Idk, they started moving a little bit more lately so I have been getting them on shit besides Texas rigs. I think the last time I was out on Sunday, the largemouth hit the Mepps and peacock grabbed that 1/8oz chatterbait. And the weekend before that I got a nice lil largemouth on an X-Rap. I think pic related was last week and can't remember if he took the chatterbait or what.

I got like 4 fire tiger ones in different sizes, a big gold one, and two perch/baby bass color ones.

Smashed the plastic (although this one was some weird plastc shit) off the front of my surface lure. What are these called so i can pick up a few from ebay?

Also, fishing in a fast flower canal in Australia.Think I should be going for surface or diving lures? new to fishing, having only every used bait. Much prefer to the constant casting. Been aiming my baits for the backside of a small bridge but no luck this arvo. But it was incredibly windy and quite bright.
>>
>>889076
I'd definitely go sub surface unless the water is real calm, I'd say run an inline like a mepps past any breaks in the current or a curly tail grub on a jig in slack/seams where there's less current

cheers dude. Made the right call today then. Was pretty tough going. Not the best at casting at the best of times, but with a strong wind going in the oposite direction to the current it made things tough.

Trying against first thing tomorrow morning. Might try a little further down. THere's a sharp bend in the canal which looked a little calmer when i drove by.

Probably doesn't help that the rivers are still flooding. Dropping, but still up a few meters.

Pelican don't give a fuck.
>>
>>889119
I'd try near that bend, I know in the states predators like bends for some reason, I think its because the water on the outside is moving faster than the water on the inside so they can watch the turbulent water for disoriented bait
Just try to cast about 1-2m up stream and a few meters past the cover you're targeting so the current pushes your lure back towards the cover and it has Time to get down
I'd probably try running a heavy jighead with a curly tail grub if the water is high
Good luck

If I wanted to switch out my trebles for single hooks, what size should I go? I don't want to go too big and fuck up the action, but I also don't want to go too small so they can throw the hook easily.

I can't answer your question but I do have one of my own. What are you trying to accomplish?
>>
>>889237
Sometimes trebles are a bitch to get out when multiple hooks are involved and I don't have my plyers. It's easier to keep a fish hooked on a bigger single hook. I've noticed on jerks or longer baits if the fish is turning a lot during the fight the hooks can get snagged on the fish's body, which does a lot of damage to the fish if he gets snagged early on. Also, I think it would make the lure less snag prone on lay downs and the like.

Hey guys I do a lot of surf fishing in inlets but I'm about to go surf fishing on a regular beach in South Carolina. I have a few questions because it's a little out of my normal mode. I aim to target redfish, should I use my 5foot 6 flounder rod or this 7 foot 6 surf rod? Also, what type of bait and rig should I use?
Thanks in advance friends.
>>
>>889251
You really want at least a 9', preferably 10-11' if you need to toss a distance. That said I've used my 7' but mainly near channels.
You can get a Penn Pursuit or similar for under $80 for a 10'/8k reel. I kept the reel for a backup and swapped on a 6k spinfisher and it works great for the $ spent.
>>
>>889264
Can I get by with my 7 foot 6? I don't really have the funds to buy a new rod since I'm already saving up for a new inshore combo. Also what kind of bait/rig? Thanks for your help comrade

Nah, there are some inshore saltwater trout.

This reminds me, I would love to find a knifefish.

And look at the catfish, I guess we don't have many. I wonder if the white catfish is a channel cat. And I have never gotten a bullhead down here, and if they are around they should've grabbed a nightcrawler when I use those. The species do change a bit though between the north part of the state and further south.

Inline or traditional spinner?

Mepps a best for inline spinners. The Blue Fox Vibrax are good too if you really want to make some noise.

