Still waiting for help with the beginner guides on the Pastebin. I put a little saltwater one in there, but I want to do a river one possibly. Skid typed up a saltwater guide so enjoy the autism and CAbaymang just a trout one.

Thinking about picking up a new hobby? Want to get a memecaster? Haven't mastered the Palomar knot? Click here!

Do they come in the little packages like this? Walmarts normally have a box of these things and sometimes there is some good panfish stuff in there if you dig deep enough.

I don't know if you guys have Ollie's (sort of like Big Lots) stores, but I get a ton of my bait there. They always have literal crates full of Yum, Zoom, and PowerBait for less than a buck a pack. They even have Rapalas and other hard baits for a buck or two.

They're weird colors that clearly don't sell well, but I've never had the fish complain. That's where I buy a lot of my stuff.

I even picked up a Shimano Voltaeus rod for $15 a few summers ago after they got discontinued.

Those look straight. There's a lot of good Zoom stuff in the ~6" range and those 4" Dead Ringers I just saw for the first time at Bass Pro on Saturday.

The 6" Finesse Worms are still one of my go-to baits. Stick it on a 3/0 worm hook with a 1/4oz weight and you are straight. I have at least a dozen different colors of them. The Z-Drop and Shakey Head worms are both bretty gud for finesse stuff as well.

Also gotta stay stocked on the lizards. I just wish I could find more in the 5" and 4" size. Most places only have the 6" lizards. And I'm still amazed Zoom seems to be the only company making lizards.

I don't use senkos much anyway. Those are the only Yums I have bought aside from the couple packs of little panfish stuff. And even if I did use them, I would probably just go with the Strike King ones for $5-$6 because I have done well with their baits.

Culprit still makes my favorite crawdad baits, especially the Incredi-Slim (but those are hard to find). They make some cool colored worms and shit too, I almost grabbed another pack or two at Bass Pro the other day but didn't want to go crazy spending money. Only thing is their plastic is a little harder and will start sliding around the hook a bunch after some use. But those Incredi-Craws work so well that I don't even care.

Funny how they are still like the exact same design. The split rings are cheap so it would def be worth grabbing those and whatever inline hooks will fit.

>>927345
You gotta try those Culprit craws. Bass love the dangly shit and it gives em so much action. Incredi-Slims are the same as the Incredi-Craw but they have a thinner body so a 3/0 or 4/0 EWG will pop out more when you get a bite.

Decent trebles are going to cost the same, if not more.

Non inlines will face the wrong way and probably fuck with the action a bunch as well as losing you some fish. And a single treble will work fine, or just replace em with fresh trebles in the same setup they have now. The single inline hooks do help cast the lures a bit further and don't get hung up on weeds n stuff so much.
>>
>>927372
You'll have to add an extra split ring which may or may not effect the action in a bad way.

Well I got a new Favorite rod in the mail and this one is intact. Gonna get a real for it this weekend most likely.

I'm thinking about getting another model of 13 Fishing or finally buying a Shimano
>>
>>927563
Don't the proceeds go to the vets or something for these? I thought they looked really nice and I hoped I could win one but alas.

I bought one of the Lew's American Hero rods for that reason. Their video pulled at my heart strings so I had to pull the trigger.
>>
>>927564
I think some of them do, but if I'm remembering correctly it wasn't much.

Is that American Hero combo any good? They aren't that expensive and I've almost bought one a few times.
>>
>>927561
The reel is rated from 250yds at 5lbs and 175yds at 10 lbs if that helps. I know this is a dumb noob question but I've never used braid or cat fished.

>>927570
I only got the rod so I can't say for sure. Its nice with my Abu Promax though. For a budget combo that goes to a good cause(getting vets fishing again) I would recommend it.

It'll probably fit around 125-150ish yards of 50lb braid. It's probably a little bit overkill, but that's what I have on my catfish rod too lol.

And as for the mono leader I think that's more for shock absorbtion than anything. Cats aren't line shy.

Is going to be for swimbaits (I think) or if I really need to fling a lure out there.

The only things I don't have a "dedicated*" rod for is drop shots and spinnerbaits.

And I was thinking about that 13 Fishing one because it's a really cool grey color that I think would go well with the rod. We'll see what I'm feelin.

>nb4 you don't need all that to catch fish!

