Wasn't sure if I would be able to post this after that cocksucker Matther rolled through, but we got lucky and ol' KVD still has power and cell service so let the dinkposting resume!

Skid might be beating me on the dinkposting lately.
>"""Microfishing"""
Why not just jig for bluegill and crappie instead? At least when the bass aren't biting, I can toss out a 1" Gulp minnow on a 1/32oz jighead with the UL and get a little fight from a Mayan.

You guys ready for /an/ to merge with /out/? I'm sure we will experience lots of cunts within the fishing and hunting threads. It can't be worse than /o/ merge into /n/ though. Things are never pretty when cars meet trains and cyclists.

Microfishing originated in Japan as the sport of "tenkara fishing" for a type of tiny japanese fish. It spread from there and a more encompassing term "microfishing" was developed and used by non-japanese.
>>
>>871322
Tenkara is a type of flyfishing that originated in the mountains of Japan by end keepers to feed the guests at their inn
Microfishing did originate in Japan but it is not tenkara

That girl looks like a great lay. Super skinny girls are no fun. You end up with sore balls n stuff afterward from smacking against bone with Mrs. Skelltal.
>>
Do you think is there an actual name for poor fishing?
I like just to go as cheap as possible not because im poor, what of course I am, but I find it of an interesting practice, being eco, using homemade tackle, natural baits, as many equipment as barely necessary, using same two rods for almost everything...
I also like to keep the catch, so I only fish for catchable species. I like preparing and try cooking them in different ways.

Yeah it usually sucks. Last weekend tho this dad and his son roll up on my spot. I groaned internally but the kid was like 14 or 15 and walked straight up to me and started asking questions about my rig. He was respectful and called me sir and genuinely was interested so I told him about what I was doing. he was getting skunked hard with his gear which was rigged up in the silliest/laziest way possible. Then his dad chimes in and makes it clear that he is 100% clueless and just bringing his kid because the kid loves fishing. Turns out the kid got into fishing at a young age because he watched a ton of youtube videos from 1rod1reel, APbassin, extreme philly fishing, etc. He was shocked I knew about who they were and lit up when I brought up a few of myself. I gave him some hooks and nightcrawler like I was using and he started catching tons of bluegill. When I was leaving I heard him and his dad fighting because he "couldn't leave yet this is the best fishing of my entire life"

>sometimes kids aren't shit tier

>>871529
The speedo going higher than the top speed in trucks like that is actually useful. They are so heavy that even on a mild downhill road, they pick up speed really fast. It is nothing like a car. That's the same reason the tach goes up to 4000rpm when the thing only revs to just over 2000. If you need to engine brake on a steep grade, you don't even want to take the thing out of gear or you might not be able to get it back in because you are picking up speed so fast.
>>
>>871535
Provably the samevreasom they'd put a starter motor behind a piece of frame; so you spend more money

Ehh, it kinda makes sense where they put the starters. With the large flywheel, that small motor gets some torque when trying to turn over the engine. They could put it on the front by the accessories, but it would need some sort of gear reduction system and would be all complicated or they would need a flywheel on the front of the engine and then you gotta put the water pump and alternator and shit somewhere else.

Well you just had to have that boxer engine to be different. And slightly lower CoG. The lower CoG is a result of things like spark plugs being on the side of the engine instead of on top.

And 6" is a lot when it comes to that shit. Designers draw it and then engineers figure out how they can build the thing using the parts they have.

Yeee boi

I got 3 little peacocks and that one largemouth. But missed out on a pic of the first two which were probably 8" each because they are squirmy little fucks. When you lip largemouth, they normally chill out. Not peacocks.

Also I think they just bred. I saw a bigger one and threw out a little shakey head jig. The soft bait got attacked by like 50 tiny ones and the big one was chasing the other fish away.

That lake has convicts and I haven't caught one of those yet which was why I broke out the UL stuff but those things are skittish and scatter as soon as a 1/32oz jighead hits the water.

I'm excited about these soft baits. The Zoom Finesse Worms are like two of the best colors combined so they should definitely get attention. The PowerBait ones are only 4" long and reccommend a 1/0 worm hook so they should be a good finesse bait.

And the red Zoom U-Tale worms, I have no idea. I just wanted to try red.

>>871735
Anon pls. Just because you jelly of my skillz, you don't gotta cry about it.

