Anybody remember Magic when it first came out? You didn't know what Shivan, Sengir or Serra all meant but it made the world seem deeper with the mystery. I get some of that from KDM.

I remember when the first KDM Kickstarter launched. I couldn't afford it then, but my situation has improved. I have two quick questions before I consider throwing down some cash, though.

Are the newer models, artwork, and gameplay as well-done as they were then? I'm wary of creators that make more only because it continues to sell and get lazy.

And, is there a notable 'best bang for your buck' tier or do they all scale fairly linearly? Any must-haves?

If the Gambler's Chest is anything to go by the newer models are even better than the older ones. Some of this stuff is just amazing.

For value, the Gambler's Chest is shaping up to be a crazy good value. Yes, it's $100, but it's looking to have somewhere around 30 to 35 miniatures in it, one of which is almost certainly a monster to hunt. Unless Poots is trolling us with that #7 box, which could be. But you'll know by the end of the campaign anyways.

It's called an undercut. I don't know if you know this, but it's still a thing, and probably is going to remain thing for a while since the teens who were into that are adults now and are in the job market now, like the entertainment and music industries. Also artists in general who have jobs that let them, nay, ENCOURAGE THEM, to gt whatever stylish/funky haircut they want.

I work in post-production and one of the editors I work with rocks the professional emo style. He's not like rocking some anime hair, but he has some streaks and wears black and a little bit of guyliner.

I assumed he was gay (never discussed or brought up) until he brought his girlfriend to the office holiday party.

I know GC is far from its final form, but for me its geting a bit to uninteresting. Some of the minis sure look amazing, but it could use something diffrent. For rules as someone pointed out, it will be scanned, its only 30 pages. I will stick with gc to the end, but the more survivor miniatures, the more i want to buy some monster expansions instead of gc.

Was a surprisingly good and positive review.

tl;dr version for people who don't want to give them the page views
Kingdom Death is not great, but is frequently good. The emergent storytelling is amazing, but the game is extremely innovative. It lacks many options for terrain and all fights happen on the same board, but that's not a bad thing because every fight is still a learning experience of you trying to learn the monster itself and not just what it does, but how it does it. The game is VERY RNG dependent though, and hunts that should have been a sure thing can easily turn fatal, or (arguably worse) worse you can have too easy a time hunting something which can frequently be a waste of a year. All the fights are interesting and fun... except the level 1 white lion which you fight WAY too many times because everyone has to fight it way too many times and that fight just grows stale. The game is flooded with tits and feels kinda sleazy, but it's very clear that it's an aesthetic it is embracing in full force.

Really, the biggest complaint seemed to be the humor in the game, and how all of it just shows up in times that make it hard to take the horror parts of the game seriously. Also that the game is a MASSIVE time sink, not because of how long the campaign is, but because of how many times you will fail part way through and have to start over.


All in all, surprisingly fair review that ends with "If you are the kind of person that is actually seriously considering dropping nearly half a thousand dollars on a single board game... it is definitely worth that price."

Yes, the female armour does show a little more skin than the male stuff, but it's not egregious or excessive.
Sex isn't used for the sake of having sex in the game.
There is no rape, relationships between 2 people can be with any gender, Intimacy is explicitly listed as being consensual.

The only real sexy miniatures in KD context are the pin-ups, but those aren't included in the game or even a part of it. So what is he on about...

New basic Hunt Event cards need to be handled with care. If you put too many in then you'll see them all the time and never roll on the table. It could easily end up being a detriment to the game, not an improvement. I'm honestly not certain that there is a large design space for them.

I could possibly see if you had a stack of advanced basic hunt events where you shuffle exactly 1 into the 12 "roll on the table" cards then shuffle those 13 cards and put them onto the hunt track. That might work out. But any more and you risk seriously diluting the hunt table in a bad way.

Personally, I think the ideal would be:

2 Basic Hunt Event (Selected randomly)
4 Monster Hunt Events

Change monster specific hunts to use the generic cardback, then shuffle the whole thing and deal it randomly across the board.

The only difference I see between this and 6 generic hunt events + 4 monster hunt events is that this scheme has less variety. I do not see the benefit from a gameplay perspective at all. Those two "basic hunt events" are being pulled from a substantially smaller pool of possible events so you will see them far more often and including them is just going to lower your variety.

