battle-modder-river-map.jpg

It is 117 years since the Battle of Modder River (known in Afrikaans as Slag van die Twee Riviere), an engagement in the Second Boer War of 1899-1902. A British column under Lord Methuen, which was attempting to relieve the besieged town of Kimberley, forced Boers under General Piet Cronje to retreat to Magersfontein; but suffered heavy casualties themselves. It was a rough introduction for British forces to the new style of warfare on the veldt.

When the war broke out the previous month, one of the Boers' early targets was the diamond-mining centre of Kimberley, which stood not far from where the borders of the Boer Republics and the British-controlled Cape Colony met. Although their forces surrounded the town, they did not press home any immediate assault, nor did they attempt to invade Cape Colony.

Meanwhile, British reinforcements were on their way to South Africa. Their commander, General Sir Redvers Buller detached the 1st Division under Lieutenant General Lord Methuen to relieve the Siege of Kimberley. This decision was made partly for reasons of prestige, as the capture of Kimberley would be a major propaganda victory for the British. Methuen's force advanced north along the Western Cape Railway.

The Boers had been reinforced by a contingent from the Transvaal under General Koos de la Rey, who proposed a radical new plan of defence. He pointed out that the Boers had previously been easily driven from the kopjes (hills) which they had occupied. The kopjes had been obvious aiming marks for the numerically superior British artillery. Also, the trajectory of rifle fire from Boers on the top of the kopjes was steeply plunging. It therefore had a chance of hitting its target only in the last six feet or so of its flight. Once British infantry had reached the foot of the kopje, they were concealed by boulders and scrub, and could then easily drive the Boers off the summit with the bayonet.
>>
>>50426870
De la Rey proposed to make use of the flat trajectory of the Mauser rifle with which the Boers were armed, together with the flat veld. He called on his men to dig trenches in the banks of the Modder River, from which their rifles could sweep the veld for a great distance, and won them over. General Piet Cronje, who arrived later with the main Boer force, acquiesced in this novel plan.

The area contained two prominent hotels and the village of Rosmead, which was used as a resort by prominent businessmen from Kimberley. The Boer trenches were on the south side of the Modder and the smaller Riet River which joined it at Modder River Station. The Boers had six field guns and one Maxim "pom-pom" (small rapid-firing gun) from the Orange Free State's Staatsartillerie. They deployed these not as a concentrated battery, but as widely separated individual gun detachments north of the Modder and to the east. They had dug several emplacements for each gun, allowing their guns to switch position to avoid counter-battery fire.

Methuen's force consisted of two infantry brigades (the Guards Brigade under Major-General Sir Henry Edward Colville and the 9th Brigade under Major-General Reginald Pole-Carew), two mounted regiments, three batteries of field artillery and four guns of the Naval Brigade. Further reinforcements were arriving up the railway.

The British cavalry (the 9th Lancers and a unit recruited in Cape Town, Rimington's Guides), made some attempts to scout the ground ahead of the army, but failed entirely to detect De la Rey's trenches and other preparations. (For example, the Boers had whitewashed stones on the veld or had placed biscuit tins as range markers). At 4:30 am on 28 November, Methuen's force roused itself, deployed into line and began advancing towards the Modder, with no plans other than to cross the river before having breakfast on the far side.
>>
>>50426886
As the British troops came within 1,200 yards (1,100 m) of the river, Methuen remarked to Colville, "They're not here." Colville replied, "They're sitting uncommonly tight if they are". At this point the Boers opened fire. Most of the British troops were forced to throw themselves flat. Some tried to advance in short rushes, but could find no cover on the veld. Few British troops got closer than 1,000 yards (910 m) to the Boers. The Guards tried to outflank the Boer left, but were unable to ford the Riet River. The British guns pounded the buildings near Modder River Station and the line of poplar trees which marked the north bank of the Modder, and entirely missed the enemy trenches on the south bank. Meanwhile, the Boer guns maintained a galling fire, and kept in action by repeatedly moving their positions.