I also caught a fucking duck today. I hate those things. They are way too comfortable around people since people feed them. The line was getting tangled up in his feet, then I tried to lift the line out of the water and it got wrapped around his neck. So I was trying to pull it a little bit and maybe untangle this bird but didn't want to choke him and ended up having to cut like 20yds of braid off.

If you are gonna take advantage of the sale, I reccommend going soon. I think it just started yesterday and goes for a week but when they have good sales the popular stuff tends to run out fast.

I purposely went to the slowest Dick's out of the 4 or 5 in the area. At least it's the slowest for freshwater fishing.

I can't even do them from shore on most of these lakes because of the drop-offs. Most of these lakes are manmade and they have a steep and rocky drop-off ~10' from shore and the heavy jigs get caught up. I'd rather just throw a Texas rig.

Even the one lake where the average size bass is like 3lbs, I have thrown jigs while getting bites on other stuff just to see if they actually work and it just ends up in frustration when they get hung up.

I bought some smaller ones awhile back and I might need to give those a try. I think the warm water keeps the bass from hitting large baits as much. Idk. The chatterbaits have great action and seem like they should work well (at the least a good dusk or dark lure) but the bass don't touch them.
>>
>>871750
your definition of lake is different from mine. When I say lake I mean at least 1,000 square acres of water, and even that is very small compared to the two main lakes I fish

The junebug chartruese? Yeah those look neat. On the other chartruese tail ones with the watermelon or pumpkin body, fish tend to just grab the tail a lot but I'm hoping the junebug part will stand out enough where they grab the whole thing.

Care to write up a noob introduction to pier fishing? The first time I went was a disaster. The local pier is like 2 stories tall above the water which makes it super challenging. Are you vertical jigging?
>>

We need something like that on pier fishing, surf fishing, river fishing, and fly fishing.

I did the starter guide for lake and pond shore fishin, I would def be down to put others in the Pastebin.
>>
>>872027
First of all, what state are you in and what pier did you go to? Juno is pretty low.

Rods and reels
-7' to 7'6" rod with a 3000-4000 sized reel for throwing lures at smaller fish
-8'-9' rod with a 5000-8000 sized reel for throwing heavier lures at larger and more powerful fish
-7'-8' rod with a liveliner spinner or a conventional reel with a clicker for using live or cut bait

Line
-use mono if you are fishing in an area with a lot of rocks and for the bait rod since it's easy for the fish to notice the braid since the rig will not be moving
-use braid for your lure rods with a 2'-3' flouro leader, use between 15#-50# depending on the fish and how rocky the pier is
-use wire only for kingfish or blues if you keep getting cut off

Lures
>white crappie jigs Carolina rigged with a 1 oz weight for moonfish and hardtails
>rapala x-raps, gotcha plugs, diamond jigs and spoons for macks, jacks and blues
>doc's goofy jigs for pompano
>gulfstream flair hawks, larger x-raps and spoolteks for snook

Rigs
>caroline rig with a 1-5oz egg sinker for using live bait
>hi lo rig for whitting, croakers and other small fish

I'll write more latter

>Pretty neat. Kinda like panfish most times in freshwater. I'd be using those things as the bait though.

They aren't as small as they look in the picture, they're each between 12 and 20 inches. The wood floor you see there isn't a bunch of 2x4"s its much bigger.
>>
>>872303
it comes with a gimbal mount that is very basic. you can attach it to whatever and i've got mine on a removable box that I keep a 12v feeder battery in.

down imaging gives you an image of whatever falls in a narrow oval approximately as wide as the depth of the water its in. so if you're in 15ft of water it'll show you whats on the bottom 7.5ft on each side from the center of your boat. side image projects directly from the sides instead of down so it's only limited by how much water is inbetween you and the shore.

it works together with the down imaging module of the transducer so you also get an image of the water column below the boat. look up the guide on humminbird's website

you'll need to do a little bit of electrical work to get it hooked up to a power source but all it takes its some butt connectors, heat shrink, and some crimpers/strippers

Any tips on catching steelhead/salmon. I have been out on the river for the past few weeks drifting roe on a float and I am contemplating suicide. I can see the Salmon run up the river but they won't even look at the roe. Yesterday I climbed up some rocks overlooking a pool with a fish in it. I put it right in front of its face and it didn't even bother with it. What am I doing wrong.
>>

You might be spooking them, you might have too much roe on your hook, they could just not be hungry
I've never landed a steelhead and I've only ever hooked one
Try different baits?
>>
>>872433
>>872429
Just try to stay low keep as much line out of the water as possible, don't make noise, keep changing baits (if you've used roe for a week with nothing obviously they dont want roe)
Try to land baits delicately in the water make sure you're deep enough (if you're not getting snagged now and then go deeper) etc

If you suck that much without spoon feeding then just find a rocky area and move your lure near the rocks and hope you don't lose them before fishes take them.

