Previous Thread:
>>884133

It's about that time of year where the anons up north are in limbo because the water is getting too cold for regular fishing but not cold enough for ice fishing. And I'm just down here waiting for the water to cool off a few more degrees so the bass get moving again.

Still waiting for help with the beginner guides on the Pastebin. I put a little saltwater one in there, but I want to do a river one possibly and trout.

Pepsi what are the average water temps in the ocean for any given time of year (average winter, spring, summer, fall temps) and air temps?
>>
Should I put a plastic on a chatterbait or just run it raw?
>>
>>886356
I normaly run a little trailer but I don't think it will make a huge difference. The action of the lure and skirt itself is plenty. Rawdoggin is always fun ;^)

>>886351
Idk, the Atlantic is real warm around here all year round because of the Gulfstream. Like 80s most of the year but don't quote me on that. Air temps in with winter are mid-high 70s during the day and like mid 60s at night with a handful of cold nights into the 50s. Summer temps are mid-high 80s in the day and mid-high 70s at night.
>>
>>886318
Had a dog that looked just like that, hurts bad man.

>posting your phone number

Has anyone been ice fishing with the hut and all that? Thinking about doing it this winter but will have to travel for it and not sure if it's worth it. Do trout hit more or less when the lake freezes over?
>>
>>886366
Good to know
I looked online immediately after I realised "why am I asking cpl.nosalt about the ocean?" And found it dips to about mid 50s and peaks mid 80s in the water so I think the Rio fly line I'm looking at will be good

Shooting head fag, does line temperature rating refer to water or air? How far outside the rating could I push? I've changed my mind on just 15 feet of 50 mono line to grab then 40 braid for the rest, I think I will just do straight Dacron for 100 feet or so that is about .025 inches maybe then some thinner braid for backing (maybe I'll see if I can call up my local bait shop and only spend a little bit for 150 feet of heavy power pro, maybe some #80 hollow ace for that seamless loop or something)

...and forgot pic

But mid 70s is the coldest it gets around here. But this area in FL, like just north of Miami to around Palm Beach is where the Gulfstream is right on the coast. I have mentioned it before, it's like a river if you go float out in the ocean and you will end up a ways north if you don't pay attention.

It's a 4 piece reddington path. I believe it's a 5 weight. I got it in a bundle with the reel, case, and all. I'm sort of new o fly fishing so I don't know a whole lot. My next investment is going to be one waders, especially since it's starting to cool down now. Eventually I'd like to get a better rod and definately a better reel.

Florida.

The International Game Fish Association is right next to my local Bass Pro.

But seriously, anywhere that it gets cold is shit for fishing. The freshwater fish don't get as big and you can't fish year round. Florida is easily the best saltwater fishing too (not that I would know anything about that). West of the Mississippi isn't known for shit as far as fishing until you get to the Pacific and if you want trophy freshwater you need to go to warmer states, like Kentucky and Virginia south. I do love fishing in Northern WI and MN but FL rapes em.

>Fishing & Tackle Secret Santa

-around a $20 budget for gifts
-email GetSomeMemes @ gmail with shipping info and what kind of fishing you do
-don't use a burner email, because we will have a deadline some time in December and at that point I'm going to email everybody back to make sure they are still on board to buy gifts
-after that I will randomly draw names and email everybody with an anon to buy gifts for so they can order right off their favorite tackle website
-once you have bought gifts for your anon, feel free to email me back with an order confirmation so we know everybody is getting their gifts, and I could possibly even send anons tracking #s for their gifts
-if any anons flake out and receive gifts without buying anything for their person, enjoy the constant pizza guys that show up and stacks of gay furry porn that Skid will mail you. I hope it was worth saving the $20.

If you're ultra paranoid and afraid that one anon will have your address, then don't even participate. You don't even have to include your real name if you don't want. We're just trying to have a little fun with the holidays.

Do I have to be black to fit in down there? Was thinking of moving around Orlando but decided to stay up north. Then I thought of moving to Louisville but I went by there once while working at it was a cesspool. Currently staying in a condo in Virginia Beach. I want a rural /out/ paradise with a body of water to fish from that can compete with the rivers we got here. No little dinky lakes or ponds make me happy. Can't afford to live here in a house with land unless I want to live in a trailer. Only got $200K.

No. You could be Dominican or Cuban or Puerto Rican or Jamaican with lighter skin.

This just in. Cover never changes and neither does the layout of the lake!

>thinks bass is for people who don't really enjoy fishing and just want to be seen
This is dumb and an opinion.

