Still waiting for help with the beginner guides on the Pastebin. I put a little saltwater one in there, but I want to do a river one possibly. Skid typed up a saltwater guide so enjoy the autism and CAbaymang just a trout one.

Thinking about picking up a new hobby? Want to get a memecaster? Haven't mastered the Palomar knot? Click here!

Maybe I will tell him I will rent him a room close to saltwater for $100/mo and then when he gets here we can kill him. We will beat him until he is half dead, then spray him with dog pheremones and drop him off in the hood where all the stray pitbulls will have their way with him.

Ayy. Got my ice rods in the mail today

Next I'm waiting for reels to get back in stock

2 rods with different Jiggs on them
One with an ultralight ripping rap
One with a dropshot

Fuck trying to retie anything in below freezing temps when it's windy as fuck
Just swap out rods

I like to keep it as minimalist as possible when jigging
No snaps, no swivels , no split shot
Just the jig and bait. For the fish to see

I never understood why people buy things with large company logos on them.

So other people know that they like a certain large company.

Idk, their logos are pretty cool lookin. I was gonna buy him the one the OP girl has but they only had it in this beige/brown color so I got him the navy blue one I posted. It will go better with his pink Vineyard Vines pants.

Going for trout tomorrow. Possibly smallies too since they're there... but in this cold im expecting the trout to be biting.

Give me pro tips
>>
>>924337
Fish see the hardware is not really the problem most of the time. They are tiny pieces of shiny metal and many lures are just big shiny piece of metal and still catch fishes. Every lure also have metal hooks exposed as well. No way the snap will turn the fish off more than the hook

Snaps downsides are they might hurt action of some lures a little or they catch more weeds and shit.
>>
>>924376
Not 100 percent sure on that
For the past 3 years I've been fishing with one guy pretty often
And he uses snaps to attach some stuff to his line while I tie
Mostly last year I started paying attention to catch rates between us when using identicle bait and very similar jigs. Similar line too pWhen fishing nearly ontop of each other (within 20 ft of each other. Constantly moving holes)
And I very often find myself out fishing him
Not so much with bluegills. But there is a significant difference. I probably catch 2x more perch than him
And crappie usually significantly more

I don't think we're that much of a difference in skill level fishing. So I assume the snap has something to do with it
>>
>>924376
>>924381
I do think part of it is fish becoming hardware shy,. I also think part of it is fish focus on and try to bite the hardware
Instead of the hook
I've seen some fish pick at a split shot 6 inches above a bated hook

>>924381
>>924376
It depends more on size and color of the hardware than just being able to see the hardware. The wrong color can put off a fish or attract it. Try to match your hardware color with your lure color if possible. Another problem can be the profile. If the color of the hardware makes the lure look misshapen then the fish may disregard the lure entirely.

An example is using a large barrel snap swivel that just happens to look like a large eye to the fish, even though you don't really see it as such. An "eye" that large may spook your target fish or even attract far larger fish.

The first thing I do is change hardware color. Normally, there's only silver, brass, and black. Using the smallest hardware you can find or make is also good as it won't impact things as much if it is the wrong color.
>>
>>924390
Even with tiny hardware my ice fishing friend uses ( I do mean tiny)
There's still a significant difference. I've noticed

I'm do a day where I go out and fish 2 rods side by side ( identicle rod, reel, line, hook, bait) but have one with a somewhat small snap swivel. And the other tied on
Rods will be about 2 ft apart and IL fish one with each hand ( tied on my non dominant hand even)
To see if there's a difference
I'd be willing to bet there is a difference. Even if small

they also add a bit weight to the set up which could hinder some baits

>>
>>924645
see I would think of that as a frog bait or giant swim bait.

to me a jig is a.round weight with a hook. you can dress it in feathers or worms or even pork. but they exist to bump the bottom.
>>
>>924468
Those things bug me. Way too complicated and fuckhueg and weigh as much as the bass you would catch on them. Only way I would ever run an umbrella rig would be trolling for trophy fish or something real tryhard like that.

>>924443
And there's like 50 ways I could disagree with this. That's why I don't like generalized stuff like that. Bust mostly it fails to take into account that fish slow down when the water gets too warm.
>>
>>924647
texas rig is imo the improved jig. the weight is above for better control, but the hook still doesnt drag. I have 10 texas senkos on 1 foot leaders in my tackle box at all times.

I only use jigs when I am literally just throwing a weight testing the bottom, or when I am trying to wake them up on the bottom.
>>
Which one for trout? Also got rooster tail spinners.
>>
>>924649
>frog bait or giant swim bait
Well I normally only see actual frog lures as top water. And these really aren't big at all. My favorite is a 3/8 ounce that is smaller than the palm of my hand with a trailer.

