The problem is there are only 4 LMP1 cars. If you are thinking about the multi class racing, F1 already has that. If there isn't any safety cars, the leaders usually lap the field up to 8th position.

There are two Mercedes racing two Ferraris in F1 and two Toyotas racing two Porsches in WEC. All the other cars are trying to just points.

Would cutting the cost of running a F1 tean in half be beneficial to the series?
I'm not asking for any specific changes, I don't know what would be smart ways to cut cost. I just wonder if the fans, the teams, F1 and the FIA could benefit from such an approach, even if it would make the cars slower.
Or would it hurt it's standing with fans?
>>
>>77328998

Sure, but the E30's are generally pretty straight forward to fix aside from a few known annoying things that can happen. Certainly better than the turbo autism that BMW is nowadays where you pretty much cannot fix one yourself. I have no real interest in modern BMW's or BMW as a brand. I just like the E30's and E28's. And I know they aren't new cars so I wouldn't be thinking of getting one if I wasn't aware that they need maintenance and repairs.

There's really no real "bulletproof" car that has decent performance, everything will require maintenance and fixing sooner or later and something like a well-kept E30 certainly isn't the lowest on that list.
>>
>>77329094
F1 is supposed to be the Top of the Top
cutting cost is going to lower that top
i think having the engine supplier not giving the best version of their engine to every team is a mistake
they should play fair so that small team can play with the grown up
kinda like Renault right now
>>
>>77329131
Jesus Finland, it was a joke.
>>
>>77329094

It would make the barriers for entry much lower, privateers able to actually challenge for decent positions, attract new teams, level the playing field etc.

But it's impossible to implement, and even if FIA assigned a budget gap, the big teams like Ferrari and Mercedes would just jew their way through it and make parts appear cheaper and less laborous to manufacture than they actually are blah blah. It would be impossible to enforce and would take a huge taskforce to even go through all the finances and whatnot of each team to ensure they are not cheating.

Fans don't give half a shit and fans don't even know what they want. Well actually they do, which is seemingly loud engines and good races, which is correct. But I am convinced fans would happily watch something marginally faster than GP2 if the racing was every bit as good as in that series.

I mean, you have a point with the series being top of the top, but there are regulations already which are just artificial limitations, or, in other words, the cars could be a lot faster, it's just not the formula they are using right now.
I agree that the modern disparity is down to the engines and how that system works, but I don't think Merc and Ferrari will agree to share or even sell their top engine.
>>77329168
It's true that it's hard to implement, I'm not really thinking about that right noiw to be honest, though. I was more wondering about what you're getting at at the end, which is about if fans would accept a series providing a bigger grid and maybe even better racing if the cars would go, let's say up to 20 seconds slower a lap.

Who killed the Sauber-Honda deal?
Was it Sauber or was it Honda? Or maybe was curry tits secretly shit talking about Sauber to Honda to convince them to break the agreement?
>>
>>77329998

Hard to say. There are many options

>Sauber realized Honda are shit and still in such deep shit that it's simply not worth it
>Sauber wanted more money from Honda than what they were willing to pay
>Sauber learned that Honda is leaving the sport after 2017
>Ferrari have two good young drivers they need to get into F1 ("I am confident Ferrari will find me a seat for next year" -Giothenazi) and Ferrari offered Sauber a lot of money and/or free engines to get one of their wonderboys a drive and bring some sort of legitimacy to the Ferrari Academy etc
>Vasseur made a Sauber-Renault deal happen (unlikely)

The timing of curry tits' departure could also suggest that the Honda deal was her doing, and the other shareholders didn't agree with this, and are now announcing the end of that partnership because it is safe to assume they have secured another engine supplier.

Maybe they even got Merc engines because Wehrlein but I highly doubt it, and I highly hope Mercedes stops trying to meme the Princess into a good driver because he isn't anything above decent in F1 standards.

That's a good option, but I don't know why they wanted to leave Ferrari in the first place, they were paying too much?

>Maybe they even got Merc engines because Wehrlein but I highly doubt it, and I highly hope Mercedes stops trying to meme the Princess into a good driver because he isn't anything above decent in F1 standards.

Difficult, I don't see Mercedes increasing the engine production, especially after the rumors they wanted to basically have only 2 client teams, plus Pascal was likely sent to Sauber just to give him one last chance to get a seat outside the Merc sphere of influence

Outdated engines are worse than unreliable ones.

