>So, all those races are AL legal. Yes, even yuan-ti. How does it make you feel?
Pretty bad senpai. Yuan-ti made it to print in that state (remember the bitching about Chainlocks?) and yet Kobolds suck (pack tactics only barely makes up for their disadvantages IMO).

Furry Scumbucket

No. You can choose which way to calculate AC you want to use at any point (so you could swap between them) but you cannot stack them.

They get spell resistance which is a HUGE deal. Advantage on every saving throw against a spell or spell like effect for your character's entire career? That's incredibly strong. On top of that they get an immunity to the second most common damage type in the game and a very powerful 1/day spell.

A lizardman barbarian or monk can use either their natural armor or unarmored defense to calculate AC.

A barbarian/monk doesn't get to choose which unarmored defense to use, you explicitly do not learn the unarmored defense from the second class you would get it from.

Rogue and paldain both work, because they benefit greatly from pack tactics. Go dex paladin, of course.

I’m creating a special item for one of my players. The idea behind it is that it’s supposed to inflict great amounts of pain but let’s them gain some form of insight. I’ve been coming up with some ideas and here are the once that seemed the most reasonable.
1. Roll 1dX + character level (was thinking 1d4) damage and then I roll on a 1d20 on a table of “how well it went”
2. Roll 1d20 CON save. If you fain you take 1dX + level damage. Regardless of success I roll on a d20 table
3. Roll 1d20 CON save. If you fain you take 1dX + level damage and gain no insight. If you succeed take 1dY (less than if you failed) + level and I roll 1d20.

I could mix these a bit but you get the idea. Any thoughts? Is it a good/bad idea? What should I change?

I'd suggest both the "Underdark" sourcebook for 3e, FRCS3e, and Faiths and Pantheons. Then look at the 2e religion books if you're looking for more info on any particular religion.

You'll want the drow pantheon for drow, obviously, but the other underdark races wouldn't worship the drow gods.

5 levels barbarian
6 levels monk
2 levels rogue
Take boots of speed as my starting magic item.

30 - Base speed
40 - Fast Movement
55 - Elk totem barbarian (while raging)
70 - Monk's unarmoured movement
80 - Mobile feat
160 - Friendly wizard casts haste
320 - Feline agility
640 - Boots of Speed
1280 - Dash as a standard action
2560 - Dash as a cunning action
5120 - Dash action from haste

Never fast enough. NEVER FAST ENOUGH.

>>50086986
Might be overpowered at lower levels, but the concept of Kenku Wereravens is pretty interesting, especially considering their lore.

Maybe when a Kenku are immune to lycanthropy normally, however if they contact from a wereraven through say, a blood transfusion or something, then it manifests itself differently. They are unable to spread lycanthropy through bites, and they do not have normal lycanthrope immunities. Because crows are so similar and closely related to ravens, kenku wereravens do not gain the "hybrid form". Instead, they essentially gain the hybrid form as their true form, as they are already so similar. So basically they go from being crow people to raven people. They can still turn into a raven and shit.
>>

Lizardfolk are one of the more populous Demi-Human demographics in the Al-Qadim setting / Zakhara. Play one as a Far Traveler, and you could conceivably play them as either a follower of the Zakharan pantheon or from whatever that city was w/ a high northern barbarian population and having picked up a faith from there instead. Such a Lizardfolk would also, presumably, be better at mimicry of emotions what with living close to other demi-humans.

No, no they can't. Maybe your DM lets them because your DM is bad, but if one of their spells has a somatic component, they need a free hand to cast it. They're allowed to wear holy symbols rather than hold them in hand, but that's it.

>Also this has nothing to do with subjective as fuck logic but with balance, why ones can use shiel with ranged attacks and others don't?

You are everything that's wrong with roleplaying. You see the game only as a collection of rules and don't think for a moment about what those rules represent.

extra 5' because of bugbear racial, ontop of the whips' reach
>>
>>50087802
Whips are reach weapons
Bugbears have an extra 5 foot reach
This means a bugbear can be whipping you from 15 feet away. 20 if they're also a Battlemaster with Lunging Strike
You could pull all of this off with a polearm, but bugbears also have Stealth proficiency and do an extra 2d6 damage on surprise rounds, making them excellent Rogues. Rogues need a finesse weapon to sneak attack with, which whips are.

So a Rogue/Fighter Bugbear can whip you to death from 20 feet in the shadows

A holy symbol is a spellcasting focus. It replaces material components, not somatic ones. If you hold it in your hand you can perform somatic components with the same hand, but if you don't hold it in your hand you still need a hand free for the somatic component. >A character can use a component pouch or a spellcasting focus (found in chapter 5) in place of the components specified for a spell. But if a cost is indicated for a component, a character must have that specific component before he or she can cast the spell. If a spell states that a material component is consumed by the spell, the caster must provide this component for each casting of the spell.