>to me a jig is a.round weight with a hook
Well that's really all this is. It just has a skirt and lure too.

>but they exist to bump the bottom.
Ehhh jigs are great because they're versatile. You can swim them or bounce them or just slowly drag them over rocks.

Do you mostly fish saltwater? I feel like there's a terminology difference and neither is wrong to their respective target fishes.

>>924647
If the bottom of whatever you're fishing is rocky then I'd use them. They don't do as well in the mud

>>924653
One of my main problems with jigs is that these man made lakes around here will often have a steep rocky dropoff like 20' from shore and they like to get caught up.

Plus with Texas rigs, if you do the weight setup right, the tails of whatever worm or bait you are using will float up off the bottom a bit and give it great movement. Hard to get that with a jig.

Also with the jigs, sometimes the bass won't grab those big 1oz jigs hard enough and it can be tough to get a solid hook set.

I never fished jigs before and like a year and a half ago the fags here were talking about how great they were so I bought a bunch. Then I finally gave Texas rigs a chance and didn't go back to jigs after that.

>what is a jig jigging jiggaboo jigger?

A "jig" is a lure that is used while "jigging" which is an action of up and down movements. This can be stationary under an ice hole or cast and retrieved. The depth is irrelevant to the core style. A "jig" lure always has a weight so that it will fall at a faster speed than unweighted lures so you can jig with it properly. Which is why almost all jigging lures have a big weighted head.

>>924650
>Bust mostly it fails to take into account that fish slow down when the water gets too warm.

You mean "hot". You live in Florida remember. The chart doesn't go into super cold or super warm temps for water.

>>924657
>>924660
What type of "trout"? Personally, I'd go with an inline spinner with a bare single hook.
>>
Proper names for fishing lures?

Why is it that lures sold in stores do not have proper names? Even a packet of Eagle Claw offset worm hooks doesn't have the word "hook" on the package let alone any useful description of what the hooks actually are other than the size. Like google image search "plastic grub" and you will get tons of pics of these things. Yet, these do not exist in stores around here simply because they are never called "grubs" on the packaging. Instead everyone calls them, "short worms". Store help don't even know what "EWG " or "plastic grub" are, not that I can blame them. Store help are always extremely unhelpful for just about anything since the 1990s.

I never really thought about this until someone (a non-fishermen) wanted to get something for me and I was like "uhhh sure. 3/0 size, offset EWG worm hooks and 3 inch plastic grubs in any sharply contrasting colors". They even wrote that all down, but returned empty handed because none of the packaging had that on it and store help were clueless. When shown images online, the non-fishermen was like, "oh! they had those!"

Maybe it is because so many things are registered trademarked and copyrighted that common place names for things are akin to using "bandaid" for bandages and other companies can't use "grub" in the description. Perhaps, baits are commercialized that using "grub" is "too old fashioned in this modern world" and marketing shows if you call it "Mister Twister Curly Tail Bassageddon" people will buy more of them.

Well, screw it. I'm going fishing with my, "Uber Chickeny Catfishsplotation Devil Hearts" (aka chicken liver) and freeze my ass off in the snow. Wish me luck.
>>
>>924668
>Perhaps, baits are commercialized that using "grub" is "too old fashioned in this modern world" and marketing shows if you call it "Mister Twister Curly Tail Bassageddon" people will buy more of them.

Probably something like this. Or it's because companies don't want to just say "3 inch curly tail grub" since damn near every company that makes lures makes a grub. That way they can market their specific grub.

Same reason rapala doesn't just label their lures "jerkbait, crank bait, top water, ect...."

And most hook packages I've seen do say what they are. I know VMC, Gamakatsu, and Berkly all do.

>I'm going fishing with my, "Uber Chickeny Catfishsplotation Devil Hearts"

I'm back! I was surprised there were so many people there today. Normally there aren't any other fishermen. Out of all the fishermen, I was the only one to catch anything. I targeted channel cats with chicken liver and could barely keep up with my 3 rods in the water. I should have used smaller hooks, they were stealing my bait 90% of the time.

Ice was constantly clogging my eyelets too. Fun times.

Pic fully related, tasty dinks! (channel cat, yellow delicious applesauce from my trees, and sweet corn.) I caught more, but tossed them back for being uber dinks and I already had my limit. I couldn't get my lines out of the water fast enough to prevent more from biting.

That said, any body of water that actually has length/bag limits for channel cats are probably small lakes/ponds that are polluted as fuck though.

