Bikes
>>

This.

I have a Harley custom build, 127ci stroker, lots of torque and HP, feels great. It's not a crotch rocket, and I'm not going to be trying a "go fast" race against the crotch rockets even though it would probably perform respectably off the line for a while. That's not what my bike is, or what it's built for, and I have no urge to throttle it up to impress some dickhead at a stop light.

Still, you'd be amazed how many times someone on a crotch rocket pulls up beside me, revving like a banshee, then takes off the line screaming through gears. I think it gives them odd satisfaction that they "beat" another bike, particularly a Harley, even when they're the only retard in the "race". The only thing more idiotic is playing along. Douchebags that act like children on the street. I'm waiting for the day when one of them takes it off the line the second the light turns green, only to run smack into the log truck that tried to squeeze the last second out of a yellow light.

As a biker, the vast majority of other vehicles on the road are capable of killing you at relatively minimal impact speeds with zero damage to their occupants. Many of them don't see you and you've got to ride like everyone wants you dead. I get opening it up a bit on the open highway when no one else is around, enjoying a little performance that a car can't deliver. But why the fuck you'd want to do stupid shit that just increases your odds of sudden death in an activity that you can otherwise make relatively safe and still enjoy a lot, is beyond me. Just hop off the bike and go play frogger on the freeway instead of ruining a decent bike.

It's about attitude. Nothing wrong with having a nice bike (or car) you're proud of and showing it off, but performance tricks on the highway are just fucking stupid; hopefully it's only yourself that you end up killing. And if it isn't fatally stupid (revving for no reason comes to mind,) it's still fucking obnoxious.
>>
>>17801293
>Gyroscopic effect of the wheels
It's a common delusion.
>>
Well shit, got a hole in the downpipe. I know the ECU cam compensate for changes in backpresure from removing/replacing the baffle (or the entire muffler), but is running with just one cylinder farting out into the air and the other three going through the exhaust system going to cause and problems beyond being obnoxiously loud?
>>
>>17801363

Ugly as sin, even a stock one manages to look a ton better.

get a real paint job and smooth the tank/gauge holder lines while your at it, so that that it looks like one piece instead of a tacky addon.

Points taken, it's actually getting a professional paint job now and far from complete. It's hard as I'm pretty new to this stuff. The tank gauge is changing along with the lights as well. Putting a tribar harley light on.

All naked busas are ugly.

Something like this is not awful though, nothing too ricey. Thry look a lot nicer with a belly pan.

That gauge holder has to go.

Balancing motorcycles is a perpetual teeter totter. Riders tilt from left to right thousands of times a second so you can't see it. They're known as micro teeters. To turn, counter steering is required. This special tilting motion is made up of nano totters. Counter steering is a sixth sense that can only be learned at a young age. That's why adults learning to ride for the first time can't understand it.

How do you lads deal with the fact that we have like 1 month of good riding followed by 1 month of cold riding left tops

Well, I'm going to get a $6000 loan to get a new bike. 6.5% interest, so the total cost will be ~$6600 over 3 years. No extra fees for paying it out too, so if I come into some money I can just fuck it off.
I just can't wait any longer, I need a road bike.

is a 2012 rmx 450z, they are worth around 5k without rego and that one is registered for the next 12 months.

Plus now i have a decent practice bike for enduro training, the idea is use the RMX as my practice bike and the 300 exc as my competition bike considering it already has a fully custom engine and a $2500 suspension tune.
>>
>>17804178
Wouldn't it be better to practice on the 300 since those two bikes probably feel nothing alike within the scope of dirt bikes?

can ride both and honestly they feel quite similar to ride until you get into real technical shit like hills with gap jumps or on the other end on really fast trails the RMX suspension gives out, if you hit two really large holes in a row the rebound is not fast enough and the suspension is still compressed from the previous bump and it will try to send you over the handle bars

but honestly, im a bad person to go off, im currently training for Romaniacs bronze class next year so my opinions probably don't even make sense in other peoples minds.

I look at it as i already know how to ride my 300 to its fullest, the 450 just offers more opportunity to learn new things and then apply them to riding the 300, don't get me wrong in practice i will be riding both but it is just nice to have a spare bike around for reference points.

For a suFour? Ask if he has maintenance records.

Also, if there are electrical add ons have him show you the connections, fuse panel, and ask if the rectifier has been replaced.
Honda makes the toughest bikes in existence, but electrics have never been their forte. If it's been replaced with Yamaha parts, that's actually a good thing.