Where does it say that a spellcasting focus being worn on your person eliminates your need for a free hand to use somatic components? It says that if you're holding a spellcasting focus in your hand, you can also do somatic components with that same hand. But if you're not holding it in your hand - as with a holy symbol that you're wearing around your neck or whatever - then it does not free you from the need to have a free hand for somatic somponents.

Probably this, at 8th level you should have 20 AC if your job is being on the front killing niggas at melee. 25+ at high level (15th+).

It also depends on what your GM throws at you, there're high level monsters that even with 25 AC they're going to hit you more than half of the time (+17 to hit and like 4 attacks).

I've got an idea.

Fighter 4/Rogue 4. Take your first three levels in Fighter, the next four in Rogue, and then a level in each. Take Leather Armor, a Polearm, and a Whip as your starting equipment. For starting stats, after racial bonus, have 16/16/13/8/12/10. Take Lunging Attack for one maneuver, then whatever you want for the others. Give Stealth expertise.

What else guys, after the initial 8 levels. Honestly the main factors we're looking at are Superiority Dice, Sneak Attack Dice, and Ability Score Increases, since we're MAD as fuck.

Hmm, I didn't think of those. (except defense style, I did actually mention that)
So, let's say we're at 32 without the shield spell for now:
32 + 2 shield of faith = 34
+ 3 defender sword = 37
(That's without using your reaction, which is pretty fucking ridiculous)
using your reaction for shield it's 42
using it for evasive footwork it's 38-49

The Tarrasque (which has +19 to attack) has a highest possible non nat-20 rol of 38, meaning it can just barely hit the ac even without the reaction being used, and you'll only need to roll a 2 with evasive footwork to dodge it.

Evasive Footwork actually doesn't use your reaction. As long as you're moving, your AC gets a bonus of whatever you roll.

Alright, after looking at the weretiger (and sabretooth tiger and regular tiger) and their Pounce ability, I see what you mean.
The grapple is, I feel, an important part of the volatile pounce (and plenty of monsters have automatic grapple contested on your turn anyways), but I can see where other issues lie. So, my proposed change to the Pounce attack is the following:
Pounce. If the Volatile moves at least 15 feet straight towards a creature and then hits it with a claw swipe on the same turn, the target is grappled automatically and must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

How does that look?

Exceptional Strength in AD&D was Ogre strength. Giant Strength potions started at 19, and went up from there. Coincidentally?

>5E MM
Ogre: Str 19.
Hill Giant: Str 21.

So yeah, you possibly lose out on a single point of strength… with no attribute bonus change. Losing Exceptional Strength is actually a boost for AD&D 2E -> 5E Conversion as Str 18 or Str 18/50 and lower were p-much shit compared to 5E's Str 18 benefits.

If a Lizardman is wearing armour which would give an AC less than its 13+Dex armour it can use 13+Dex

I like this because it means you can use magical armour but still use your kickass AC calculation
>>
>>50085869
So, I'm not a fan of having to give up stat boosts for feats.

I'm contemplating allowing for both.

You'd gain ability increases at the normal rate.

Then, for feats, you'd gain a feat at maybe 1,5,10,15,20 (Maybe this will be a bit much, might need to go 1,7,14,20).

The only thing I'm unsure how to handle, are the feats which *INCLUDE* an attribute increase.

Any suggestions?

Any glaring holes in the idea?
>>
>there's a kid icarus option for aasimar

Paladin's out because you can't use bows for smite, what are some other options? Fighter works if you don't mind your stat boosts going to waste.
>>
>>50090037
This would effectively neuter Fighters and Rogues when it comes to their additional attribute gain as now it's not "Five v Six / Seven" but "Ten v Eleven / Twelve". 5E (rightfully) considers 3.5 / PF's progression as a bug not a feature.

I'd like some input.

Playing Curse of Strahd, and my party had been wanting me (Crossbow Expert Fighter) to start tanking more. Alright, I decided I'd tank for them last night, and I died. Don't really care about losing the character, wasn't attached to him, but now I need to roll up someone new, and I'm not sure what I want to play. Party comp is:

Bard, Paladin, Rogue, Sorcerer, Warlock, Wizard

Ideally, I would want to be a Cleric, but the only Cleric domain I think I want is Nature, and I'm not really seeing a good way to make a Nature Cleric interesting. Don't wanna be a Druid (first character I played was a Druid, he died too). Alternatively, I could be a Barbarian, but the only Barbarian I'd want to be is a Frenzy Barb, and I'm not really sure where to go in that direction.