Yes I know but I like getting the most out of my rods and not having to tie on a new lure when I want to try a different presentation.

*usually I only take 3 rods max with me so they do get used for other stuff. It'll just be nice for the spring when I have my boat ready.

Those little crawdads have always been solid. The shape of them with the long lip means they tend to bounce off rocks n stuff before they snag which is cool.

>>927583
Wut size and weight is the rod and reel? I think 50lb braid is about the same diameter as 14lb mono so if the reel says "14lb-140yds" then theoretically it should be close to that. But if you leave some mono on it, that will cut down. Plus those line capacities always seem to be ~20% higher so I would guess if the reel claims 140yds, you would get 110-120yds including the backing.

And mono backing isn't anything fancy. Make sure you tie a good knot and then spool a few yds so the mono covers the whole spool and knot in a couple layers. And a mono leader would probably be more of a shock leader in that case but with 50lb braid I wouldn't even worry about it unless you are launching like 1/2lb+ weights.
>>
>>927561
>>927583
Also with that original post, you really don't even need to do the slip sinker. It's one of the ways, but you can just put a few bigger split shots on if you want or I normally will tie on a barrel weight. That way you don't have to tie on the swivel or leader if you are feeling extra lazy (not that it is too difficult). I like the weights around 18" up the line so the bait can move around a bit.

Also remember to check for fraying with braid since you have never used it before. Make sure the guides are smooth and keep an eye on the first couple feet of line because they can get torn up a little bit if you are fishing near sharp rocks n stuff.

And remember, don't buy that bullshit commercial dough bait. If you are going for channel cats and want to use commercial stink bait instead of natural bait, the best stuff is the sticky dip bait in the jars and grab the rigs meant for them.

I use both on my rig. No, it doesn't matter for catfish. I use 50lbs braid too. I have 4 poles I keep out and I think 2 use full braid and the other 2 use braid + mono. Mostly, I use braid as backing with a very short amount of mono as a leader for when I'm not catfishing.

Here's what I use.
>>
>>927588
>>927590
>>927592

The rod is a 6'6" medium action. I don't know the size of the reel but I guess its like the standard size. That's why I gave the line rating to give you an idea. It's a GX235. A lot of great info guys. I don't really have much to add but I won't forget what you've told me.

One thing though, isn't a mono backing only necessary on casting reels? I wasn't aware that slippage was an issue on spinners. Mostly a money saving issue, right? In any case, if I experience issues I'll just have to respool it.
>>
>>927561
>>Is the 50 lb braid I bought too heavy?

I'd say so, unless you're after a bunch of trophy class flatheads and blue catfish. You usually want the lightest possible line as it lets you cast further.

So if you're like most fishermen and catching channel and blue cats no larger than 10lbs, then 10-20lbs test will be more than fine.

>>>Do I really need a mono leader or can I just use the braid?

Catfish don't care about seeing the line, so don't worry about that. The reasons for mono leader are usually...

1) It stretches, allowing it to absorb some of the shock when you set the hook or the fish rolls/thrashes. With non-stretchy line like braid, these acts can actually tear the hook out of the fish's mouth and make you lose it.

2) Braid ain't cheap, so if you're changing out leaders and hooks- which you should be doing regularly if something isn't working- then it can get expensive to have to lop off a foot+ of your line every time you want to change leaders. Mono is cheap.

3) Using higher test leader can actually allow you to get away with lighter main line. That means you can cast further with the lighter line, but still have some of that heavy duty stuff at the end to resist abrasion/stress/teeth.

4) Braid is really limp and thread-like and can have a bad tendency to twist itself up into knots and tangles if given up to the wind/current. A foo or two of mono is less likely to do that.

5) If you get snagged on something, the mono will often break before the braid. You may loose the hook, but you'll usually keep the weight, which is usually more expensive. And you can just tie on another leader.

That line is gonna be a bit heavy for the 6'6" M setup but you should be fine. The drag on the reel probably only goes up to like 10lb anyway. You're gonna need to load up on weight for the long casts but you can always go lower in the future if it bugs you that much. 20lb braid is really nice on combos that size and is more than enough strength for any freshwater fish aside from something out of "River Monsters".