>congratulations on your tiny fish.

Thank you!

>none of those are keepaable

There's no size limits on channel cats here, only creel and possession limits. I don't keep anything over 17" or too small to easily fillet. The ones I caught today are the smallest size I keep. They were delicious.

>>924783
I think that creel limits are for waterways that the state manages and/or for species that the state stocks directly into those bodies of water. It also helps prevent commercial harvesting. For instance, no one wants to commercially harvest bluegill that I know, so there's no bag limit. Though, there is a live bait limit, something like 100 minnows without a business/distributor license or whatever that it is.
>>
>>924833
Not only that, but the meat gets all spongey and weird. 18 inches or so is about the biggest freshwater fish I'll eat.
>>
Got no trout today :(
I only saw some minnows in the shallows next to some ice. Surprisingly thats the only fish ive seen in my last 5 trips.
My last guide was freezing up, dealt with it by sticking it the tip on my face/lips and melt the ice every so often.
Any other ideas to avoid this?
>>
>>924898
Same here, half my guides were freezing up, but it only hintered my cast with lures weighing around 10g. Anyway I started just dipping the rod in the water frequently to defreeze it, and then letting it stay down while im retrieving. Air was about -6c but the water was 4c. (Also got no trout today, but I plan on going to a spot tomorrow where Ive caught trout last few weeks.)
>>
>>924901
My other guides were ok, i think dipping in water would make the whole thing freeze up a bit more actually, to just compare our results.
My rod's short enough so that I can just hold the handle and bring the top down to my face. Im guessing thats unlikely for most rods that arent UL.
Good luck with the trout btw
>>
>>924906
>i think dipping in the water would make the whole freeze up a bit more
For sure, I kinda had to keep it down there all the time for it to work in the end.

Im using a 10' rod as I fish on semi-open coast, its not unusual for people to fish with their rods in the water here. It can help keeping lures at the right depth, but ye, today I found another use for it.

And thanks Ill need good luck, those trouts can be difficult in these cold months.
>>
>>924707
Well I appreciate that tid bit, but unfourtantly I do not have a yt channel, the action camera is the next thing I buy, after I build some detachable outriggers to make my kayak more stable in rough waters, then I think my kayak will be finally complete. Customizing is probably one of the best parts of owning a yak in my opinion.

Its -12c right now. (im in eu)

In 2010 I think it was, I had a transit through Miami and it snowed. I think it was the first time it had snowed in Miami in many years and It was in the summer too. So I know it can get cold there (sort of).
>>
>>924957
Idk, in the 4 years since I lived here the coldest it has been was like high 40's (F) and that normally happens 2 or 3 nights a year. Inland it can get a little bit cooler and also hotter during the summer but close to the water it never gets that hot or cold. Fuck that bullshit.
>>
>>924962
Now that I think about it, I realise it was in december it happened, not summer.

The only real problem I have fishing in these low temps is that my index finger freezes after just 10min of fishing. Perfect day for fishing here is grey and windy, so the effective temperature can easily drop to -20c and lower in gusts of wind, which hurts like a bitch since I can only fish with fingerless gloves.

Honestly I'm a twerp and I just fished ok wading with cheap thin waders in 25F

Just takes proper wear- basically layering everything, and I only felt a bit uncomfortable when I waded too long. Don't have neoprenes but I bet I could just do better with another wool pair if socks and maybe another pants

Dealing with snow is another problem I guess but staying comfortable in the cold is easy.

I'd say fuck anything colder than 0F however. At that point you actually need proper wear and at all times
>>
>>925013
The biggest reason I got it was because carp have completely taken over this little spot. There are literally hundreds in this little 1/2 acre (max) spillway and they fux with my bass fishing.

>Does it help with archery skills?
Probably. It's a little different than normal shooting though. You have to aim way way lower than you think because of refraction.

>It doesn't seem like the fish would fight much with an arrow through them.
Apparently the big one do. I've only shot 2 little ones.

It is really fun though. Its a nice challenge and good pest control.

Next time im getting some bootless breathables and a cheap pair of wading boots, and ill just put on some more layers underneath when I need it.

You get to shoot things with a bow, which has the appeal of shooting stuff with a bow.

It's also generally restricted to fish like carp and gar, the former of which is often invasive and potentially destructive to the local ecosystem, and the latter of which isn't particularly in danger of going extinct and somewhat more difficult to take by rod and reel because of its bony/toothy mouth making hook sets in the jaw the difficult.