In all seriousness, even if I buy *EVERY BOOK*; I don't always want to transport them all with me. I'd rather just bring 1 or 2 books with me and leave the rest at home, and use a tablet for everything else.

Plus, if someone else at the table wants to see something in a book they don't own, I'm not big on book-sharing.

Why even make it a Volo's Guide at all if it's going to include greyhawk references, and retcon a lot of the actual Realms stuff?

So, I'm just getting into 5e.

What are some of the pitfalls of the system (every system has something).

Im looking for stuff that nags at you, stuff that doesn't work well, or stuff that doesn't make sense.

I'm a little uncertain of advantage disadvantage. I can appreciate not wanting a thousand fiddly modifiers, but I have to say I'm a bit concerned "good" / "medium" / "bad" simply won't be granular enough. How does it work out in play?

Is there anything that you can think of that you don't like?

Just say there's nothing new under the sun. You're always imitating something even if it's a new idea to your party. Somehow the kenku got the idea to be messenger relays, dream of flight and their other unique traits after all.
>>
>>50090161
I'm assuming that that paladin is a dex-paladin, otherwise he should be tanking too.

Outside of Paladin, you've got a few real good options. The first you could do is a Cleric. They are overpowered in CoS, however you've got 4 full casters, so I'd avoid it.

Your best option is either a Fighter or a Barbarian. I'll start with the easy one first, Barbarian.

Frenzy is terrible, and by far it's the worst option for a tank. You want to tank as a barbarian? Goliath Bear Totem Barbarian. You resist all damage types except psychic, can lift thousands of pounds, and do all sorts of crazy shit. Don't where armour, and drop intelligence. Never go Frenzy, it is one of the few trap options in 5E, and you will not enjoy constantly having exhaustion.

The other option is a fighter. As long as you have heavy armour on, and you either are going heavy weapon, or sword and board, you're gonna be a great tank. Wanna go all out tank, never let any of your teammates get hurt? Pick Variant Human, and take the sentinel feat, along with the protection fighting style. Use a shield, and a whip. Why a whip? Well they don't do much damage, however they are the only one handed reach weapon, and you aren't looking to damage, just tank, right?

Take Battlemaster. Use maneuvers to keep enemies out of the fight, or distracted. For Feats, take shield master, which is a life-saver, as anyone using heavy armour should be dumping dexterity. That or just go champion half-orc with a greataxe and tank, and by that I mean do so much damage that enemies concentrate on taking you out first.
>>
>>50090723
that was just an idea. for a kenku who has never heard a word of common before in their life.
>>
>>50090749
What are the greyhawk references?

5e prime quality and drawback is it's simplicity. They give lots of leeway to the DM, so if you feel it's too simple you can steer things your way. For reference, advantage is worth about +5 in average, so you can toy with actual numbers as you see fit.

There is nothing that needs a house rule, except crafting rules.

Honestly, even the rules that are often ignored, such as carry weight, has cool shit associated with it, like lift weight. Usually it's quite underwhelming, until you realize that your lift weight is how much you can lift without having to roll.

That means that, if you do the proper build, by level 6 a goliath barbarian can lift almost 2300 pounds, anything after that and they have to roll, and only after.

Honestly the hardest thing to do as a DM is coming up with appropriate DCs, but I usually just think "is that good enough for what he's trying to do?"

They should be +2 Dex/Str +Int (because they're still cunning predators), for god sakes their "clases" are Warrior, Berserker, Knight, Assassin and Shaman. Only Knight sounds like it can have Cha.

The +2 Cha +1 Int fits in some of the vampire clans from Innistrad though (Voldaren & Markov)

>In what RPG do the stats not define what your character can do? How else would you even do it?
Back in ye olde days your stats weren't that important, a 9 Str fighter was as good as a 15 Str one. In Anima BF your stats are important to a degree, (on d100 bonuses from +0 to +10) but at certain level a +10 to attack from your stat didn't matter at all compared to a +0, when you have +150 to attack for example at 3rd level is no different than having a +160

TWF. THF. Shields themselves.

Do you mean you can't use your shield hand for stuff "while using a shield"?

What would you use it for? Can you give an example from another RPG or something?

I'd think even casting divine spells would be tricky. You can't wiggle your fingers and wrists that much while carrying a shield.

Rules say it won't, it's pretty easy in fact, just say "See this shield? it's my divine focus" boom, done, now I do ANY somatic (for component+somatic spells) stuff with that "useless" hand

I...