The battle became a day-long stalemate. Most of the British infantry lay prone on the veld, tortured by heat and thirst, but safe from enemy fire unless they moved. Many stoically smoked pipes or even slept. Methuen galloped about the field trying to renew the advance, and was himself wounded. At midday, some of Pole-Carew's 9th Brigade found the open Boer right flank at Rosmead Ford downstream. British infantry infiltrated across the ford and about 1:00 pm drove the Boers out. The attack was disjointed, and suffered casualties when a British field artillery battery which had just arrived on the field shelled them by mistake. By nightfall, De la Rey had driven them back into a small insecure bridgehead. Nevertheless, the Boers feared that they were now vulnerable to being outflanked, and withdrew during the night.

The British lost between 450 and 480 and were forced to pause for ten days. On the Boer side, there were about 80 casualties, including Adriaan, the eldest son of de la Rey, mortally wounded by a shell.

The Second Boer War has a lot of potential for wargaming, with high mobility and dramatic changes in general strategy. A Boer player has few troops but intense lethality, while the British player has the numbers but lacks the co-ordination to use them fully. Featherstone (ever the Victorian wars buff) wrote a chapter on the subject - pdf related - which contains a specific scenario of Modder River.

Iraqi Forces for Op Mor.jpg
270KB, 798x382px
It is 36 years since Operation Morvarid (Persian for "Pearl"), an operation launched by the Iranian Navy and Air Force against the Iraqi Air Defence sites on 28 November 1980 in response to Iraq positioning radar and monitoring equipment on the Al-Bakr and Khor-al-Amaya oil rigs to counter Iranian air operations. The operation resulted in a victory for Iran, which managed to destroy both oil rigs as well as much of the Iraqi Navy and inflicted significant damage to Iraqi ports and airfields.

On 28 November 1980, Iranian F-4 Phantoms and F-5 Tiger IIs attacked Iraqi airfields around Basra. They managed to destroy one Iraqi MiG-21 Fishbed on the ground. During the night of the 29th, six ships of the Iranian Navy's Task Force 421 deployed marines on the Iraqi oil terminals at Mina al Bakr and Khor-al-Amaya. The marines, supported by Army Aviation's AH-1J Cobras, Bell 214s and CH-47C Chinooks, gunned down most Iraqi defenders during a short firefight, then deployed a large number of bombs and mines. They were then evacuated by helicopter and left the Iraqi oil installations and early warning bases in flames.

At the same time, two Iranian Kaman class missile boats (Paykan and Joshan) blocked the ports of Al Faw and Umm Qasr, blocking 60 foreign ships and shelling both facilities. In response the Iraqi Navy deployed P-6 torpedo boats and Osa II class fast-attack craft for a counter-attack. The boats engaged the two Iranian missile boats which managed to sink two Osas with Harpoon missiles. The remaining three Osa class missile boats continued to attack the missile boat Paykan. The crew of the "Paykan" called IRIAF for help which sent two F-4s (each armed with six AGM-65 Maverick missiles). By the time they arrived, however, the Paykan had been sunk after being hit by two Iraqi P-15 Termit missiles. In response, the F-4s targeted the remaining Iraqi ships and sunk three Osa IIs and four P-6s.
>>
>>50426936
Soon another four Iranian F-4s arrived from Shiraz Air Base, bombed the port of Al Faw, and, together with F-5s, destroyed the surrounding Iraqi SAM sites. One Iranian F-4 was hit by an Iraqi SA-7 surface-to-air missile but managed to return to base.

Now Iranian F-14 Tomcat formations joined the battle and, together with several F-4s, covered the withdrawal of Task Force 421 and bombed the Iraqi oil rigs, destroying an Iraqi Aérospatiale Super Frelon helicopter. After this, they attacked the Mina al Bakr terminal. The Iraqis scrambled seven MiG-23 Floggers to defend the terminal. Iranian F-4s then engaged the Iraqi MiG-23MSs and downed three. One Iranian F-4 was downed during the battle. Four Iraqi MiG-23BNs attacked the Joshan, which managed to shoot two down with SA-7 missiles. Shortly after, an Iranian F-14 downed one of the two surviving MiGs, forcing the last one to flee.