Are Sauber getting brand new, 2016 spec engines or leftovers from the factory team last year?

>>
>>77330391

I think the thing with Ferrari was that Sauber initially could not afford (or chose not to spend money on a throw-away year) a current spec Ferrari engine. I don't think there's any falling out between the two, it's just that Honda paid Sauber a lot of money supposedly to have them become Sauber-Honda. Sauber obviously welcomed the money and the slight elevation in the food chain (they are obviously the lowest priority Ferrari client).

Sauber will likely go back to Ferrari, but the question is, is it because Ferrari offered them enough money or engines to ditch Honda, or are they returning now because things with Honda didn't work out. Either way, hopefully Pascal will fuck off now and we will get a Ferrari-junior-at-Sauber and get the Massa treatment. I honestly wish Ericsson would fuck off too but that won't happen knowing his backers own a good portion of the team.

They should just rebrand it Sauber-Alfa Romeo and get the Alfa marketing rolling, then start up a proper Ferrari junior Alfa Romeo team in a few years, or buy Sauber.

Agree with much of the first two paragraphs, although they could do a lot worse than Pascal. That said, I'd pick Leclerc over him, especially if he came with a sweet engine deal. I'd rather see Sauber stay as a privateer team though. I think F1 needs teams like them.
>>
>>77329689
yeah but the fuel limits make sense because they still manage to be the fastest cars while consuming 30% less fuel
which is really impressive in terms of efficiency
yeah merc and ferrari won't share their best engine i think honda and maybe other motorist can change that and maybe Renault will make a great engine again

I guess new ones, it's not like they have leftovers since they don't make them in exceed. The only team with engine surplus is Mercedes because of Manor.

>>77330785

Well, according to the swede it was because owners didn't like Honda.
I like the idea of an Alfa-Romeo brand to make the name go around, according to rumors that's what Ferrari wanted to do with McLaren too but I don't see them buying Sauber at all, big part of the marketing comes from being ITALIA, more likely they'll buy a new spot, that also should please the american owners

fly-by-wire = brake-by-wire
F1 uses the same technology as aviation.
Instead of a mechanical linkage the brake pedal is attached to a computer just like the controls in a fighter jet.
Enzo Ferrari got the prancing horse logo from a WWI ace pilot. Planes and F1 are very much related.

if you really want to get into semantics yes they are inherently similar. hence the "by-wire" part. that's the point I was making. the same as "throttle-by-wire" all it means is that the controls are connected through wires to a computer. It's more complicated than a mouse.
>"By-wire" means that the control input is physically disconnected from the mechanical end device we want to control. There is no physical linkage between the control input and the mechanical device on the car except electical wire. In planes (fly-by-wire) the pedals and stick are attached by wire (electrical wire) to a computer that measures the input and then translates that to the control surfaces.
so yeah all "by-wire" technology would share this trait.

I have also always been a Button fan, from when I started watching properly, maybe 13 years ago. Everything you described in your post, how you feel about the possibility of him leaving, the tentativeness at the end of the 08 season up to when he went with brawn, when he won the campionship. I feel exactly the same and felt exactly the same.

I also remember when he got signed with McLaren alongside Hamilton, I was so SO pleased having a all British team, and then finding out that there would be an all German team in Mercedes, Schumacher and Rosberg (the old enemy :P), I was so excited for that season for the Anglo-German shoot out.

My favourite memory of him has to be Canada 2011, I remember watching the race, and it got to that point of the day where I was going to the pub with some mates because of all the rain delays. When we got to the pub the race was on and it had just restarted, everyone I was with had no interest in it and were chatting away.... but not me, I was absolutely glued to that screen, couldn't take my eyes off of it. then that final lap, Jenson closing on Sebastian, I think I was so close to the edge of my seat I was hovering. And then it happened Vettel made that mistake, that fateful, glorious mistake. It was absolutely beautiful. I jumped and shouted in this quiet country pub accidentally throwing my pint over the guy next to me, I was just ecstatic, overjoyed, thrilled. Truly a magical moment in my life

Its one of the few defining moments that I can remember watching F1. Its gonna stick with me forever.

I have such nostalgia for the Hungaroring. Every time we go back I'm reminded of Jenson Button's RELENTLESS performance (not my words, check wikipedia) at the 2004 Hungarian Grand Prix. I knew right then and there that he was future WDC material, despite the fact that he wasn't even in his prime yet.

