The more I read about drivers/teams/outside "experts"/ect thoughts on the new 2017 regs now that they are here the more I feel Bernie knew he was on the way out and wanted to screw the sport over.
Pretty much everything in the 2017 package was what the overtaking work group of yesteryear said not to do. All their recommendations that brought around the 2009 regs that until now have been in place were reversed for literally no reason other than "gotta go fast".

I don't understand why they would go directly against "this is the best spec we can come up with that will allow overtaking" other than to try fuck F1 over.

Thats what I don't really get. Previously for a big package change like this Bernie put it though a research group and then implemented their findings. The change from 2008>2009 did improve that (or I just look fondly to back then and it feels like it did). For what reason would he just decide to change it to "Let's do the opposite of what was recommended lol"? Only thing I can think of is that he wanted to ruin it when he could see he is going to sell F1 and then get given the boot.
At least Brawn has some sense left and is putting together another OWG to find the best solution. Which will probably be going back to the old spec plus a couple of other changes.

F1 could save a lot of money and time by just adopting an Alpine skiing approach and canceling the "races" after qualification, since there isn't much real "racing" that takes place on the track anyway.

The weekend would pretty much be the same as far as practices go, but then the "race" would consist of one car on the track at a time trying to get the fastest lap possible. Hell, the "race" is pretty much decided by qualification anyway, so what's the point?

The whole idea of the new regulations was clearly to try and bring back the spectacle of F1. Over the last decades the majority of the cars have been somewhere on the ugly spectrum and then they neutered the noise for an eco-marketable engine package. Only in the last year or two have the cars begun to rival the lap records of old, which is great but they were usually only a tick faster than the much more exciting cars (not races, cars) of a decade ago. It's time to make them the undisputed fastest cars in F1 history so that the series can be painted as this incredible battle of strength for the drivers.

It's a bit of the FIA and FOM trying to have the best of both worlds though. They want to give the sport a new image and obviously it will come at the cost of on track action as it always has. If I had to guess, I'd say that they are praying for the DRS to pull through and provide enough entertaining passes for the fans. We shall see.

Ever series does the same thing to one extent or another. Prior to a bunch of Indycars flipping over in 2015 there was tons of talk about trying to beat the lap record at Indianapolis for 2016, despite the fact that it was a full 10mph faster than the current cars which were already at the limits of safety (nearly killed Hinchcliffe). Nascar too, in 2014 they went to a high downforce package so that they could do 200 mph averages in qualifying at 1.5 milers and the racing was a crock of shit, so now they're rolling that all back. F1 would probably do the same if they didn't have the DRS to try and cover their ass.

It would probably be impossible to defend if drivers were allowed to use it the entire lap as long as they are within 1 second of another. Right now it's evolved into this system where the competing drivers clearly base their whole preceding lap around the idea of a DRS overtake (which I've noticed that they absolutely love for TV coverage). If the guy behind gets it at the exit of every corner then the guy in front will just compromise himself by defending in one corner to get passed in the next.

For weathered F1 fans, it does desperately need some variety.. Like allow it opened for a certain number of seconds a lap instead of for a segment of track, but the FIA also seems to want to do nothing even remotely complicated with the thing.

Even if it is universally hated, I think people love the idea of last-to-podium drives and guys coming back from mistakes to finish where they deserve, which has probably happened more in the last 5 years than the entirety of F1 history before it. So it would initiate a LOT of passing, or as we call it in the real world, racing. I see why F1 proponents would be opposed to such measures.

Seems like a viable solution to help F1, as they'd have to time it going into and out of corners, which means more driver skill would be involved instead of just technology. Would also help to reduce the advantage of running in clean air, meaning it would be harder for the lead teams to simply drive away from the field and "win" an unopposed "race".

The speed hasn't improved much, the looks slightly improved (but it's still hilarious how fragile and tacky the plastic outer shell is when it's designed just for design's sake and not for aero performance), the car swap is still happening for this and next season, starting from 2018-2019 season it will go away.

Also, big car manufacturers keep coming in so we may be in for some interesting developments if they liberalize the rules a little bit. I love how close the racing is, but when all you can develop is a few parts of the engine it just doesn't feel that high tech.
