Biodrone Edition. It's been a few months since Howling Shadows came out, and slightly less than a few months since people came up with all the rules that CGL didn't include because they are assholes. What cool cybercritters have you seen in your games? What have you had to outwit/outplay/outlast? Have you spend obscene amounts on a pet genetically designed for optimum cuddles?

Bunny bomb.

It was literally just a rabbit with a Cortex bomb that blows up like a frag grenade when hugged.

I mean... it worked, but...

No, well, not yet. Maybe eventually. It was actually meant for hookers. Long story short, the barrens have kinda become Old Town from Sin City.

Would it make sense for a guy who has a serious beef against spirits to have a mentor spirit?
>>
>>51024246
Define "serious beef"
>>
>>51024268

I'm working on building a Banish focused NPC. Like, probably rolling 20+ dice, depending on if I make him standard, or give him stuff beyond what a standard CC character would have.

If he sees a spirit, it is his first target. If someone has bound spirits and they're communicating with him, he'll demand that the spirits be sent away. he always maintains a high-force Spirit Zapper spell around his home.
>>
>>51024246
Mentor Spirits might not be spirits, Mentor Spirit is just the blanket term thats used for that sort of relationship.
If your Exorcist is a Christian, his 'mentor spirit' could be any number of Angels or Saints.

The Mage
The Mage gets fucked up by an Ancient, so she pops her own bracelet to send a separate DocWagon team in.

We found out later that she wasn't "kidnapped" by the Ancients and instead was slumming it willingly. Of course, the parents didn't approve of their daughter hanging out with a group of go-gangers, but didn't want to get police involved because they were scandalized by the whole situation. So sure, why not trust a Mr. Johnson to hire a bunch of mercs to convince your shitty daughter to come home.

As I recall, Banishing is just really not very good at all.
>>
>>51025234
>Do you wish your real life sessions were more often? Are the sessions slower or faster than you'd like?

Once every week would be perfect. Right now I'm getting about 2 a month, and my friends haven't even gotten themselves married yet. I'm probably going to have to get a new group once one of them gets engaged, since we'll basically never play after that point.

Sessions end up being 4-8 hours, which I think is fine when people have adult lives to attend to.

>Firstname Lastname
>scanner crit-glitched to save your ass
That's your lucky SIN now. Hold onto it 'till it gets burned. Broadcast it whenever you do normie stuff.

Also, use your R4 SIN for the cops. Unless you're planning on just bribing them anyway, in which case use money. Run Faster says that ¥100 is a "good" bribe amount. In the hands of a competent face, that should like plenty to make some underpaid cop look the other way for a few minutes.
>>
>>51025562
While making a melee character in SR is totally viable, it's not for everyone. I don't think you'll be getting enough out of what you have to justify it being your sole method of attack. Furthermore, carrying around a polearm but no gun at all when your a human sort of screams 'I'm a mage please geek me'.
I presume your going to be adding more equipment and improving that SIN so I won't touch on that. Pick up a ballistics mask, though.
You don't have any perception, sneaking, or con.
Not only do you have six (!) dice in banishing, you also have improved ability (banishing) at rating six (and I think you can only have improved ability at half your base skill). This is not optimal. You also don't have stunball or IMPROVED invisibility. Or summoning, which is like the single best skill for mages (though I'd imagine it doesn't fit the concept).
I dunno, man, it seems like you're building around a concept that isn't really supported in SR.
>>
If you built a mage or shaman to focus on protective magic, would it end up boring?
>>
>>51025932
>you can only have improved ability at half your base skill

This
>>
>>51025932

You can only have improved ability to 1.5x your skill rating. So, if you have 2 points in something, you can go up to 3, if you have 6 ranks in banishing, it goes up to 9.

Yeah, I should buy a gun, and I full play on it when I have more money.

I'll re-tweak some of my skills to get those (and automatics so I can use said gun).

Really, this guy is just supposed to be that odd Anti-spirit, and I know banishing sucks. I really do.

