Found this light-up Livingston crank just laying on the shore today.

Battery's dead and it's missing hits hooks+split rings, but otherwise seems fine.

Recommend me the proper-sized trebles for it.
>>
>>1041783
are you sure it's dead?
>>
>>1041793
Yeah. I've gotten a couple like it out of MTB's, you're supposed to wet your fingers and touch the two hook eyelets to complete the circuit. It'll make a light clicking noise/feel if the battery's good.

I take it this one sat in a tackle box most of its life, because the body of it is pretty much pristine.

I went fishing earlier today for a couple hours and only caught this little guy on a rooster tail. Ever since my local lake had a algae bloom fishing really slowed down for me.
>>
>>1041797
>>1041798

I've had a few similar lures that would only actually light up when put underwater and moves around. I've never had a livingston crankbait though.

As for the hook size, I'd probably put a #4 silver treble on the belly, and a #4 treble on the tail painted red.
>>
>>1041802
Welp, I actually got it to work. Guess the battery isn't dead, although it's noticeably weaker than the new one.

Same method but the one I found but you also have to touch the eye in the bill. So 3 points of contact. Makes the same sound as the new one.

Will probably pick up a pack of #4 Gamakatsu's tomorrow, since my choices are Eagle Claw or Gama here locally.
>>
>>1041783
The smaller the trebles, the better. It probably came with 6s on it. Be sure to invest in split rings as well. Unscrewing eyelets to attach hooks is a BITCH.
>>
>>1041807
Yeah, these are molded in so it needs to be split rings.

I have those, and actual split ring pliers, already. Will probably use #4 or #5 rings.
>>
>>1041808
You can probably find it on bass pros website. They usually list the hook size.
>>
>>1041807
>>1041808
Oh, also, the ones that are on the newer Livingston are fuckhuge, albeit thankfully short-shank. Definitely *at least* #4's, possibly #2's. OEM for these are VMC according to Livingston's website.

I'll see what's available locally tomorrow and if need be order either VMC or Daiichi short-shanks off tackle warehouse or some shit.

fish frogs on the algae mats for bass
use heavy line though
>>1041770
thats pretty much what i do
did you fuck up the proportions?
bluegill dont care
crowd the hook eye?
cut the thread back, head cement it all down, bluegill wont care
90% of bluegill can be had redily on #10 or #12 (whichever you have too many hooks of) with an amorphous blob of foam and a bit of rubber legs from your scrap pile held on with any thread you regret wasting your $3 on
>>
>>1041813
I have never used frogs before what so i look for.
>>
>>1041813
My worst flies have been my best for bluegill. Without fail. I was trying to tie up a little white attractor today(or yesterday rather) with a more experienced tier. I fucked it up something awful(shit looks like a dude with downs and Parkinson's tied it) but I'm gonna throw it at my pond and see if I can't catch dinner this week.
>>
for lure survey guy:
>>1041814
>>
>>1041817
youll catch plenty. literally when i tie bluegill flies i tie a foam ant, with no hackle, or wings, just 2 rubber legs on the side. or recently ive started tying a hares ear nymph with no tail, ribbing made of the tag end of my black thread, no wing case, and some rubber legs just to that -something- on it moves at all. it takes next to no time to tie, is hard to ruin, and who cares if you lose it. ill tie one real quick to post a picture of it.
>>
>>1041821
I've been slowly teaching my girl about fly fishing. I think I'll probably take her for her first time fly fishing to one of the nearby bluegill ponds with a couple of 4wts and some of my trash flies. It'll be a good excuse to get out, we're guaranteed to catch something, she'll think they're cute, I'll get to touch her butt while others help her casts. It's a win all around.

here's the recipie
>3/0 thread, any dark colour is fine
>start your thread anywhere, it doesnt matter
>leave the tag
>no lead wire or bead head, they cost too much and take too much time
>hella dubbing noodle
>wrap 2/3-3/4 of the way up the shank
>break the dubbing noodle
>tie in legs
>push dubbing noodle up
>cover thread wraps so it doesn't look like total trash
>that step is for you, not the fish
>wind to just in front of the legs
>segment with the tag end of thread, tie down, snip out
>use the last bit of dubbing to build up the last of the fly
>dont bother building up a head, just whip finish
>hella head cement so fish dont tear it up and make you tie more than two of the bastard things
>tfw waiting for the head cement to dry takes longer than tying the fly
>fish it with ecactly 0 fucks to give about it because it takes 40 seconds to tie and costs fuck all too
>tfw you could probably crank out a dozen in 7 minutes with time for a smoke after and sell them a dollar each to whoever's next to you
>tfw that would buy you enough dubbing and thread to crank out hundreds of them plus a pack of hooks
>tfw selling a dozen more of them will buy you enough hooks to tie hundreds of them

