I don't know if you have the space, but have all your paints and tools out and start to paint something. When you are finished for the day, don't put anything away, just leave it there or put it to the side. The next time you'll come home it will take 5 minutes to continue painting. I do this and it works.

I want to use them alongside my Khornate IG as Renegades and Heretics but Im at a bit of a loss as what to count everything as and what to add to them. >>
>>47763205
>>47763375
An (arguably) easier way would be to drill a hole where the rivet is going, glue in a short length of matching plastic rod, then file down to the correct height when dry. Preslicing rod sections is great for ork stuff, but anything else wants a bit more precision and plotting.
>>
>>47763658
Eh, I got it sealed from a guy on Bartertown who apparently bought an army, then decided he didn't want it, so no way to get a refund.

Still gonna make the best of it, but it was damned irritating. If the other kits are as wonky, I might run with it a bit and build them as goofy as possible, then give them the best paintjob I can. Could be fun.

Hatch is perfect there, I think. As for the radio, it can work fine there, but if you're going to have a pintle mounted weapon, consider that if it were to rotate, it would probably hit it on the way. Moving it to the back would alleviate that problem.

The spotlight is adorable, I like it.

hi /wip/, i recently picked up some nurgle units (a plaguelord and some nurglings) and I'm thinking about a maggot-white flesh with red washes and details as a sort of albino colour, to avoid the typical green.

I would appreciate any opinions, thanks

Now that Eldar Dreadnoughts can carry multiple big shootas without giving up an arm to do so, I should really think about recasting some left arms, heavy weapon exhaust vanes, and the double shoulder joiners if I ever want to rehabilitate those ladz.

get a very thin rod of plastic (look up plastruct on amazon), slice it really thin, and use tweezers and thin plastic cement to apply.

Hopefully you can see this. It's fine with my colour issues but I know how different they all are.

There's a nice tidy line here. You could turn from there down into a cliff face with some cracks and maybe like a peg with a rope running down.
That would add some interest to your foreground.

Thanks.

Some (most) of the white is supposed to be silver showing chipped paint on the door joint, it does look white in the pic though. That said I agree it looks messy and I'll repaint it I think.

The grime is weathering powder and thinners, works a treat.

Pretty much still have everything to do/finish. Teeth and claws getting highlighted a lot more, metals are going to be regularly metally, the leadbelcher i threw on the knife doesnt seem to show up very well due to it being one very thin coat on a white primed area. Usually i like to plan everything in advance when it comes to models, but i just sorta dove right in and figured out what i was going to paint and how as it came together.
>>

Speaking as someone who doesnt even play Fantasy/AoS, silver tower was worth it just for the models, super high quality, really fun to paint. THe only ones i have any real complaints about are the grots which i think look a bit cheap and not so great.... but its made up for entirely by the smirking berserker and the little bird chaos familiar that looks utterly diabolical.

2. I had a sprue that was missing a part from the factory and GW sent me a whole new box. This almost makes me feel bad for #1

I tallscaled a Space Wolf of mine and magnetized his head and arms. How does he look? I'm new to 40k and I have a bunch of grey hunters to paint. My biggest concern is how his legs will look once I paint over the parts I cut to extend his legs. Should I try to smooth it better with greenstuff or will the small bumps be negligible once I paint over them?
>>
>>47771380
I don't know much about anatomy, but if you make legs bigger shouldn't you make arms and torso bigger too? I thought space maribes' heroic scale meant only head and weapons bigger, not only smaller legs. Also every little bump will show with paint, think of mould lines.
>>
>>47771582
Not the guy you are talking to, but aside from big heads and hands and weapons and feet, heroic GW's minis also tend to have pretty long arms or short legs depending on how you look at it.
The average marine's arm almost reaches down to his knee which is chimpanzee anatomy rather than human.
It all kinda works because of the poses though.

The new tactical kit has a pair of arms where one arm is pretty obviously much longer than the other.
If you look at it from the right direction you won't even notice it.

Lets call it artistic license.
If it makes a pose look larger than life I think it's fair to take a little liberty with it, as long as you don't end up with poses that look like somebody with a broken spine (which has happened too of course).
>>
>>47771582
I think with the SM models, they have some long ass gorilla arms so it works out in the end. I think the heroic scale is probably cooler, but I don't have the time and resources to make one. Also... damn, hopefully I can smooth the legs out with green stuff.
>>

I am waiting for vallejo still water to arrive. I will put the stream in the middle.

The idea was to have some sort of crossing - I thought that marble tiles would work well but I don't know what to do next.
The cork tiles looks a too rough to be marble, now they just look like awful concrete slabs. Any ideas? I might just strip them and put just another slab of cork there.

break up the carapace-y curved armour with bulky and edged armour plates, graft a power klaw on with greenstuff and wiring, possibly some pistons, and then some suitably large gun on the other arm.