For regular spinnerbaits, Terminators are really good but expensive compared to others. All of the Strike Kings seem to work well and they have cheaper ~$4 Banshee ones and then some $7-$10 ones like the KVD line. I don't even know what brand most of mine are. I use the Booyah Pond Magic ones a bit and those are nice along with most other Booyah stuff.
>>
>>889152
Thanks for the advice. No luck however. Either the water is just moving too quickly, or my lure is too big for what fish are in there.

It should be fine for murray cod, they'll hit, apparently, any sized lure. But I'm not sure about golden perch or red fin.

I tried retreiving the lure very slowly, thinking that becauce it's fairly cold, the fish might not chase too fast. Tried going really fast. Normal speed too. Tried pausing, flicking the rod in different ways. Nothing.

Might try bait next weekend, but I generally don't like that kind of passive fishing.

Soon as the water goes down a bit (the river, rather than the canal) I'll give surface lures another go. It's a bit tricky getting to decent spots currently.

But, at least I'm a lot more accurate casting now. Still pretty shocking, but i've got it down to a decent sized cone. Distance is still lacking in both reach and accuracy. But both days have been fairly windy which might play a part.

Gonna try a bait caster setup. Should be something interesting to learn anyway.
>>
>>889397
>>889403
If you are talking about regular spinnerbaits (not inlines) I wanted to add this:

I have had issues with cheap inlines before, but cheap spinnerbait seem to perform fine. The durability might not be the best on them but the blades still spin well and everything else unlike some cheap inlines.

Just make sure you go with the right colors, weight, and blade type.

Where you at? Vic? Sa? River is too fast flowing and too murky to bother with lure fishing to be honest and it's still on the rise. Was going to have a few days off work for the Cod opening season on Dec 1st but it kinda seems pointless now. All these lures are just collecting dust atm :'(

Nope. Compare the mouths and fins, and you'll see they're more similar to red drum and croaker than they are to a rainbow trout or salmon. They even make the croaking sound.

Golden Perch (we call them Callop in SA for some reason) are greedy cunts and will go anything due to their big gob, they are always a bycatch when targeting Murray Cod mate.

It's ok, but not great. Definitely not a fish I'd be targeting if all i wanted was a meal.

Southern NSW. Deniliquin if you know the area. Bout 75km from echuca.

Fishing on the Edward River or Mulwala canal. Not really a keen fishermen in the past, but I've just had the urge the last ew weeks. Finding it a lot more fun nowadays.
>>
>>888996

do they take off their tops to help attract the fish?
>>
>>889449
Never tried it myself but a bloke here in Renmark breeds them up in a farm and sells them to restaurants, keen to try one. Heard of Deniliquin but never really fished in NSW, if you don't count fishing on the Vic Murray river side technically. You should go to Lake Mulwala if you're so close, fucking HUGE Callop in that.
>>
>>889429
Well shit, never thought of it like that, lucky catching a Cod on a lure is rare as fuck here.
>>
>>889458

I finally woke up early and got out fishing, and ended up at this clear water lake with the peacocks and largemouth that always blueballs me.

The peacocks just spawned. I have seen a couple giant schools of fry with two adults swimming with them. I was casting this underspin with that chartruese yum thing on it and they would just charge at it but not really bite it. So I ran it faster and finally hooked one. Landed a nice ~16" fish (which is def better than a 16" largemouth) and those fuckers are feisty so of couse as soon as I lipped him and took out the hook, he got free before I could take a pic. Dammit.

I have this one that I run mostly for sneks and have gotten a lot of bigger bass on it too. Sneks have really thick skin around their mouths so it is a bitch to unhook them but even after a ton of casts through mucky canals and rocky shorelines and some big sneks, it is still going strong.

I'm gonna be down by the beach later this afternoon/evening too. I mean I'm already like 5min away but will actually be in the sand so maybe that will make me want to go back tomorrow.

I went out this morning and got that peacock but left after not too long. I think this afternoon before I head to the beach I'm gonna go back over to the area I got that big snek, peacock, and largemouth last Sunday.

Hey y'all. Pretty new to fishing here and I'm hoping someone will be willing to offer some sage advice.