Do most of the random lakes in the middle of nowhere in northern Ontario hold fish? I wanna take a camping trip to some crown land this summer and wanted to bring my kayak along to fish.

I've been out on some of these secluded lakes in the middle of the woods before in the UP that had absolutely nothing in them. Obviously they could have had fish, but I paddled around the lakes for hours trying to mark anything and didn't even get anything on my graph.

Wear fishing gloves, gaiters, and lighter long sleeves (like performance shirt pictured). Lip grippers are also your friend.

Try limiting your time on pure salt and move toward freshwater and brackish water more often as well. Hit salt flats or ocean once a month and hit the brackish and fresh the rest of the time.

Here's my streamer box, its mostly clousers
>>
>>1042002
Can't catch it on a clouser then there's no fish in the water lol

My streamer box is mostly clousers and decievers. I use the majority of it for salt anyway.
>>
>>1042007
>>1042007
if i could only have one pattern for the rest of my life, i would pick a wooly bugger, i have no doubt in my mind that tying a black or brown size 4 wooly bugger on a saltwater hook would catch a red fish, but my second pick would be the clouser minnow, because everything eats a minnow. my go-to carp fly is even a clouser minnow variant
>>
>>1041838
Probably.
When the heat really comes on the fish will retreat back into the deeper water, but for the most part they'll be up higher in the water column, and that's where you want your bait to be too.
When in doubt, it's better to have your bait above the fish. Most fish will rise to strike a bait above them. Few fish will strike at a bait below them, often they won't even see it.
>>
>>1041981
>Why the red on the tail?
Makes it look like there's blood trailing from the bait. Or at least that's what they say to fishermen in the tackle section with too much money in their pockets.

I have success with weightless worms, but only ever caught stuff on baby brush hogs and lizards if it's weighted either Texas or Carolina. Does the technique change for creatures if they're weightless?
>>
>>1041987
>Jitterbug
I'll take it. I love those things.
And they're awesome on summer evenings. When a bass explodes on one at sunset, it's about the most awesome feeling in the world.

>steel leader
Looks like somebody was fishing for Muskie. With the way the plating is all worn off it also looks like it's been underwater awhile.
I bet it still works good though.
>>
>>1042010
Yeah buggers, clousers, and decievers are my favorite flies all around. I've caught a few reds on black wooly buggers. Those three patterns are so easily variable and will catch damn near anything.
>>
>>1042027
i dont get why so many people obcess over complicated hyper realistic flies. 98% of the population isnt good enough for the fly to be the limiting factor. location, presentation, lure/fly, in that order. what you put in front of the fish is much less important than how you put it in front of a fish and weather or not its in front of a fish at all.
>>
Are Yo-Zuri and Lucky Craft lures memes?
>>
>>1042002
Nice
>>
>>1042030
It just fly fisherman autism especially those who really dedicated themselves to it
>>
>>1042023
The only thing I use weightless is flukes and senkos really.

I would rather use a 1/8 or 1/16oz with a worm (unless wacky rigged) or a creature and just give them big hops off the bottom until I find fish. I feel like I get 0 action otherwise.

But like the other anon said fish feed up, so if they don't see it fall they might not see it at all. On the flip side, bass are mostly going to be close to cover. So if you can find what they're hanging out around and cast to that they should see it. If they're cruising around out of cover they're usually feeding, so a moving bait would be a better option to use then imo.

The best advice I could give would to be go out and experiment with stuff until you find something you like.

>>1042020
Hmm. I would think you'd put it on the belly if you wanted it to look like the gills were bleeding, but I don't know if it really matters either way lol.

Idk about yo-zuri though. I heard they are pretty good but they keep raising their price and only add shiny coat of paints for their new lures and gimmick like 3d so that sound a bit meme-ish.