>>51026404

>The maximum improvement possible is your current skill level x 1.5 (rounded up).

>Current skill x 1.5

6 x 1.5 = 9
>>
>>51026470
Thats exactly what the two quotes you are quoting are saying.
>>
>>51026586

No, they're saying that I can only have improved ability at HALF my base skill. The rules say that I can have improved ability at at One and a half times my base skill.

It's the difference between having 3 improved ability and 9 improved ability, when the base skill is at 6
>>
>>51026612
Your total augmented skill level can go to 1.5* your current level
Since you have Banishing 6 your augmented rating in it can only go to 9
>>
>>51026612
"they", which includes me, are saying you can improve your skill by half your skill Level with "improved ability", exactly like in the formula you posted.
Stop being so dense please.
>>
>>51026668

When I'm wrong, I'm wrong.

I was misreading it as saying that I can have improved ability at a rating of 1.5x my skill rating.

That... sucks, all things considered, but, what can i do. Oh well, I'm sure I can find some use for another 1.5 Power points.

All the good Assault Rifles are legally Forbidden. Considering the nature of a shadowrunner's job, I shouldn't worry too much about my weapons' legality should I?
>>
>>51029053
depends on your archetype
Having a weapon at R or even legal means that with a Fake license you can get it through security checks, while with a F weapon you HAVE to smuggle it, no way around it
So for a infiltrator it might make sense to get a R weapon or Taser, since for them making as much damage as possible isn't a high priority, while a sammy might spend more effort/dosh/favours to get his Anal-Annihilator to where the run is

I made a troll physical infiltrator once. Maximum Strength, melee for silent weapon kills, and a focus on non-hacking-based security shit. Physically disabling alarms, picking locks, installing loopers onto security cameras, using crowbars on lockers, plasma cutters - the whole shebang.

His combat strategy usually involved ducking around a corner and activating his chameleon suit to reestablish stealth, then coming back in for a melee sneak attack.

His fatal flaw - the one that got him killed - was being too thick to squeeze out of a building on the verge of self destructing through the narrow gap available, without enough time to widen it. He died still trying to cut his way to freedom.

Rip in piece. You were too good for this sixth world.

Not the guy that asked, but is it that unusual for me as a GM to ask all that all the PCs have a 'normal' job? I was under the impression that Shadowruns, while lucrative, aren't jobs you can really rely on.
>>
>>51030448
Unless the theme of your game includes all the runners being SINners, then having a Day Job is extremely unusual.
>>
>>51030448
Day Job is its own Negative Quality. It's very much the exception, not the norm, for runners.
>>
>>51030448
depends on the status of the PCs, their location, whether they have SINs or not and of course how much money they make with their runs
For some runners it's the only way to keep up their lifestyle, for other it's a way of life and they focus fully on it and for others it is at best a secondary money source due to shitty pay

As an example: I as a GM make it that my runners earn enough per month to pay for their lifestyle and a little extra. If you want a secondary job then it's mostly to get some extra dosh or for roleplaying purposes

>>
>>51030630
Still very weird.
>>
>>51030630
Even jobs like that require a SIN. Hell, you'd need a SIN to even get in the door in those places to buy something. If you want your runners to have jobs you are going to be talking "dishwasher in Barrens bar", "undocumented farmer", "scab worker", etc.
>>
Would it be too much of a buff to let AIs and Technos get programs for free?

>>
>>51030630
>Not complete wageslaves, but Clinic nurses, coffeegirls, and !Wal-Mart employees. Are those a bit more normal?
All of those - every last one of those - is represented with the Day Job negative quality. They're the exception, not the rule.

Half of the reason people become shadowrunners is to NOT have a day job. To only work five high-risk, high-reward nights per month, instead of having a daily grind.

I had a street sam that had explosives as a side line skill. My advise would just be demolitions pool. A bomb maker is like a lockpicker. In real life it's this huge array of technical knowledge. In shadowrun it's a single skill.

If he wants to go full on bomb thrower I guess heavy weapons for grenade/missile launchers.