All your points are just "look at me I'm a REAL fisherman because I don't need any fancy electronics." If you wanna handicap your fishing go right ahead, but don't pretend like you're a better angler than someone who uses a fish finder.

Btw I have never used a fish finder in my life
>>
>>886554
Yeah freight does suck down here unless you can get a good local job. Just stay in like GA or TN. That's probably where I would go if I left FL and didn't want to deal with Chicago winters.

Let's be honest here. The only real fishermen out there are salties. Freshwater fishermen are consumerist whores that have a mental addiction to buying lures.
>>
>>886575
+1 I agree anon
>>
>>886575
Eh it's hard to call a flyfisherman consumerist
He may have over 200 dollars worth of fly tying materials on a bench in his basement but it would cost 6x that to buy his flies
>hooks are $3/100
>thread is $2.50 for 50 yds
>a pheasant tail feather is about 50¢
>lead wire is $5 for 50 yd
>those combine to be sold as a $1.50 pheasant tail
>after selling 10 flies you've paid for your material and made profit
>keep the other 90 flies for yourself, they cost you nothing
>>
>>886585
>spend another $500 on a decent rod >$200 for decent reel
>hundereds on flys
>hundreds on waders, clippers, line, vests, etc..

>can catch the same fish with a $50 Walmart spinning combo

California is pretty good but I'm biased because I haven't fished outside the state except a few times in Oregon.
>Shore fishing along the entire coast
>Rockfish, lingcod, cabezon, a half dozen types of perch, striper, halibut, jacksmelt, corbina, bonito, mackerel. Different types of fish depending on how far north or south you are.
>Several types of sharks and rays that put up a great fight.
>There's also a lot of offshore fishing for tuna, deep sea species, salmon, yellowtail if you're into that.
>Rivers from the Oregon border down to the Sacramento river system have chinook and steelhead runs.
>Sierra Nevada mountains have rivers and lakes with brook, brown, rainbow, golden, and cutthroat trout.
>tfw catching a limit of brookies out of a lake at 11000 feet and cooking them for breakfast.
>Delta and reservoirs have a lot of big bass.
It definitely has variety, I'd put it on the same level as Florida in terms of overall good fishing.
>>
>>886578
> get out to the beach early in the morninf
> cold as fuck
> condition is calm, no wind, high tide
> baitfishes, look like smelts, being pushed to the shore, can literally see them swimming 3 ft away from shoreline
> perfect halibut condition other than the temperature being a bit too cold and cloudy sky

Throw my memecraft flashminnow for 4 hrs and only managed one small halibut but keep getting hit by big ass jack smelts. I landed like 5 jacksmelts but a lot of them don't get hook up because they got small mouth.

at least I didn't get skunked. I expected some more halibut and even a wsb with that kind of condition. Oh well. I should tried keeping some jacksmelts and see how they taste like. I heard they are decent. I didn't bring my bucket though since i usually just keep it in the car and haul the legal halibut or wsb back to it if i ever get one ( only fishes i usually keep)
>>
>>886590
>implying most flyfishermen ever spend more than 250 on a combo for anything other than salt

Let's even say this fly fisherman spent 2k on his rod, reel, waders, lines, and flies
That's still 1/10 what the bass fisherman's boat costs
>>
>>886592
i would say florida is a bit better since they have bigger and stronger fishes year round. They also don't have drought that can fuck up freshwater fishing for years. However, the weather is definitely not as comfy for fishing. The inshore of florida is also more interesting as well. The baitfishes that run inshore in florida ( bunker) is basically the size of normal catch of california regular fishes like croaker/perch/jacksmelts. Even florida's bonito, mackerel, and barracuda get bigger than ours.

I live in socal though, which is slightly behind northcal in term of fishing. We don't have stripers here. However, i guess we have more opportunity to take outshore fishing trip to baja for exotic species. I never had the opportunity to fish outshore, one day.
>>
>>886598
$20K is 1/3 of a bass boat

They care more about shiny brand name stuff than functionality and enjoyment of just fishing. Gotta show off their boat trailers with spinners on the rims and jacked up F150 full of bumper stickers showing how consumerist they are. They spend more time blocking the boat ramp telling people how awesome their setup is than they spend fishing.