I tend to favor flies that kinda resemble just about everything. I love tying realistic flies but sadly they end up seeing less use.
>>1042106
My most productive fly has been my blue wing olives. Trout everywhere I've been take to it and the bluegill absolutely seem to love it.
>>
>>1042117
for dry flies it has to be an adams fly for me. if i could have 3 flies for the rest of history it would be an adams, a wooly bugger, and clouser minnows.

Don't know if this is the right place or not but Im interested is getting an inflatable boat to fish around in a bit. I wouldnt brave choppy or fast flowing water in it since I doubt it would handle that, but something I can kinda padle around and fish from. Can't get a kayak since I don't have anything I can take it places with so I thought something inflatable would be a good idea since it can pack up nicely. My question is, are inflatable boats a good idea or am I just gonna end up getting myself killed. Also, any suggestions you guys might have?

Whatever you're more comfortable with. As I suggest with all soft plastics go as light as you can with T-Rigs. Carolina rigs it doesn't matter.

>>1041987

Took my brother and 3 year old nephew fishing Sunday on a farm pond. My brother had just cast that same lure and let my nephew reel it in when a bass slammed it 5 feet from the shore. He freaked and ran with the rod, pulling the fish up on the bank in the process.

My nephew's first bass. 5 and a half pounds.
>>
>>1042303

>>
>>1042286
That's a funny ass law. I mean it discourages people from purposely snagging fish, but at the same time they want you to release fish that are basically dead?!

>>1042317
Pretty much. You can go heavier if you need to keep it down, but it kills the action.
>>
>>1042317
Or lighter.

I use a lot of 1/16oz Water Gremlin crimp-on bullet weights.

Basically go as light as you can without pulling it up out of the fishy zone. Since I fish a lot of shallow farm ponds and county parks (usually deepest spot is under 10') with relatively small, non-buoyant plastics I don't need much.

Yep. If I want to go a little slower and the water is calm I'll use 1/8oz. If I'm pitching to cover or the water is a little rough I move up to 1/4oz. I normally don't go above that unless the water/wind is moving the lure around too much.

That's pretty much what I do for all plastics except craw type lures. For some reason I generally like to use heavier weights with those.

>what's the catch?
They're heavy and awkward enough that getting them on and off a car requires 2 fairly strong, tall people.

They are pretty much trolling motor required, you can in theory paddle them but you'll be getting nowhere slowly.

They get blown around by gnat farts due to a high profile and nothing even remotely resembling a keel, again either trolling motor or anchor required.

While it has the weight capacity to hold 2 full-grown adults (assuming they aren't both hamplanets), it's short enough one or both of them won't be able to cast.

>some other upsides
It fits pretty much perfectly in a truck bed, even "compact" trucks like the Ranger/Colorado/Tacoma. Rides between the wheel well on full-sized trucks and over the wheel well but below the top of the bed on even the smallest compact trucks.

Pre-rigged (including battery lines) for either or both front and rear trolling motor.

Seats are comfy, and swivel, and can be adjusted front to back in a track.

Insanely stable, with 2 people in the boat one can stand on the gunwale and not tip the thing, or with 1 person in the boat a skinny person can stand on the gunwale and not tip the thing.

Hull is durable AF, will take a lifetime of being drug around gravel parking lots and across unimproved shores so you don't have to drop it off right at a boat ramp.

Can actually be fairly speedy with a 35-45lb thrust trolling motor

Excellent storage and organization for its size.

Yesterday evening, I was casting a baby torpedo into the shallowest part of a pond, and I caught four bass in about fifteen minutes. That was fuckin sick, but the problem is, a bass would miss it every three or four casts, so I really could've had like ten of them had they all hit it. How can I make it easier for bass to hit my topwater lures? I slowed down my twitch cadence a lot after the first few misses, but they still missed it even on pause.

Soft plastics. There's hardly a difference in size and if anything using a 1/0 should get more action since it takes up less of the lure.

The $180 kayak Dick's sells (Trailblazer 100) is a sit-in, even if the upper deck separates from the lower deck it won't take on water because the seam is well above the water line.

