does the KLR really deserve the reputation it gets as a cheap reliable do everything bike?

Seems a little too good to be true for such a dirt cheap vehicle. I see them everywhere on craigslist though and I need to hear some real reasons why I shouldn't buy one. I hear people say "DR650 is better in every way" but you look at the used market and you can get a klr with the same year and miles as a dr650 for like $2000 cheaper. Any klr owners in this thread?
>>
>>17825459
I'm not in new jersey but I passed the MA test the first try and only got 1 answer wrong. I didn't look at the book once. All I did was take all the practice tests I could find on google. I probably took variations of my state's test like 25 times before I pretty much knew all the answers.
>>
>>17825763
The Dr and xr are both better bikes in every regard besides wind protection and stock tank, which can be fixed for under $600 for both issues
>>
>>17825804
In what ways are they marginally better? Is it really worth it when you factor in price and availability? XR and DR are both more dirt oriented from what I've seen, and they're both harder to find and generally much more expensive than the handful of used KLR's out there.
>>
>>17825819
They are like 70 lbs lighter and much easier to maneuver, and they make more power.
>>
>>17825841
That's what I figured, my budget is like 2300 so I'll probably end up getting a klr. Cheapest DR I could find is a 2005 for $3k. A little much for me but the seller claims only 1082 miles.

The weight of the KLR seems a little much to deal with but I won't be loading it up with much so it should be managable. Looking at a 2001 with 6k miles on it right now for $ 2200
>>
>>17825864
I just sold a '99 DR650 with 21k miles for $2k flat. You aren't looking hard enough
>>
why two /dbt/'s?
>>
>>17825877

Well I am really looking only in my own state. If I wanted to cross border there is a '99 DR650 for $2225 with 17500. I'm looking for something with low miles in really good condition though. The KLR I'm looking at seems like it barely saw any offroad use at all. All original with almost no wear at all.

That's the difference in price I mean though.
A near mint KLR with 6k vs a DR with 17k thats seen some shit and had a ton of offroad use. I don't see the value with the DR

Hi. I'm completely clueless when it comes to bikes. I don't know anything besides a few names like Harley and Davidson. But I'm interested. So I have two questions.
1- Is maintaining a motorcycle easier and less time demanding than owning a car? Y/N? And if yes, how much less time would you spend maintaining a bike as a fraction of what you would spend on a car?
2- Call you give me an example of a motorcycle that is necessarily Japanese and the most comfortable money can possibly buy? A bike with a full seat, back support, that is easy and comfortable to take on a ~100km trip or just to the other corner of the city, regardless of price but necessarily JDM.
I promise to not post again here, I'm sorry if these questions are retarded and thank you for the attention.
>>
>>17827831

Kinda yes, kinda no. Motorcycles are easier to work on IMO, but they require more periodic maintenance. Oil should probably be changed a little more frequently than in a car, chain has to be cleaned/lubed, valves checked, etc. Cars are a lot simpler since you just gotta keep up on oil changes and you're solid for a hundred thousand miles.

I dunno anything about that shit because it sounds like you want a cruiser and I know nothing about cruisers.
>>
>>17824520
i figured this might be the place to ask this

i want to build a custom motorcycle one of these days, but im contemplating transmissions, so I want some input:

>what brand/model/type of transmission do you prefer? why?
>which do you think is the most easily available motorcycle transmission out there?
>cheapest?
>which is the easiest to maintain/repair?

Motorcycles have the gearbox on a bike is built into the engine, they do not work like car transmission at all.
It's a dog selection box which is why they can do the clutchless shifts without doing damage.
>>
>>17827937
am i crazy for wanting to try and cut and weld things to work?

the engine i had in mind won't be from a motorcycle, so there would be work to be done to get things together

Yes thats retarded. they are so god damned complicated that i managed to get my gearbox to always be in 2nd gear while also selecting another gear by having 2 washers in the wrong spot, one was about half a millimeter wider than the other washer and they needed to swap places, that was it.

How do you guys feel about coverage for roadside assistance, theft, or vandalism? I once crashed on mountain twisties where there was no reception. Ask if want story. I also live in NYC where theft is a real threat. A friend of mine had two bikes stolen this year, one in New Jersey the other in Pennsylvania. Doubt vandalism is worth it, dont know what itd cover and deductible issues.

I have a garage and live in a white suburb but I'm always out and about. I also have a crappy motion sensitive barn lock. Have cover but usually only use for weather not as a deterrent.

99% of people can totally tear it up with a KLR650 on 50/50 tires, but they won't be keeping up with anyone on a plated MX bike running purely offroad tires, especially on technical, muddy, hilly single track shit.

A car did this to me except he was heading towards me and skipping a 3 block traffic jam to the highway by jumping a double yellow into oncoming traffic. If I had a helmet cam I sure as fuck would've taken the video to the precinct.

In the moment I only swerved out of the way and got on the horn and gave him the finger but the edgy in me wishes I had blocked him with my bike, gotten off, dragged him out of his car, and killed him with my steel toes.