Check that it was serviced at least every 5000-8000km and what oil was used, if they went el cheapo on oil that is no good it will be due for a timing chain and valve adjustment by 40,000km other than that just the general stuff.
generally worth around 6k for a 2012+ one with less than 25,000km on the clock.
can get an nc39 with around the same kilometers for 4k though.

You could legitimately become a competitive racer (at the local level, maybe make it to moto3) despite starting in your early 20s.

Some people have a talent for this shit and everything that holds them back is nerves and waiting for that moment where it clicks.

Some people are doomed to be shit riders and starting on minibikes as toddlers wouldn't help them.
>>
>>17804920

Balancing, ofc. How would you know you need jetting, and which way to go, if they re not even working together???
>>
>>17804934
>>17804943

i know the ballpark (fairly specific for altitude really) jet sizes needed for this particular exhaust system. i dunno if balancing first will be a waste of time or putting in the tried and tested jets first (a few weeks before exhaust is ready) then balancing would be better.

im not going to be experimenting with the carbs on the dyno if that's what you're thinking

basically, do you guys think changing the jets and some other things will throw off properly balanced carbs
i kind of think setting all the carbs to the suggested settings then balancing them would be a more consistent approach...
>>
>>17804954
Did you do the intake too?

I wouldn't jet for new pipes without opening the other end.
>>
>>17804954

>>
>>17804165

>>
>>17804977
the new pipes flow far better than the stock system.
the stock intake is actually very good for flow rate with light oiling. re jetting is strongly suggested and the guy im buying it from had his dyno tuned with the stock intake so I'm using his settings (it's the same as other stuff online I have found)

I just think the carbs need balancing because of a fairly rough idle and some vibration when opening throttle. I have checked and adjusted the valve shims. Haven't checked the valve seating clearances though. It was a bit rough before I changed the shims too, by the way.

I drive 80 miles a day round trip to work at a warehouse where I make above tree fiddy a week after tax, before overtime. I borrow a car from a family member. Would financing a new or buying a used dual sport bike be beneficial? The main reason I'm thinking about this is because of attendance issues stemming from the fact that once my family member is late, I'm late. I'm in Texas, so it could be a year round solution. I need versatility and reliability with low cost to own. Pic related looks nice, but the XR650L looks more affordable.
>>
>>17805266
I was thinking about it but I'm doing a national service program so it'd sit in a car park for half a year. Shipping would cost a bit (unless I ride 3k miles across the US on a shitbike with a huge duffel) and arrive on a specified day.
To top it off, my inspection (MA) would expire while I'm there and I'd have to comply to CA inspections for a new sticker.
>>
>>17805321
>Dual sport

haha no. memes aside, these need more upkeep than all other bikes especially if you put them on the highway and rev the piss out of them for an hour straight. they burn oil, wear their piston rings, and bash up their valves with glee. on top of all that they're uncomfortable as all fuck, have short tank ranges, and knobby tires do not enjoy long trips on pavement. also, when people say they're good for offroading, they're thinking of more technical, extreme offroading with mud pits, wet grass, and logs to jump. absolutely no path you take to work is going to demand one of those unless you work at an illegal crack shack.

Buy a used sports tourer. They're very easy to handle even for beginners, long lasting, pleasant to ride, can be practical, and universally bretty comfy. IE: VFR800, FZ6/FZ1, Aprilia futura, suzuki bandit.

>>17805526
The conditions always call for it. if your argument for it is "it reduces congestion, we all win", you have to do it as often as possible.
Without breaking the speed limit:
Filter once = cutting in line, holding up the queue just further down the road
Filter twice = if you make enough lights, you're just at the back/at the middle of a different line now.
Filter at every light, at every opportunity = not participating in line. Number of people holding up traffic successfully reduced.

Can you even ride a bicycle? Then you already know countersteering.
You can't? Don't try countersteering, you ll faceplant because you will be over-acting.
>>
>>17805597
The only thing that's different on motorcycles is how far you have to/can lean and having to stay on the gas through turns and run the engine a little higher than you think you have to. Takes some getting used to but you get to the edge of your tire with balls, not skills. Everyone should practice it in a parking lot.

You judge whether or not you can do it for a given radius turn on a limited strip of pavement with skills.