The destruction of Iraqi SAM sites and radar and monitoring equipment made it possible for the IRIAF to attack via southern Iraq again. The Iranian missile boat Joshan which took part in this operation was later sunk during Operation Praying Mantis by U.S. Navy warships.

Finnish Soldier vs Soviet Soldier: Winter War 1939-1940 (Osprey Combat 21 )

The Winter War was supposed to be a quick and easy conflict; instead it proved to be a bitter war that destroyed the international reputation of the Soviet Red Army. The diminutive Finnish force was desperately outnumbered by almost half a million Russian troops, but rather than sweeping across their neighbours the Soviet troops stumbled blindly, constantly wrong-footed and then bloodied by their seemingly insignificant foe. Drawing on a wide range of sources this study looks at three key battles, drawing a stark contrast between the poorly prepared Russian troops and the Finns, who made excellent use of terrain and innovative guerrilla tactics as they defended their homeland. Detailed maps and specially commissioned artwork highlight key moments in the Winter War, a David-and-Goliath conflict that saw the Soviet Union suffer horrendous losses as they tried to recover from each disastrous defeat.

Hey thanks for taking the time to write up a historical summary every thread. It would be easy to just post the link library but you go above and beyond picking out a conflict and doing a write up about it
>>

Gonna need some more detail...what's your most interesting time period/conflict? Are you interested in a skirimish with 30 or so guys per side or do you want to command a tank division?

Tell us what your ideal thing would be and someone here can probably reccomaned a game for it.

Very cool blog about a guy converting a bunch of soviet cavalry in 28mm for use with Chain of Command. he invents his own cavalry rules and playtests them, and makes some really great minis (and nicely painted too) some battle reports and lessons learned, as well as the conversion process. Very cool!

Stumbled across it researching cossack uniforms and equipment in WW2 - just got a box of 1/72 Revell cossacks and I was wondering if the cloaks are a bit much... None of the photos I can find of cossacks in ww2 feature cloaks

Zama 202 BC: Scipio Crushes Hannibal in North Africa (Osprey Campaign 299)

The battle of Zama, fought across North Africa around 202 BC, was the final large-scale clash of arms between the world's two greatest western powers of the time - Carthage and Rome. The engagement ended the Second Punic War, waged from 218 until 201 BC. The armies were led by two of the most famous commanders of all time - the legendary Carthaginian general Hannibal, renowned for crossing the Alps with his army into Italy, and the Roman general Publius Cornelius Scipio, who along with his father was among the defeated at the battle of Cannae in 216 BC.

Hex & counter is pretty well suited to that, you find a lot of operational-level games there. The Strategy & Tactics folder would probably be a good start; browse the titles to see if any stand out for you. There's good stuff in the Avalon Hill/SPI folders too, and although 1980s/WW3 is later than you mentioned, GDW's Third World War is a great game at this scale.

Miniatures-wise you want to buy a whole bunch of 6mm and find a good ruleset!

It's based on volume and quality of material. The biggest draw of shapeways is finding things that other people don't make, particularly in the scale you're looking at. Quality of sculpts also varies wildly by designer, so there's that too.

First you have to talk about Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a day the United States celebrates in order to remember the Native americans sharing with them, and teaching them about the 3 sisters (Beans, corn and squash or something).
To celebrate this they each eat 2 Turkeys, 4 Yams, a pound of sweet potatoes 3 pounds of mashed potato and 1 and a half Pecan Pies. After this, unable to move, the American male starts watching American football on his 46" TV. Tom Brady's butt looks great on this 46" TV but he cannot shake the feeling that it would look even better on Steve from down the road's 48" TV. This feeling grows throughout the 8 hours it takes to watch an NFL game, and after all his wife keeps telling him how much difference 2" makes. He voices the idea of getting a 48" TV, which his wife agrees with; after all Steve from down the road's wife is always trying to prove how much better and wealthier and happier they are, which they aren't. At least they wouldn't be if they had a 48" TV.

So the next day when their bodies are finally metabolising the 12,500 calories they ate the previous day they are filled with energy and wake at 3am in order to go shopping. At the shop there are about 50 people after each 48" television so some savvy marketing director somewhere halved the price and give it to whomever survives the melee in their shop.