>>
>>886604
I got into it for under 100 bucks a combo and I can double haul my 25 dollar 8 weight line 80 feet and still turn over a 9 foot 2x leader with a chunk of couch foam on the end and trust my budget combo enough to take it to the ocean
>>
>>886617
Ok? Good for you I guess? I could still catch the same fish with a bottom of the line Walmart combo
>>
>>886622
Thats true of a lot of fish
A 25 dollar Walmart catfish combo can handle a 5 foot ray in the ocean
The 20 dollar Walmart fly combo can still catch trout
The 3 dollar spool of zebco line works
But none are as pleasant as quality equipment

New Jersey
I'm clueless and this is my home state, and I sometimes assume NJ is really shitty but it's just cause I'm central jersey and not north or south.

But I have to say we got a lil bit of everything freshwater and then an amazing coast.

Also some huge lakes but nothing great lake size unfortunately. But hey have fun going saltwater anywhere in Michigan etc

Also just the right temp, hot summers and cold winters but no extremes (sometimes we get blizzards and sometimes we get +100F heat)

I suppose cold winters opens up with ice fishing as another opportunity, to explain.
>>
>>886596
I've eaten a lot of jacksmelt, they taste great if you put some effort in. I usually get some oil heated up, throw the filets skin down on the oil, let the skin get real brown, flip them, hit the other side with some high heat for a minute, then flip them back, put a little salt and some crushed garlic on em, and then put the lid on and let it cook on med-low for another seven or so minutes. One thing you should be prepared for is that almost every jacksmelt has 1' long worms in it that can be kinda unsettling. Almost all of them are on the internal organs, but there will be one or two in the meat that you want to dig out with a knife. That's why I filet them to make the meat nice and thin so that it heats up all the way through.

big ass parasite like worms are scary but not harmful to human once cooked so im not too worried about that. Chemical contaminants are scarier even and they are invisible to plain eye since they can't be get rid off during cleaning and cooking proccess.

Jacksmelt are pretty low on contaminants if i remembered correctly so that's why i'm interested. The ones I caught today are good size and seem pretty meaty. I heard some people said that they taste better than mackerel and the meat is a bit less fishy.

check out some discount fishing places for a running line. gander, overstock ect.. dacron is fine to use just get a fatter diameter to save your fingers and remember about those knots slamming your stripper guide. itll knock the rings out your guides if you dont make them thin enough.

youre welcome bro. and yeah the bodies shape give it the waggle. slow retrieve gives it the best waggle. but when theyre bustin on top Ive had good luck with them using as a skip jig. cast and dragged fast across the surface like a escaping chovie for pelagics. in shooting lines? the tapers are different than the usual steelhead/salmon shooting lines (skagit ect..) and the sw coatings are more uv resistant.

>>886711
depends. from the bank, toss them and drag them back work them like a jerk bait. twitch twitch pause retrieve. lots of hits on the drop. on the boat I like to cast and rip them or yoyo them with slow jigging methods. depends on your quarry.
>>
>>886714

That's the plan with the hollow ace
I'll probably phone them up and say "hay do you have power pro hollow ace in x lb test ? Would you mind packaging up 150 feet and mailing it to me in Ohio if I pay shipping and a little extra per yard? I know its a weird request but its not in Ohio and I don't want to buy 3 times what I want minimum "
And I'm 200% sure they'll say yes
Or maybe I can harass pepsi, he knows I'm good for paypal. Just give him a little extra for the added effort

Idk, I mean the bass should be coming up a little bit more shallow and be active and feeding so they can bulk up. But if the water is already cooling off a lot, the deeper water might be warmer and more comfy.

Like I said, I'm in FL so everything is upside down. I usually have a lot of luck right at sunset but the past week or two with slightly cooler weather it seems like I hit stuff an hour or two before sunset and then it dies off.

L like mackerel as well, especially the smaller green jack mackerel. One of the best fish preps I did was I put a few jack mackerel in a pan with some butter and salt on em, and stuck em in the oven, they turned out great. At the same time I've had some big pacific mackerel that turned out terrible, maybe I should have filleted those.

I don't even know which mackerel i ate. i think it was the pacific mackerel. I caught them off the pier.

Gonna head out again later in the evening. Hopefully, the bait fishes run yesterday attracted some big halibut near shore. If the wind is too rough( they usually are in the evening) i might just throw some spoon or bucktail/fluke dropshot instead of memecraft sp

>>
>>887024
Also how do you work a lucky craft lure off a pier
>>
>>887027
You don't use lucky craft off a pier. You need to be in low ground to use crankbait. I only use it for the surf. You can also use it for bay/ harbor or jetty but I'm too scared to lose them there with so many hard structures. Use spoon, dropshot, swimbait, or hi- low at the pier. I also use a pseudo dropshot hi low when i use the bucktail as the weight and have a line with super fluke above that. You can also use bonito bubble splash rig at pier if you want to catch bonito.
>>
>>887029
Ok good I thought I was missing something on The crankbait.

