Anyone from California?
What's the fine for "Attempting to Snag Salmon"?
My dad's an amateur fisher and one of his friends took him to the Nimbus Dam in Sacramento. He says he wasn't trying to snag he just did a hard pull so the hook gets attached on the fish's mouth.
>>875967
Was he ticketed?
>>875967
The game wardens will watch and it's really easy to tell if the angler is purposely trying to snag fish. Idk what the penalty is, but as long as he wasn't just ripping an oversized hook across the water on purpose there is no way he would get in trouble.
Those fines are normally hefty tho and the game wardens can take your gear if they want.
>>875967
Not sure, but as long as it's not obvious he'll be fine. Tying on a 10/0 treble hook wont help matters though, even if you bait it up.
>>875974
I guess? He showed me that yellow receipt thing. It was marked down as an infraction and on the "Yes/No Correctible?" part it was marked as No.
He was given a date to appear in court.
Would he be able to fight it?
>>875975
>>875981
Yeah like I mentioned he's an amateur. He was using bait and everything. The warden actually gave the same citation to three other strangers that were also in the area. And another got snagged with fishing without a license kek.
You'd think if a criminal wanted to purposely snag salmon he'd do it in a secluded place. We think the warden was just on his period or something and wanted to bust someone because it was raining.
>>875988
Well if he has a ticket then I'd suggest looking up the info from the ticket online.
>>875993
I did and the best I got was a 7 year old yahoo answers page. I thought I'd post here wondering if anybody knew anything.
>>875994

freshwater fish are all gross af bruh, catfish are the only acceptable thing to eat if they're out of a clean river.
>>876023
>freshwater fish are all gross
Could say the same thing about """"""""""""""""""beef"""""""""""""""""""" ground meat burgers/hot dogs/gmo products and all kinds of other shit in the modern human diet. I rather eat something I know was alive just a few hours ago than turkey eyes.
>>876036
"beef"
Your tinfoil hat looks nice, anon.
>>876036
Man has been genetically modifying organisms since the Neolithic revolution via selective breeding of plants and animals
>>875999
I do. I snag all damn day long and can get upwards of 1k salmon during their spawning run. You can make about $15 per pound for wild caught. I'll let you do the math on that, kid.
>>876036
>>876023
All fish are gross now due to absurd fucking levels of pollution. Eating fish is essentially killing your brain and if you feed it to your children you are seriously fucking up their mental future. If you need omega-3 use a different source.
t. old man shakes fist at cloud
>>876114
>he doesn't get his daily dose of Vitamin Mercury
>>876083
>genetically modifying organism
That's specifically a special term and uses genetic engineering to perform.
>Genetic engineering alters the genetic make-up of an organism using techniques that remove heritable material or that introduce DNA prepared outside the organism either directly into the host or into a cell that is then fused or hybridized with the host.[4] This involves using recombinant nucleic acid (DNA or RNA) techniques to form new combinations of heritable genetic material followed by the incorporation of that material either indirectly through a vector system or directly through micro-injection, macro-injection and micro-encapsulation techniques.
What selective breeding is something different entirely. You can't crossbreed a strawberry with a salmon using selective breeding.
>Selective breeding (also called artificial selection) is the process by which humans use animal breeding and plant breeding to selectively develop particular phenotypic traits (characteristics) by choosing which typically animal or plant males and females will sexually reproduce and have offspring together. Domesticated animals are known as breeds, normally bred by a professional breeder, while domesticated plants are known as varieties, cultigens, or cultivars. Two purebred animals of different breeds produce a crossbreed, and crossbred plants are called hybrids. Flowers, vegetables and fruit-trees may be bred by amateurs and commercial or non-commercial professionals: major crops are usually the provenance of the professionals.
Saying GMO is the same as selective breeding is like saying fish are the same as dogs.
Where is Pompano anon? It's so damn nice out today, we should go fishin
>>876131
He's obviously at the Juno pier.
Best California/Oregon lakes for fishing this time of year? Don't care about the species, just need some time to myself as long as I get a bite or three.
>>876141
Those are different people. There is a dude who lived right by a bunch of lakes I go to around here.