Whether or not the fish fights depends on the size of the fish and where it was hit. If you get it in a non-fatal area, prepare for a fight, as a fish can generally get put up a bigger fight when you're trying to pull it by the tail/back/side as opposed when you're pulling it by the mouth. Also, you're trying to reel it in without the aid of the rod to assist in pulling/tiring the fish out and a reel that's attached to a bow, which isn't the most ergonomic place for a reel to be.

I don't bow fish, but my friend who's super into archery does. He gives me the carp to use as cut bait for catfish and the gar are for eating.
>>
>>925228
Is gar any good? I wouldn't shoot one unless I was gonna eat it and I've heard conflicting reports on how it taste.
>>
>>925233
It is fine. There's literally no fish that isn't fine to eat. Even carp. People are just stigmatized and prejudiced due to class issues and being subjected to flavorless fish from stores and restaurants.

People who complain are the same types that only eat salads made with ice burg lettuce or fast food.
>>
>>925225

>>
>>925237

Bass Pro stores are sweet because they carry so much stuff compared to Walmart or Dick's, but goddamn their sales suck. I take those surveys a lot because I want to win a $500 BPS gift card and I always tell them that I would spend so much more money with them if they had good sales.

I gotta burn this $40 gift card this weekend too. Debating whether I should put it towards a new UL combo (maybe a $100 setup) or get more lures. I will probably do lures. Yeah inland like Orlando it gets worse. It will get hotter during the summer and cooler at night this time of year.

The Gulfstream here keeps the ocean at such a constant temp so that keeps the air temps very steady and predictable even when cold fronts and hot fronts come through.

Lately with the cooler nights, I will go to work at 5:30am and it will be 70F at my house close to the water. And then I go to my route out west maybe 20mi or 25mi inland and it is like 60F out there.

oh yeah ive seen them mounted that way. be real careful mounting anything into the scuppers. they are one of the weakest spots on a kayak where the seams meet can crack. youd be better off utilizing your rod holders for the deck mount.

I was really looking for something like that Sebilé lure tho. A lipless crank that doesn't rattle. And I wanted it to be a bit smaller too, like ~2" instead of 3"+ like most bass lipless cranks. They only ones that didn't rattle were the XPS ones but they were fairly large like 1/2oz Rat-L-Trap size and then for the best size selection it was probably Rapalas but they all rattle. Oh well. I have a few more of these Rapala rattlers and they are bretty gud.

I wonder if I should ship it to Maglite and get a free one or just buy a new one from Walmart and return the fucked up one with the packaging. I'll probably go to Walmart. This was the Mini Pro LED one too, sucks it broke with like less than an hour of use.

A sound is a wave that is transferred by particles. Since particles are spread so far apart in gas, it takes longer for them to bump into each other and transport the sound. In water, however, particles are right next to each other. This is why sound can travel over 3,280 feet per second in water, but only about 1,083 feet per second in air.

lures that make some kind of noise makes sense.

>>
>>926285
I actually had gloves with me, because I was mainly bow fishing, but they're kind of a pain in the ass to wear and cast with.

And it's not really the cold, I don't mind that too much. I think it's more of everything looking dead around me that puts me in an off mood. I'm not sure if snow would help or make it worse.
>>
>>926225
It's awesome. I love the cold and waiting for spring and knowing the next striper run is going to happen in 3 months is motivating. We got at least 14" so far today but it will be 50 on Wednesday and raining so most of it will wash away.
My biggest fear is the winds will knock down the tree over my truck.
On the + side I rebuilt my dryer today so I've got that going for me.

Also we have scrub pines (which I hate) but always are green. Winter is a time to catch up on all the shit you neglected because you were fishing.

Go with a 6-8 inch mackerel/sardine and fish it a santee rig using a small float trying to maintain equilibrium more than fully floating. Just don't let the bait itself sink to the bottom. I like these offset ones. Maybe you just need to find a good floating worm and it should stand up. Those football jigs and half moon ones don't seem to work as well IRL as they should in theory.

Perhaps use a file, on the head of a jig, to make it flat on the bottom side? You can also slip a sliver of cork into the worm tail to help it sit upright.
>>
>>926993
They already sell tons of them that are flat or football shaped and they never work quite as well as they should. I think finding a floating worm will work better.