I'd reckon it was a good 7 years before he hit his prime, at the 2011 Canadian Grand Prix. To think that he also won a WDC before then in an underperforming Brawn is simply incredible. IMO that was the greatest single season performance by a driver in F1 history, the kind of thing that puts Fangio, Senna, Prost, and Schumi all to shame.

It's absolutely pathetic that the man was never picked up by a powerhouse team like Ferrari or Red Bull. He would've put Vettel in his place and pounded his boipussy, just like he's done to his teammate every year. With such driving prowess, I can only assume that they made him an offer and, being the true Englishman he is, Button decided he'd rather rebuild his ailing childhood heroes, Mclaren.

Nonetheless, I would expect big things from Button this weekend. The Hungaroring is a real CHASSIS track and I'd bet Mclaren has the best one on the grid. Nothing short of a top 5 in quali would be acceptable. For the race, a podium is on the cards for sure. Just look at the stats this season. Rosberg won every race until Jenson put the Mclaren in the points, and since then hes only won once. He's in Rosbergs head, got that PSYCHOLOGICAL advantage, and will blow the kid the fuck out when they go wheel to wheel. He's gonna be gunning for the win, I'm sure of it. Honestly, the only question I have about this weekend is whether or not Lewis Hamilton can handle racing with a REAL BRITON.

>During the qualifying session there was controversy when Nelson Piquet made comments in the local media publicly insulting Ayrton Senna, though he later claimed he did not know he was talking to a journalist and was forced to withdraw his allegation under threat of a lawsuit (Over time, these insults by Piquet - with the aid of Prost - also extended to claims that Senna was homosexual, particularly given his failed marriage in 1982; as it transpired in a 1990 interview of Senna by Brazilian edition of Playboy the gay claim may have been motivated by the fact that Senna had apparently had a relation with Piquet's wife when she was single[1]). The World Champion had also been insulting about Nigel Mansell's wife Roxanne (calling her an "unattractive boxhead"), and both drivers' families.

Minimum flex tests have been in a while lad. They just design it in such a way that it can pass the tests but still flex. Look at the front wing can of any car coming out of a corner and into a straight. They Ferrari flexes a ton but so does every car.

Fuck off. Brake by wire still keeps the mechanical linkage as a redundancy feature. The only thing brake by wire does is controlling the brake pressure after taking ERS-K into account. It's basiclly a very advanced ABS.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BA5xba4_CLg

Comparison; fly by wire basically flies the aircraft. No advanced fighter would be able to fly without fly by wire system, because they're not statically stable. Their center of mass and center of lift are in absurd places, to improve maneuverability. To keep it flying, you need computer control. When it fails, this happens.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=faB5bIdksi8

Or in short, there's only brake pressure regulation in brake by wire, it doesn't provide ANY kind of control. Whereas fly by wire is basically responsible from the flight itself by constantly giving it control inputs and keeping the aircraft stable.

>>77333024
Throttle by wire does, brake by wire doesn't. Throttle by wire controls mixture, throttle body etc. If you revved to 4000 rpm and gave 0% throttle, throttle body would still stay open at 0.5%, will increase to about 1.2% at idle rpm, also constant mixture control. With mechanical throttle, 0% means 0% and there's a bypass valve to keep the car idling. There's no mixture control other than a mechanical carburator setting.
>>
Hotpocket-chan can fuck off.
>>
>>77335010
He probably realized one way or another, something would change. Other options are a fucking windshield or closed cockpit. Halo is the lesser evil.

Wish I screencapped my post about this few months ago. Halo WILL happen, because they're obsessed about keeping the drivers >safe from freak accidents that are extremely rare or their own fault like headbutting a tractor.
>>
br bros, which sportv will broadcast fp1 and fp2 tomorrow? 2 or 3?
>>
>>77338281
>There's no mixture control other than a mechanical carburator setting.
Wait, I think I messed up here. I completely forgot about the existance of early fuel injection cars that still had mechanical throttle linkage. Mixture control with ECU was always a thing with SPi or MPi until 90's. Then in late 90's they made things mechanically simpler by giving ECU throttle body control too. So yeah, difference is throttle by wire actually operates the throttle irrelevant of throttle position, what you control is power, not throttle. I never get above 50% under 2500rpm, simply because car can't burn that much fuel.
