of arms and bolters, basically everything I need to make 40 Rubric Marines, but I cannot for the life of me find any non-Terminator staves or other sorcerer-like bits being sold.

Not even sorcerer bits from the actual Rubric Marine box?

should I gloss coat then matte coat or just matte coat?
>>
>>51390795

If you were thinking of doing gloss coat for extra protection you can get the same effect by just spraying matte coat one or two more times. Gloss isn't magically more protective than matte, it's the same chemical in both cans except with a matting agent in matte varnish. Only reason it's more protective is because it tends to spray thicker.

Here is the end result of the masking tape brothers.

I got these two for a an absolute steal from what I assume was a kid owner, drenched in superglue, although to his credit the turrets and sponsons move.

Initial stages of weathering are done, although I'll probably look at this again after work to see if there's anything I've missed with fresh eyes.

Next stage, Gloss varnish to allow for further weathering.

waiting on the actual marneus model my friend bought me to add some minor parts details from it to this model.
not completely sold on his fists, still need a lot of work. and im tossing up scrapping most of them and just using wire sorrounded by guitar strings and rods to imitate his bionic arms. also not sure what to do with the helmet/head. want it to be a helmet, scared to cut the head out of this, might use this helmet but paint a red glow effect on the right eye to make it look like his bionic eye. thoughts??

>>51404440
You're supposed to concentrate the highlights towards the most prominent details on the face, not towards the everything.
>>
>>51404440
The real issue here is you use WAYYYY too much flayed one flesh. That's supposed to be a tiny extreme highlight.

If you're a beginner you should simplify things. Just do bugman's as an undercoat, get a solid complete coat of kislev and shade it. You can stop here. Dont even do the eyes. just leave them shadowed. If you do want to highlight then a baby step is to highlight with the Kislev flesh again. That way if you all to much it won't be as obvious.

But really, way, way, way less FOF.
>>
>>51404492
>with Mk3 or Mk4 armor?
It's probably easier to go for Mk IV armour, since that'll give you access to a wide range of Forge World kits (like the Mk IV parts in the Red Scorpions Honour Guard kit). Mk III, not so much, unless you collect one of the handful of First Founding Chapters/Legions that got Horus Heresy upgrades in that Mark.
>>
>>51404440
it looks like the pain might be on a little too thick in general. aim more for an even skin tone and then do the layering from there, it looks like you're doing highlights straight over your base coat with no intermediary layer, like cadian fleshtone.
>>

I can do the glowing eyes just fine. I do it on my GK all the time. I wouldn't dare try pupils, though. It actually looks "better" with more of the FoF, but so far I just gave everything another thin coat of Kislev to restart.

>>51404722
>too thick
This shit's already like water. I don't know how thin it should be if it's almost like water. And please don't use the "milk consistency" analogy. I just can't grasp it for whatever reason. As for no Cadian Fleshtone, the Kislev Flesh is the substitute for it. I followed Duncan's video recipe. Bugmans>Kislev>Reikland>Flayed one.
>>
>>51404799
you can try to bring the colours together a bit with a reikland wash over those highlights, but I reckon it's still a bit bright. If i'm trying to do some highlights on a face and I cant trust thinned paint to go where i want it, sometimes i do a sneaky little drybrush on the cheeks and stuff since you have a lot more control over how it builds up.
>>
Time to make some Rhino conversions.
>>
>>51404728
Not especially different. Painting 1:1 faces ain't exactly going to give you the skills and know-how necessary to paint 1:48 faces.
>>
>>51404787
Those colours make me want to go and hire a mariachi band for some reason.

>>51404799
I generally go for somewhere between a 2:1 or 3:1 paint-water ratio when it comes to thinning most paints (exact amount depends on the type of paint). The paint should feel more fluid when you move it around with a brush on your palette, but not to the point where it starts looking transparent or blotchy, or where the consistency feels closer to water than paint.