Florida is wee tiny and it takes like no time to get anywhere from coast to coast.
memecaster arrives today
im ready for backlashes and wishing i spent money on something else
>>876147
You don't really believe that, do you?
>>876152
What one did you get? And what line?
Read the copypasta in the pastebin and take it slow. You should be straight. Go with fairly heavy lures at first, crank up the brakes and tension, and avoid casting into the wind if possible. The casting technique is different than spinning reels so that will take a little practice but you will be straight when you get that down.
Also remember what I mentioned about braid on memecasters. If you get a snag or something and pull really hard on the line, be careful with the next cast.
>>876152
>>876156
And one more thing, if you don't like it at first, just stick with it. I had my first memecaster for like a year and never used it because I didn't practice enough to get comfortable with it. Then I bought a second one, and a few months after that I finally forced myself to start using them more and now I prefer them over spinning reels for most lures >1/4oz.
>>876156
one thing i dont quite understand is line dig or how to prevent it other than spooling the line tight. how are shops when it comes to this? i was thinking of having cabelas do it because im lazy
>>876165
I don't think it matters how tight you spool it. You can spool it super tight when you originally put the line on, but the first time you cast and retrieve it, it will be loose again.
Just be careful when you get a snag. Grab the line with your hand and pull on that instead of yanking it with the rod and making the line dig in. And if you hook something heavy, just be easy on the next cast.
>>876117
>like saying fish are the same as dogs.
You were saying?

>>876111
Kill yourself poachfag
>>876165
I've only had line dig with braid and it never seems to matter too much how tight you spool it since casting usually undoes the tightness anyways
You'll learn to live with it
any tips on california yellowtail fishing (or shore fishing in any reguard)
>>876152
You'll be alright. I let my buddy who can barely cast a spinning reel use one of mine and he managed to not best it up. As long as you don't try and power it out there you should be alright.
>>876165
Spool it tight anyway, but it wont really help for line dig. I've only had line dig be a problem when I'm using lighter lures. With a heavier lure it'll usually just make the cast not as smooth.
>>876111
>>876023
Walleye and crappie are the two best fish to eat period. Catfish comes in third.
>>876203