Being successful the American family sits at home thinking about how glum Steve from down the road will be when they find out that they too have a 48" TV. This feeling will dissipate when they next see Steve from down the road and his wife and discover that on black friday they in fact bought a 50" TV and Tom Brady's ass does in fact look incredible on it.

Thinking this was a great idea for selling wargames models, various companies (Europeans who just don't get how important the 3 sisters were to watching TV) slapped about 15% off of shit resin tank sculpts that no one buys as well as free shipping and called it a day.

Impetus in summary:
It's one of those wargames that covers a wide era of history in a way that lets you match up whatever you want, more or less. There's points costs and a focus on tight rules but it manages to do this without becoming too dry or lacking in historical 'flavour' appropriate to each army. The rules are concise and well supported with supplements, including one specifically for fighting a not-War of the Roses campaign. It's not because it's not a a set of purely historical refights, but a system for generating your own.

System-wise the rules are pretty simple, with a few stats and using D6s for rolls. The turn system alternates between the players but with the twist of each side having to nominate the commander they're trying to activate and seeing if they get to first, so that armies with better commanders have a possible advantage in initiative. The game treats units as a whole, there's no individual casualty removal and units suffer from disruption and loss of fighting capability as they take damage. You probably won't be destroying units outright with just shooting in the game. It's designed to play fast, a good battle taking somewhere between an hour and 2 hours depending on the size. Base sizes don't matter too much as long as you're using the same kind of frontage for units on each side.

Overall, it's definitely one of the better examples of game design out there; not overly cluttered, well organised and with a clear intent behind the system and the aspects of warfare it focuses on, and despite covering a wide timescale, doesn't feel too generic in how things operate, and does so without ladling on special rules for everything. There's also a free version called Basic Impetus that compresses the rules right down, cuts out a lot of depth (especially in army construction), but is also good in it's own way. Either way, it's in the OP download folders: https://www.mediafire.com/folder/28i9gevqws518/Impetus

Just played my first naval game with the WW2 rules that get talked about here.

Both sides approaching, the North Carolina and it DD escorts make a 90 degree turn to open up the full battery of the North carolina while the Scharnhorst and Bulcher tried to close the distance. NC get the ranged shot, and rapid fires into the Scharnhorst. Get 7 hits with the 16 inch guns.

The Scharnhorst is dead in the water, Bulcher and DD tried to lay smoke, DD is promptly sunk by the North Carolina. Germans leave the battle, and the Scharnhorst is sunk as it is a inmobile burning wreck.

Bad day for the German fleet.
>>
>>50438583

Is that all in just one turn? That does not seem right really, I don't think the main guns of the NC have the Rapid Fire rule, and once you have ranged in you cannot shoot again in the same turn since that would be a second attack activation?
>>
>>50438779
No, not in one turn. That was me summing up about 5 turns of combat.

Rapid fire = the firing for full effect once it ranged, might of used wrong term.

Round 1 - both sides steam to each other. Out of range.
Round 2 - in range, US fleet makes a 90 degrees to Port. Both sides trying to range in.
Round 3 - Still ranging in, Germans closings
Round 4 - USS North Carolina gets range. can fire for full effect.
Round 5 - Scharnhorst gets Rekted by lucky rolls.
Round 6 - German DDs try to make smoke screen, DD hit and sunk.
Round 7 - German fleet flees, US fleet does not give chase.
>>
>>50438126
I especially like it for covering Sengoku Japan post-Tanegashima, unlike a lot of similar wargames which usually stop at covering Japan right before they get firearms.
>>
>>50438881
Yeah, Rapid Fire is a rule that most all guns below 6" have that allows them to fire at full ROF without ranging in, and also do so in the indirect activations phase. That's where >>50438779 the confusion is coming from.
>>
>>50438881

Here's the slight problem in having just battleships and a few destroyers: once that BB is gone, their side is in serious trouble.

For testing the rules it is indeed easier to just go with a big ship to get a feeling for the rules mechanics.

