#95-"Fly Boi" Edition

Previous Thread:

Anybody else have anything to add to the Pastebin or Imgur? I put a little saltwater one in there, but I want to do a river one possibly and trout. Just a summary of good spots to target, how to fish those spots, some simple rigs, and a good tackle setup for the beginner.

How do I river fish, actually been wondering I fish the sac Osage and can catfish decently but there's gotta be crappie and bass in there. I've actually been told there's walleye. That's in Missouri btw

For walleye, we used to run river rigs like the 3-way rig in this pic. You can run them without the blades, or with blades and beads (look for Lindy Rigs) and most of the time we would have 2-3 hooks on each rig with multiple minnows. I think we used fathead minnows IIRC, not the smallest minnows but not quite as big as smaller shiners.

Walleye loved those rigs with the blades and minnows. You can run nightcrawlers instead of minnows too and it's popular to get a needle/syringe and pump the worms up with air a little bit so they float and stay off the bottom.

I can never find a pic of the exact rigs we ran and it's annoying. I think the Lindy Rigs normally have two hooks, so it was basically a 3-way rig but instead of just plain line to the hook off of the 3-way swivel, you tie a Lindy Rig on.

We would hit lots of other stuff on those 3-Way rigs too. Mostly Walleye because that river was full of them but also the occaisional largemouth, channel cat, perch, fat crappie or really large bluegill, a big softshell turtle, etc.

If you wanna fish lures instead, you just gotta find the right spot. Predator fish like to hang out in slow moving water, facing upstream, and waiting for prey to come floating down the river in nearby faster moving water. So you want to find some structure or a hole or a sandbar or rock with still or slow moving water behind it. Cast upstream and run the bait back downstream right on the edge of that slow moving water.

You can also run those 3-way rigs with all sorts or artificial baits but idk how effective it would be unless you are trolling. I guess if you just cast it out and wait, the current could be moving fast enough to give the lure some action.

I'm curious about river fishing too, primarily the Raritan / D+R canal since its close to me.

The d+r is slow moving while the Raritan is bigger. Not sure what is the better to fish since there's not much info online.

Another thing would be trying to use waders through the canal side; the water looks murky af and feels like it will swallow you down. A lot of vegetation there in the summer from what I recall. Obviously finding better cleaneances in the path would work.

If I'm going for catfish would it be smart to chum some if the water? Remember the d+r side is slow moving, like one long pond, so I think it can work.
>>
>>882439
Have a boat so I can troll, we've been doing something similar. We put a 1oz weight then a swivel, then a 3 foot leader or so with a little bobber towards the bait to hold it off the bottom a bit

Potential mega-autist question but is it really that weird to be fishing at a park?

I'm a total beginner and there's a pretty good sized lake that I catch channel catfish and bass at but feel super out of place.

I've had so many people stop in their jog/run and ask me what I'm doing. It's almost making me not want to go back because I hate having to explain people what I'm doing even though it's quite obvious. Just a tad bit awkward.

Very cool. Do you get supplies online or at an Art store like Michaels or AC Moore? If online can you post where?
>>
>>882675
I don't think you can get Colorado blades and hooks at Michael's.

I wish you could though. I really want to make some inlines (especially ones with worm hooks so I can run soft baits and make em weedless) but most online vendors sell the supplies in bulk and even then it is somewhat pricey to make good quality ones.
>>
>>882675
I got about half the supplies online at Jann's Netcraft and the other half at a hobby/jewelry making store. A bit of an initial investment but I think it was worth it. The majority of the startup costs are on reusable stuff like tools etc

>>882683
I've seen people on youtube punching their own blades from sheet metal and making their own clevises, etc. You can be cheap if you want

You looking specifically at the fat bodied diving crank? Or you open to other hard baits?

Suspensing jerkbaits are my favorite. Specifically Rapala X-Raps (pic related). Size 10 is good for largemouth and the "Gold" has been the best color for me although it is more of a copper color with an orang belly and black on top.. Tons of brands sell other suspending jerk baits too. Rapala Husky Jerks are classics, Yo-Zuri 3DB's, I just recently grabbed a Strike King suspending jerk bait too.

They don't realky dive or float, but rather suspend maybe 2'-3' deep.

The Husky Jerk? I was actiually looking for a Size 10 Firetiger Husky Jerk or Original but they didn't have en at Dick's. They had an 11 or 12 Original in Firetiger but I hate how they put 3 treble hooks on them. They're unneccesary and get tangled with the line and other lures worse and hook bass in shitty places.