I've heard of that rig where the terminal weight is a swim bait on a heavy jig or a buck tail with a plastic a foot or so above. There's a name for it but I forgot lol

I'd love super slick 8 but it only comes up to 80 and I'm not sure .017 is thick enough to grab

Best rod for catfishing imo and it's cheap.

I've been using GX2's for years catching cats. Biggest was a 67lb flathead in 2013. See all these people carrying huge saltwater rods and Ugly Stik Tiger rods.

I'm 22 and have been fishing regularly since I could walk and have only witnessed 1 break in my life time, and it didn't really break but it was a 2 piece rod that came apart while netting a big cat.

They aren't good if you prefer fast action though.

Don't use a split shot. Different blade shapes run at different depths or you can run flourocarbon line and that will make it run deeper.

Dick's has sales on the LiveTarget ones all the time. There are some bigger bluegill and crappie ones.
>>

Not sure about this, but the splitshot is probably attached to get longer cast or to reach deeper in the water. It depends on the lake so can't tell you what to do, try some different stuff out and see how people around you are fishing.

>tfw not making a living off YouTube fishing and shilling products because I'm too ugly and autistic
>>
>>887332
Even if you were good looking and charismatic you wouldn't be able to

The market is saturated

Best thing you can do if you want to get paid to fish is become a guide
>>
>>887339
And even that's saturated.

Every weekend fisher here has some "guide serve" printed on his truck and boat. They don't even teach you how to fish. Just takes you to a honey hole to get a bunch of dinky bass and perch. Fun for the kids I guess.

It doesn't take much to get sponsorships on YouTube. Especially in a niche market like fishing, you don't need a ton of subscribers to make money. I'd say once you hit 5,000 subs, you'll start getting offers. They won't be much but it's a start. I have a friend that posted hiking videos. After only a few thousand subs he started getting inquiries about shilling products. Now all he mostly does is product reviews or day hikes shilling some product. Quite annoying, but it pays well.

It really depends on your intentions though. Steve Douglas only has 42K subs and makes a living off YouTube with product sponsors. Then there's channels like Catfish and Carp that has double the subscribers but doesn't really shill anything and just uploads videos as a hobby.
>>
>>887340
If I was going to go be a guide I'd go to the ocean and see if a charter boat captain needs a deck hand then go from there
Being the captain sucks; you just drive the boat
The deck hand gets to do the rigging and catch the bait, help land the fish, and actually teach the clients
Or just do all his work by himself
I may be weird but I like the intricate rigs on big bait
Rigging is fun imo
>>
>>887340
I definitely thought it would've taken more subs to make money like that

Flukemaster and 1rod1cuck must really be bringing home a decent amount

Still kinda shitty though as you'll have to buy your own health insurance which is expensive as fuck especially if you have a family to support and there's no benefits like a matching 401k, paid time off, etc

You've really got to stay putting out good OC or you're fucked
>>
>>887341

If you're younger than 60 you'll get taxed 10%, you'll lose 20% for withdrawing it in the first place, and when you're retired and need the money you won't give one flying fuck that you bought saltwater gear.

https://www.wellsfargo.com/investing/retirement/tools/401k-early-withdrawal-calculator/

WIth as much as you spend on freshwater gear there's no reason you can't save up a bit of cash by not buying it for a while.

I found an ad in a bulletin board for cleaning out a guy's garage. Job didn't pay nothing but could keep anything I wanted. Said there was a ton of fishing gear among other things.

I get there and it was nothing but garbage Walmart/K-Mart tier crap with spincasters that's old and dry rotted. I did get a few folding tables and got a generator running though. But sad I didn't find anything good that they thought was worthless.

I'm walking out of a Walmart as we speak right now. This one probably had the best fishing selection of any I've been too. Or at least the most well-stocked. So many of them are all picked through but this one actually had 1/4oz bullet weights in stock.

No $1 Zoom baits. But they had a couple 150yd spools of 14lb FireLine for $7, I might come back and do some shopping this weekend. Also these tiny Yum baits, it's hard to find real small panfish stuff. The bigger Mayans can hit smaller Rapalas but sometimes they won't do it and will only take real tiny shit. These were like 3/4" long.

>>

What do you do?