>>
>>50439099

I'd do the matchup again if I were you, and this time try different tactics on the Scharnhorst

- Scharnhorst has a 20cm range advantage, so start the fight using that together with the 'Stroke of luck" order to increase your chances to range in. Then once ranged in use the "Fatal hit" order to increase the puny damage of those 11" guns.
- Once NC closes the range, change tactics and charge him head on using 'flank speed' and either 'evasive action' or 'breakout' (preferable) to mitigate damage while trying to get into torpedo range with the DD's and the BB while Scharnhorst tanks the damage and kills the escorting DD's.

That should give him a fighting chance, although it will still be an uphill battle trying to defeat 16" guns with a 11" gunned BB :)
>>
>>50439561
Will be the first to say the Scharnhorst was REALLY unlucky. Getting hit by Six plus sixteen inch shells in one volley is going to be a bad day no matter the ship.

The Original German plan was to close in, and hae the Blucher and DD engage the American DDs, while the Scharnhorst fought the NC, then once the DD was gone, have the Blucher join in and have the DDs go in for torpedo runs.

Might have to try your tactics again sometime. Also might try teaching one of my buddies to play it so we can run a game.
>>
>>50428564
I agree, I really enjoyed this one and am going to look up more about this conflict. Don't know much about this conflict
>>
>>50439495
And Scharnhorst was amusingly lost in a surface action not that dissimilar to this one, except the battle was against the 14'' gunned HMS Duke of York, and the Scharnhorst lasted a lot longer, being finished off by torpedoes from the Duke of York's escorting DDs after taking a mauling from the British battleship's guns.
>>
>>50439676
"Getting hit by Six plus sixteen inch shells in one volley is going to be a bad day no matter the ship."

Doesn't NC have a total broadside of RoF 6 in the game (Rof 4 front, Rof 2 Rear)? How can he be hit 6+ times in one volley?

Impetus has a flow and interaction somewhat similar to DBM, but you will be rolling 5-10 dice instead of a single die (which I enjoy). There is quite a bit more depth to unit variation than DBM (even with Basic Impetus).

I think it's great for folks familiar with DBM or DBA. You can stick a couple of DBM bases together (or just use them as is) to have an Impetus unit.

I usually play on a small (70x120 cm table) with 60mm wide bases and it gives a good game on that with Basic or 400 points.

Unless you hate rolling a bunch of dice, you should like it. Check out Basic Impetus, it's free and you'll see for yourself if it is to your taste.
>>
>>50440821
No problem - in that case, as a note, the Scharnhorst was still afloat at the end of the session, just that it was dead in the water, on fire, and the rest of the German fleet was fleeing, so it was adjudicated as it was going to be sunk, I did not spend the time putting the final rounds in as it was a test game.

As said, it was a very lucky volley with all 16 inch guns hitting home.

Also, I will also reserve the right to admit I did something wrong, as I am learning the rules still. I might run the same one again and keep a log for the designer.

TLDR : collect your own figs and learn the rules, meet people and play demo games with friends.

Find some buddies and see if they'd be interested, make some friends at hobby stores, and introduce them to whatever system you're interested in, recently got a few buddies of mine into Bolt Action since they like history.

Also introducing people from a local store into a few different historical system.

Honestly, just start collecting, get a collection going, most people I get in are just from, giving them a display- demo type game with all my figures, kinda capture their imagination.

You cant underestimate what a nice board and fully painted armies can do.

Made some pretty good progress on Westfront over the past few days, finished off the infantry and cover / trenches / fortification rules. Provides rules for shallow and deep trenches, pillboxes and dugouts.
Also implemented a nice suppression / morale system, whereby units can become wavering, and broken. I read a lot about how units were forced back in retreat rather than completely wiped out a lot of the time, so felt it was important to represent that. The suppression system is similar to Ikonki where suppression is part of the damage inflicted on infantry and so doesn't require any extra rolls, and means you can force peoples heads down with artillery and machine gun fire.

Also ordered a bunch of WW1 germans (all 1/72): 2 boxes of Hät German artillery (7.7cm feldkanone and MG08s), 1 box of Caesar WW1 german army (with mid war stahlhelm and covered in grenades) and a box of Strelets German infantry with gasmasks - 48 of them. These late war and gas mask guys will be perfect for assault infantry, as they tended to get the new equipment first, so its perfectly fine for them to have Stahlhelm while the regulars are still in pickelhaube (of which I have 2 boxes of airfix minis) - it will represent a roughly 1916 army.