I want to try targeting a fish I have never targeted before; Yellow Perch. I'll be fishing a medium sized inland lake in south east Michigan with depths from 8-38 feet. There are a lot of areas with heavy weedy cover as well as some submerged logs. I'm planning on going out in a few days before the sun rises to fish all day until after the sun sets. Weather is looking like it'll be sunny, around 60 degrees, and 13 mph winds. I'll be fishing from a canoe.

What bait/lures should I be using for targeting perch? What depth should i stick to? What is your favorite perch rig (pics would be greatly appreciated). Any other general tips you can offer a newbie?

Never specifically targeted yellow perch but have gotten a few before. I bet you will have some good luck jigging. Get down on some of those white PowerBait 2" Curly Tail Grubs and ~1/8oz jigheads and bounce them or swim them near the some structure. Those white grubs kill it for panfish and small bass.

>>

Circle hooks are great for fishing with live/dead bait since you can avoid gut hook and you don't really miss hook up since the fish will hold real bait in their mouth longer.

circle hook on lure is possible, but you will limit yourself to slow retrieve and presentation. You also will miss more hook up, especially on hardbait. You should never really gut hook while fishing lure anyway

However, there is situation to call for circle hook on lure, such as tarpon fishing when there will be long fight and tarpon can jump and headshake very hard. Circle hook will decrease the chance of the fish throwing the hook, and that's a good enough trade off for worse hook up rate for some people. Tarpon is also lazy most of the time and prefer slower presentation anyway from what I've read about them.

>>889637
was anything else hitting in capitola? were macs around? I need lingcod bait. i'll probably hit buoy 3 on my yak and stock up baits this week unless i go crabbing.

>>889679
you can use them for bait. hook them in back of the dorsal fin, they always want to swim down to the bottom so if you keep them just off the bottom theyre always struggling to swim down. do the same for shiner perch you catch. bring a bait rod and a rod to toss lures and your covered.

>>889700
dont waste your time with circle hooks on those piers. theres no advantage to using them for the fish youll catch there, they do work great and a hook in the corner of the mouth prevents getting chewed off but a j hook is best off the piers and truthfully if you gut hook a fish just chop the line at the hook eye and the hook will eventually rust out.

good luck!

You need to buy a Penn combo. Even if you don't go saltwater fishing they're still extremely solid.
>>
>>889995
Nah I'm straight on the Ugly Stik.

I want to set up another one some day and try maybe a Daiwa. That Lew's combo you got looks pretty straight too. Sucks Christmas is coming up though because I will be spending all my money on gifts and I will end up getting clothes from my sister and mom. I mean I probably could ask them to pool in and grab me something like that but I feel bad asking them for stuff.

My birthday was a few weeks ago too, I should've conned them into buying it for me but I'm too old to be asking for presents. I need a GF so I could tell her to buy me the stuff even though it would probably be with my money.
>>
>>889997
I want another memecaster combo before I get another spinning setup. If I do get on salt more I will probably grab a Fierce or Spinfisher combo. I also have that President 35 setup on the MH rod which wouldn't be bad for salt and I never even use it for fresh because it is a little too heavy unless I throw like 1oz jigs. And I would rather throw those jigs on the memecaster.

I need to quit smoking. I would have so much extra money not spending $150/wk on cigs.

That lews combo is very solid. The rod isn't super sensitive. It's a tad slow for T-rigged stuff and jigs imo, but it may be fast enough for you.

The reel is fantastic though. It cast light lures just as well as heavier ones. It's pretty smooth all around.

>I will be spending all my money on gifts and I will end up getting clothes from my sister and mom.

Why not ask for gift cards?

>>890004
>because it is a little too heavy unless I throw like 1oz jigs

Maybe im weird but for anything over a 1/4 oz I use a MH until 3/4-1oz then go up to a H. I don't like the way rods cast when they're on the upper end of their recommended weight I guess.