Cause corps don't hire magic injun hitmen.

>>
>>51030448

Shadowruns arent very reliable, but they're extremely lucrative, and most runners are SINless, which means they literally are incapable of getting jobs because they don't exist.

Now, as to why they don't retire after they rack up enough money to BUY themselves a lifestyle at Medium+, that's for your characters to decide.
>>
>>51031194
Because they're going for High, have a vendetta, or just don't have the mindset to get out of the biz would be the usual answers.

Also being dragged back in works in the right cases.
>>
>>51031194
Is "I need more power!" not a good enough reason?
There's nothing quite like the ridiculously high stakes of a Shadowrun to really push them to their limits.

>You could get a shitty job with a decent fake SIN.
This is represented by the Day Job negative quality.
>>
>>51031327
Yup. The person I responded to said runners couldn't get jobs because they were SINless, which doesn't make sense because any half-decent runner has a good fake SIN. If they really wanted a job they could get one.
>>
>>51031194
>Now, as to why they don't retire after they rack up enough money to BUY themselves a lifestyle at Medium+, that's for your characters to decide.
Because they're a livestreaming Electronic Witness celebrity runner trying to get their Fame maxed out. Once their Fame is high enough to be making 50k per month (600k per year) from their simsense recordings, they'll coast on that forever.

It's kinda this. At least half the characters I've played had some combination of aiming to make it big and retire and revenge against someone who ruined their life. The current one is an adept that started with both reasons and is slated to keep going just for the high stakes improvement.

>>51031555
you use the commlink for talking, not for securing all of your devices.
Your commlink doesn't even need to be hooked up to your devices, it can be entirely apart.
>>
>>51031509
>extremely short range wireless signals
So you'd have a device which can send and recieve wireless signals, connect to all your devices and has a high firewall to prevent entry
So essentially your commlink
>>
>>51031594
yes, if you want the unsecure method that is still loads more secure than a device that picks up signals from everywhere.

It just seems dumb to me that they use a commlink app for security and not, I dunno, a dedicated router or firewall box.
>>

>>
>>51031630

well your commlink isn't just your phone
think less phone and more Smartphone/Laptop
even the weakest commlink on the market is able to send and receive brainwaves as long as you set up a connection (trodes or Datajack) and that fast enough that you can run some impressive stuff on them

even the weakest commlink is FAR faster than your average PC-Tower
>>
>>51031508
Rip in piece, not RIP in piece.
>>
>>51031667
but why?
the signaling method can't be too different or else it wont be able to communicate with your devices
and the part that makes it secure (the firewall) is just software

as said before: you can either just use your commlink as a wireless router or you can connect them with wires

That dedicated device? It's your commlink.

A commlink isn't just a phone. It's the primary computer of the Sixth World. It's the best you get short of a full-on Host.

What kind of security would a Hospital have?

Looking to set up a run where they are supposed to steal a shitload of medical supplies (Delivered to the Orc Underground, because Humanis has been getting a bit too trigger happy and they're running really low on medical equipment)
>>
>>51031870
>What kind of security would a Hospital have?
Depends on what kind of hospital, just like in real life.

It would vary by wing too.
>>
>>51031880

That's... helpful, I suppose.

But at the same time, I have no idea how to appropriately describe myself further.

Large hospital, with large storage rooms, not minor emergency clinics that have shit for supplies.
>>
>>51031907
Is it public or private?

Is it on university grounds? Megacorporate grounds?

Is it a religious hospital? A research hospital? A government hospital?

What kind of specialty wings does it have, aside from standard emergency rooms?

Hospitals aren't one-size-fits-all in even the slightest way. You need to define what it actually is, because 'hospital' is a category with absurd variability.
>>
>>51031945

Public, Government.

And... is there a 'general hospital'? The point isn't to fuck up sick or injured people, but to help the Ork Underground.

I mean, Megacorp sounds like a good choice, but these guys are only a couple games past standard, I don't know if they could handle directly fucking with a Megacorp.