And no, the mono backing is just as useful on spinning reels. Braid is slippery and can spin around the whole spool if not done right. Imagine a roll of toilet paper where the cardboard tube stays still while all of the paper spins around it and unrolls. Not a good situation when you have a fish on the line and just can't reel it in because the whole coil of line is slipping around the spool. I did it on a reel once when I didn't use a backing. Before I even took it out and casted, I tried to pull some line out against the drag and all of the line started spinning and coming off before the drag even kicked in.

Some reels will have little rubber strips on the spool that can help grip the braid so you don't have to use the mono backing. I don't think the GX2 reels do though. So tie some mono on really tight, keep some pressure on it and start reeling so the line goes on real tight and covers the knot up and you get a layer or two of mono. Then tie on the braid, I like the uni-uni knot. Keep pressure on the spool of braid while reeling so the line is nice and tight and it should be full when there is about 1/8" of space left on the spool.
>>
>>927608
>#5
>tfw 20lb flouro leaders will break before 15lb flouro main line because flouro ties such shitty knots and braid loses like no strength at all with a palomar knot
>>
>>927612
Please, learn FG Knot.
>>
>>927614

The mono will stretch and give, absorbing some of that shock while the flouro will just eat that stress.

Even then, I still mostly use flouro leaders because I don't feel like carrying around multiple kinds of line and I do occasionally go after fish that are a bit more line shy.

Whenever I can get away with it, though, I don't use any weight when catfishing. Just let the bait drift and watch for when the line starts peeling out. I set my drag looser and just play the fish longer.
>>
>>927608
Great tips!! Thanks a lot man. It all makes sense. I really should have asked you guys before I even went to the store.

>>927612
Alright cool. If I have problems then I guess that's okay because it gives me an opportunity to spool it with a more suitable line. But if all goes well I'll just fish with it and get the appropriate materials in the future. Braid is too expensive to make these mistakes more than once. Anyway, I really appreciate it. These answers are well beyond what I could have imagined or asked for.

>>
>>927620
Uni-Uni works well. I have seen the FG but I can tie the Uni-Uni so well that I never have an issue.

>>927621
I never use anything heavy enough to worry about the shock breaking the braid so I'm good with that. I rarely use leaders anyway but it's for the visibility if anything.

And then dude with the 50lb braid really doesn't need to worry about the shock leader either with that line.

>>927622
I mean only downside to the heavy braid is going to be casting distance and line capacity. Line capacity should be fine because you probably won't cast super far with a 6'6" rod in freshwater and fish aren't going to be pulling much drag on 50yd line. And casting distance, it is catfishing anyway so you probably just need to get some 1/2oz+ weights. It will kill your casting if you do anon's drift bait technique though.

You'll see how strong 50lb braid is the first time you snag it and try to break the line. Be careful pulling on it because you will slice the hell out of your hand if you aren't careful.
>>
>>927631
>Be careful pulling on it because you will slice the hell out of your hand if you aren't careful.

Good point.

NEVER wrap line (especially wet braid) around your hand and try to pull on it. If you need to pull on it, get a thick stick or plier handles or something strong, wrap the line around it a couple of times, then pull on it like a handle.

Also, since most of my catfish were being lost at the bank because of all the rolling they do, I made sure to invest in a landing net.

>rubber strips on the spool that can help grip the braid

When tying your line to your spool there's another knot you use that makes it super tight so it doesn't slip.

First you tie it on using any knot you want, it doesn't matter. Like an Arbor Knot. After that you make 3-4 Half Hitch Knots. That cinches it down and it won't slip around the spool. The Half Hitch Knot is what you use with fly tying. Youtube some hand half hitch fly tying vids to see it. It's super easy to do.

>>927705
You can literally go outside and dig up worms for yourself to start a worm farm. There are many worm farm videos on youtube. Red wiggler (Eisenia fetida) is normally used for composting and is the easiest to raise, but they are rather small and thin (good for trout, carp, and panfish.) You want nightcrawlers (Eisenia hortensis) if you want the large worms for bass or catfish. You can raise them much the same way, but google up "raising nightcrawlers" for better details.

FYI, worms are hermaphrodites and lay eggs. They are basically all, "pregnant".

>>927803
Because it is the best answer usually. Just don't buy any special worm products online. You can use what you have already or some cheap containers from a dollar store/wallmart or similar outlet.

Really? I remember catching nightcrawlers as a kid and they would be mating. You would have two of them come up out of the ground at night and be stuck together.