Also if you caught bigger fish you'd like heavier rods :-)
>>
>>890013
The only time you need big rods for bass fishing is when working large swimbaits.

You're right, but MH isn't really big though. ~3lb bass still put up a decent fight on them and most of the lures I use cast best (in my opinion) on them. Obviously you don't need them to catch bass, but they're the most comfortable to me.

My favorite spinning rod is a M and I use it a whole lot, but it also isn't the best option in areas with lots of cover.
>>
>>890013
They like clothes shopping.

And the rod on that President setup is really stiff for a MH rod. Casting a 1oz jig would barely even bend the tip.

I don't know, man. I fish saltwater 99% of the time but bass are one of the funnest fish to catch. It's satisfying as fuck to finally get one since it's usually hard to find them and figure out what they're biting on. Most days in saltwater you just look for seagulls and bait running and you're catching fish on whatever you throw to them.

>>890083
not that guy but I wonder what the point is also, those fillets are so small. I like eating bream and small fish but I would definitely scale & cook them whole, that doesn't even look like it'd be worth the time taken to fillet them all and looks pretty wasteful to boot.

Pair a medium one with a shakespeare excursion and some #8 mono, buy a thing of assorted Aberdeen hooks, a thing of assorted splitshot, and some cheapo red and white bobbers and fish for bluegill with little pieces of night crawler

You'll also need some needle nose pliers and/or forceps, some cheap nail clippers for cutting line easily (optional), probably a small knife (just a cheap buck folder is fine, you can get them at Wal-Mart) and you'll need a tackle box, you'll have to decide for yourself if a tackle bag traditional box is better for yiu

>>890141
I posted my copypasta in the OP but it is pretty much this >>890146

There is a link for good combos under $100. Get yourself a spinning rod and reel, 6'6" M rod and it should be paired with something like a 30 or 3000 size reel. Spool up some good 8lb mono like Trilene, then assorted aberdeen hooks, assorted split shots, bobbers, pliers, and a pocket knoife.

Tackle bags are GOAT but you can get away with whatever if you don't have a ton of lures. Rapalas and Rooster Tails are two of the easiest lures to start with if you want to fish with artificial stuff. Jigheads with curly tail grubs are great for panfish and bass too.

Just sucks it's November and lakes will be frozen before you know it.

If you ever want to try to go for quality over quanity, you should try spots farther away from piling though. Piling are great for smaller fishes to hide from bigger predators. Predators are usually a bit farther away from the piling waiting for bait fishes to get out of the cover to strike. Fish on the spot where the current is pushing away or squirl from the piling, forcing bait out to the open and disorientated them.

It's okay if your lure drift. If it drift sideway, simply cast a bit to one side to compensate. You can adjust which side of the pier you fish from as well. If you have a lot of space on the pier, you can always walk along the path of your lure drifting and cover a lot of water each cast

>tfw being vietnamese
pls no bully. There aren't many illegal vietnamese though because there were legal means for them to immigrate here after the vietnam war for people from South Vietnam. There are definitely some illegals now with visa overstay though. However, the process of getting visa is hard. I do agree that a lot of Vietnamese fisherman are keeping way too much stuffs that they catch though. Vietnamese- American used to create one of the strongest conservative stronghold in OC because of their past experience with communism in Vietnam. Sadly, that changed in recent years due to media brainwashing and the Democrat promises of more gibs.

I hate crowded pier and hasn't fished there for a long time. I mostly fish on the beach now. I enjoy running into 1 or 2 other fisherman once in a while to have a chat, but not crammed on a pier shoulder to shoulder.