That's really only because of commercialization of sport fishing. Saltwater has the same problems. It is only the enlightened among us that realize you only need the barest of bait or lure to do the job and it is more about when, where, and weather than anything else.

Does anyone know how to catch spawning salmon? I just spent 4 hours out on the river surrounded by 3-foot chinook salmon that I couldn't get to bite on anything. I ran every lure I could past their faces dozens of times and none of them would even react. Do I have to use salmon eggs as bait or something?
>>
>>872806
They're a lot like spawning bass in that you have to really piss them off to get them to hit. They're not hungry during the spawn, but you can heckle them into striking if you dance a fly in their personal space and heckle them with it consistently
>>
>>872806
Oh, and it helps to be stealthy. Just because they're in the river doesn't mean you have to be, try casting a ways out from up on the bank so they're not as wary if you have some room
>>
>>872806
You don't. You snag them. There's all manner of laws concerning exactly how you are allowed to snag them and what ones you must release if the hook was in the wrong place. So, look up snagging laws for salmon in you area.

Yes most do because most don't live on the ocean
Those that do are lucky
Some learn on trout some learn on salt water but the vast majority get their start on bluegill
>>
>>872935
Oh, I was on my phone and thought he was quoting the guy who caught the pumpkinseed and saying he caught one too and stomped it
>>
>>872936
Fair enough. It's funny to me because there is only one place within 2hrs of me that I know of with bluegill and I didn't catch one until I'd already been fishing a long time. Living next to the ocean is a blessing in many ways but the freshwater fishing here is like D- tier

Santa Cruz, CA. For fresh water, there is a 6 acre pond open year round but >90% of the bank is inaccessible by foot due to thick vegetation (trees, reeds, etc). There is a nice river but it is only open 3 months of the year and the state can say "nahhh fuck you" and cancel the season for whatever reason. There is a lake in the mountains open 6 months a year with decent freshwater fishing, thats where the bluegill is and I caught my PB bass there ~1.5lbs, probably a dink by most people's standards. The saltwater fishing is plentiful though, I can't complain, there are sandy beaches, rocky cliffs, piers, jetties, you name it. The bay has a great fishery because commiefornia liberals and their extremist environmental policies. This past weekend was the final weekend the lake is open for the year so I'm back 2 the salt until december when I hopefully will get to take a crack at salmon and steelhead, but the past few years it has been closed due to drought. Pic related, it's the average size bass 'round here

>bass
Seems like you've almost got your bases covered.

You also need some jerk baits, a few swim baits, and a buzz bait. THEN you'll be ready to catch bass.
>>
>>872998
I have literally never heard someone recommend 1000000 different baits for bass. Every conversation I've had has been like

>What fish do you want?
>What color is the water?
>Vegetation?
>Try x

NOONE suggests walking into dicks and buying one of everything, and the people who do that just enjoy collecting lures. You really think pepsi feels like he HAS to have all the shit he does to be a better angler? I've got a fuck ton of lures and the only species I target are speckled trout and redfish and regardless of my 100s of lures I still only use two of them on a consistent basis.
>>
>>873080
Yeah the guy at my local tackle shop said 90% of the time he's using 1 of 3 plastics (2 colors of 2 and 1 color of 1 so a total of 5 different baits)
>>

Some don't leak at all, others are inside ziploc bags. All the Gulp is in a seperate 3700 box.