I picked up these Yamamoto jerkbaits on sale at Dick's a couple months back and those weren't bad at all. Only problem is they are a bit small for larger bass but they were the only jerkbaits left with the sale and clearance on the Yamamoto hardbaits.

All of those Yamamoto lures I have seem to be bretty gud. It's too bad Dick's has ADD with their product lineup. They carry stuff for 6mos and then replace it with new shit.

>>
just got back from the best fishing trip of my goddamn life to date.

Went to cedar key and within 10 minutes of launching the kayak I seen some seagulls diving. Went to go check it out and the water was BOILING for a good half acre of water with mullet jumping out of the water and redfish tailing. Those motherfuckers fins were so big I actually thought it was a few sharks eating some 16 inch mullet but these were 40+ inch reds and there were dozens upon dozens of them.

Threw like 10 different baits and couldn't get them to hit anything until I tossed one of those white and red redfish magic jigs and worked it really slow on the bottom, I fought him for around 30 minutes and got one glimpse of him (probably around 40-45 inches) until my jig popped out of his mouth. Couldn't get another bite but they stayed there for over an hour and gave no fucks to me paddling over them in 2 feet of water.

I've never seen redfish school like that let alone ones that large, I can't fucking wait until I can go back again with my big tackle and try to find them again.

Try around these areas. Look for points, drop offs, and fallen trees or other cover in the water.

Also think about investing in a kayak, they're cheap as fuck and will let you fish the whole lake.

You don't have to catch anything for the trip to be good, anon. Just the experience of seeing something so amazing made it great. My father used to tell me about stuff like that happening when he was young and he hadn't seen it for a long time. I grew up thinking schools like that don't happen anymore and if they did I'd never see it.

Hell, I most likely wont see anything like that ever again.

Pretty much what they said >>882814 and >>882841 The little inlets will probably have shallow spots that drop off real quick to deep spots so if there is some vegetation in the shallow areas or cover for smaller fish, you will want to cast just on the deeper side of that. Predator fish, especially bass, will come out of the deeper water at dawn and dusk and lurk right near the dropoffs or the edge of whatever cover there is and wait for a random meal to pop out into open water.

I really need to get some sleep today but damn do I want to go play with this mini chatterbait and see if I can hit a snek. I haven't gotten a snek in a couple months (mostly because I haven't been at snekey leks). I can't seem to figure out their feeding patterns either, it seems like the best days have been really warm and fishing earlier in the afternoon but I have caught a few after sunset too.
>>
>>882826
I wouldn't really call that a fishing experience. More like a sight seeing adventure, kinda like whale watching I guess. To be fair, whatever I hooked thay day was fucking big. I have caught 10lb carp and big bass before and this was on another level.

This guy who lives on that lake and fishes there all the time was telling me about how he got a 17lb, 47" snakehead out of there and I think that's what it was. I had 15lb braid on that rod, and the drag was set so it takes a feisty 3lb+ bass running its hardest to even get it to click. This fish ran out like 30yds of line in a couple seconds flat after I set the hook. If it weren't for that, I would just write it off as a big snapping turtle.

Oh, and yesterday I saw some kid riding his bicycle down my street with a fishing rod. It was just like a 6'6" M combo, but there isn't really any freshwater around here unless the kid rode like 3mi. I really should've asked where he was fishing at. Maybe I could've had a new fishing buddy.
>>

I actually think I have hooked that one twice, but the first time it was a lighter setup with a Blue Fox and the fucker wrapped it up so quick there was no chance.

And why are you assuming that's the only time I've enjoyed myself fishing?

I need more suspending jerkbaits. I think I finally figured out how to tell the difference between Originals and Husky Jerks. They really should stamp or print the type of lure somewhere on these Rapalas. Yo-Zuri does it and it's nice. The floaters have an [F] and the jerkbaits have an [SP]. Lipless rattlers have an [S] for "Sinking" I'm assuming. But then there's a couple of deeper diving ones that also have [SP] so I'm assuming those ones suspend when you aren't reeling.

We just have the spotted gar and I have seen them around certain spots recently but never really target them. That's retarded on my part, there will be a 20" gar nipping at a Texas rigged worm while I'm reeling it in and for some reason I cast the worm again hoping for a 16" bass instead of tying on a Rapala and trying to go for the 20"+ gar.