I would say that going for mid pier spot can allow you to have more enjoyable fishing experience. People on end of pier are there to catch mostly mackerel and maybe bonito and also likely to keep everything they catched. Mackerels get really boring after a few of them since they are so easy to catch and sometimes they get in the way when you try to target other shit. They are godly as bait though. Bonitos are fun, but their run near the pier are pretty brief and maybe only last 30 min and happens twice a day. There are plenty of fishes even in 5 ft deep water so you can definitely catches stuff in any part of the pier.
>>
>>890308
Why do the Vietnamese fish so hard? Is there a shortage of stray cats?
>>
>>890322
Vietnamese prizes fresh fishes, no matter what species. They think that the fishes in the American markets are not fresh or something because fishes are in package. Therefore, they will keep a lot of fishes while fishing even if they are trash fishes or there are health advisories to avoid eating them. Maybe they just see fishes caught as "free" food.

If you ever go to a vietnamese market, there will be tanks full of live seafoods that can be bought and butchered. That's why the whole market will smell like fishes as soon as you step in the door.

I just like fishing because it's comfy or maybe I'm just austitic. I don't really keep much fishes other than something that I know is a good eating fish that doesn't have major health advisories against eating it. Only one I kept this year so far is a legal halibut.

I think size 7-8 is the biggest Rapala that will get hit by Mayans and Bluegill. #3 for Mepps.
>>
>>890359
So then maybe if you take a size 7 and put a bigger treble on the front and empty the back you'll get more bass and less bluegill/Mayans
Though I bet a UL combo with a tiny husky jerk (the 2 inch one) would be fun

I'd like to try the single hooks too if I can find the proper ones like TXfag is tryin to do. I normally don't even run stuff smaller that a Size 10 unless I'm targeting Mayans. I guess I could run a smaler one if the bass ate being picky and not taking big baits but the Size 10 Rapalas really aren't big if you are catching 15"+ bass. I think Size 10 is 10mm so just under 4".

Obviously not. But largemouth are hit or miss. You can get a 14" fish that will dive and jump and run a bunch before you land them and then sometimes you will hook an 18"+ fish that feels like a log until you get them 5' from shore and then they finally try to run a little bit.

I'm becoming a big fan of those peacocks. Every single one fights and tries to dive and run and they fight much harder than similar sized largemouth.
>>
>>890888
Yeah, LMB are hit or miss, but I've never caught a trout that wasn't fun. I'll take a 12" trout on ultra-light gear while I'm in the river over any deep sea fish.

Biggest fight I've ever had from a freshwater fish was a 2 foot LMB that felt like a whale. Snapped my line after a few seconds, but holy shit was it strong. For consistent fights, I've never caught a pickerel that didn't fight like hell the whole way.
>>
>>889895
I fish Erie & Huron. I wouldn't fish for great lakes perch with anything but life bait on a crappie rig near bottom. Usually emerald shiners. Unless ice fishing. Issue with lures like small mepps in 40fow is you're simply not going to get down to where the fish are. Small jigs work great ice fishing but may be a pain being blown around in a canoe and take awhile to get deep.

Unfortunately, I'm a long ways from Florida so I don't see myself getting any Mayans soon. There are supposedly sneks and gar around where I live now, so that should be fun if I can find them.
>>
>>890904
Yeah it's a different type of snek (Northern Snek vs Bullseye Snek down here) but I think they grow to similar sizes. Search online for where you can find them and run a Mepps in some calm water fairly deep near small patches of weeds and they will jump out.

I'm actually the guy from RI who mentioned (like 4 months ago) that I was moving to Tokyo for school. I'm not going to lie, going from being able to fish at a number of ponds, rivers and lakes all within a few minutes of my house literally every day if I wanted to, to being in the middle of a city is murder. A friend of mine lives right on a river about an hour away and I've crashed there and gone fishing in the morning, but despite reading online that SOME bass live there, all I see is carp. Hundreds and hundreds of carp. There are so many fucking carp you wouldn't believe it.

Anyways, I'm thinking of going to a man made fishing pond in the city next week just so I can actually catch a fish, as I'm going into withdrawal at this point. After that, my friend and apparently all of her coworkers are huge on fishing, so we'll be going on expeditions together to other parts of the country, and even chartering some boats and going for some big game.