>>17827831
1. It's cheaper if you do it yourself. There's less to do in this order:
Kawasaki>Post warranty Yamaha>Suzuki>in warranty Yamaha>Any Honda, with the arguable exclusion of a carbureted V4

- "Most comfortable" depends on three factors. Height, muscular endurance, and windshield preference.
I'm a 2nd generation Honda fan, so from their lineup I'd recommend a Valkyrie, CTX, or Rebel if you're cruiser inclined, or don't like a windshield. Africa Twin or CB500X if you want a bubble to sit in.
CB1100 or NM4 if you're nasty.
Used, buy any CB that hasn't been vandalized. All the way down to the CB250 and CB600 nighthawks, you'll open a whole world of junkyard farkles that people don't know the value of. (Google windjammer, to start)
Just like the previous, each category descends. This time by weight. A light bike is easy to maneuver, in small spaces. Heavier ones require less core endurance to compensate for vibration at long distances or high speed.

Come back and post anytime. Getting a new community is a part of motorcycling, and anonymous posting is a great place for dumb questions.

Most bike transmissions are integral to the engine, with the exception of Harleys afaik. Looks like you can get a used one of those for around $400. If you went that route, it'd probably be easier to copy them from the transmission to the rear wheel. Then you've got a clutch to worry about. Honestly it'd be easier and cheaper to find an existing bike engine/transmission that ticks all the boxes for what you want, and just use it.

You might as well generalize about test in general though at that point. For me I found it fun and fed my interest of learning about riding myself. Total Control and Proficient Motorcycling are my favorite books. I've also read some library books about drag bikes, bike repair and modding, and the so-called biker lifestyle and community.

If you want to get fucked and fuck yourself at the end of the day nobody can stop you. But I do agree American license standards are disgustingly low. The MSF let loose niggers who couldnt even keep the bike upright with with clutchwork much less grasp countersteering. A 300lb niggress and 4"2 manlet nigger actually failed the road test part. And the manlet nigger had been riding dirty for a few months. A guy highsided his cb200x at 10mph somehow as well. Good times.

>>
>>17830009
>ended up ripping out his jaw instead
>>
>>17830024
It's called a lowside? Loss of traction. Happens when you rear brake in a turn but roundabouts are infamous for that due to slick roads, low speed, and being too curved for the guys who cant lean. Looks like he wasnt looking far enough ahead in the turn and probably his body position had bad form.
>>
>>17830024
>>17830034
Also giving it too much throttle and possibly his downshifting may have had to do with it. I lowsided once from excessive throttle and when I brought it up two other guys here said they had as well.
>>
If he was going faster and the rear slid out he wouldve entered a highside from the tires snapping back into alignment, which is what a highside is. He was going slow enough and with low throttle that he just slid out and gravity took over and completed his lean for him.

Though you can drift like that if you know how.

>>17830057
Don't do the second one without throttle and clutch slip or you'll stall with the bike mid turn, which is a fun way to drop it, probably right on top of the foot you instinctively begin to put down

Twisted an ankle that way when I was learning to ride on a >500lb suzuki bandit.
>>
>>17830070
I except people to have a proper training before riding a bike. Which includes how to do low speed manoeuvrers.

>>17830070
>Don't do the second one without throttle and clutch slip or you'll stall with the bike mid turn, which is a fun way to drop it, probably right on top of the foot you instinctively begin to put down

I was taught to use the rear brake for U turns and figure of eights. Without clutchslip .Teeny bit of throttle to keep the bike pulling.

Anyway, I use the rear brake very gently to do some minor corrections mid turn before hitting the apex. Upright the bike a little. Not at high speed. Don't know if it's a wrong habit or not.
>>
>>17830016
I use the rear brake when I don't have to decelerate hard, mainly because the rear rotor and pads are way cheaper than the front (^:
And in combination with clutching for low speed stability
>>

A lot of young sportbikers do so because they spent all their money on a used supersport and the assosciated premiums for insurance and maintenance and can't afford gear. The ones that do wear all the gear look goofy as hell because they couldn't get the more expensive cool looking stuff and didn't settle for the less expensive, but less safe cool looking stuff.

And, so it's the same thing for harley riders. Their bikes are expensive and break all the time so they barely wear anything. Most around here just have a helmet.
>>
>>17830224
the rumored ZXR-25 only revs to 12k and probably won't be released outside of japan. it'll also definitely be too expensive for the SEA market.

Hold me guyz. Im leaving this job for a better one in a month, only thing im sad about, there is this cute grill i sometimes have launch together with. I would ask her out, but she has a boyfriend. That wouldnt have mattered few years ago when i was more of a douchebag, i was together with a girl for 5 years who also had a boyfriend when i met her. But now i guess im a grown up and will just move on. Still kinda sux tho. Also ktm is the best dirtbike.

Why is that bad? Because it'll run too rich and wash off the oil from the cylinder wall or what?

It puts more load on the engine than should be handling. It's kind of the same thing as stalling your engine for every rev. Because the engine is under so much load despite not producing enough power to cope, the timing could be off a little bit and cause some nasty unintended explosions. You're more or less hammering the engine and putting extra wear on every single part of it while risking a piston moving at just the wrong speed due to the excessive load and an explosion happening at the wrong time during its travel, blowing shit up if the engine happens to try and compress the explosion.