Just looking for a hospital that is big, has a lot of supplies, all of which would be covered by insurance, so that the hospital isn't left 'wanting' for too long.
>>
>>51031907
What kind of area is it in and is it privately funded?

If it's in a shithole zone like somewhere close to the barrens it would be likely to have serious and unsubtle security, as it would risk being raided by gangers looking to score drugs or just cause shit, as well as dealing with unstable drug casualties. If it's an upmarket area frequented by the wealthy and corp elite the security is likely to be more subtle as it would rely on the relative security of it's location and other local assets like Knight errant to keep it safe, but it would probably have much stronger matrix and magical defence to protect it's client's privacy, with physical security being more along the lines of discretely hidden turrets and panic buttons for the parent company's local HTR team.
>>
>>51032015
>Megacorp sounds like a good choice, but these guys are only a couple games past standard, I don't know if they could handle directly fucking with a Megacorp.
Just because it's owned by a mega doesn't mean they automatically throw only their best security devices and personnel at it.
>>
>>51032015
Then what you actually probably want to raid is a military hospital for the security corps of a corporation that the party, collectively, thinks are cunts. That's your best bet for a place that will be immediately restocked and where the only people who will get hurt are people that the party doesn't give a flying fuck about anyway.

On the one hand, that means there's a good chance that even the doctors and patients will be packing sidearms.

On the other hand, that means they should have caches of combat drugs in the hospital pharmacy, and they probably have a stockpile of Used, Standard, and Alpha-grade cyberware and bioware in high-security lockups somewhere on-site.

The caveat, though, is that the pharmacy, the cyberware lockup, and the bioware cold room will all be three separate locations. The runners will have to prioritize, and see whether they want to try to make out like bandits, or cut and run after the first haul, keeping in mind that the longer they stick around, the faster security will ramp up, considering where they are.
>>
>>51032015
>I don't know if they could handle directly fucking with a Megacorp.
Megacorps don't get mega by throwing big money at small problems. Fucking with megacorps is the most reliable way to deal with garbage security, because someone in management made the call that they wanted to save money that quarter on not getting fresh training and security devices, because saving money is how you earn that promotion.
>>
>>51032066

I'm liking this. And after the last run... this could work.

I need to look up Hospital blueprints, don't I?

And what kind of security are we looking at anyways? Yes, Doctors and patients are packing sidearms, but there's a difference between the doctor being able to defend himself with a revolver, and every 3rd room having a HTR team in it.
>>

>>
>>51032105

Serious security at the actual pharmacy and other lockups. Bored patrol guards on each floor whose main job is actually to serve as extra muscle - glorified orderlies. Any HTR teams will come in from off-site but, considering what the place is, they'll be coming within five minutes of a major alarm getting tripped.

The longer the crew can go without an external alarm signal going out, the better their chance at taking the whole haul.

Japanocorps. Japan is super racist - even moreso than in real life - and it extends to metas too. Renraku is a good pick - they have a lot of very embarrassingly public discriminatory policies in place that would make shadowrunners be disappointed, but not surprised, to find them funneling Humanis money.
>>
>>51031366
That costs thousands of nuyen. The average SINless scrag doesn't have tens of nuyen to rub together.
>>
>>51032203
>and then they need to deal with the actual drekheads
Which, again, since it's a VA hospital for a corporation's security corps, probably includes the doctors (trained as combat medics and then as medical doctors, with combat training and possibly field experience) and patients (ranging from a kid fresh out of the academy and now on life support, possibly about to get robocopped all the way up to turbo-veterans coming in for their annual cyberware tuneup).

If your runners are smart, they'll find a way to check the shift rotations and scheduled appointments, matrix-stalk everyone on both lists, and then pick a time to hit the hospital when no super-badass doctors or patients are due to be in the building. Reward the shit out of that kind of foresight. Proper legwork should make otherwise very hard runs not just easier but wildly easier.