I just want a nice pretty lake with bass, and maybe some pike or pike family type fish with some bluegill swimming around to feed the big ones. I miss freshwater like that.

They are uncomfortable bikes and shitty on the highway. Street fighter and naked style bikes are better on the road and you can actually pass semi trucks and cats swiftly on the highway and get the fuck away from other cars.

I've never caught a king but at my local pier here's what the people I've seen that have caught them do.

>set up a trolley rig using a surf rod 9-10' surf rod tied to the pier railings with a pvc pipe and a bungie cord
>fighting rod is a 7ft MH
>reel is a high capacity conventional reel like a penn or avet with 20# mono
>tie on a thin wire king rig with a fat mullet or ladyfish on the end

I've always been told using mono is really important for kings (fully spooled or topshot) because they strike really hard and have soft mouths. If you have to use a spinning reel I'd get a used penn 704z from ebay since they hold a lot of mono, are super easy to maintain and are built to last a lifetime unlike most modern reels.
>>
>>891187
>>891002

There's so much ass hurt. People honestly think he's gonna 1.) deport them 2.) put them in jail for being brown 3.) start world war 3. I really wish people would actually listen to what each candidate says as opposed to listening to cnn showing clips of him saying mean things.

Just as an aside, trump was not my first pick and never would be, but I like my guns and money so. Anyway enough of that; talk about fishin

All of the Hillary fearmongering commercials didn't help either. Most of my facebook is upper-middle class Suburban kids from IL and the butthurt was so strong I went on for the first time in like a year just to talk shit.

I always wanted to see a business guy run for prez instead of a career liar (politician) but I wish it were somebody beside Trump. It took me moving to a Red state to stop voting Dem though. I enjoy keeping the money I make.

And I want to believe chattermeme is best meme but they have failed to produce like the Mepps meme. It is getting better with the cooler weather and I have had hope since the beginning because those things do have a really good swimming action.

Gander Mtn?

You better stock up on those X-Raps. The Yamamotos aren't bad at all either.
>>
>>891415
Yeah thats Gander.

I already have most of the stuff in there but for those that dont they had some sweet jerk baits, cranks and soft plastics in there

There are actually people bitching about Trump not being a politician, and saying stuff like "I shouldn't have to have any experience to be a doctor since he got elected."

It truly boggles the mind.

And for the chatter meme the super fluke jrs fit on there really well. ive read that some people will take off the skirt and run it with just a swim bait. I might try it one of these days, but it's probably about to get too cold here for them to be super effective

I toss a bit of chum out when I first start fishing and then evey 30 mins or so after. Or fill an old sock with chum and tie it to a rock and sink it.

Where in TX are you? The water must not get nearly as warm as it does here. But that is also more of a desert heat I think where it cools off at night. Here in FL, the sun is so strong in the summer that it will be 85F by like 9am, then 88F all throughout the day until the sun goes down, and only get down to like 79F at the coolest point in the night because of the ocean.

That Super Fluke Jr thing seems like a good idea because the chatterbaits give such a good struggling baitfish movement. I still need to pick up more of those mini ones from Walmart but they only have them in white. One of those with a Gulp minnow would probably be great. I have a few different Power Bait minnows that would work well too.

Texas has multiple climates his is more cool and dry for this time of year where as 3 hours down from him where I am its warmer and wetter.

This is it pepsi.

I'm finally giving up on bothering you into going saltwater fishing, it's time for something new. Give me one good reason why you aren't bass fishing with large swimbaits. Not only do they look awesome but they're great for weeding out the dinks in the lake.

You've spent more on lures than some people have spent buying a car.

With the warm water, they won't even hit baits like that (swimming or large baits) except for a couple months out of the year.
>>
>>891479
>implying it's not worth trying

quality over quantity. I'd rather catch one good fatty than 10 dinks.

I have tried big baits, don't you worry. I could probably run them in another month or two. Literally like late Jan into early Feb is the only good window where they really hit big baits like those and full size spinnerbaits.