Thanks guys I just bought the miniature and paint and when I walked out of the store I realized it needs to be assembled. What kinda glue do I use to put it together? What are the steps for getting the mini ready to paint
>>
>>47777880
I agree
>>
>>47778414
i think googling will give you a better array of more detailed answers, but first off, use super glue, the normal market one, plastic glue is too strong and you won't be able to dismantle the model. Do not asssemble the whole model for the sake of it, just get to the point where going on will impede your painting and stop. Tipically people leave arms and sometimes heads off to be painted separately. After you glued and think you are ready to paint, file off mould lines. You now think they are not important, but they will be very obvious after painting. look closely for a little bump line which goes all aorund the model and file it. It's hard to see for beginners, but try. (if you scrape off mould lines before gluing it will be easier sometimes). Now you should Greenstuff or milliput some cracks which could be in the parts you glued in your miniature and you should be good.(to be honest i would skip the filling for the first times)
>>
>>47778414
best thing would be plastic cement. This basically melts all the parts into one.

Before you can get to painting you want to remove all the pieces from the sprue, clean the moldlines, assemble as far as you can without obstructing anything later for painting and then - this is important - clean the models with dishsoap or something before you prime them. The cleaning gets rid of any residual mold release that might prevent your primer from sticking.

If you have a basing theme that lends itself to it, you can add sand or other stuff to the bases before priming as well. Might save you a little time later.
I use wood glue to glue sand and flock to the bases. For the sand I also add a second pass of diluted wood glue once I've glued it down, so it can resist recent handling and won't rub off.
>>
>>47778567
i am>>47778567 i don't know if it's a good idea to advice a noob to use plastic glue, as you said it melts plastic and when he will go back to his models and eventually regrett his rookie mistakes it will be hard to undo them.

>>47778776
ops, first quote should have been>>47778601

>>47778776
super glue is a real pain to remove. Better to do it right, learn to clean the parts and assemble them properly from the beginning.
>>
>>47778242
just use water instead of vaseline.
>>
>>47778835
Super glue is a pain, but plastic cement is nigh impossible without cutting it off which will easily result in a mess. You can't tell me you would prefer to have to repose a mini glued with plastic glue then one glued with super glue, regardless of him needing to learn.
>>
>>47777623
Cool I have some kills kan and deff dread big shootas. But how do you think I should attach them? Cut off the hand and make it look like it's his new hand? Or mount it on his gauntlet?

>>
>>47778776
>>47778835
>super glue is a real pain to remove.
just put the mini into the freezer, then you can disassemble easily, and scratch off the glue.
>>47778898

now this one, I agree with. You can also try the freezer method, but since it melts the plastic and connects the parts that way, it is really butcher work. (but can be done)

Superglue brand Super Glue Gel is the best shit for plastics. Disregard gits who say zapagap or GW's glues.

Plastic Cement is a side-grade, and if you fuck up there's no undoing it since it melts the plastic together instead of bonding them.

Superglue brand superglue gel is also cheap and easy to obtain, since it's at dollar stores and supermarts.

It also doesn't crystallize like zap and GW glues do, and doesn't fucking bond to skin better than it does plastic.

Can I get some advice on this guy?
Not on the OSL, I'm very aware of how sloppy it is, this is a test model.
I'm wondering about colors. He looks far too bronze. I fucking love the way the bronze turned out, and while I do want that to be the predominant in your face LOOK-AT-ALL-MY-FUCKING-BRONZE look of the color, this is just too much.
I tried painting all the gear bits to chainmail, but it wasn't enough.
I'm worried that if I start picking out too many other bits and painting them the same color, then it might appear in too many places and detract from the bronze color by looking like a bunch of little ugly spots.

I really want the bronze to stand out with the green OSL as a little distraction and the chainmail where necessary.
What should I do, /wip/?
>>
>>47779744

To expand just a bit, if I started to paint all the bolts and rivets and whatnot chainmail... well, that's a lot of bolts and rivets and I'm afraid it'd start to look like polka dots.
Ugly metal polka dots.
>>
>>47779766
what about making the joints, which look like flathead screws, brass?
>>
>>47779822

Distilled water is fine (no tap water; no need to add contaminants into the mix when distilled is $1/gal). You'll want to thin it down @ 3:1 or so (the same thinness as a wash). If distilled alone isn't quite working out, you can homebrew some thinners by mixing distilled 50/50 with artist's acrylic medium (the liquid kind - any art store or Michael's, etc will sell you some).

Progress update, because if I post them somewhere, I won't paint ever.

Last time I posted these guys, you guys seemed to think that the green looked a bit off and that I should use another green color. Honestly, I didn't share that opinion, but constructive criticism is always welcome, and I'm really using these plaguebearers as a way to experiment with bright color schemes.