>again
Can someone fucking petition MSF to have this shit removed from the course and have all traces of it wiped from the internet? Counter steering is not something you need to learn, it just happens when you turn and lean anything with two wheels, don't think about it, don't talk about it, just forget you ever heard of it.
>>
>>17805658
As apposed to just leaning to turn/swerve or whatever, you can countersteer to initiate it quickly because it will cause the bike to lean quickly. Have you ever ridden a motorcycle?
>>
>>17805677
You're missing the point, you cannot lean a bike without counter steering, talking about it makes people think about it and when newer riders think about it they fuck it up, I rode for 10 years before I took the MSF course and learned about counter steering and guess what? Nothing changed, I'd been doing it since I was a kid because it's a natural part of riding a bike. If you can ride a bicycle you can counter steer, and no one teaches it to little kids.
>>
>>17805698
Not him and I agree with you. But consciously countersteering (literally thinking: push this bar away from you to lean moar) did help me push harder. I do agree that most people use the term the wrong way.

I agree it's a good thing to learn, later, when you're comfortable on the bike and want to learn to corner better, but when you throw it out in the first 2 hours of the MSF course, to people who've never been on a bike before they think of pic related, not what you're actually supposed to be doing.

No test, they don't even look at the equipment. They are looking for the federal emissions sticker. As long as it says road legal for 49 states ( minimum ) and has over 7500 miles on it it's good to go. You can still get it regged without the federal sticker and 7500 miles but you will have to DMV shop a bit to find a drone that actually knows the law properly and how to check box #6 on the form in front of them ( box 6 says EXEMPTION bike does not have fed emission sticker, more than 7500 miles and plated from another state)

Some of you might remember my post from Monday, I said I slipped on wet tram tracks and crashed.
Today I got my bike from repair shop with new dashboard and blinkers.
And you know what?
Some faggot switched lanes right into me. Dashboard is once again broken.
Luckily cops have determined his fault right away and the insurance will pay for the damage. The payment process might take a while, and this can very much be the end of my season due to weather.

I'm ok, a couple of bruises.
Do I subcontiously want to die?

>>
>>17806971
Pay more attention homie you need to keep your head on a swivel

I know it doesn't seem like it but most of these situations are avoidable in one or another way
Glad you're not hurt, stay safe. Take the downtime to read some books on street riding strategies and learn from people who have survived doing it for 40+ years.
>>
>>17806971
Would ABS have saved you?
>>
>>17806982
Yeah, I would avoid that if I figured that the car driver won't see me in my maneuver. From his perspective I was behind him and then suddenly I'm to his right in the blind zone. Does not excuse him for not turning the blinkers on.
>>17806984
No. He was to my left and switched lanes to the right, so the hit was from the left and he switched so fast that at first I thought he did this on purpose. I did not have a single chance to react
>>
>>17807010
Get Proficient Motorcycling. It is good shit. Also, when riding nearish to people try and make a habit of looking at them periodically through their side mirrors or through their windows. You can get a sense of their intentions by where their head and eyes are going. Obviously don't fixate on them but keep it on your crosscheck.

Hope the bike gets sorted soon, m8.

Yeah, I do that when I can.
Just a hour before the crash some other car almost did the same, and when I catched up with it on a red light, I saw two chicks singing and dancing to the radio inside. I got as far away from them as I could when the light turned green.

Thanks m8
>>
>>17806971
You need to put yourself in positions where shit like that can't happen as much as possible. There are going to be small gaps of time where you have no choice but a majority of your time on a bike can be done where shitty drivers can't hit you minus some final destination freak accidents.
>>
>>17807010
>Does not excuse him for not turning the blinkers on.

Are you counting on drivers doing the right thing, you shouldn't, you should ride like every motherfucker out there is trying to kill you.
>>
>>17807095
Yeah, I know that. What I meant was that if we exclude the formal traffic regulations (by which the accident totally his fault), I did the wrong thing to make a dare maneuver in his blind zone, and he did the wrong thing not turning the blinkers.
>>
>>17806144
>>17806153
Because I live in Texas and due to all the idiots buying extra gas I only had one bar left and wouldn't have gotten very far running.
>>
Might be a retarded question but why dont you see superchargers on 2 strokes to help the peaky powerband?
>>
>>17807166
the expansion chamber is a type of supercharger
>>
>>17807174
also 2 strokes don't have to be peaky, MX based ones that go for maximum power will be, enduro 2 strokes, road going 2 strokes, or even, indeed 500cc racing 2 strokes by the end of their time were NOT peaky.
>>
2 strokes can't deal well with forced induction because there are no valves. The expansion chamber loses its effectiveness of the induction pressure is higher than atmospheric pressure.