It's a good idea to take some pieces of sprue from a plastic kit and test on there, just to get the consistency right.

Well, the average woman will have spent more time learning about makeup.
Contouring is basically faking light and shadow on your face to change the bone structure of your face.
Which is exactly what you do when you paint a miniature. You try to fake how light falls on a smaller object, but the same principles apply.

Which is why the advice to have a look at makeup tutorials comes up quite frequently.
The knowledge is transferrable.

Mk III is too brutal and iconic. Mk IV "fits" more. The helmet and shoulders from Mk III are fine to mix in though and give a very obvious ancient look. Using just the chest, or just the legs is also done by Forge World in 40K for Salamanders and Astral Claws and looks alright. Mk IV is the easiest to mix and make look good.

Everything looks like ass on the camera. By the time your painting has crossed the magic line where your stuff actually looks good on camera, you'll already be at Golden Daemon competition winning quality.

Even the guys who post nice models here that look good, but aren't necessarily 2016 Golden Daemon level would have won gold in Golden Daemon 2005-2008.

So does anyone else have weird experiences with Vallejo's flat blue paint? Even when shaken up and thinned, it still feels a little hard to worth with, and that it separates real easy. They are a... Complicated chapter. Pledged in service to an Inquisitor (Red Hunters tactics), but said inquisitor is radical Xanthite and has manipulated the mnemonic redaction protocol Red Hunters go through post-mission for this band specifically, to her own advantage. Far enough away and hard enough to track down they aren't going missing any time soon. They brought Mark 4 with them, and it's still what they're using.

Some fluff is still up in the air. A few squads of Marines declared killed in action is one thing, but bringing parts of the armory with it... I'm leaning more towards a reboot of Corax's genetic funtimes with way less regard for how fucked up the subjects come out, and the gear being sourced from Heresy-era emergency stocks thought lost in the intervening 10,000 years.

I way overdid answering your question. Loyalist aesthetics, yes.

What's the best way to get paint slime off minis after they have been soaked in dettol? I assumed that i'd just be able to scrub the paint off with a brush but it's really pasty and just sticks back onto the model.
>>
>>51407937
If you've used water then you're fucked mate, sorry.

You need to clean dettol gunk off with methylated spirits or something similar, water will turn the paint/dettol mixture into something impossible to remove.

You'll need to re-soak them and then try again with meths.
>>
>>51407937
scrub em in metho
do NOT get dettol soaked minis near water
the scum just fucks everything
a rinse in metho will turn all the paint into fine ground pigments that stay suspended in the metho and eventually settle out so you can filter it clean.
just have adequate ventilation, do it outdoors.
>>
>>51407247
Good points.
Admittedly, the rest of my stuff is FAR higher quality, this was just an attempt to use up some of my extra shitty bits I had floating round to maybe just make a tabletop mini I may not even use.
That being said, the head actually doesn't look like a blob of chewing gum in real life, the camera captures it really badly, something about the colour I think.
Most of the parts, especially the chest, were already broken to the point I was considering the bin, and, frankly, I like my Crozius, as it is unique, and a far better rendition to the one I had before.
Also, I have not yet painted it properly, so I might not turn out so bad.

Somewhat related PSA for North American anons:
If you see one of these (pictured) fuckers flying around in your room/house, kicking up dust and all other kinds of bullshit, capture and drown them- or alternatively, starve them.

They cause me all sorts of problems with dust, which leads to me not painting so it doesn't get caught in my shit, and I was tossing them outside until I learned they sneak back inside houses, and that they're an invasive species and agricultural pest.

If you see one or more fluttering around your lights while you're trying to paint, model, or anything else, do your part to purge this filth. But don't crush them; that's a bad idea.
>>
>>51408433
A harmless shield bug. y anon?
>>
>>51408538
A.) Stink bug.
B.) It's an invasive species and an agricultural pest. They cause a great deal of damages to crops, namely on the East coast, and they have few predators (again, because they're from China and native species are unfamiliar with them). If I recall correctly they've only been here maybe 20 years at the most.
>>
>>51408433

Or try not living in a mudhut that has insects running around?
>>
>>51408559
Luckily I am tucked away safely in glorious Western Europe, where wildlife only exists because we allow it to.