The Gulp Alive buckets with green lids can't close properly. Had one that was left in a fishing backpack and put in the garage, forgot about it and after a few months I noticed a weird smell in there and found the packs inner completely covered in mold.
I keep them in a extra bag now.
>>
>>873152
Yeah they need to figure out a better way to seal those things. Like 75% of the bags like to leak a bit. Never had the big jars, but the little jars have actually been good for me.

parking? I pay If im feeling lazy and want to pop the back of the van, drink beers, fish and look at tourist chicks but usually I park on 2nd near las palmas and roll my pier cart (radio flyer wagon) there. during winter the boardwalk slows down and the manager at edgewater lets me park in their lot so it looks like at least somebody is staying there.

rigs I use a few different ones depending on whats around but usually throw swimbaits and spoons. for baits a high low rig or sliders the most. I bring a throw net to get bait. smelt anchovy mackerel and use them for halibut in the surf line. going further out towards the end on the pier youll need heavier gear. more weight and seals, star fish and crabs will fuck with your baits..but larger macs and other fish are around as long as you can beat the seals.
I like the concrete ship more than sc pier but its a further drive for me so i only hit it on the weekends or morning sessions on my kayak
kayaks are hella cheap in sc, look on cl. a paddle to the point to sit in the kelp youll hook up a lot easier than on the piers
buy some sabiki's and a can of fishy cat food to use as chum. youll get plenty of baits for the day. 5 gallon bucket with a lid and a bubbler will keep some of the baits alive for bit.
the south side sc towards the surf has been on fire in the evenings for halibut with sliders. I would stay in the surf for a little longer. theres still plenty of perch and a few stripers to be had. last week someone caught a salmon in the surf at rio del mar. kind of weird. pic related. perch crack. get some.
>>
>>873261
Thanks anon. I've been meaning to try the concrete ship, is the pier open? Last j heard it shut down when the ship started shifting. I have a ton of gulp worms, what are those swimmers? I mostly surf fish with fairly light tackle (light action rod, 2500 size reel, 10lb braid mainline), should I get heavier gear for the pier or just stay away from the end? Have you hooked a seal?

And if you don't want to put in the effort to weave one, you can just use plastic water bottles. Pic related is obviously a bit small, use 5 liter water bottles instead and make the opening bigger if you need to. Also cut in some small holes in the sides so the air gets out more easily, don't make them too big or smaller fishes might steal your bait.

If you don't have to be sneaky, you can also build a dam with stones and sticks, which will force the fishes into the trap. If you use the bottle variant, then you have to cut more holes on the bottom though, so the water can flow through better.

yeah i like the DI. dont really need the SI because I use it on the open salt water. the images you see with the DI are amazing. I use the split screen, DI and sonar. with DI you dont really see the fish only the structure but with the sonar you can pick out the fish arches and target at that depth. I like that i can actually see my jig bouncing on the fishfinder. my lowrance didnt do any of that. I have to find the link for the lowrance sale tho' at the prices they were selling them for I'm sure theyve all been scooped by now.

Been using an Abu Ike frog rod but it's about $100 more than what you've linked. Not quite a broomstick but stout enough for a lot of the thick, matted grass we get here mid-to-late summer. Get a high-speed retrieve reel and pair it with some 25+ lb braid to handle the nasty stuff.

If you're not planning on frogging thick cover I'd recommend setting up like you would for any other topwater setup. My main open-water topwater setup is an Abu Veritas. Moderate action and medium power if I recall correctly. I use a Revo S with 12 lb mono and it's great for walking frogs/spooks or throwing poppers out.

Of course I'm an Abu whore and you can achieve the same for less with something like Bass Pro's Johnny Morris line of rods/reels which seem to be well liked and quite reputable.

piers closed thats why I mentioned the kayak in the morning before the winds pick up. its a fun place for me to kayak fly fish because of the schools of baitfish around the ship. capitola is hit or miss and I ride my skateboard down first to see if anyone is getting anything. In the pic the fish looking ones are gulp minnows in 2 sizes. the others are gulp camo worms 2" size. Pinch a bit off the top and thread on #6 or 8. work pretty good for surf perch but if you plan on fishing surf here a lot I suggest you make a sand flea rake. perch and stripers love sand fleas. light surf gear works for sp at the beach and maybe to make bait but you need a crab net to get any bigger fish you catch up to you. foul hooked a bat ray with a lc110 and it nearly spooled me on a 4000 size reel and had to ask a old asian dude next to me if i could borrow his net to get it up. If you hook a legal halibut you wont be able to bounce it over the rail with 10lb braid so yeah maybe something a little bigger is ideal because of the piers height.
I use a 100 size with 10lb braid and a 10' noodle rod for sabikis, fun setup when smelt are around and a 300lexa 30lb braid 20lb wind on with a mh swimbait rod for live bait and throwing swimbaits. And yeah ive hooked and been spooled by a seal before. seals dont give a fuck. Also you know you can rent boats and kayaks there right? Its a easy paddle to the kelp beds. lots of fun rockfish lings perch ect..to catch. Another area is the points on sea cliffs going towards natural bridges if youre into cliff fishing..

