Alright /dbt/ I'm confused.
I bought an 1987 CG 125 in worse shape but similar to the picture from a mate's dad for £100 and it has been sitting for about 10 years but can run. The oil's been changed, the carb has been cleaned, spark plug has been replaced, various things on it have been adjusted right and it should be running normally but it's not.

It'll run eventually after a few kick-starts but the revs won't be smooth and will sometimes stick high or just at a random point until you wiggle the throttle and it might go down.
After a few minutes it'll cut out and won't start again.

Why is it doing this can anyone shine some light on the subject?

Do I just need to keep running it then eventually it'll run normal?

Am I a 125 fag yet or still a no bike faggot?

Pls help
>>
>>17790923
It can be a pain when you first do it because you don't know where everything goes or how it fits together, but once you do it's pretty easy, like 5 bolts and some clips per side. And they're not really that fragile, I've never broken one, the hard part is finding somewhere to set it down once it's off, they're big and scratch easily.
>>
>>17790945
The bottom end bearings/top end of the engine are likely full of rust which is being circulated around the engine.
run it much more and the engine will likely explode with the con rod coming out the crank case.
thats a full engine rebuild you have there.

im currently riding a nekid 600cc bike but i wanna upgrade to something like 1000cc gixxer or 1100 blackbird, just little worried bout the effort of fairings

any 125 at price or less will have a problem.

I sold my YBR 125 for £450 only because it had a fuel injection problem and would randomly stall when idling. Otherwise everything else worked alright.

It was pretty badly rusted but that's made-in-china for you.

Hey ho bros, I'm helpin my bro work on his 81 XS850 that's going under a wiring harness transplant, and nearby in the apartment complex is a stripped bike that's been sitting at least a year and a half, surprisingly little rust considering we live by the ocean. It's a mid 80' suzuki GS1100, I'm thinking I try an pick it up for 100-150?

What do you bros think

After resurrecting a bike that sat for 15 years, I've found that if the carb's clean, replacing the ignition points and condensers does wonders for rough idle and just running in general. With sticking, lube your throttle cable and maybe choke if it needs it, and make sure your carb cap isn't overtightened, I've had that cause the throttle slide to twist and get stuck.
>>
>>17791280

>>
>>17791344
I've got a disc lock and I use the steering head lock, but neither is really going to stop someone determined. The best defense is either a locked garage or not owning a modern sport bike or Harley, because no one steals anything else.
>>
>>17791344
Chained to brick house, steering lock and chip in key. If abroad I replace the chain lock with a disc lock. Its best protection is its low value and appalling state.

dude, if you wanna call 100hp+ breaking loose at the rear around 8000RPM "a bit" then there is no helping you. There is no greater thrill than fast acceleration out of a corner, thats where motorcycle riding begins.

very few people do you mean.

A v-twin still makes overall less power than an I4 with similar displacement. You build a performance oriented 1300CC I4 and it will have similar torque levels to the Panigale but way more power, you want to give it comparable low-end torque with a tradeoff you make it a crossplane and give it a big-bang firing order.

I4s are the superior engine configuration either way.

Have one, same color, same year. Wasn't technically a first bike, I rode a 50cc 2t for 2 years prior.

The problem with SV as a first bike is that it's VERY jerky and torquey (is that a word?) at low RPM, especially at maneuvering speeds. You will be able to handle it, but you'll need to learn how to be smooth with the throttle, especially in the rain. It's easy to bump on a pothole, jerk the throttle, and lose the rear in wet as an effect.

The bike you posted seems perfect, go for it.

Grip locks that bind the front brake and throttle together have the added benefit of putting a lot of pressure on the lines for a long period of time (like overnight), pushing air bubbles to the reservoir. Every time I take a grip lock off, the brakes are tight as fuck. It's a reusable version of the ziptie trick.

This is dumb. Most people drive over the speed limit on highways, speed limit is slow. Accelerating quickly is important after hard braking. If you're ever in a situation when you have to slam the brakes, there's a good chance you're gonna want to get moving again so the big rig behind you doesn't turn you into paste.

I had a hard braking scenario on the highway fairly recently, and while that bike tops out near highway speeds (thinking hurr durr good enough), I damn near got rear-ended while I was trying to get moving again. People don't anticipate a bike to be accelerating slowly, it's dangerous. I had to build up speed on a debris filled shoulder before being able to safely merge.

>>
>>17792457

>>
>>17792543

120kph is roughly 74mph. Just about any highway in the US has people regularly going 80mph or more despite speed limits of 50-60. I cruise at 90mph or so on my big bike and slowly inch past people.