This is what motorbikes are about.

Motorcycling is about maximum smiles per gallon. Chasing outright speed or comfort is a fools errand, benchracing at best and a fatal personality flaw at worst. I have ridden all the bikes, anything from scooters up to the latest supersports, touring bikes, cruisers, adventure bikes, maybe not all, but I think I have gleaned a reasonably broad idea of what motorcycles have to offer. I have learned that people bring a lot of different attitudes and ideas to motorcycling, but the most important thing is that you always keep an open mind, strive to improve, and get out and RIDE. Why am I posting up a cheap, midweight ujm? Coz that's what actually gets ridden. The guys with really nice bikes keep them sheltered at home on trickle charge and tyre warmers. The classic bikes and projects are the same but the engine is also in pieces. Cruiser riders invariably carry terrible attitudes and habits towards riding and are frankly more interested in chrome and leather chaps than motorcycling. The touring guys can be alright but lots of them get lost in the doodads and end up with two wheeled cars. That's the magic of these suzukis. They will actually start when you put the key in them. Their flexible nature doesn't pigeonhole your riding into one purpose or single use. They don't demand extreme maintenance, constant remapping, or recalls. You can throw any rider on them and they will have a good time without the bike cramping their riding style. Even if it gets dropped, or ridden through the winter, nobody will cry about it too hard, and it can probably be repaired easily enough. Motorcycling started with attainable naked bikes for the layman and that is where it needs to return to. I can honestly say that my next bike will be a newish one of these so I can just get out and RIDE everyday instead of forever frilling around on the edges, getting bogged down in distractions and repairs, special tools, and weird communities. Aight peace.

Took a rip on my fucking Harley today
True American iron #freedommachine
Layed my big balls into a corner at three times the posted limit and had an epiphany. A vision. I saw Abraham Lincoln as a child when he first saw Harley's ripping past his log cabin. And how it molded him. I snapped back into reality and realized that the thunder between my legs is the true essence of freedom and the American way.

It's actually the opposite, the greatest loads a motor will see is at high RPM. A power pulse from the combustion has the same force on the piston regardless of RPM, The piston changing directions is where the real issues arise. At high RPM the piston is really going fast and has a lot of stored energy, the faster the piston moves, the more energy it has. The rod bearings/crank/piston really take a beating when you rev the shit out of it.

You can look this up, there are some nice articles done by F1 engineers about it on the web.

I never was in that phase, my bike isn't "fast" as it tops out at 244kph, which is slower than most cars I've driven. It's fast enough for the city and country roads when I punch it over 10krpm - well manageable power.

>>17830718
Probably the way to go, I see my neighbor squidding around on his 48hp ktm rc all the time. Would like to wheelie but I can't even do it on a pushbike properly - and I'm sure I'll wreck it.
I experienced my first tire-slip while accelerating out of a intersection-corner, that was fun but I guess it's risky.

the fix is don't fill it up to the point that you are spilling a litre per fill up out of the over flow hose.

Its almost easier on a street bike, not really much balance required if you're at speed, just throttle control.

Just find an empty road and try, the hardest part is the mental block for the first couple times.

HD has resisted innovation for 30+ years, so you were buying a new-made 70's or 80's bike. Which is bretty cool if that's what you want. 80's bikes made in the 60's are now old and most have been fucked with over the years.

Starting this year, HD is just now trying to leapfrog those lost years and get with the times. So they are offering some 4-valve heads, water cooled heads, and some updated mid-size cruisers. This is overall a good thing, but I expect it to take a year or three to shake the bugs out. If that's ok with you, great. Just be aware.
>>
>>17831017
What are some comparable companies with better quality?
How does Triumph and Victory as examples compare?
>>
>>17831007
Nothing really innovating anything for a long time. Only now are they attempting to push forward because Indian has been buttfucking them.

All they have going for them is "murican heritage" which is bs because very little of a Harley is made in the actual u.s.
But off course the biggest problem, to me anyway, is the typical "Harley guy" who thinks anything different from his bike choice is wrong.
>>
>>17831024
victory has been shut down so Polaris can focus more on cutie Indian projects.
More performance oriented engines and things outside of cruisers.

>But off course the biggest problem, to me anyway, is the typical "Harley guy" who thinks anything different from his bike choice is wrong.

There's fan boys lime that for every brand obviously.
It's just more prevalent here in murica since until recently hatkey alone was over 50% of domestic sales.
>>
>>17831024
Both are as modern as you could want. Victory's parent company has killed in favor of their other brand, Indian. There's one or more indianfags here, and the Indian owners I know in real life all love love love the bikes. Quality and reliability seem top notch.

where I like is thick with Triumph owners, they also seem pretty satisfied. However, I've only seen the Triumph standards, I've never seen one of their big cruisers IRL.

If a big American cruiser is what you're interested in, and you want to buy new, I think you should take a good look at Indian.