I throw big black frogs (BBF)'s at all times of the day. Either that or just a plain white white one. The top pattern of the frog is just a marketing ploy to make you think one is better than the other. Only thing that matters is the color of the belly and the profile of the bait itself
>>
>>882879
depends if you are fishing in structure a lot. If so then not really. I remember I would loose a lot of lures when I was a kid and nooby as shit. The more you work them the more you will figure out how exactly is the optimal way to fish it

I used to use a whole lot of lures. I've found out if you raise your rod tip high and lightly bounce the rod tip up and down it'll work them loose a lot of times, where as if you pulled really hard on it the lure will just get more stuck.

But you're gonna lose lures sometimes it's just a part of fishing.

Newfag here. I love fishing but don't know hardly jack shit about it.

Are all the fishing pros just autistic or are there actually some important principles to fishing?

>>882927

I use circle hooks exclusively when wacky rigging and haven't noticed any difference in percentage of good hookups compared to when I fish a Texas rig or a jig head

Never used anything but a senko for it tho
>>
>>882938
Fishing pros are autistic but there are also some guiding principles to putting fish on the hook

Dawn and dusk are the best times to go

Where the baitfish and activity is is where the predator fish will be so if you see a part of a lake that's got action in the water ie insects swimming around, fishing birds like herons, turtles swirling, etc this will be a better place to fish than the silent part of the lake

Also I have had the most success when I match what the fish are actually feeding on in terms of diet and around here that means small plastics like mini lizards, smallie beavers, and 4" power worms
>>
>>882938
There is a lot of technique but sometimes you just need that luck.

Whenever I go out with my little brother, I will pretty much set him up with whatever will work good and tell him what area to try. He knows very little about fishing but he ends up landing a 5lb larhemouth.

Plus you can follow all the suggestions and use the "correct" lure at the "correct" time in the "correct" spot and it may not do shit while old dude is fishing with a lure that should never work in those conditions and in a spot that seems awful but lands fish after fish. Old dude has been fishing the lake for the past 30 years and knows exactly where to fish and what to use. It's a lot of trial and error and gaining experience.

>match what the fish are actually feeding on
This is another one of those things where common sense and fishing knowledge tells you one thing but experience can teach you to do something totally fucking different.

The lake I was just at, right around sunset almost every day you will see the smaller fish leave their super shallow grass hiding spot and go just outside the weeds in maybe 3'-4' of water and start picking bugs off the top. If you want, you will see areas where the baitfish are getting chased by bass near the surface of the water.

Common sense says the best lure would be something like an Original Rapala or popper in a natural silver baitfish color and run it around to replicate an injured baitfish and an easy target for the feeding bass to grab.

It doesn't work at that spot. Instead, I will toss out a lizard or worm Texas rigged and work it along the bottom. Sure enough, when I get close to the baitfish getting chased around, a bass will grab it right way. I have no fucking clue why it works that way but I have been doing it like that for the past 6mos and the baits replicating baitfish never get hit in that situation but the Texas rigged soft baits get taken immediately.

Cliff fishing anon from last thread here

the waves were much higher this time around, making the bite tough but i managed an opaleye and a dink sandbass

i think the smaller hooks did the trick, but im still interested in tougher bait, gonna have to get some frozen mussels and squid

i was thinking about getting some owner mosquito hooks since i never stop hearing about them. Do you guys like them?

Also im still undecided on drop shot rig vs dropper loop for this kind of fishing.

i would think on one hand the drop shot is more sensitive, while the dropper loop looks more natural. What do you guys prefer?

Checked

Drop-shot, dropper loop rigs, and 3-way rigs are all almost the same thing. I would probably do the dropper loop or 3-way if fishing bait, drop shot pretty much for lures. Idk how true this is, but word on the street is you can get some shitty bites on drop shots because the tight main line is right there by the bait and fish could potentially run into it while going for the bait.

And don't overthing the Owner hook thing. It's a good brand but there are lots of other good brands too.

I do. Only retards like you believe the only way to catch saltwater fish is to throw some shrimp on a hook and wait. The other saltfags here can confirm spoons are insanely effective.

its actually a fairly active form of bait fishing, since the swells will throw your rig around and toward shore

i generally cast way out and let the swell carry it into a snag, let it sit about 30 seconds then pull it out and let it be carried into the next snag

you gotta be mobile to find the productive snags as well

i guess a guy could just get a 6oz pyramid sinker to anchor it and wait around but fuck that

Hey guys, got a quick question.

Is this time of the year still viable for fishing? I'm attending Uni now and I'm not in northern MN anymore, so I can't just go fishing whenever. But I'm going camping this weekend with my brother and am wondering if hitting up a river in a state forest is worth it or not.
>>
>>883075
50% of the reason is because there are not many people around to spook the fish or interfere with your fishing during that hours AND there are some light to fish. It's also the time you can fit in your fishing trip before or after work

Many fishes also feed during that transition between day and night and vice versa because that's when bait creatures transition from being active at night to going into hiding and there are light for the fishes to hunt.