Most hunt events instruct the survivors to roll on the hunt event table in addition to their other effects. I think it'd be cool to see new generic hunt event cards (like Percival or Fade's event).

If you have ever played with the tree, or the promos, you would know they are actually pretty damn rare early game. You only move 3 or 4 spaces early game. That is NOT a lot of room for the events to show up. It's not til you start passing Overwhelming Darkness on every hunt that you can reliably trigger cards shuffled into the generic hunts. Before that, there are just too few opportunities.

They need to be more common than just 1 cars shuffled into the generics deck and then possibly not even included in the board at all.

No, they are exactly as common as I am assuming. Once you start hunting L2's you will see three to five of those things almost every time. With that, if you only have one new card in that deck, there is a 1/3 chance each L2+ hunt to encounter that card. With the Lonely Tree I don't mind that, as it only happens once and guarantees that at some point in your campaign you will encounter the Lonely Tree which is necessary to get your money's worth out of the thing.

This is a deck of, at most, 20 cards, given the fact that it should be a small addition to the GC. If we used your '2 basic, 4 generic' schema you would see each individual card 2.5 times as often as any individual table entry. This is what I'm saying when I'm talking about dilution. You're going to see these cards far more often than the table entries, and that's not necessarily a good thing.

I look at it like expanding the hunt event table past the 100 events that it has, which eventually became stale all on their own. I've rolled 00 like 4 times across 5 campaigns.

There are ways that it could go wrong, but I think it'd be fairly easy for Poots to put together some more hunt events for the game without throwing away the table in the process.

The new hunt event cards could be one-time only cards that are removed from the deck when encountered, or they could guarantee a specific event from the hunt table.

Then have the hunt cards have mini tables on them, and those get shuffled together. Keep in mind that the base game will ship next summer and the old expansions towards the end of the year.
It's the new stuff you'll be waiting a lot time for.

The game itself is certainly worth it, however you're going to have to make your own decisions on the expansions.
There is already a lot of content in the Core game, especially with the 1.5 upgrade.

Providing you use sleeves that fit in terms of width (standard MTG sleeves are too wide for the card slots).

The new Forbidden Dance is also fantastic yeah. It's like Scarification -- not something you want to use on established survivors, but something you use on new survivors. 50/50 shot of a permanent bonus or a permanent malus. They're especially good in a Protect the Young settlement where you've been shotgunning babbies to fish for saviors. Lots of fresh meat to shove into that grinder.

Another interesting thing is the heart flute allows you to select the nemesis' level and says to add the encounter to the timeline. This means you can use it fight the Manhunter at a certain level to gain a reward you missed or farm Slenderman

Lore of the setting is intentionally scattered, provided to go with different elements as they're discovered.

The story of the boardgame is that you and a bunch of other people wake up in a land of darkness with just some cloth and lanterns next to you, and you defend yourself from a monsterous lion with but your fists and a shard of the stone-face covered floor.

After that encounter, the survivors find a horde of lanterns and begin their settlement there. From there, it is all about surviving as long as possible by hunting the monsters for food annd resource, developing your community, and enduring the horrors that come to reap lives of your settlement for their own reasons.

A lot of push to get that fighting art S.S. I believe it would have been better to have made it a tactic card, ala from the knights, and allow bonuses to those types of cards. Their randomness makes most of them non-relevant in showdowns.
While I'm saying that Synchronized Strike is great, that you get this fighting art from Drums. But, I disagree that it is a fighting art card. It should be a tactic card. Then, there should be more support for TACTIC Cards.
Like all other Tactic cards they place importance on WHERE your survivors are in the showdown phase. Where Fighting arts are what the solo survivor can bring to the showdown that have no bearing on the others.

Does the Antelope change make it not the piñata beast we enjoyed? If so... this is going to change a lot of things.

Ancient Gold Lantern here, when I calculated the retail cost of current expansions it was an amazing deal but now all the expansions are starting to become available at discount the deal is not quite as good. besides the now locked pledges the Ancient Gold seems to be the one of best value and the earliest delivery times.
