The book and movie present those black women as oppressed in part because they're women - but those jobs were set aside for them specifically because they were black and women. Black men did not get the opportunity to work at NASA in large numbers, because the government felt they were better off preparing for war, digging ditches, etc.

The job that those women (there was a whole department of them) actually did was calculating spaceflight trajectories by hand, which sounds impressive until you realize that this was before the age of calculators, and doing it this way was the only option. The work they actually performed was fairly unimportant (if they hadn't done it, someone else would have) and tedious, not something that required a great deal of ingenuity or intelligence. The reason they had so many people working on it was so that they had a certain level of redundancy built-in so that mistakes could be identified and corrected.

This was also back in the day when blacks actually went to school and learned how to do things, so a bunch of black women doing this kind of work was not unusual or shocking, it was literally what they were supposed to do. Only these days are we shocked to find a nigger reading a book or whatever, since the time between then and now has seen such a swift decline of their race.

The job these women were doing was something anyone with a practical understanding of mathematics could accomplish, ie, virtually everyone alive at the time (this was back when schools taught everyone real math).