Some fishes are more active during the day though. I find surf fishing for halibut seems to be most productive around 9 am to 11 am instead of dusk or dawn.

do you use a wire leader? I was in cape cod over the summer and we caught a lot of blues. they fought harder than the stripers truthfully. kept a few over the stay for the table and it wasnt as bad as what the locals said it would taste like. ikejime, bleeding and iced down worked to make the fish much more edible.

>>883071
not saying spoons or grubs wont work because ive caught opaleye on gotcha type flies but..they are algae feeders. youd have better luck with bait. frozen green peas, chopped spinach and algae off the rocks. kelp bugs (looks similar to a stonefly nymph) work also for opaleye which actually isnt really a perch.
>>

oppps, I mixed it up with walleye perch.

Yea, i guess spoon or grubs won't work with vegetarian much. You can catch plenty of the other stuffs with those though.

I mean that's pretty much it. I could probably go to the beach at 4am on a Tuesday and might be the only one fishing on my 100ft of shoreline. But I can go to one of these lakes on a sunny Saturday afternoon and most likely be the only one there.

>>883075
Dusk/dawn is feeding time for most predators. Barometric pressure and moon phases have a lot to do with it too. If you can get out right before a bad thunderstorm rolls in, you will probably slam bass.

The cloudy thing probably goes along with the pressure a bit. I think it also helps make artificial bait not look quite as artificial. On real sunny days, you normally don't want to run super bright and flashy silver spinners because the reflection and flash coming off the blades can actually scare fish away sometimes.

>>883092

It is a challenge to get the nicer fish actually. With so many baitfish around it's hard to get tarpon, snook and other large gamefish to hit lures or bait that's on your line. Bluefish and jacks are easy to catch though.

>rig up surf rod with anchor
>rig up fighting rod
>get set
>throw gotcha plug for small bluefish 12-18 inches
>rig live so it splashes around the surface swimming in a 3-5 foot circle
>keep fishing with gotcha plugs for blues and spanish
I got a 6' shark and hooked into a decent cobia (one of the regulars estimated it at 50 pounds)
At night i tie on a glow in the dark gotcha and re rig my surf rod to a fish finder rig with 4 oz of lead before hooking on a whole live spot or croaker about 7 inches long and let that soak while I fish glow in the dark gotcha plug

They sell lure retrievers but they only work if the line is still on it.

Otherwise maybe put a really heavy weight on one of your rods with heavy line and then tie a hook on a couple feet under the weight. Get that hook stuck on the lure and then let the line out real quick. The heavy weight will fall and pull down on the hook attached to the lure. If the lure is snagged on the bottom, that technique probably won't work though but it could work if whatever it is snagged on is above the bottom and the weight has somewhere to fall

I was thinkin Mayans, bluegill, other cichlids, and maybe even small sneks at certain lakes. Only problem is sometimes the Mayans will go for Size 8 Rapalas or Mepps #3 and other times they won't even touch a Size 4 Rapala or Mepps #1 but will hit really tiny stuff like the Mini Mites. You attatch it to your main hook So when a fish grabs your bait there is a hook on both ends of it

How big are the tubes you're running? If they are larger ones, use a shakey head jig. There are the ones with the offset EWG or the ones with the little corkscrew spring deal and you could easily run those weedless but they are normally like 1/0 and larger.

I've got 4 of them in the crank bait type. They've worked ok. I don't see how you are having problems casting them since they are no different from any other lure in a similar body shape. Only places I use them are in shallow, rocky bottom areas. The most productive color of the ones I have is the craw colored one.

Tie that lure into some 4# mono on a 7' light power rod and it'll cast a country mile

I was at Dick's looking at the W&M inshore spinning reels they have on display earlier today. They feel cheap as shit and cost just as much as a Penn Fierce II. I'm floored that they are charging so much for a reel that feels like it belongs on a walmart combo.

Where did I say anything about traditional spinners? And maybe they aren't popular in salt because of moving parts that could very easily rust in place I bet that jacks, macks, blues, sea trout, and red drum will all take a spinner but that spinner will be totaled by rust unless you spend 5 minutes making sure every bit of salt is out of it

The Mepps website has a lure selection by target species page

I think I'll get a kayak to fish in. Any recommendations? Don't need much room since I'm used to wearing a fishing vest and do stuff solo.

Cheaper the better.