Considering the time it takes to drive across Florida is the same time it takes to pick up a friend for going fishing 2-3 times a week, yes, it isn't very big at all.
>>875951
Daily reminder that if you buy another ng Abu Garcia, Quantum, Penn, Pfluger or fenwick you are a Pure Fishing nigger and you are supporting shit American companies who produce everything in china as cheap as possible.
Shimano/g loomis master race
>>876241
i love my shimano reels desu senpai
>>876241
Same. I have Two Stradics, Two Calcuttas, and a Sustain on the way and you just can't beat the quality. Smoothest drag, great casting and excellent power.
I caught a 16lb carp on my 1000 Stradic and 4lb test and I wasn't worried about breaking off once.
>>876217
It takes 7hrs to drive from Miami to Talahassee. 6.5hrs (with no traffic) if you live in the Keys and want to go to Disney World for the weekend.
>>876241
Or Korea
>daily reminder that Shimano only manufactures the highest end stuff in Japan
There's no reason not to buy any of it. There's a reason Abu Garcia is still in business. If you don't want something assembled in Asia, but an expensive Abu made in Sweden.
>>876253
>there is no reason not to buy any of it
Give me a reason why anyone should buy any of it?
>nb4 muhh affordability
All of it is complete shit. I've used it all, and none of it compares to Mid-High range Shimano. Don't even get me started on rods either. Even the most expensive Fenwicks feel worse than St. Croix's entry level rods.
>>876257
I don't think you understand what diminishing returns are
I just realized my spinning reel is a 5000. Can this be my main catfish reel?
>>876247
I have the stradic CI4+ FAML 1000 is that the one you have? It has max 4lbs of drag, I use it with 6lb test spider wire braid and UL rods
Also, there is a massive red tide off the coast where I reside. Do the fish just leave or are they all dead now
>pic unrelated
>>876259
>i dont think you understand what diminishing returns ar
I've had the same Shimano Calcutta for over 10 years, and it still works like I bought it new.
Tell me a shit ass Abu or Pfleuger ABS plastic asscaster can last that long and perform the way it did out of the box. Even Ambassedeurs start to shit themselves 6 months after you buy them.
>>876260
Sure
>>876257
It's not even affordability. You can buy an Abu Cardinal or Shimano Sienna for $30. Pick which one you like. They will both give you decades of service if you don't destroy them.
I know this is all bait but
>if you buy Abu you are a Pure Fishing fanboy
>t. Shimano fanboy
I have a bunch of different stuff. As long as you avoid a couple models from a couple companies, it's all good stuff. There's a reason Abu Garcia still sells $400+ reels. They work well and people keep buying them. Same goes for Shimano. You don't always get the newest and most high tech designs with Shimano, but the stuff is built well and there are rarely little annoying features that are overlooked (something that happens with a Quantum reel every so often and other companies that are always trying to change).
>>876273
>Even Ambassedeurs start to shit themselves 6 months after you buy them.
My dad has had one since the 80s that still works great. Are you weeb or something?
Plus I think shimanos look like ass for the most part. Abu4lyfe.
>>876274
>falling for the b8
Here's a couple of cheap reels made by Pure Fishing. The Shakespeare is probably 15 years old and the Mitchell is close to 20. Still work fine.
>>876277
Can't even reply to b8 right...
>>876279
>>876277
And this is a Shimano Sienna that is quite a few years old (maybe 10?). They haven't changed the design one bit because it works, but it is heavy for the size and there is nothing great about it. It is very simple on the inside though so there isn't much to break.
Pflueger President is probably still the best spinning reel for <$60.
>>876285
Fuck
Just woke up from a nap and slightly retarded
>>876287
It's all the toxins from those Pure Fishing reels seeping into your skin
>>876291
I will admit PowerPro (owned by Shimano) is still my favorite braid. I'm beginning to get really frustrated with SpiderWire. I have it on 4 or 5 rods and I'm constantly cutting off a couple yards of line because it frays. The rods with PowerPro are fine.
I can't remember if SpiderWire is Pure Fishing though. FireLine is, but not sure about SpiderWire.
How are light up lures? Can anyone give me a summary on them? I'd imagine a little glow would get a lot of bites, but also know it spooks the fish
Goin to stop by Dick's, I want to grab a couple larger original Rapalas or Husky Jerks. They may still have that "Buy 4 Get 2" deal and I almost hope they don't because I don't want shit to be picked through.
>>876305
SpiderWire is Pure Fishing (according to their website). I concur about the fraying. I have SpiderWire on both my reels atm, and ive begun cutting off about 20cm every time I go fishing, whereas I used to just be able to leave the swivel on for weeks. Lost too many lures because of it.
I hate salmon fags so much.. literally ever single street had cars lined down every sidewalk. When I went over the bridge I saw at least 500 people ass to ankles trying to catch garbage half dead salmon. Really wish a flash flood would come through and wipe them all out. God damn fags
>>876311
Welp, I might actually have to venture to that glorious hellhole Bass Pro one of these days. I mainly wanted an Original and/or Husky Jerk in Size 10 Firetiger. They had small ones in Original, and the Husky Jerks were Size 8 and Size 11. Size 8 is a little too small for the memecasters to launch real far and they aren't the best for large bass. And Size 11 has the three treble hooks which piss me off.
I've been looking at those MirroLures recently because they are the one company that does black and purple hard baits, so they were $6ea if you buy 2 or more. And the KVDâ„¢ Jerbait was on clearance for $6 off of $9.
Another month and they will have a bunch of new stuff for the holidays and a month after that there will be a shit ton of clearance items.
>tfw I don't even have room in my tackle box for more hard baits
I almost bought a little Yamamoto Baby Bass popper but I already have a bunch and can only use them for like a month before the water gets too warm.
>>876262
I have the 1000FA, has 7lbs of drag.
What type of rod and line should I get for my Abu Garcia ambassador 6500s. I got the reel for pretty much free. I go off of peir and surf fish in California.
>>876331
>keeps buying tackle
>uses the same Texas rig soft plastic every time
Wew lad... just... wew...
>>876347
Just gettin ready for winter. The 3 months they will bite something other than T-rigged soft baits.
What do you think? 11lbs or closer to 9lbs?
This lake has to have some nice bass in it but I just can't figure out where they are.
>>876178
>Those look undersized
Smallest one was 19andahalf inches
Fed my family of 4 for three days.
>>876361
Fuck. Gotta get a couple more casts in before I get struck by lightning. Right at sunset too, the best time to have a line in the water.
Finally caught something today
>>876347
>keeps buying tackle
That's a huge problem with most anglers. Consumerism is a high order trait with them.
>>876409
>>876347
I spend like $25 every week or two on stuff. It's not too bad. Piles up quick though. I need to chill and grab another memecaster one of these days.
>>876420
>spends a grand a year on bass tackle
>only fishes ponds for dink lmb's
oh boy.
>>876426
I've spent much more than a grand in the past 12mos.
Well I took the yak out and didn't catch shit. Super windy. Got a qts number tho so I guess it's alright.
I had one bite and I guess my drag got bumped super low because when I set the hook all it did was pull out line and the fish spit it out. Might go out tomorrow.
>>876420
>It's not too bad
>$1,300 a year in fishing tackle
Well, at least it isn't an actual vice.
Maybe open up a tackle shop.
>>876428
end it my man
>>876435
TXfag is worse than me
And my tackle shop would carry nothing but Mepps and Rapalas.
At least when I die, maybe I will have kids to pass the stuff on to and they can sell it all for 200CNY
>CUBS!!!
>>876435
And if you think that's bad, you should see how much I spend on cigs
>>876442
I feel like you buy lures more often, but I buy a lot of them at once.
>>876260
My catfish reel is a 4500 and a 5000
Granted a 15 pound cat is the most I'd have to deal with here but I plan on bolting a daiwa opus 5000 to something or other 8' maybe to be a cobia jig rod or something
Something around 70 bucks (over all 140 dollar combo) maybe an uglystik tiger rod