Looking forward to painting the gas mask guys, such a typically WW1 look and spooky as fuck
Strelets make gas mask infantry for most of the factions involved, which is pretty cool. Although they're strelets and small details aren't their forte - things tend to be accentuated and slightly cartoonish.

Operation Market-Garden 1944 (2): The British Airborne Missions (Osprey Campaign 301)

With Germany being pushed back across Europe the Allied forces looked to press their advantage with Operation Market-Garden, a massive airborne assault that, if successful, could have shortened the war in the west considerably. The ground advance consisted of an armoured thrust by the British XXX Corps, while the US 82nd and 101st US Airborne Divisions secured the bridges at Eindhoven and Nijmegen and the British 1st Airborne Division and Polish 1st Airborne Brigade were tasked with seizing the final bridge at Arnhem to secure the route. What they did not realise was that the 9. SS and 10. SS-Panzer Divisions were nearby, ready to reinforce the local garrison and fend off the Allied assault.

Just read through several rulesets to get a feel for them, try to play test games before deciding on one, maybe blutac your dudes to their bases for the test games so you aren't committed to one basing system.

I still haven't settled on an ancients system, which is part of why I'm using magnetized individual basing for my dudes. That way I can rearrange them on 4/6-man bases, depending on the system I use, or even do individual casualty removal in WAB/WAC, if need be.

At a rough guess: should be ready, balanced and playable by the start of next year.
I'm about 1/3 of the way through writing the rules out (although I have all the ideas written out - just a matter of wording them nicely)
Then its a matter of playtesting.
I have all the army lists done, and I will include an aside for early war Russians (who effectively sucked all around - almost no recon, reinforcements took forever to arrive, if at all, artillery often withdrew before the infantry was finished fighting, etc.)

Just been putting together some blast templates so I can include printable smoke/crater markers - they're double sided so the first turn your artillery hits a point you place the smoke (and inflict damage on anything underneath) and then the next turn you flip the marker over and it becomes a permanent crater on the battlefield. The smoke provides cover, and that way you can use creeping artillery barrages just like they were used in real life.

That would have been fun to watch, as that would have been a true simulation type game.

Eh, you say that, but a lot of professional wargaming leans more towards matrix games than Matrix Games - experienced refs, rather than spreadsheets and number-crunching.

A while ago i ordered a single blister from offensive miniatures. I never ordered from them, but the minis looked nice and i wanted to see and try them.
I was not disappointed.

Pic related is what i got, in comparison to one of Warlord Games Winter Grenadiers straight ouf of the blister too. (far right, with the red line).

There is next to no flash on the offensive minis (note the small amount right next to the cardboard back of the blister) and the sculpts look very good with lots of detail. Only a very small mold line runs across the sides of the minis.

The only "bad" thing about them is that the blister came without the typical blister foam. The minis have been inside a little zip bag instead.

Overall a very pleasant surprise.

>>

They are thinner and their weapons are a bit more realistic in their size.

I was also impressed that nothing was bent. Note that flamethrower guy in the top row? The barrel was perfectly straight right out the blister. With my recently purchased Warlord minis i always had bent barrels and panzerfausts.

So in the US, a building is potentially eligible for the National Register of Historic Places if it is at just at least 50 years old. Not long ago I had the pleasure of doing a historic eligibility evaluation on this thing:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southdale_Center

(it's not eligible, too many renovations. But other buildings of the same era have the potential to be listed for preservation).

the plastic box adds a bit of stability and if the worst happens, stops broken bits falling out.

The Tamiya kit has a small gap for the box to "slot in" so its on its supposed position.
It also has a little bit that rests on the back of the tank so its stabilized.

I took a better pic.

Either Bretagne or Provence post refits. Don't remember which it was actually supposed to be. It's not Loirraine though, because it would have a catapult where the Q turret is.