If your runners are stupid, they'll hit it at some random time semi-blindly and you'll be well within your rights to tear them a fresh asshole. Hopefully they steal enough medical supplies and 'ware to get that new asshole patched up.
>>
>>51032203
In the event of Evo, this hospital should have some really heavily cybered patients in it.
So like, ignoring security and suchforth, you've also got a dude with a tank where his legs should be and an implanted grenade launcher inside that tank.
>>
>>51032271

It might be a soft cap, but it's a very durable soft cap.

You can go up to 12 from 6, but it takes you 114 karma and 99 weeks of training. That's just under two years of training alone, nevermind the shit you go through just to get that much karma. Even if you have a really good trainer you're still topping a full year of training.

For that much karma, you could achieve a more well-rounded character, shoring up all kinds of skills and attributes, being able to serve other roles in a pinch, probably eliminating most of your greatest weaknesses. and becoming a much stronger runner for it. If you wanted, you could take a whole skill group from R0 to R6. Or you can blow all of it on +6 to one single skill that you already had 18 dice in.

So it just doesn't seem like a great idea to keep pumping your best skill instead of branching out.

So if your troll has 14 Strength your Boomerang will hit the poor fucker for 16p, about the same as a goddamn Barret Model 122. As a bonus, you can still toss around flashbangs and smoke grenades accurately.

Mechanically, Attribute Boost (AGI) is way better than a rating of Combat Sense. Combat Sense 1 is worth 1 die to your dodge pool, whereas one point in Attribute Boost (AGI)
provides somewhere between 2-7 dice (depending on MAG) to your Punching, Kicking, Throwing, and all other AGI linked skill tests.

Although, Combat Sense doesn't need to be activated to be valuable. You also can't Attribute Boost and punch a fucker in the same initiative pass. You CAN Attribute Boost and Quick Draw a knife.

It's obviously meant to fill the same slot as a helmet. It has roughly the same cost, and has more capacity than a helmet too. My guess is the ballistic mask is more of a full-head mask that is heavy and incompatible with the helmet, much like IRL.

Combining the two also screws with the lore on full helmets, which are meant to cover the entire head but only give +3. Even the hardened milspec battle-armor helmets are only +3. If it was as easy as "helmet+mask lol" to get +4, then the other full helmets would have gotten at least that much too.

Real-world militaries have indeed invented helmets that cover the full head, including the face. In shadowrun rules, such helmets give +3 armor rating.

So, what are the "essential" skills for a rigger? And is it viable to do what Racter did in Hong Kong (that is, focus on a single incredibly souped up drone.)

Thanks in advance for any advice and answers.

Do your runners live together in the same building and have a camaraderie going on, or do they all live in their own apartments/hovels scattered throughout the city and basically treat each other as assets to be tossed off and forgotten at any time?

How souped up is it and what's your GM like? I had a really badass drone that I dumped thousands and thousands of nuyen on and the GM blew it the fuck up.
>>
>>51035191
It depends on the group and their backstory, I have a group of rather new players that are irl very good friends. We play infrequently but I've planted the idea for them to all move in together as a runner team. The only one who will live alone is the guy with the facility level of equipment rigger with a legit SIN. The face may also continue to live on his own due to his family, but that means the sammy, adept, tank, and decker wanna move in and get a nice base of operations set up. I feel it will go interesting especially when they botch a run vs a corp so hard they have KE come down on their turf raid style.

Little bit of column A, Little bit of column B.

The gunslinger basically adopted the technomancer, so they live together. The street sam still live with his ork clan-family when not running, and the elf shaman-face is free to crash at their places whenever she needs it (which doesn't happen too often that she outlasts her welcome.)

Why do the vast majority of fire arms in the books look like absolute garbage? I get that the authors or artists might not be super knowledgeable about guns, but they just look bad. I have two questions on natural healing checks:

1) Are they actually extended tests (i.e. with a cumulative -1 modifier on each roll), or do just they function like one? RAW seems to say the former, but that would mean that your natural healing capabilities taper off into nothing, which doesn't seem right.