I usually set a few pyramid traps (use mullet I catch in the cast net for bait) around the dock in the salt marsh then I'll take a canoe out and cast net for shrimp and come back a few hours later and pull up the traps and they'll be full of blue crab
>>
>>888223
It's not much money at least. Only $25 and that other Camillus fixed blade was like 5" and only $10. I probably won't actually get a machete but I wouldn't mind something a little larger for my tackle bag. That Kershaw is 4.25" or some shit like that and it would be cool to have a good 6" blade in there but I'm not trying to spend $150 on an Esee or Ka-Bar as much as I wish I had that money to waste.

Stopped by a local lake for an hour or so and didn't get shit today. I think I should've gone later a little closer to sunset. Plus that lake is kinda overfished but I didn't feel like driving far in traffic.
>>

When running big and heavy baits for big bass, it can make it easy for them to shake it.

I'd like to see that Spooltek company put that design into some other baits for freshwater fishing. I wonder if they could design a weedless crawdad or something.

>crabbing year round in the NE?
Not on Cape Cod, haven't seen one since late August/early Sept
>>
>>888341
Depends how you rig them. If you set the hook on Texas rigs correctly, they are much more difficult for bass to shake than a crank bait because of how the weight slides up the line. But then Texas rigs can also be tricky to set when you get a bite. Switch it to a jighead instead and you will get a better hook set but it is much, much easier for the fish to shake it loose.

>>888343

>>888355
Nah, that isn't what we're talking about with the Spoolteks. They have a retractable leader that comes out so when the fish bites, the hook comes out of the lure and the fish can't use the momentum and weight of the whole bait to shake it loose.

>>888362
Did you get the tongue or what?

>>888368

>>888390
It tightens up and then gets loose after some use or what? If that's the case, then clean it off and go for the Loc-Tite. Otherwise be careful and don't break something more trying to torque the fuck out of it if you don't know what you're doing.

>>
>>888433
>I know there has to be a bunch.

Maybe in Florida. I've never seen a show just for fishing in DFW. I know there's a big one in Houston I might try to go to one year. We have a bunch of gun shows up here though. There was 2 in October and one two weekends from now. I'm surprised the local businesses haven't tried to arrange a small one.
>>
>>888437
I know we had multiple ones in IL around Chicago. I can't remember if they were both just fishing shows, they might have been outdoors shows. But they had one every winter at the horse track right by my house up there and then at least one more at a convention center right by O'hare.

There has to be a bunch around here though because it is a huge metropolitan area with tons of sport fishing.
>>
>>888446
I guess more people are into hunting/shooting here than fishing. It would make more sense in Houston since it's by the coast. After I win the lotto I'm gonna have a winter house in Florida.

Looks pretty good, the only patterns I would add is pheasant tails (trout are selective feeders, and surprisingly often will turn down a size 8 stonefly nymph in favor of a size 14 mayfly nymph)
And I'd get some small foam ants, beetles, and/or spiders for panfish, and those micro splitshots (they come in a little rotary container in carrying sizes, I'd get up to 4 grams down to 1 gram, and that will cover most of your splitshotting
If you need multiple splitshots space them out so the lightest I'd closest to the fly and the heaviest is far away to turn over more easily. Make sure they're 6-8 inches apart and use the minimum weight you can get away with)
Then fir tippits id get a 9 foot 0x or 1x, that will be 10-14 lb for smallies, a 9foot 3x or 4x, that will ve 6-8lb for triut streamers, and bigger nymohs/flies (14+), then id get 9 foot 5x or 6x ((3-5lb) for panfish and small nymphs (14-)
And id advise either investing in tippet rings (here's a vid on them https://youtu.be/NFTrjx98P3s ) and tippet material or tying your own tippets (that same channel has good info on that topic; blood knot, improved blood knot, and perfection loop)
Either one will save you money in the long run

Well there are tapered leaders and tied leaders
the difference should be obvious
The tippit you have is tapered buy I've got no idea what size it is
Tippits are measured in x ratings (1x 2x 3x 4x) and so on to about 8x with about 1lb breaking strength
In the tapered leaders the tippit is about the last 18 inches, on a tied leader its the last sections
What I'd reccimend for now is either buying a tippit kit (it will have all the materials you need to make tippits as well as formulas and just replenish everything as nessesary)
Or buy tippet rings, tapered leaders, and matching tippet spools then do like in the video and cut 12-18 inches up, put on a tippet ring, then tie the tippet back on
So like buy a 1x tapered leader, a 3x, and a 5x then buy a 30 foot spool of 1x, one of 3x, then one of 5x and as you run out of tippet from cutting and tying flies on cut the old tippet at the ring and put on new tippet
Tippets are easily the most complicated part, along with line