Latest version of Fear Naught! Got the two starter scenarios nailed down, added a guide for creating your own ships, added gunboats, monitors, submarines and coastal batteries.

Since I've been playing a fucktonne of Dishonoured, I'm also thinking about going back to the Chevauchee fantasy supplement and throwing some assassin-y type scenarios together.

So 2017 is soon upon us and with it, the WW1 centenary continues. Next year will mark a century since the Russian Revolutions, American intervention, Passchendale, Bloody April, the French Army mutinies, the Palestine Campaign - there will be a lot to remember.

And yet manufacturers still don't really give a crap about it...

Fuck you Airfix and fuck you Zvezda for promising awesome new sets and then not delivering shit.

Gotta shit out more WW2 models.

Looking forward to catching up week by week on The Great War channel.
I learned a lot about the Russian revolution in Norman Stone's book "the eastern front 1914 - 1917". very interesting read (although I listened as an audiobook from audible)

There have been quite a few kits over the years, but I agree, many things missing or not in production. I was surprised to hear anon from above say that A7Vs are relatively hard to find in 1/72.
http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/PeriodList.aspx?period=11

The kallistra minis are pretty nice too and they have a pretty decent range, although they dont do armor yet...

>>
>>50494452
I meant it more as "nothing really interesting for the anniversary". Airfix promised new kits for both the Brits and Germans, Zvezda promised a game with infantry, machine guns, artillery...yet nothing. HaT didn't really release any WW1 sets lately either.

For the A7V, I'll try and ask Laser Cut Card if they have any plans doing it, they made a Mk IV in 28mm (that they can make in 1:72 as well), so I guess there could be one of those too, as it's not a particularly complicated design either.

Also: HaT made a late war British heavy weapons set, but no standard infantry. Same goes for their WW2 stuffs, both a mortar and a machine gun set, but no standard infantry. Fuck if I understand why they don't like finishing their ranges before starting a new one.

Question: How to identify the infantry shown in this picture?
Answer: The badge on their lapel of course, which in this case is the distinctive sunburst of the Australians.
>>
>>50494530
I don't really have hopes about them...I have that kit as well, I really like the sculpts, I can make an entire Sturmplatoon out of them.

What I'd love to see from them is some kits for 'nam. Pegasus made a really nice USMC kit, but only the Esci kit is around for the Vietnamese, and some poses from the Specnaz kit that also can be useful. Pegasus has no plans on expanding the range (or any of their ranges, basically), Caesar does only WW2 Germans most of the time (4 out of 6 sets were Krauts in their last release)...maybe Mars will downscale their 1:32 figures (they made a really nice set of Viet-cong and US infantry), but I digress. I have the HaT Aussies I plan to paint up for Europe, as even tho all of them are in their traditional hats and not helmets, there were accounts of them utilizing those instead of the helmets in Europe.
>>
>>50494573
Yeah i remember in "now it can be told" the tommy always remarked you could tell the Aussies by their slouched hats (and this was in europe). I guess up until 1916 everyone was wearing hats and not helmets
>>
>>50494661
Well it did take some time for everyone to realise that its perhaps not the best idea to fight a modern war wearing soft hats, on account of all the shrapnel.

By the end of 1916 it would have been relatively rare to see soft headwear on the battlefield, but it wasn't unknown. Pic related is some Aussies on the Sonme, Devember 1916; they're on fatigue duty so they could break out some very battered looking hats.

The fact everyone had to wear helmets let to efforts by Dominion forces to other ways to distinguish themselves from each other, because normally it was the hat that identified them. In WW2 this was solved with black shoulder tabs showing the wearer's nationality. But in WW1 I can imagine Anzac troops trying to assert a little identity when they could.

If you do, do yourselves a favour and buy the HaT British infantry as well. Italeri for some reasong gutted the Esci British Colonial kit and left out most of the basic posed minis - instead of the 5 standing and shooting ones, you get like...2 or 3. While the pretty useless ones, like the casualty, the ammo box bearer, prone figures, you get the same amount as in the Esci box.

Looking a lot better so far anon, just by glancing at it. I wish I had to actually give it a playtest to give you some more useful feedback.