And I like when memecasters have the holes drilled in the spool because I can just tie it through the holes and it will never slip.

Yes, all earthworms are hermaphrodites. If you want to catch more worms you can try worm grunting.

You can drill your own holes in the spool for knot tying.
>>
>>927853
>May do minnows also

Check your state's regulations. Sometimes you need a special license for it, if you have say over 100 minnows in your possession, "Minnow Dealer License".
>>
>>927856
Yeah I'll probably need it
I already buy a all waters fishing license
And a trapping license

Next year I'm going to get a land trapping endorsement as well as a pest removal endorsement . And a turtle trapping endorsement ( just because turtle soup is good)

So I may as well also get a bait distributors endorsement on my fishing license as well
>>
>>927853
Raising works isn't as easy as it sounds. I tried to do it a couple of years ago and ended up with a Rubbermaid full of dirt and dried up worm carcasses.

I spent around $50 or so on set up. That's 15ish cans of worms.

Not saying it can't be done, just have realistic expectations. It's not just having a bucket full of nightcrawlers forever.
>>
>>927862
Fly tiers may want fur too.

>>927869
It is extremely easy, you just need to do better research and pay attention better. Also, "spent around $50" good god. A couple totes costs like $5 each and is all you need. Better yet, source free 5-gallon buckets from restaurants.
>>
>>927854
That's not nearly as fun as using electricity
>find moist dirt
>get extension cord
>stick metal rod into extension cord
>jam rod into ground
>wait for worms to surface
Easiest way for me was always the soapy water. Put a lil dish soap in a 5gal bucket of water, dump it on a patch of dirt. If the ground is dry, use the hose to get some more water on it.
>>
>>927840
>Really? I remember catching nightcrawlers as a kid and they would be mating. You would have two of them come up out of the ground at night and be stuck together.

Hermaphrodites produce eggs and sperm. Yes, they were having sex. They were impregnating each other and getting impregnated by each other.

Just like in all those Japanese hentai doujin manga sex comics.

It doesn't work that way though. Breaking swivels while fishing is super difficult to do even with cheap ones. You need to be using swivels that are rate far far below the target weights of the fish and your line and hook needs to be rate over that as well. Swivels are rarely ever the weakest link, they are normally the strongest link.

Are you talking about the swivel barrel breaking or the snap for the snap swivel releasing? I've seen snaps like the ones posted in >>927974 & >>927996 pull out, but their swivels were fine. I've never seen a swivel barrel itself break (freshwater experience). The snaps swivels I have are 30lbs and 55lbs.

>>928031
Mine are from China.

>>928060
>>928140
They are made from spring tempered, 302 stainless steel wire, 0.031" dia for the small snaps and 0.045" dia. for the large clips.

I just tried testing one of the small triangle speed clip's breaking weight. The first two tries with 50lbs braided line broke both the line and the needle on my cheap old scale. The 3rd test using wire to pull the clip apart resulted in the clip stretching out and failing at about 48lbs, judging from the still frames in the video I made of it.

Keep in mind that I made these as triangles instead of the paper clip style that are in the commercial "Power Clip" image in >>928060 specifically so they'd be stronger. The force applied is as close to the longest side of the triangle. This helps prevent the levering action that the commercial ones have in their inherent design. The smaller triangle clip is a little bit smaller than the commercial Power Clip version. If I were to use the large diameter wire to make a small triangle speed clip it would far exceed 50lbs test.

I have no way to properly test the larger triangle speed clip that uses the thicker wire.

What brands make servicable, cheap filet/boning knives that come with a sheath? I want one to occasionally prepare store bought fish and slice hunks of cured meat paper thin. When not in use, it'll live in a drawer so I need a sheath to not wreck the edge.

>The Tactical Anglers go for around $12 online for 25-30, more locally.

$0.40 each? Yeah, there's like no way I'd pay for power clips. The wire I use is about 1.02 cents per inch for the 0.031" dia. and 1.84 cents per inch for the 0.045" dia. I could make 20 to 35 for the cost of one power clip. If I did the cost of the power clips math correctly.

Make sure it is "spring tempered" or it will be way too soft. Sell them to your friends for 25 cents each after you get the design right. Warning though, that wire will tear up your tools. Make sure you have a wire sheer like Xuron 2193. It will completely ruin normal side cutters and flatten out the grooves on pliers. Wear eye protection.