2) Do wound modifiers apply to natural healing rolls? Again, RAW seems to imply that they do, saying that they only DON'T apply to resistance checks.

The example on p. 207 seems to say yes to 1) and no to 2), but doesn't provide many details. If you roll poorly, even with medical attention, doesn't that mean that it can become impossible to heal some wounds? ...Until you get wounded again, at which point your healing capabilities return?
>>

>>
>>51037343
>Are they actually extended tests?
Yes they are, with the tiny caveat you cannot really 'fail' them (unless you critglitch). Each hit heals one box of damage.

>Do wound modifiers apply to natural healing rolls?
No they don't.

>If you roll poorly, even with medical attention, doesn't that mean that it can become impossible to heal some wounds?
No, it just means it'll take a longer time for you to recover. Once you are 'finished' with a test, you can keep resting take another. There's no consequence for not healing everything in one roll beyond it taking more of your downtime away.
>>
>>51037599
They're not even that monstrous. They're just GSDs which grow to the size of unusually fat humans. 320lbs - 140 kg - of fire and bark. That's smaller than a pony.
>>
>>51037659

>>
>>51037625

>>
>>51037677
>What're their average lifespans and such?
I haven't seen anything on the matter, so I assume they have a normal lifespan for a large dog - i.e. short.

>Hell are there are actually rules for domesticating these things and keeping 'em around somewhere?
They don't need to be domesticated, they're already dogs. They're bred and trained as corpsec security dogs on the regular, gangs keep them as guard dogs because they're a better choice than shit like rottweilers or pit bulls, and even normal people can have them if they're willing to invest in fireproofing for their home.

I think Howling Shadows has some rules on training animals, though, and a dog that can bark fire hard enough that it does 10P, AP-5 definitely needs some really good training.

>Why do hellhounds have to be german shepards?
Because they're the Awakened version of specifically GSDs. Every breed turns into something different. English Mastiffs, for example, turn into Barghests.

So, an Awakened pug would be something else entirely. Maybe, to the surprise of everyone, they'd turn into some kind of badass, lion-like Temple Dogs, who have natural Astral Combat ability, for guarding places from intrusive spirits and astral projections.

After all, despite being lap dogs in modern times, they've historically had a role in legend as the guard dogs of kings, emperors, and holy sites.

tl;dr the previous dev was unfamiliar with the code base at the time he added it, and the code didn't support FixedValues at the time. Since the powers aren't neatly costed, he split it up into 3 powers. It's already fixed in the databoundpowers branch.
>>51038534

You could do this by scrolling over the power, where it breaks down the power's origin from yourself, Foci, or Mentor Spirit. This isn't super useful in my eyes but since people are requesting it, it must have some merit.

Hey guys, I'm back. I'm still working on exactly how this run is supposed to go, but I've taunted my players enough that they're both excited and nervous. The last run they were on was easy (On my part, I wasn't really good at building mooks), but am being very specific about them NOT being able to do the same thing for this.

At this point, I really don't know how to build things beyond standard. What is a good way to measure how strong an NPC is? I want this to be a challenge, but I don't want to make a guy who eats Anti-tank rounds to the face.
>>
>>51039742
It doesn't really matter how strong an individual is, if the group gets the drop on him he's gone.

If you want a challenge, hit them with 2-3 small groups of decent mooks hitting them from different sides and collaborating.

Right, i'm not looking for 1 or 2 boss characters (Already made that mistake once) But, if I just get standard humans with moderate cyberwear shooting standard guns, I'm pretty sure that I'm not going to be able to even damage the tank of the party.

The idea is using some small unit tactics to take advantages of certain un-common ideas.

Like, get guys with Riot shields that have slits on the top that allow someone from behind to stick their gun through, Phalanx style.

Or using smoke bombs with guys with Ultrasound sensors or thermographic vision.

It's going to be a big raid, I just don't know where the line is between "These guys couldn't hurt anyone if they tried' and "Just one of these groups might be too much of a challenge, much less 6 of them"