Go to Walmart or dicks and see what they have. As long as you arnt a giant fat fuck *cough* skid *cough* then some of their options will probably suit you fine. Plan out what gear you intend to bring and then try and match that with yak you are looking at

There are some but not like past years. This whole year as odd after an epic spring.

I got skunked essentially in the canal. 1 - 13" schoolie. Supposedly there are still a bunch of schoolies but my time has been limited.

I did get nailed by something monster in a south side bay, grabbed a swimmer (either a rap or a sebile) and screamed drag for 10 seconds or so shaking its head until it tossed the hook dammitsomuch. Would have loved to have at least seen that one.
>>
>>883882
I just checked it and they really aren't large enough. Throwing a 1/4 - 1/2 oz at the ocean really isn't practical. Hooks are too small to be effective for most.
>>
>>884016
what are you talking about I surf fish with no heavier than half an ounce of weight all the time
>>
>>883993
I have both and use the yak infinitely more. Then again, I have a real boat, not a tin shell. It takes a bit of planning here I can toss the 'yak in the bed of the truck or better yet just leave it in there.
>>
>>884007
personally I like Sit on Tops. Much more freedom. Check craigslist sports section or boating section. You can get them pretty cheap.
>>
>>884018
more power to ya. I need to get mine out 50 yds or so, typically in wind, 2 oz and up is the norm here.
>>
>>883996
I guess my argument is more muh size, I can go though whitecapping waves, go 20mph, go up river without wearing me out. Those other pros come with size as well.
>>
Doing a project related to fishing for class, would be great if some of yall people who fish could do this short survey.

It would help us out. Thanks

Fake Skid confirmed. The real Skid would have said he wanted to be a horse with a fedora.

>>884007
Tamarak Angler, check it out on amazon.

And yes I'm shilling this kayak again because it's fucking great for the money.
>>
>>884021
Interesting the beaches are steep here and you don't need to cast a mile to catch fish they come up into the breakers. I literally have caught fish in ankle deep water
>>
>>884018
I imagine I would need to go heavier than that around here. The wind is always 15mph+ from the east all day.'

>>884023
Gr8 survey mang.

I'm thinking about using bluegill next time I fish, becuase I don't mind getting catfish or bass.

Would knocking the sunnies out and then fishing them like a swimsuit be a good idea? I love the idea of using real bait but don't like live bait and the torture I'd give the bluegill.

The plan is to either let it sit for catfish or swim it like a swimbait and get some aggressive fish like bass.

Any feedback?

This is actually a bass pro shop agent getting data for free

Jk but post the survey lol

definitely can catch big stripers in less than 2 feet of water here but its really a huge sandbar in most places other than outer cape, far east edge of the hook. I can paddle out 300 yards and still be in 3-4 feet of water.
Other than boating channels/trenches in Barnstable Harbor it's like 2 feet deep and stripers cruise through there as well when water temp is right. On lunar low tides you can almost walk across it.

>>884052
Barnstable Harbor is that inlet just southwest of center of image.

For anyone who has an ultralight reel. I remember one of the other tripfags saying he couldn't cast his ugly stick and hated it. These look intriguing http://youtu.be/kpxWurslYxk
>>
>>884042
Idk how much action it would have but I like the idea of running a small one as a trailer on a spinnerbait or something.

>>884044
I take those surveys a lot just for a chance to win the gift card and I like complaining about how they never have sales on anything worthwhile.

>>884071
That was probably me. I feel like those fiberglass rods lose action when they get older.
>>

>I've never seen redfish school like that let alone ones that large
They do when the tide goes in/out for some reason. At my grandpa's old place we would sometimes pull 5 or 6 red's about that size one after the other. I didn't have to fight them for very long because I was always right on top of them.

Gotta love these new ads. Idk how it is on PC, but Mook fucked up mobile for sure. Like 2/3 of a page is the ad, then another 2/3 page for the advertisement telling people to place ads. Then another 2 pages of bullshit at the bottom between the bottom post and the "Refesh" and "Catalog" button.

Damn, it's cloudy today and would probably be a great day to cast around but I got off work late as fuck and I'm about ready to pass out.

>own 3 boats
>own 5 kayaks
>own 2 sups

Ive found each has its merits for fishing. Its not about who can afford the luxury. A kayak can put you otw much easier and faster than a boat. But Its harder to chase boils in a kayak. Kayaks can access tighter areas than pleasure boats. kayaks are slow to paddle/peddle. See? Theres lots of pros and cons for both types but that doesnt mean one is better than the other. youre just ignorant