I think those little Robo-Worms I bought yesterday are floating. I'm tryin to pair those with some 1/8oz bullet weights on like 1/0 EWG or 2/0 worm hooks for a good finesse presentation. Just sucks with the constant wind around here because the only way to really work em properly is casting directly into the wind.

i never bother arguing because theyre too set in their misinformed ways and he'll just walk away muttering "fucking idiots" instead of listening to reason and viewing evidence or trying to present any evidence beyond "well thats what my grand pappy said they are"

its dacron, usually
low memory and thicker than braid so you can grab on to it
also cheaper than braid

in california, we have Menticirrhus undulatus which is called corbina, and of course some people confuse or mis-spell them to other species of fishes like cobia and corvina
>>
>>927020
i was about to say "it looks like a king fish" but then i noticed they're all a menticirrhus ______
menticirrhus littoralis (gulf kingfish)
menticirrhus saxatilis (northern kingfish)
menticirrhus americanus (southern kingfish)
menticirrhus undulatus (corbina)
i assume theyre called kingfish because the entire family of menticirrhus is referred to as "king croaker"
make of this what you will though
>insert petitition to rename the "corbina" to "california king fish" here

but how anyone could call it a cobia is beyond me

going to be setting up half a dozen jigging rods for deadsticking minnows etc for ice fishing

already have rods/reels picked out But i need to figure out what kind of line will be best,
Ideally il be fishing for anything from trout to pickerel, so i know im going to have to use a leader no matter what ( 3 lb leader for trout and 12 lb flouro for pickerel/pike)
But what should i use as y main line?
was originally planning on 10 lb braid but then figured in the freezing factor
6-8 lb mono? i guess
cant go too heavy because theyre only size 2k reels and small for their size

Kek yeah I made sure to look at all the laws before I started. I knew it wasn't a bass or anything so I wasn't worried about being legally wrong.

I probably won't post it if I somehow manage to fuck up and shoot a game fish.

I have some of those too, I think I snatched them on clearance. I was just trying a bunch of different ones at first. Only problem with those is you can't do a proper weedless setup.

I think this is the one I meant to post.

I also have some football jigheads that are basically undressed jigs with no weed guard. Not weedless but they have more weight to them than most shakey heads and stand up a little bit I guess.

But then with Texas Rigs and Shakey Heads, you gotta be careful going too heavy. Sometimes lighter is better since it will make the bait fall slower and give it a more natural presentation. Plus if you have mud or vegetation on the bottom, a 1/2oz weight will bury itself in it while a 1/8oz setup will probably sit on top.

My state takes fishing so seriously, that carp and freshwater drum are classified as sportfish. Though, they don't have a creel limit. Kinda sucks for some things.

What's a good trout lure to use when a spinner wouldnt work, like in shallow water or where you dont have a lot of room to have the lure to move.

Im guessing something like a jig?
>>
>>927181
Isnt that common tho? What even defines something as a sportsfish too?

The robot worms also aren't very tough
They rip super easy even with just bass
Good action and profile. But not worth it for how short they last
>>
>>927172
You should still be able to make it weedless, you just have to position the soft plastic lure right, so it's level with the top of the bait, but a bait will expose a hook. Let me make some food and I'll see if I can set one up to show you

>>
>>927205
What about some Rapalas? Originals will float and then only dive a foot or two down when you crank em.

>>927217
Not a big deal for me. I just wanted to find some more smaller finesse stuff. With the warm water year-round, even big bass don't always like to go for big 8"+ worms. I recently grabbed some black PowerBait worms that were like 4" with a U-tail and real thin (1/0 or 2/0 hook) and those were working well so I wanted to get something similar.

I have a bag in my car that I throw all my old soft plastics in and when it gets full I'm gonna mail it to Skid because he will make something out of it, probably a dragon dildo.

I need to start throwin Gulps in there too so it smells extra funky.
>>
>>927237
Like I've had one bass totally trash them
And they aren't super cheap

How small do you want to go? I like fishing small 3-5 inch worms if I can find them
>>
>>927206
Some states have special rules for sport fish/game fish that protects them. Anything that isn't on that list normally doesn't have any laws for how you use them (except endangered stuff.) Thus, no creel limits on sunfish.

They are protected in order to ensure long term tourism for fishing.

We have creel limits on even common carp, but they're at 25.

Im sure this is because they dont want places completely fished out. I dont see why you would allow someone to take that much fish out of a single body of water.
>>
>>927243
Idk, that 4" seems straight. I could probably even run the 3" curly tail grubs on those 1/0 EWG hooks but any smaller and it might just sink into the mud or other shit on the bottom.

I saw some ~4" senko type stick worms at Bass Pro but I'm not a huge fan of those on Texas rigs or shakey heads because they don't have the same action. Only reason I ever bought Senkos was for wacky rigs.

And I think those Robo Worms were like $4.50 or $5.00 for a pack of 15 or however many were in there. It's not too bad.