Sorry I'm not too much help on the knife buying front. Though keep in mind what you're going to be doing with the knife
You don't need a big 7-9 inch fillet knife for panfish and you won't want to use a smaller knife for larger saltwater game fish
I've actually found that leather sheaths can wreck the edge if they're too tight ( and alot of them are) so be careful

Look into the havalon barracuda replaceable blades and a folding design mean you don't have to worry about it ( it's an expensive knife though)

Or just learn to sharpen well I have some old rapala fillet knife that was made in Finland and I used it for years with it being kind of okay
Then I got into knives /sharpening put a wicked edge on it and went out the next day caught a shit ton of fish and filleted them all
It was so easy so smooth and nice. I couldn't believe it

the game dinner i go to has everything,
poor mans shrimp from my panfish ( i usually give him 2-400 gills and perch
All sorts of salmon all sorts of different ways
cod, black sea bass baked w/ lemon

venison, pork, beaver, black bear, squirrel,
snapping turtle ( that i also help provide) canadian goose, various ducks and sea ducks, wild and raised turkey rabbit

also usualy other stuff that varrys fro year to year, sometimes raccoon, possum , etc ( other shit that trapped) but also more exotic stuff like water buffalo, emu,
i think one year before i started going they had large snake ( not sure if it was boa or anaconda)
Havent had zebra yet but theyre trying to get ahold of some for one of the upcoming years

im sure im forgetting a bunch tbqh
i provide gills and perch for poor man shrimp and am going to start providing snapping turtles for turtle soup, also may start providing other trapped animals if they want them
i also help cook the raised turkeys (fried yum)

So it's like a pot luck thing, sounds realy cool. Is it a church event or some sort of lodge or club thing? How many years have y'all been doing this?
>>
>>928507
is actually only hosted by one guy he preps all the food himself and him and a small handful of others cook it all
he puts on everything on his on property ( 15 acres) for 1-500 people
usually theres a solid 2-300 people there

ive only gone the past 3 years but the old guys i ice fish with have been friends with the owner since he started, and now that im a part of that group i help contribute
in exchange i get free admitance and get to feel like im helping ( plus when i help with the turkeys i always get first shot at the fresh out of the fryer turk

its helpful for the older guys to have younger folks like me around to run around and bring shit from one building to another, to help cook, to help provide food, and to help with things like the bonfire ( i also help do that)
>>
>>928507
>>928512
other than the food i contribute i usually end up incharge of frying turks ( just putting them in and taking them out since the guy who normally cooks them is old and short and cant do it safety)
attempting to get the giant bonfire going
and incharge of checking the ice on his small pond to make sure its safe for the kids to play on it ( and drilling holes incase the kids want to ice fish)

The lathe motor is an old, 35VDC, PM motor salvaged from some old electronic. Electric generator on the exercise bike is from an ancient office Xerox machine. The latter I already made to power other things and recharge small batteries while on the computer.

>>928369
Dremel motors are vastly different. Off brand rotary tools, like those from Harbor Freight have motors similar to this. It could indeed be used for an RC toy.

>>928378

>>
>>928522
it was originally just him and his friends and has now grown to usually 2-300 people
anyone is welcome to show up but theres a $50 entrance fee to discourage people just showing up for the free food
he does raffles at the end of the day, sells squirrel pie, and sells his own home made hard cider

alot of the people that show up are good hard working outdoorsmen while others show up are just degenerates who also happen to like the outdoors so theres always a few drunk assholes who get kicked out quite quickly

i personally dont know too many people there but everyones so friendly you just feel at home ( granted i significantly younger than most at 20 years old but theres always respect there )

Yeah, the first thing I tried was a cordless drill motor, but the electric generator can't power it; too many amps required to even start moving it. A 35watt genny isn't going to do anything for that. I prefer to keep it down to 20watts to prevent things from tearing up.

Cordless drills use a massive amount of amps. Your AC/DC power source for it will need to be very beefy; far more than what most people have. I'm talking something like 18vdc 30-40amps, which is absurd for an AC/DC adapter.