>>
>>51408571
"The bug survives the winter as an adult by entering houses and structures when autumn evenings become colder, often in the thousands. In one home more than 26,000 stinkbugs were found overwintering."

"They will enter under siding, into soffits, around window and door frames, chimneys, or any space which has openings big enough to fit through."

Unless your house is hermetically sealed, they tend to find some way in. It's only when they get into the main rooms of a house that they "wake up" from their hibernation state and cause problems.
>>

I've seen a lot of models ruined by airbrushing. This is an example of it enhancing the model.
>>
>>51412671
What makes you think it was airbrushed?

In any case airbrushes are just another tool.
I don't get why people have such a hateboner for it.
Sure, some people do three coats with an airbrush and throw it on ebay, some people do the same with a regular brush or a spraycan though. The fixation on the tool seems irrational to me.
What counts is the end result.

Thanks for the kind words! About aiming, I did make a wonky scope and a big button on the side - which I'm totally painting red =)

I wonder how I could have avoided messy parts on the top, I tried to cover empty spots with Tamiya putty white, but it very dense to properly lay it down and dries too quickly. Is it possible to liquify it?
>>
>>51413231

Maybe a big fucking lever.

Messy parts on top will be no problem after painting. Since this is ork gear. Messy and orky go hand in hand.

Check if your putty is acrylics based. If yes a bit of water. Vallejo has plastic putty in dropper bottles which I couldn't get the hang of at first. Then I diluted it with water and used it as a semiliquid filler. Works like a charm and doesn't get crumbly.

Yes. You need one coat of black to cover white. You need four coats of white to cover black.
Prime white, wash it down with a light grey, be as messy as you want there and then paint the black in before doing highlights on the black and white parts of your scheme.

I will never understand why people insist on ruining their models with the retarded googly-eyes. At this scale a humans eyes are so small there is zero reason to try and paint them.

It makes the model feel more complete, and since its such a small detail it will go unnoticed on the tabletop if it doesn't look perfect.

It works at range. The head is tilted down, you only see a bit of the eyes anway, but that helps to convey the idea of the model looking on its target.

Hey /wip/,
I need your help.
I've been wondering how much large of a surface area I could cover with one package of 12 Oyumaru sticks.

To give you an idea of what I want to do:
I've got a Garden of Morr set and want to build some additional Mordheim style scenery. My idea was to make a mold of the wall sets and cast them to cover the walls of the lowest buildings I'm gonna make. The walls do have doorframes and whatnot so I figured it would be a quick and easy way to add loads of detail without much work. I have experience with casting in silicone and resin, but don't want to waste the more expensive silicone on a one-off project.

Basically my question is do you think I could cover the wall sections of the Garden of Morr set with one package or do I need more?

The section with the gate is about 15x9cm (6x3.5 inches), the smaller one 11x6cm (4.3x2.3 inches).

Spraying all of the sprues along with the models, wasting tons of primer.

Still having to clean the mouldlines off all the models, and then recoat with primer?

It's the furthest thing from efficient.
>>
>>51415391
Depends how red your tan is
>>
>>51415395
You will be gluing primer to primer, unless you scrape it off before you glue your individual pieces. Drilling barrels or adding damage, also (i realize this is lizards so no drilling barrels, but any other chopping would have to be reprimed too)

Also any extra bits you have for conversion seem like something id leave blank.

Ah, makes sense. Yeah, wasn't sure about the gold, since that's probably the biggest issue in the paint scheme, as white/blue obviously works and I don't feel like the red dash of color is a problem either.

Dropping the gold also probably helps with integrating the colors into vehicles.