Also I've never seen one do that.
>>1042798
Highly advise looking at one of the sit-on's or at least the Future Beach Fusion 100 if you're looking at kayaks from Dick's and intend to fish out of it. The Trailblazer will hold up to modest recreational use but is so barren on features it would require extensive modification to be worth fishing out of. Also the backrest kinda sucks.

t. Dick's employee
>>
>>1042883
Higher hookup ratio as it will bit shorter striking fish, and will work "well enough" for everything from 4" stick baits to 18" snakes and eels so people can only worry about stocking 1 hook size across their whole range of plastics. Also keep in mind an EWG will lose shank length compared to a standard offset worm hook, so a 3/0 EWG will be about the same length as a 1/0 offset shank.

Then again I rarely miss fish with a nose-hooked worm fished Carolina or dropshotted, bass tend to inhale the whole thing.
>>
>>1042888
I almost exclusively use 4 inch senkos and finesse worms with an occasional 5 inch lizard, so I guess I'll give 1/0 EWGs a try. Like you said they inhale anyways.

I'd say anything bigger than 5/0 is unnecessary 95% of the time. Otherwise I use 4/0 a lot then go down if that won't fit/hurts the action.

>>1042955
That depends on the manufacturer. Some measure the gap and some measure length some do both.
>>
>>1042883
Because fish's mouths are only so big, and they tend to strike long baits like soft plastics short. A bigger hook means less lost fish to short strikes (and/or less waiting for the fish to keep eating the bait before you can set the hook), but also less action. A 3/0 provides a nice balance between action and length, especially for rigging standard 6" worms. But you can definitely use 1/0s for smaller things like 4" worms, and I have to great effect.

Power Pro for saltwater, deep water, and heavy cover bass/pike (or when I'm lazy or fishing a particularly expensive or rare lure).

Trilene XL for trout and panfish because it's cheap and works with ultralight spinning reels better than anything else I've tried.

Either Trilene XL or Rio mono tippet material for 99% of my flyfishing tippet, depending on how trusting the fish are and how lazy I am.

Highly recommend your first upgrade be the backrest. A cheap screw-on rod holder and a $5 DIY anchor trolley will get you fishing, the nice open tankwell will hold plenty, and the thing is over-all quite light.

How can I shorefish a small river in Michigan effectively? I have a compost pile full of crawlers I can use. How can I rig those?

>>
>>1043023

>>1043021
Okay, so...What do you want to catch?

In average current and generally shallow water you could simply soak the worms on a #6-#4 baitholder a couple feet under a bobber with a couple #BB sized split shot, and have a fair chance at bigger sunfish, stupid LMB/SMB/perch, channel cats, and bullheads. Pretty no-brainer setup, but not the most productive.

If you want specifically catfish, throw a 1/2-1oz egg sinker above a swivel, then 1-3 feet of line below the swivel to a #2/0-3/0 circle hook with the worm on it, and tight-line it on the bottom. That will do bullhead, channel cats, and the occasional blue or flathead.

I've never really felt like any lures I've lost I wouldn't have with fluoro or comparable strength braid (though going up a *lot* in braid strength has saved dozens of lures for me).

Mono has the advantages of being:
>cheap
>readily available literally anywhere
>handling like a dream compared to fluoro

Line stretch is a nonissue where I live since the absolute deepest I'll ever fish is around 15 feet, but I can see it being an issue elsewhere.

I actually have one coming in the mail, if it breaks I'll record myself pissing on the rod.
>>
>>1043064
Seaguar is what I use for flouro, but if you have a spinning reel you definitely have a use for braid.

>>1043076
Learn the FG knot if you want to use a leader, but braid straight the crank will work as long as you have a good cranking rod. Go a little looser on the drag too.

Honestly mono for cranks is perfectly fine. I like the way copolymer handles better though, so that might be worth a shot. I don't think you'll see a huge improvement in actually catching fish if your main use is for crankin. Braid and Flouro really shine where you need more sensitivity.

Just a note, if you're going to go with flouro I wouldn't suggest it on a spinning reel and don't go lower than 12# on a casting reel.
>>
>>1043112
I'm poor and only have one setup which is a Medium power with a baitcaster, so could I realistically use braid for everything assuming I'd just use a flouro leader for finesse applications like a weightless Senko?
>>
>>1043118
Absolutely. I did it for years with no issues.

Hell I've done finesse presentations with straight braid as well, still catch fish. Unless you're fishing EXTREMELY clear water or very heavily pressured fish a fluoro leader probably won't make a difference.
>>
>>1043118
I'd go with 20# braid. You can go lighter if you want, but there isn't really a reason to. Also, a leader isn't really necessary for anything if you're fishing for bass.