Buy a rolling station, an old tin cigarette carryer. And some rolling papers and a 1lb or 5lb bag of tobacco and its considerably cheaper. As tobacco in a bag doesnt get taxed like cigs.
>>876486
Why not a pipe instead? At least the selection of flavors expands almost infinitely and buying in bulk is super cheap.
>>876486
>As tobacco in a bag doesnt get taxed like cigs.
It does now with new regs
>>876485
It's overrated. It all goes just as fast as it comes.
>>876491
Really? When did they change that? I thought it was still really cheap.
>>876486
Fuck that. I just need to quit.
When I was going to school in Chicago, everybody bought rollies like that because cigs were $10-$12 a pack. I would just go out of Crook county and buy cartons. So whenever I would be partying with people, everybody would bum cigs because the Buglers were so shitty.
>>876495
http://www.fda.gov/ForConsumers/ConsumerUpdates/ucm506676.htm
Cigars and pipe bacco too. Probably one see a big difference in price for at least a few years and it'll still be cheaper than cigs. Just not as cheap.
I know ecig juice is already getting more expensive.
>>876499
Yes, but the fda is getting their paws into the loose tobacco now where as before it was basically unregulated.
>>876502
I'm glad on the ecig juice laws because it will crush all those little shops where vapefags hang out and get their custom mixes and talk about their badass mods.
Where would y'all fish at in this lake? The sides are mostly brush/weeds which is where I was targeting today. The bank closest to the highway is riprap. Any spot stand out to anyone?
>>876505
I vape, but I hate vape culture. It's worse than weed culture.
>>876510
You got the 'yak? I would find where the drop-offs are on the north side by those little creeks or outlets. But it's so random, the typical spots like that will normally produce but there are sometimes random unexpected spots that hit the best.
>>876431
Nic where is that at?
>>876475
Then you have 18k for a BRAND NEW boat, and then 2k for a kickass cooler, gas, maybe some outriggers for trolling, some extra big shit (130 pound power pro, and a high end rod/reel combo to chase Goliath grouper, sharks, tuna, etc with in his boat) and a fighting belt
Maybe some crab and lobster traps too
Don't forget a cooler and a power pole for the flats
>Pepsi spends over $550 USD/mo on cigs