I've been thinking hard about picking up some Topside stuff as cheap way to branch out into dreadnaught era stuff, and I'm gonna be getting a coupon soon. Might just have to pick some up and go from there if I get the time.

I'm pretty excited about the thought of assassin type stuff using Chevauchee. I had already been thinking about trying to run a game sometime using my Kossites from Warmachine (since they could pass as slightly more generic fantasy) but my Kayazy as a gang of assassins similar to Daud's sounds even better.

How do you guys usually run your games?

Balanced battles based on points with little to no context?

Heavily researched and historically themed battles?
>>
>>50509005
for casual games usually points limit, no specific historical context beyond avoiding dumb match ups like one faction fighting itself.

And then we research specific battles and attempt to re-fight them, but using a simplified versions of the scenario and exact forces involved. So for example if a German panzer division is attacking a Russian city, the panzer division doesn't have to have the exact units it would have historically, but instead can have a rough ratio of the kinds of forces a panzer division would have had available at that time and in that theater.

I have done a couple of historical battles with exact numbers (usually halving the irl numbers to get workable tabletop numbers) but often these battles were won or lost in the strategic area, rather than the tactical tabletop area, so they become rather one sided.
One we did involved Russian T-34s navigating by compass in a snowstorm, and emerging out of the blizzard directly in front of under-supplied Romanian trenches, and annihilating everything in their path. The Romanians just had to hold on as long as possible... This was part of operation Uranus iirc
>>
>>50505163
Use Ba2 rules with old army books. Only the Germans have a new army book
>>
Do you have historical compositions of the Soviet divisions/regiment/battalions/companies/platoons? I've recently got a manual for the Cold War and I wonder how different was organisation during the WW2. Organisation of other armies are also welcomed. Also, I'd like to know more about tactics and strategies of the time.

weapons and tactics of the Italian Wars. What cities were the most important in the age by population, economy or military importance. Possibly how well-fortified each city was.

I'm trying to put together a hexmap of the peninsula, dated 1500, so I'm mostly interested in info on the cities for now. Population data for the era is hard to find.

There's a few pages here on that subject, not a lot of info but it will give you a start:

http://www.mediafire.com/file/j65ut9zod96wydq/Renaissance+Armies+1480-1650.pdf

All the relevant Ospreys seem to end around 1500, although the title on Condottiere might appeal. Also the Campaign on Pavia could help.

http://www.mediafire.com/file/wdxmcsw2zui2jhq/Osprey+-+WAR+115+-+Condottiere+1300-1500.pdf
http://www.mediafire.com/file/umsqva0h67u42cp/Osprey+-+CAM+044+-+Pavia+1525.pdf

It might also help to look at Town; even though it was written for Medieval gaming, it will give you a good idea of where a Renaissance city is coming from.

http://www.mediafire.com/file/d4hp6vj8mn9ajed/Town+-+A+City+Dweller%27s+Look+At+13th-15th+Century+Europe.pdf

Lastly you could look at the sourcebooks for DBR and Impetus, and check out the Italian Wars lists they have. They might provide some inspiration.

This is where you have to go down to your local library and dig up some weighty tomes. Specific raw data like you are after would be spread across a number of sources. A lot of times you're just going to have to make some arbitrary decisions and leave it there. For example I doubt you'll find solid population figures, so you may need to abstract things.

Read up about the new german special rules, they are the only major change for the Germans anyway. A couple of rare units got their point cost changed (like Elefant tank destroyer costs now around 5 points less and other irrelevant stuff like this).

Important:

Hitlers Buzzsaw: Affects now lmg and mmg alike (also vehicle mmgs too)

Blitzkrieg: German Officers can use the "snap to action" on +1 units. So 2nd LT activates 2 instead of 1 unit, 1st LT 3 instead of 2 etc

Initiative Training: If the NCO dies he will be replaced by a regular soldier if you roll an 2+ (instead of 4+ like it was before)

Tiger Fear: Anything with that rule (i.e. Pz4 with long barrel, Tiger, King Tiger, Panther and Jagdpanther and Jagdtiger) cause 1 Pin to every enemy unit with line of sight to the "Tiger" unless the unit shoots at it.
