First attempt at astro. I know the noise is atrocious but I can only do so much with a d3100 and kit 18-55mm lens. I could have greatly reduced noise and trails by using shorter exposures but I was struggling to get anything bright enough even at 30 seconds and increasing iso just made it even worse without even giving me low enough exposure times to eliminate trails.

Your point on texture makes sense, the idea was to have something in focus to anchor the image a bit and not let it become too hard to look at but I need to leave this one be for a while so that I can come back to it with a fresh perspective. no dude this is really fucking bad, it took me a little while to figure out it was a saxophone player moving, bump the shutter speed to 3s, or 6s, and try to plan out when the head is standing still and the sax is moving, or the other way around.
IF you want to showcase movement, SOMETHING needs to be crystal clear and still, like the subject while the setting is moving around it, or the subject moving in a still environment, refer to the photos over in >>2898560

I think these are really wonderful images, the motion and color are beautiful, and the compositions are tight. In my opinion they are very reminiscent of the work of Ernst Haas. I suggested the blur because I felt that the image was very impressionistic, and the texture felt too real in contrast to the dreamy kinetic blur of the musician. I really like your stuff, keep it up!

Thanks, but I should really point out my own falter that I noticed. During the postprocessing color balances I kinda blew out the Cyans so they are fucked up looking. You can see it in the streetlights.

Yeah, I was helping out a friend, but I've only got 30mm, 85mm and 100mm primes so it was definitely fucked from the start...however from what I understood they want a few busy images anyway seeing as they were from a freestyle competition.

By googling Iloilo it tells me this is likely from the Philippines and my guess was SEA
My point that I'm struggling to make is this: one guesses this is in SEA but there is nothing really to highlight that fact as the people in the background are too far away and your subject isn't interacting with anything/anyone - also observing from the distance.

It's just really hard to focus, easier to backfocus, and is best used with a speedlite or you'll be using 800+ ISO in broad daylight.

It's pretty straight. The bars at the top zig-zag which is probably throwing you off. Also the line in the carpet down the center isn't straight regardless if you're pointing a camera at it or not.