You'd need to source a MOT and 100amp bridge rectifier. You'd need to rewind the secondary coil on the MOT with thicker wire and only enough wraps to reach 18v-24v or whatever your drill needs. Run that through the bridge rectifier and you'll have something like 18-24VDC at 500A-1kA which would be all any cordless power tool would need since they rarely go over 90A when completely stalled. Just don't short it out or get it about 100A output unless you have a beefier rectifier.

Remember to hold one hand behind your back if/when you work on this stuff. FYI, an old AC drill would be far easier and quicker to setup. Just make a jig to strap it to so you can remove it and use it as normal when not powering the lathe.

Battery powered devices are DC and house electric is AC. A normal corded drill will use AC only, while the cordless drill will use DC only. Some types can use both, but those are rare to be interchangeable. They also supply different voltages. Cordless drills use anywhere from 12VDC to 36VDC normally, while corded drills use 120VAC to 240VDC.
>>
>>928551
what about a charger for a laptop, that also has an ad/dc converter, ive go a few old ones laying around i could use
one for example has an output of 19 volts
shouldnt i in theory be able to run an 18.2 volt drill off of this?
with just a minor bit of splicing/soldering?
>>
>>928552
The voltage is correct, however it won't work properly. Even printer AC/DC adapters are great for the voltages needed and have higher amps, but you need at least 30amps, not 1-3amps. As soon as you fire up the drill and it applies torque its amp consumption will skyrocket past the specs of your laptop adapter and burn it out.

No, those are so tiny that I'd need needles to bend them around and it would be cumbersome. I just use needle nose pliers and slip-joint pliers. Though, I rarely need the slip-joint pliers on the larger speed clips. Then the Xuron 2193 for cutting.
>>

Neat might give them a shot some day if I start using clips more. I normally only use them if I'm lure fishing which is rare for me so the store bought ones I have will last another 3 years or more.

i want to set up a cheap old ugly stik ( or two ) as backup salt rods, for light tackle salt fishing for my little cousn to use, for favorite type of fishing ( out waist to chest deep on a sandbar fishing for fluke, sea robin etc,
have a 6 ft 6 and a 7 footer that im planning on using,
i need reels and line to pair with them , wanting to keep it as cheap as possible,
im thinking 10 lb mono but what to have for reels?

also not afraid to throw 2 ounce bucktails with the ugly stiks

also looking for other ideas to keep an extra rod with me when wading ( probably my 8 ft surf rod with a big plug on it if i spot any bait)
>>
>>928859
>waist deep in the water

If you want a sturdy reel that you can take apart in minutes if you get it submerged or covered in sand then you're gonna want a Penn 712z. The only think I'd do is get some ht-100 drag washers and do a bailless conversion with a dremel if you get bail snaps. You should be fine with 10-12 pound mono.

The only one I really have a problem with is the last one because it gets asked like every other thread (or twice in the same one). Not really a big deal just mildly annoying.

Gear is neat though, and little fish are still fun to catch, so I don't see your issue with that.

I'm going to be going to the Tarwin River to look for estuary perch. What do you recommend?
>>
>>929043
Christ start with something a bit easier matey.

If you're deadset on chasing estuary perch then be prepared to put the time into them. 'Enigmatic' is a gross understatement and there's a very good reason that many southern anglers never catch one and probably don't even know they exist.

A fairly basic rod and reel will handle them. 10lb braid, 14lb leader, 7' rod rated to 2-4kg and a 2500 reel will suit. Dropping the leader size will increase bream bycatch, if you're into that sort of thing.
Estuary perch are mostly found around snags - bridges and rock walls will hold them, but most prefer to chase them around fallen trees. Accurate casts are very important, you have to get the lure right in there because the fish will be right in there.

During the day, your best bet is small soft plastics. Grub tails (aka curly tails) are successful, as are prawn shaped plastics. Good starting points are 80-100mm Squidgies Wrigglers and 2.5" Zman Grubz. Zerek prawns have taken their fair share of perch in recent years too. Surface lures (both small poppers and walkers, 50-100mm) work well during low light periods.

Never chased them on bait, so I can't help you there. I'd think that crustaceans (prawns/shrimp in particular) would be the go, fish deep in the water column at the base of snags, or floated into the branches of fallen trees.

Not familiar with the Tarwin so can't recommend any spots there.