Can't imagine any GM tracking this closely enough that they would actually enforce such a rule.

I have never asked (in the 16 years I've been GMing) a PC *HOW* they open a door with a weapon in one hand and a shield in the other. Or how they use their shield hand in the process of reloading a crossbow. Or hold an item they can carry in one hand.

Does this really come up at tables?

I can see caring if it's somatic components, or if you're trying to dual wield while also using a shield, or something equally silly.

>>50091394
I know magic items are less common than 3e, but are continual flame tokens actually hard to come by now?

And again, I can't imagine ever *CARING* that a player wanted to carry a torch in their shield hand.

I can, both in and out of Adventure League had to deal with this shit, 5e on average is pretty much on board of stuff like that, in fact the reloading crossbow part is an outright "fuck you, no, you can't".

Dual wield with shield I understand being a nono.

Level 3 rogue features mostly offer combat/utility, whereas they also tend to have less useful abilities at level 8 and such.

AT however not only gets some pretty good utility, but also continues to gain spell slots and can concentrate on something such as 'haste' later on.

They can still take a few spells that aren't enchantment/illusion.

>>50091549
Pact of the blade is literally just 'you can summon a weapon as an action, lol' which is pretty fucking stupid, especially on a class that isn't a front-lining type and has a very powerful cantrip (eldritch blast).

Pact of the tome is better, because it gives you shillelagh.
>>

>the length of the shield itself is massive, jutting far beyond the length of my hand so that even if I could move it, I can't reach to pick anything up, and I chose this on purpose when I was buying shields from the blacksmith
>I cannot place a bolt in a hand crossbow, hold someone down with my arm, carry a torch, drink a glass of milk, open a door, pick up a small rock, or hang a keychain from my wrist
>I can cast divine spells just fine though
Just get rid of this stupid fucking rule and have shields prevent you from dual wielding or using two-handed weapons. Stop arguing over what's RAW or RAI and just make your own games better. >Your melee doesn't get bonus action extra attack
Unless I have GWM, why can you have xbow xpert but I can't have a feat?
>>
>>50091684
You can do that. But then what benefit have you got?

You've just obtained proficiency in a single weapon. Congratulations.

It does generally less damage than eldritch blast, requires you to waste your pact option and requires you to put yourself in danger to fight.

You already get eldritch blast, and eldritch blast even has a neat '10ft knockback' invocation you can add, and hex works better as it adds 1d6 to every attack.

If you take a strength weapon (Say, maul, 2d6) you then rely on your strength to hit things. You require strength AND charisma for attacking, dexterity AND constitution for defence.
If you take a rapier then you have a 1d8 weapon that's worse than pact of the tome's shillelagh club.

If you use shillelagh + eldritch blast, you only need charisma to fight, but dex and con help your defence.

Pact of the chain is OP if you can abuse it, but even if you don't abuse it it's a generally very useful utility to have an invisible minion wandering around telling you the location of everything.
>>
Playing a Wizard Kobold in my 5E campaign, a little dissapointed with the new one. We were using a simple homebrew that gave +2 dex, +1 con and advantage on any skill checks or saving throws related to traps on the condition that if Volos has one I'll switch to it.

So now I get stuck with the shitty sunlight sensitivity but get pack tactics which good for like.. What spell attacks even use ranged rolls, assuming I'm not getting cucked by bright light.

And I can have my regal, pompous kobold wizard who wears regal robes of finery and requests royalty and even dragons treat him as an equal, although only two so far have done so (Mostly humoring him.) now have the ability to throw himself into melee combat and cry and have a tantrum begging for his life for a bonus?

Pretty sure people are saying "they are martial in disguise". Because their main job in combat is spam Eldritch Blast to do damage, like an archer.

If you have real magic weapon, there is really no point in using pact of the blade (unless you really want that +CHA to attack), extra attack isn't worth an invocation when you can just use Booming Blade / Green-flame Blade.

You sometimes gain an extra attack. With rerolling 1's and 2's, an attack without a bonus action attack is about the same damage as all 5 crossbow shots

Two handed have the advantage of sometimes getting an extra attack (about 23 more damage) and OA's

GWM bonus attack only activate when you kill an enemy. CR6 stuff already has over 100 hp. You can't expect to kill one every round or even every other round, thus it can't be count.

And you knew that GWF on Greatsword only increase like +1.33 average damage right?

+2 to accuracy from archery at 1d6+15 damage is ~+1.6-1.85 damage depend on your initial hit rate, which is still higher than GWF either way.
