I like the generally simple look of IA in 3rd ed., just power armour and a bolter, no grenades, no magazine pouches. Granted, technology of the day didn't allow it so the art was appropriated, but I'm not yet sure if it was better that way or if it's just a nostalgic view.

Their LA rules are bland, and one of the few legions left with a genuine disadvantage - the heaviest one too.

Theirs Rites of War and unique wargear make up for it quite a bit though. Shame those rules are not nearly as loose cannon as the blood-angel ones. Would of been nice to see Plasma-cannon Cataphractii but beatstrick centurions with Terranic Greatswords are alot of fun.

Ironwing and Ravenwing are two of the most meaty RoWs though. The former giving you a nasty mechanised infantry army and tank squadrons with very powerful dreadnoughts. The latter is absolute savagery against Mechanicum.

I'd like them to get stubborn and for the mastery of the blade rule it applied a bit more. Something like 'when attacking with a sword etc, they get +1 weapon skill', enough of a boost that it helps you in more situations than basic marine vs basic marine match ups but it also not so powerful that you can go alone against palatine blades or butchers or whatever.

Small Emperor's Children Force/Traitor Shattered Legion EC component concept

Company Chapter and member of the Palatine Blades censured for failure by Fulgrim, sent off to hunt the survivors of Istvaan and hopefully die in the attempt. Guy is a Grade AAA pompous asshole in a Legion of Grade A pompous assholes, and his failure and censure is part of what makes him crack and fall into the depravity afflicting his entire Legion.

Do the character (and probably his palatines too) in entirely platinum armour (totally fluff appropriate, check the Palatine Blade art plate from like Book 1 or 2) with gold embellishments, to drive home this knightly glory, but cover him in buckets of blood to offset that with his depravity.

Call him -insert name here- The Immaculate One, Legion Champion on tabletop that runs with a squad of Palatine blades. I have a Relic Blade from a 40k vanguard sprue that I've notched and cracked that I want to use for him.

He'll bring with him his personal retinue of Palatines that suffered the same censure as he, and in tow, a contingent of Sun Killers, some of which have degenerated into Kakophoni. I want my Sun Killers to really show off the gold in the EC palette, I may even try and find some BA death masks with those solar haloes, whereas my Kakophoni will swap out the gold component of their palette for bronze, which will be heavily verdigrised for a baroque yet neglected kind of look.

I realize I don't have all my battlefield roles covered, but this is a hypothetical selection of squad to complement some Alpha Legion I have to make a shattered legion list, and I don't really give a toss about tabletop effectiveness, I want this fluff concept to live on tabletop.

My autism is somewhat satisfied by my explanation that the blast shields are for covering the exhaust from the missiles/rockets so the targeter can work properly.

Deathwing and Ravenwing, did they serve different tactical purposes in the Heresy? Or were they Terminator Elite and Rapid Assault specialists even then?

Ironwing seems to be (based on the rite of war) The Dark Angels' armoured materiel contingents, though correct me if I'm wrong.

I wonder, will Firewing be what it sounds like? "BURN THE UNCOMPLIANT" flame and melta specialists? Maybe artillery focussed?

Dreadwing, are these the xenocide campaign dudes? Proscribed weaponry specialists? What do you think?

Well Magnus did become a Daemon Primarch the instant after Russ broke Magnus' spine over his knee, so during the rest of the HH and all the time he was actually part of the traitors Magnus looks like that. And Magnus didn't participate in the battle for prospero outside of his dual with Russ, that is a rather short time period for which you'd need FW's uncorrupted Primarch Magnus model ...

The second traitor legion I'm having trouble deciding between the World Eaters and Emperor's Children. On one hand, I love purple. On the other, they're so similar to Blood Angels that I'm not sure if I want to do that. I like your Shattered Legion plan.

Do people avoid Sons of Horus because they feel like they'd be trying it on as the special snowflake?

Swap your land speeders with Javelins. Grav is nice and all,but twin-linked BS5 lascannons and BS5 multimeltas are pretty good too. But even better is Outflank. Keep your Damocles somewhere safe, use the reroll to get your speeders in, but don't worry about having to deep strike them. It's only a few more points, but you can cut the Dozer Blades from the Damocles and be fine if you keep it in your backfield. Plus, Javelins are immune to bolters and can't be penned by S5.

They only require allies if you run that particular Rite of War. You don't have to, and you should probably come up with a plan for events that don't accept Shattered Legions (since they're difficult to balance, they're a "requires your opponent's permission" sort of army). You could run them as Blackshields, which don't have to be black, or just run them as White Scars with self-imposed limits on equipment (the same limits Blackshields have, like no drop pods) and possibly no terminators. Chogorian Brotherhood is always good, unless your local meta decides it's OP.

They're likely to use flyers and I know there's a generic rite of war for those, dunno if it's any good. I wonder if there's a good way to run an Arvus Lighter without pretending it's a Storm Eagle.

Anyways, I'm thinking of starting a small Salamanders force, maybe when BoP comes out. Any ideas for a small, 1000 point list I can build towards? I'm thinking 2 units of breachers, a Centurion (or Praetor) with a squad of Terminators, and maybe some light armour. Playing as the noblebright heroes and champions of humanity in the Age of Darkness is appealing as fuck to me at the moment.

Well, what do we know about Sanguinius?

He should be able to fly, so FMC for sure, and probably confers bonuses to deep striking or jump pack troops.

He should be able to take pre-chaos Horus in a fight, so probably killiest of all the primarchs.

He should have some sort of bezerker mechanic, gaining WS, S and A as he loses wounds or something.

He shouldn't be too tough to kill.

He should have some kind of untapped psychic potential, maybe a reroll like Corbulo gets in 40k.

All BA units should go apeshit if he dies, something like losing scoring, but gaining rage and furious charge.

He should cost a lot of points, probably the most expensive primarch.

I'd dare to say there was less than that as Fulgrim sent a third of his legion in the first wave to Isstvan 3, and the losses there have been high for traitors.
Their numbers have been further diminished in the Dropsite Massacre so it's likely there were some 30-40,000 marines post-Isstvan 5, but it's safe to assume the apothecarion started replenishing the numbers even if the legion command was uncaring at best.

Alpha Legion most likely retained most of their numbers simply because they were never fully committed to the Heresy, but we can't be sure if they remained the largest legion as their numbers are guesswork at best.
The most losses they had was probably due to their own infighting and later on against the Ultramarines.
Word Bearers had lost 50,000 on Calth alone, with additional losses mounting high wherever they fought as they viewed every death in the name of the Gods a worthy one. Then the forced daemonic possession where one in thousand survived to be formed into Vakrah Jal.
The two legions surest in victory, the Sons of Horus and the Word Bearers, probably lost the most numbers, although others' modes of warfare (or just the initial low numbers - Thousand Sons) ensured they weren't far behind, meaning most of the traitor legions retreated into the Eye in ranging between 10 to 20 thousand, and much more likely in mere thousands.