The only reason I use a leader on spinning reels is to save line from retying since the amount of line on your reel effects casting distance a whole lot more than it does casting reels.
>>
>>1043125
>>1043127
Alright I'll buy some Suffix 832 in 20lbs soon. I'm going to assume that my reel can fit all 150yds of it since it's so thin.
Only thing left to get an opinion on is should I put some backing on it or just tie directly to the reel?
>>
>>1043129
What reel do you have? If it's a fairly large one (2500-4500 size) you'll probably need backing to get it anywhere close to full.
>>
>>1043131
I have an Okuma Stratus V which advertises as holding 160yds of 10lbs mono, so 150yds of what is equivalent to 8lbs mono should all fit no problem, and even if it comes up short a little I find that I cast better when my reel is holding less than what's considered standard.
>>
Who here fishes with their bf?
>>
>>1043135
eyyy Stratus V. Those are great reels.

Yeah, just spool the line straight to the reel. They hold 140 yards of 30lb Power Pro at full capacity but no reason to fill a baitcaster to its max.

With a pitchfork.
Stick the pitchfork into the ground and wiggle the handle for a few minutes. You should see any worms within about 5 feet of the pitchfork rising to the surface to escape what they think are nearby moles looking to eat them.
It's the same concept behind worm grunting.

If they are bigger than 30 inches your chances of catching them from shore this time of year are slim to none. The big boys go out to big, deep water where they will stay until winter

Channel catfish, blues, and yellows don't. I think bullheads do.

Gafftops and hardheads definitely do and they hurt like a motherfucker.

Are Black Bullheads a good game? These are an invasive species here (I'm from Europe) and I am thinking in catch them and cook them as you americans do with catfishs. Do they taste good? The lack of info in YouTube makes think these catfish aren't good for eat and fish.

What kind of bait do you recommend me for catching them in a river full of eels, carps, mullets, barbels and largemouth bass?

Yes, technically all catfish have venomous spines.

However, some species are worse than others, and channel cats are fortunately pretty mild.
>>
>>1043498

>>
>>1043557
thats another problem i have... driving can be dangerous for me in the summer

luckily i have extreme anxiety so i never embarrass myself by talking to them
>>
>>1043553

They taste fine. They don't get very large (2-3 lbs is considered big) and as a result don't put up as much of a fight as other catfish and aren't generally considered gamefish in the US. They're commonly farmed for their meat though.
>>
>>1043553
Yeah. They fight okay for their size (which isn't huge, especially compared to other catfish) and they taste like other catfish--IE, mild.

Bullhead in the US are considered a "kid's fish" and are commonly stocked in county parks and youth ponds because they're easy to catch on light tackle with simple rigs.

You would do well with a worm/cricket/(live) grub or other small live bait soaking under a bobber on like a #1 circle hook, or if you have more than token current due to being a river a standard catfish slip sinker rig would work.

It's strange, like I said in all my bitching and blogposts that she is super fucking picky and looking for these certain things but the longer we hang out, some shit keeps bringing us back together even tho we were both looking for reasons to break it off.

What do you guys think of this rig I made? I poke a hole in the head of the tube bait and stick a piece of line through it, then slide a 1/4oz slip weight on, and tie the end to a 4/0 treble hook. Then I just push it it forward inside the tube and the hook shoves the weight up inside the body.

>>
>>1043760
The number 1 rule to success is to seek out and ask the regulars who frequent the area what they use and what works best for them. Thanks to asking a tackle shop clerk what to use, I caught a 5 pound bass today with the lure he recommended.
>>
>>1043318
How about you stop being a faggot. I have a car with no roof rack or trailer hitch or anchor points to do the pool noodle tying thing, got no way to carry a yak safely.

>>1042186
Sadly I don't have any way to even tie one up on my car, no roof rack or trailer hitch. I have a small econocar with a smooth curved roof. Roof racks for my car cost more than a yak lol.
>>
>>1043798
If you have a 4-door you can literally run ratchet straps through the door frames to hold a yak (on pool noodles ofc) to the roof.

If you have a 2-door econobox, wtf were you thinking when you bought the damn thing?