I really liked the green color on their pus boils, but somebody suggested using a flesh wash around them before laying the green color down. The red wash makes the boils look less neon, but it also brings the general color tone of the entire model down when you look at it from afar, which I really don't like. I still have to go back in and touch up on some of the stray red wash to make it look less sloppy.

Some of the boils and a tooth or two on his belly have slightly too thick paint because I wasn't paying attention.

Not sure how I like the results, but experimenting and taking criticism is part of why I'm here.

Also, I made a makeshift photobox out of plasticard, so hopefully these images are less shit quality..

water washes are useful sometimes, but you have to get the ratio just right

It's a bit flat. There's a World Eater leviathan floating around somewhere on the internet which has a really good bronze effect. I think it was achieved by starting from tin bitz or something, lightly drybrushing gold, and finally some silver. Gives it a lot more depth.

>>
>>47784364
>how would you recommend going from chaos black primer to flash gitz yellow
By removing the Chaos Black primer and using a white primer instead.
I'm serious.

Other than that, try painting a white base coat over it first and then painting over that with a yellow.
This will lead to the same paint thickness in most situations, but the color will be much nicer - more like a nice slice of American rather than a chunk.
>>
>>47784364
Holy shit.

Dark brown, light brown, dark yellow light yellow.

Colours in 3ish coats from the point you hit the yellows. Super thin paints let them throughly dry in between.
>>
>>47784395
Which white primer would you recommend? I tried krylon but it gunked up my test model because I'm artistically challenged, so I wanna stick with the hobby stuff. Is the p3 or army painter white any good? Citadel doesn't make a white primer anymore...just a damn base coat.

Neither one. The light cast by OSL always needs to leave the area it hits brighter than the rest of the mini, but darker than the source of that light.

Better than thin your paints tier. Robes are nice. Yellow needs work.

>>
>>47784497
Also one last question: I'm gonna try thinning and layering over the black tomorrow first, because I really am just trying to get to tabletop a standard here. Would you use Celestra Grey or Ceramite White before adding yellow? And should I be thinning those base colors too? Sorry for all the questions.
>>
>>47784515
First off I'd say to thin every paint you're going to use (sans primer).
As for whether to go Celestra Gray or Ceramite White, I'd use Ceramite White since it's a tad whiter and thus the yellow applied over it will also tend to be a lighter shade than if you were to use a grayer undercoat.

Overall I'd go Ceramite White (undercoat) -> Yriel Yellow (basecoat) -> Flash Gitz Yellow (highlight). This should give you a fairly good base to do a wash/glaze over (either a shade of Casandora Yellow/Seraphim Sepia or a glaze of Lamenters Yellow).

I never paint yellow so take my advice with a grain of salt however.
>>
>>47784495

>>47784587
stay like that.

>>

Right, so that OSL is badly wrong. It must form a highlight, it has to be lighter than the white. It's a light source. If you wanted to do OSL on white then you probably should have painted the model in a cool grey colour, highlighting up towards a warm white the closer you get to the hammer. As it is, the white you've used for the bulk of the model is really far too light to make OSL work.

Yes, I know it's not the same. That's why I'm asking
>add acrylic medium

guys can i layer blend(the thing some on cmon call juicing) with water diluited paints? I once red a long time ago by a good painter thatas long as you are ok with making lots of thinned down layers with only a little "glaze" on the brush at a time water should work.
>>
>>47784795
Can you? Yes, of course.

However you should be aware that it's much, much harder and it will never look as good as something done with a proper medium.

If you haven't build yourself a wet palette, do it. It's easy and really worth the effort. This palette helps you keep your paints wet much longer, giving you the possibility blend your layers. It will still take a lot of layers, due to the different way that water mixes with paint, but you can do it. But you should also consider that glaze medium from Vallejo is like 2.5 euros or something, at least over at my FLGS, so i can only recommend that. Believe me, you'll safe yourself a lot of time, anger and frustration.

i guess then ill just ignore the light effct thing next batch of models...
>>
>>47784901

Or, you know, look up some examples of decent OSL and figure out how it's done.

Nah, these are just poorly painted. The models look a little cartoony but they're very detailed

How do I ensure that my paint is smooth when I'm painting a small area with a small brush. Even when I thin it it just seems to not be thin enough, especially when I'm painting a light colour like white or yellow.

Thank you, yes i plan on buying medium, but right now i don't even have the Money for my paints.

We're at the bump limit, but ... just for you, anon!

>I got two coming in the mail but I don't have any backpacks that I think will fit.

It's just the regular "bump" that was common to most First Edition beekees. If you have a First Edition plastic backpack, it will work perfectly. If you have any Second Edition "Strike Force" backpacks, those should look nice too. If all you have is Third Edition or later backpacks... they're gonna look a little big.