Get a cane pole and some worms and fish up some perch.
Put a slip weight on your line then a swivel.
Tie a 15 inch leader to the swivel and end it with a number 5 circle hook.
Hook your rig up with a perch and cast it out.
If you have a reel with a good clicker like a Penn then reel in your slack set the clicker and set to free spool.
No clicker real in slack and set the drag real loose and put a bell on the tip of your rod.
When you get a bite just tighten down on him dont jerk it to set the hook.
Enjoy your catfish or gar.

>>876978
ALWAYS check before you buy them. Minorities shop at Walmart. They will open a second worm container and pick the worms out so they have like 30 in one container and the other only has 6 in there.
The fishing section at the one closest to me is so fucked up. People will do the same thing with artificial lures and hooks too. They will open a second bag of Zoom worms, put half of them into the bag they are buying, and leave the other one. So there are always a couple 20pks of plastic worms with only 9 or 10 in there.
And they will take a $10 Rapala, put it in the box of some $2 generic bait, and leave the cheap shitty one in the Rapala box.
>>876979

>The fishing section at the one closest to me is so fucked up. People will do the same thing with artificial lures and hooks too. They will open a second bag of Zoom worms, put half of them into the bag they are buying, and leave the other one. So there are always a couple 20pks of plastic worms with only 9 or 10 in there.

Walmart fucking sucks. Sorry to hear it mate. I'd recommend trying to find a tackle shop or starting your own small worm farm. Red worms are super easy to raise desu. Startup costs under $50 for a farm means that if you use your own worms just a couple times you come out with a net positive.
I've found that fishing worms I do better than with plastics or anything else. Some people probably find it lame but hey I save money on tackle. But, I started my worm farms to turn my trash into fertilizer

Interesting, did some research and there are a few rare species of green worms but they aren't common unless you are EU. It is also possible to feed worms food dye to make them change color, perhaps that is what the bait shop does?
>>877221
ill take pictures sometime this week when i head out there and buy some. they are also super chunky
food dye sounds right, when i mixed them in with those red worms they sell at walmart they started turning green also

Kinda sounds like a gimmick to me but I'd definitely buy some if I saw them, just to keep them around and see if they stay green lol

Less mechanical brake (the knob on the handle side) and either thumbing the spool (occasionally slowing it slightly with your thumb) or more magnetic/cetrafugal brake (dial opposite the handle)
>>877213
I remember those from back in the day. Just nightcrawlers that are fed some weird shit I think.
>>877219
Less brakes, less spool tension, heavier lure, lighter line, and you gotta get the casting action down. Just be careful loosening the brakes and tension if you are new to memecasters because you gotta get the casting motion down before you can really huck it with no brakes. They don't like lob casts like you do with spinning reels, it helps to throw it more flat.
And I have been trying to figure out whether or not the placement of the line guide makes a difference while casting. I feel like if I center it before casting, I get maybe an extra 5%-10% distance but it could just be all in my head.
>>877226
>>877227
>>877221
It is something with what they feed them. I remember putting regular nightcrawlers into the container with dirt the green ones came in and they started to change colors.
I don't think it made a huge difference as far as the catch went but some days any little advantage can help.

Really? They have always served hash browns since they started it around here a year or two ago. But it was a real limited menu, like McMuffins, breakfast burritos, and has browns. They just extended it to almost the whole breakfast menu a couple weeks ago.
It has to suck for the people working there though. With fast food places like that, keeping the menu simple is one of the biggest things to getting the food out fast and being able to hire complete retards and gay furfags. A few years back they really downsized and got rid of the chicken strips and a bunch of sandwiches that used different patties and buns.