Thanks for the great advice. I'll probably pick up a new MH rod for the pier. I don't want to have to cut my line or risk breaking the light rod by trying to land a big fish. I have a penn fierce 5000 size reel spooled with 40lb braid I can use with it. Unfortunately I'm a poor swimmer so I probably have no business dicking around on the water
>>
>>873622
I reccomend a daiwa beefstick

>>
>>873687

Yeah they are cool, it is hard to tell from the pic but the connection between the paddle and body is almost paper thin so I imagine that the action is insane on them. I think it will drive the bass wild at my local pond where it is all dinks, usually my small plastics get tons of bites there
>>
>>873699
>>873692
I could have explained it better. I've seen small fly hooks but the thing I am most shocked about is the gauge of the wire used for them
>>
>>873706
They look thinner than the line they're tied to
Hella
>>873704
I'd honestly put them under a tiny float and reel them just fast enough for the tail to move
>>873697
>>873687
Also what's the ugly stick rod like? I imagine its a heavy noodle
>>
>>873718
I've caught a few fish on it, never once had it bend. It's sensitive enough though. I don't have a weight on it but it's probably coming close to 2 pounds - very heavy. However, my 7ft Ultra Light uglystik is a beast of a rod.
>>
>>873718
Also, why the float? Why not just cast and reel in?I dont think there are any bluegill in this pond
>>
>>873727
I'd do the float so it gets a nice consistent depth, so it doesn't sink much on pauses, and you can cast a jig with a float farther than just a jig
But that's just my opinion
>>873726
I hate my ul ugly stick
I want something cheap 6-7 feet with a faster action
I have trouble loading my ugkystik for a cast too
I'd be just as well off with a 15 foot pole with 12 feet of line 9 times out of 10 for anything under 1/8 oz
Whish is sad for an ultralight
>>
>>873733
Have you tried using a Pitching Cast (vid) or Side Cast? I don't overhead cast with mine, but the pitch or side cast I can get fantastic casts. I just got a St. Croix Panfish UL 5ft6 pole today in the mail, but they have the same rod in a couple lengths in the range you mentioned.

Mina are Cabela's brand neoprene stocking foot and I like the.
Just make sure to rig something up to hang them by
I'd reccinend going to Lowes and buying PVC and fittings to build a small rack
Get two 1 1/2 inch10 foot pvc pipes and one 3 foot 1/12 inch cut them so you have two pieces 6 feet long and 4 pieces 2 feet long and leave the 3 footer alone
You'll also need two (2) 90° fittings, two (2) 't' fittings, and four (4) end caps
Take the end caps, t fittings, and 2 foot lengths, then glue those together so you have two lengths that go endcap, PVC, t fitting, PVC, endcap
That is your base
Once its all solid glue your 6 feet lengths into the t fittings
Lastly use your 90° elbow fittings to connect both sides of the rack and you're nearly done
Duct tape the end caps so they don't slide around or scratch anything and its done
The only possibility is if your waders are heavy is the base might splay apart and if it does just run some string between the base of the two uprights and you're set
It should take 30 minutes to put together honestly (not counting glie drying times) and cost under 15 dollars if you already have tools and pvc cement
And if bare PVC Is an eye sore to you spend 3 dollars and paint it

~80000 rainbow trout á ~3kg each (totalling 240 tonnes escaped from marine fish farm ~40km from where I live this Monday... and ofc. I gotta work during the weekend. 3kg? Damn
>>
>>873898
You just need a basic bow (recurve or compound is fine but you'll spend time at first slowly adjusting for the refraction so compound is a little easier) and a basic bowfishing kit. The reel is a beefed up spin caster with 200 or 300lb braid and the arrows lack flectching except for a catch to stop the ring on the end of your line.

It's fun and I do it occasionally but it requires a good eye and a boat that can draft shallow. I didn't have time this year but I've changed my bowfishing setup to be a gator bow

Dumb question: I have only ever tried saltwater fishing (trout, cod, gar). So i wanna try something different, but the good fishing lakes around me require a lake specific permit, which Im not interested in paying for.
So my question is, could I go looking for small unstocked ponds that aren't ever fished and still expect to find fish there, or is the big proper lakes the only way to go?