Went to check a local lake this morning. Still there's ice, but the rains and SEVENTY FIVE degree weather has the water line 4-6 ices above the ice in all the places I would have been fishing. One guy was Jon boating around and kept hitting still submerged ice under the flood waters. Very odd, but the submerged trees in the area must have it locked down where it can't float up. I about had a heat stroke walking around out there in the humidity. Just a few days ago, the same place had 3 inches of ice and one guy was ice fishing close to shore, but the ice was the wrong color so I didn't waste my time. The rivers are a mess too. They are up a few feet; chocolate water with churning ice.

I'm sitting here with all the windows and doors open and a fan.

This is the worst winter ever for fishing.

IKTF, happens to me a great deal. Especially since I have a few decades to "invent" new things before the internet came along and told me I wasn't the first. Which is nice, because someone else thought it was a good idea too.

This. I always pick up trash when I'm out at waterways and on hikes. I take a couple trash bags along for that purpose. I also don't bring things that turn into trash while I'm out so there's nothing to stow away of my own that I don't need.
>>
I live in a decent community and they the county has a lot of money, but Damn not a single trashcan at a single landing I go to to put in at. I always keep my trash but Damn that's annoying.

A lot of communities start a trash thing for their area but soon drop it after all the costs. A single trash can spot requires a cemented post, a 55 gallon barrel trash can, contractor trash bag (optional), and cable to chain it to the post to help deter theft and animals from knocking it over. Then someone needs to be paid to empty it. People love stealing new trashbags and even trash cans. That's the cheapest method.

The really nice ones are made from cement, have a couple holes on the sides, and require 2 people to lift the lid to remove the trash.

I've seen many communities remove the trash cans and put up signs about packing out your trash. That seems to be the best method without patrolling and/or expense bunker-like trashcans. If you want to help, pick up what you see, talk to your community leaders to put up signs, and perhaps get local groups involved to pick up trash a few times a year.

Found some old ice fishing setups in my grandpas garage. Two plastic palm reel and two little blue rods with wood carved handles.

Even back in the day he knew the Swedish pimple was best ice fishin meme. This thing has probably been tied on this line for around 45 years. Even has a USA made snap swivel.

What do you mean by mini jigging?
Most trout I catch are on small jigs with small plastic

Caught a bass today, and my first crappie.

The palm of my hand still feels a bit sore from the dorsal spines of one of the fish. Is it some irritant that injects you?

No, it's just the fishes slime coat, or you might have a tiny piece of the spine in your hand.
>>
>>929320
You gotta make sure you slide your hand down from the head of the fish and then keep a good grip on it so it doesn't get you.

Just make sure you was your hands well after they poke you, don't wanna end up with an infection.

Always this. The only fish I have problems with are some very young catfish. They have saw-like teeth on the backside of their pectoral fins. When they wiggle the saws sometimes cut into my fingers a little.

>that fishing buddy that git finned by a bluegill, dropped it, got angry, and kicked it with his bare foot...
>those screams

I've never had a dorsal spine under my big toenail, but I have it on good authority it is extremely painful.

Any input on the Shimano Nexave FD Spinning Reel
NOW: $24.98 (58% off!)
Was: $59.99*
They only have 1000 & 4000 sizes. For $25 I'm thinking of grabbing one of each.
>>
>>929373
Do saltwater equipment end up in yard/garage sales the way freshwater stuff does? I get like 5 rods and reels and a tackle box or two for $25. All used, all needing some love, but I can't bring myself to buy new equipment if there's stuff that will work and is 2nd hand..
>>
>>929373
That thing has been on those flash sales for the past month every Thursday. Can't be too bad, it's a Shimano. Their 4000 is fairly big I think so just remember that. 1000 is a good UL/L size for 4lb or 6lb mono.

yes and no. It's Cape Cod, everyone overvalues fishing gear but you can get lucky. We have salt obviously but we also have over 300 ponds on Cape, many stocked w/ trout.
>>929376

That's what I'm thinking. I've got an old cheap rear drag shimano that's been to hell & back and still is great. I'll salt with it to fuck around when I'm bored.

Good question. Never went after shad before, but I was wanting to get some this year.

What works better? Also, not sure what a Kentucky rig is.

Kentucky rig is a drop shot rig with extra hooks along the line. Nothing special. Just use minnow imitation lures.

Also barbless is overrated. You should be bringing long snips to cut any hooks that won't come out. Barbs mean more fish landed and it's easy to cut and change hooks.