Same as any other fish really. You have like 4 choices, fried, boiled, roasted/grilled, and baked. It all depends on how large a fish you catch and how well you do at filleting them. Everything after that is just personal taste.

how would you describe the taste? A lot of the rednecks who fish around me claim that they are bad or have a "mud vein", but they are all retards and suck at fishing anyway so i don't believe them.
>>877355
in my experience every fish that has a stigma about being bad to eat is bullshit.
99% of the time someone tells you a fish is gross they've never tried it and it's just what their dad said, their grandpa, and their great grandpa. That shit just gets passed down and around and everyone believes it.
Carp is fantastic, hardhead saltwater catfish is great, jack crevalle is great, and although I haven't tried sucker I'm sure it'd be fine too. Maybe not choice, but it certainly wont taste bad. Just take one home someday.
>>877357
that's what i plan to do tomorrow. I just went out in the rain and gathered a ton of nightcrawlers up as bait, it's the only thing i can get suckers to bite. Even though i've never kept any, i'm starting to get decent at catching them. I can give out some tips or techniques if anyone wants them
>>877357
Carp is good like racoon is good. You nigger. Spotted the nigger guys...
>>877362
Sucker on not worms 101
Get a 4-5 weight fly rod
And pheasant tail nymphs size 10-20
Tie up a 4x leader and a 6x leader
Turn over rocks until you find a bug looking thing
Match its size with a pheasant tail (if its between sizes go smaller)
Tie it on to the tippit under an indicator and dead drift it in spots that look fishy
Make sure it bounces bottom
You'll hook into something
>>877355
I don't remember them tasting bad or anything. Just about everything has some retarded myth about it. The most I know about is that some fish will have a slightly yellowish tinge to the meat on the top near the head. It will be more "fishy" than the rest of the meat due to higher fatty oils, but I've seen that in a few species and it comes and goes due to diet/spawning season I think. It is easy to omit since there's less than a 1/4" of it normally.
It seems that most myths about fish taste comes from middle-lower class and higher who are just completely ignorant about anything that isn't on Bassmasters or at Cracker Barrel.

Shit nigga I fill my freezer with them in the spring during the spawning run. I am fortunate enough to live in a place with clean water and they taste great. They are in fact seriously bony though, so I always grind them unless I am in the mood for picking through bones. Very low on mercury for a freshwater fish, too. Might be a bit worse if you are dragging them out of a muddy shithole of a river which is the only place you can find them in a lot of places.
>>877394
It depends on the mercury pollution content of the waterway, not on the mud. They eat insects and invertebrates and are usually okay to eat, but once a week in moderately polluted areas. You really have to google your local waterways and the consumption advisories though.
>>877398
I meant that they might taste worse out of crappy water. I know the fish in my area are low on mercury because I have checked the consumption guidelines for my area, and even normally mercury laden predator fish like pike and walleye have pretty liberal consumption advisories so a fish with a diet like a sucker should be fine.

Unfortunately, picture doesn't do fish justice. Cool looking rainbow with a brilliant orange stripe on its side.
>>877419
Can't tell, what fly you catch that dink on?
So I was out. Catching blue gill an bass. An was having a pretty good night up until the end..
Some group walks behind me clearly sees I've got a fishing pole an am casting out into the water. And normally I wait for people to pass but a bass was slapping the top of the water so I needed to get my lure out there. My rod is 7'6" and my hook/lure was dangling 4 inches from the tip of line slack. I pulled it straight up aligned with my shoulders and flung it out..
This stupid bitch walking by in the group. Goes "geeze buddy watch where you're casting that almost hit me in the face" with like this bitch tone of voice.. I have only sisters.. I know the tone well... I said nothing... And just kinda looked at her an focused on fishing, even though I wanted to so badly to say something. And shes about 25 yards away from me and turns back and looks at me with her stupid bitch face like shes trying to figure out if ive said anything yet. I just kinda shot her a look like "nah dumb bitch you aren't worthy of these words"
Hopefully my reaction to her idiotic reaction pissed her off more then me saying anything at all. And she was like 5 feet three, max! So there's no chance in hell my lure or hook came anywhere near her face. And she was in the middle of the group and two guys where closer to me. And litearlly none of them even looked at me or said a fucking word, just this bitch was the only one with a problem...
I'm gonna fish for MACKEREL. What's the cheapest possible bait (should be effective too).
>>877503
>The most effective way of catching mackerel is to use a string of feathers. These basic lures are retrieved through the water, mimicking small bait fish, such as sandeels, which is the staple diet of mackerel.
>>877506

>>876011
Caught a bowfin today! Looked up how people eat these fuckers. Ate her. All 3 of us were full. That's noteworthy around these parts.
They are good in my currently limited experience.... and the fight was spectacular on ultra light tackle.
>>877538
you don't want to eat one much bigger than that. tastes like fried cotton balls
>>877525
Find a white chicken (rooster preferred), take some hackle feathers from around the neck. Use regular sewing thread to attach 1 feather to a hook. Tie the quill of the feather to the hook then wrap the feather around the hook, leaving the tail of the feather exposed, tie it in place with the thread. Snip it and use epoxy, fingernail polish, or super glue to affix the thread solidly in place. You can use weighted jig hooks or plain hooks.
Sand eels are about 4-6 inches long and 1/4" wide, so the amount you wrap the feather around the hook will determine the length of the lure. If you want it really long, don't wrap it. Hackle feathers can be pretty long sometimes. You can cut them shorter to make them look better if you don't want to wrap them around the hook.
Tie several hooks together along some fishing line. Google images for "gang troll" or "lake troll" to see the kind of spacing you need and look up knots. You can either have each feather have a hook or just the last feather in the line.

>>877538
Fucking jealous. Up here in MN you sometimes see them or get bit off by them while bass fishing, but they are still pretty rare. I haven't caught one in 4 years. They average so much bigger than the bass up north and they fight a lot harder, such a fun fish. The only downside is that they destroy lures like nothing else I have ever caught, I was using a weedless spoon once and a bowfin dented it up so bad that it wouldn't run through the water right!
>>877379
Dude. Raccoon is delicious. Absolutely top tier.

>>877794
If you really like "greasy" dark meats. Duck, squirrel, raccoon, and opossum are all much the same. I personally can't stand them; same with turtle. Give me venison and catfish any day. Snake is "okay" but bothersome to get enough for a meal and they squirm when cooking.
>>877807
Parboil them quickly after skinning and gutting.
You get a thick fatty film at the top of the water. Discard it.
It makes the meat much more palatable. Then you smoke it for a few hours and slap some barbecue sauce on it. Fucking better than pork.
Snake is good. I have had two roadkill eastern diamondbacks. Skin, cut into 6" log-type chunks, batter and fry. Meat should come off of the bone like a whole bream.

i'm the guy who was asking about how to cook suckers, and if they are good to eat.
I went fishing for around 5 hours, but i didn't catch any suckers. It had rained pretty heavily the past few days, so the river was pretty high and muddy, and the park i usually fish in was closed, so i had to try other spots. I did catch a ton of rock bass and smallies though.
I have another question now, does anyone know how to catch bullheads in a river, and where they would hang out in a river?
>>877953
You'd probably increase your chances a lot by going at night, Also people say worms are really good. Not sure about location, I imagine they would be in deep and slow areas.
>>877503
cheapest?
> mackerel fishing in socal pier
> bring a very small amount of shrimp or squid
> use small piece of shrimp or squid as bait
> catch one mackerel, cut up the mackerel into small pieces for more bait
> catch even more mackerel
> continue until you get a lot of mackerel
Larger sabiki rig is also very fun to use, but they get fucked up after one trip or after a bad tangle (happen a lot when there are 2+ mackerel on the line)
>>877953
Either chicken livers in pantyhose or spawn sacks (that weird mesh people put eggs in for salmon- its at any outdoors shop. Its nice for bullhead cause it gives a smaller presentation)
Or nightcrawlers
For the livers either tie them in spawn sacks or pantyhose and hook the spawn sack to an octopus circle hook (I like 2/0 for small stuff but 3/0 is good too)
For crawlers put the whole worm on a #2-2/0 baitholder hook
Ask a bait shop if they have any dead baitfish you can have I have good luck putting dead minnows or shiners on my hook with the worm
Fish slow areas with weeds nearby and fish just outside the weeds with one rid and in the main channel with the other
I'd say go medium heavy with 15 pound test because sometimes you'll get a Chanel cat and they get to be 15 pounds easy or a turtle
For rigging I like to do a dropper loop rig or a fish finder rig
Good luck

>>878051
>>878041

Make a loop of #30-#50 mono then hold it against the shank of the hook
Tie a Snell around the heavy mono and the mono wasn't there and when you tighten the Snell just make sure the heavy mono stays towards the inside of the bend
Clip the three tags and you're done
I suppose you could do with a drop of super glue but I don't think its nessesary

Foam beetles size 6-12 (good indicator pattern for mid to late summer) I'd get some ants too (10-14)
Get some Adams and rusty spinners for mayfly hatches (I'd say 10-16 will cover most of every mayfly) I'd set some smaller stimulators, some elkhair caddis flies, and most importantly black wooly buggers size 8-12

Catfish are bottom feeders and taste like mud as a result. There's a joke in the south of serving catfish to tourists and telling them it's a delicacy whilst everyone in the know keks that they're actually eating it.
Best eating fish are trout and salmon.
>>878175
small channel catfish absolutely do not taste like mud whatsoever, if they weren't good why would it be one of the most common fish served in restauraunts?
>>877709
I guess new anglers that read up on wanted-dead species and immediately started killing snek like fish. That's pretty much me although the fishing digest made it clear not to kill bowfin
>>878176
Because when it comes to food, often the most accessible and cheap meat is popularized and there is a social standard that the meat is good. I'd agree any meat would taste good and all, just saying that the food industry picks certain things to serve. Also, catfish isn't something popular like salmon in my state so tourist would probably find catfish as a unique thing; a good selling point

Catfish in general are not "bottom feeders". At least not game species of catfish. Of those in North America only the Channel Catfish is more of an opportunist in eating dead things. All of the N.A. game species of catfish are predators. They follow and eat baitfish for the most part.

Fish in restaurants are normally farmed fish, unless otherwise stated as being "wild caught". Farmed fish are normally fed waste products from the fishing industry as a whole. Due to this source of fish food, man made pollution is more concentrated into farmed fish; sometimes as much as ten times more concentrated than in wild caught fish.
Always make sure you ask the source for the fish and don't eat it if it is farmed fish.

Never heard of any one using less than a 2 weight
I imagine you're not going to be able to cast much or very far but good luck

its mostly to throw in my backpack hiking near streams to fish small ponds, puddles, ditches, creeks, etc. from videos I've seen using the rod I expect to be able to cast up to maybe 20ft with some work

It's a Penn, it was made to be used not displayed.
You do it a disservice by not letting it preform.
For the the fly fishermen.
How much do you guys think it would cost to into fly fishing for bass, trout, and pan fish? I want to get a quality setup but i'm not familiar with the specifics of how the rods, reels, line, and flys are different from each other.
Recommendations are welcome as long as they arnt cheap gear that will just get me by (talking to you skid). I need something good that will last me years. thanks in advance

Where the hell is Mainebub? He actually knew a little bit about fly fishing without giving some retarded DIY overly complicated suggestion.
New thread gonna be coming soon so you may want to post it again when that one goes up.

about $100 for entry level, best it you don't know if you're going to stick with it. $200-300 if you want what you actually posted and intend to keep it.
craigslist if you want to spend under $200 for good shit that you can sell for what you paid if you give it up.
$800+ if you want to go for top end stuff.

This is pretty sound advice, actually. I also highly recommend craigslist. I basically just stole an old Lamiglas last night for next to nothing.