I was taking my little bike to a friend's house to bleed the brakes, they got a little air in them when I removed the handlebars and flipped them upside down for a suspension mod. Screaming along at 75mph or so in the slow lane, people passing quickly on my left, a car in front of me with quite a bit of following distance between us. Someone was coming from an onramp to merge, I was gonna let him in due to all the space when the car ahead slams his brakes to allow the merging car in front of him (no fucking idea who the does that kind of shit). I braked down to 40mph or so and they accelerated ahead like normal. I got on the gas as hard as I could, a few seconds later I hear squealing tires and look in my mirror to see a guy barely managing to not shoot up my ass. I swerved over to the shoulder, he shot by, and there I was stuck trying to crawl back up to 75mph again. That's still slightly too slow to merge safely here, so it was a pretty stressful situation.
>>
>>17792551

It isn't the same. Cars are large and people are looking for them. People are not looking for bikes, and they're smaller so it's harder to gauge speed. Coming up behind a slow car is easier to tell than coming up behind a slow biker.

Bikes are invisible so they need a different set of tools, drivers automatically have a reaction time delay when it comes to bikes (if they see them at all) because they don't look for them. You're also safer in cars, you can take someone popping you in the rear as a little fender bender. Same impact on your bike, you're coming off it into the street. All of these downsides need to be countered with advantages or you're just on a death machine. A slow bike has neither the safety features of a car or the ability to avoid trouble like normal bikes, you're at the mercy of the road on them.

They definitely have an advantage when it comes down to around town. My Grom has saved me from a lot of shitty drivers because it can swerve and turn on a hairpin, I think the min turning radius per the manual is 6 feet. However, short wheelbases and light weight mean issues with stability at high speeds and susceptibility to winds. A strong gust of wind while on a bridge or just the pressure wave from a big ass truck in the oncoming lane is enough to toss the bike all over the road.

I'm not saying big bikes are better always, they definitely aren't. The argument is something redlining at cruising highway speed for other drivers leaves you with one less option when shit hits the fan on the highway, it's objectively less safe when your options are more limited.

I never said I couldn't go between lanes. However, Washington has those reflective bumps between lanes with huge divots where the reflectors have been ripped out. Changing lanes/splitting requires a level of focus to avoid them. I could have done it, but I chose to brake instead because I knew I could, plenty of following distance. Maybe a different rider would have done something else, but they also could have gone for a split/lane change, hit one of those big fucking holes that's every few feet and upsetting the already nervous front wheel.

I feel like the people making these arguments for small bikes on the highway have either never actually been on a real highway or are Euros. Little bikes can't keep up on American highways.

Someone is tailgating you because you're slow, you see someone coming in to merge who doesn't see your tiny bike. Can't brake because the dude behind you, I guess you could swerve or you could just juice it on a real bike and not elevate your heartrate.

Using speed to get out of things is rare, but I dunno if maybe people just have a different philosphy on riding or whatever than me. I like to have all my options available to me, knowing I can brake, swerve, juice it, or any combination of those depending on what happens. With a tiny bike, you got braking and swerving, that's it. Sure, they're good at that, and it will be enough *most* of the time, but most of the time isn't good enough for me. If you're okay with taking that option off the table, then cool beans man get yourself an anemic 250, but you're gonna have to get creative when the time comes wherein you need speeding up to get away, but only have slowing down in your toolbag.

Looking for commuter shitbike that isn't super new or expensive (I'd want the NC700X if price wasn't an issue, but it's just too new)

Should I get a last generation ninja or the newer generation? Is it worth the extra cash just to not have to deal with carburetors? What about the MPG Vs. the old 250 if I get the smallest displacement one? Also, does insurance classify them in some way that will totally fuck me? (calling them a sport/stunt bike when i only have 250cc or something)

The fact that you would consider stopping in a live 3 lane mid corner because you see a car shows why you think displacement is the source of your issues

Turning also made it a glancing blow so it mitigated damage to myself and the bike(which is unfortunate because I wanted to sell soon so when I was waiting st the hospital I was thinking it would save me the trouble if it was written off)

It has nothing to do with tires. As more force is put into a caliper, more sensitivity is lost. With 2 discs you have another caliper to take force off each other... Regardless of tires.

It also has the added. Benefit of heat dissipation, but it's mostly because not much heat is put into It in the first place.

not him, but if you have no feel because of large ratio between master and slave needed to stop with one disk, then riding skill being equal, the bike with better braking feel can brake closer to the limits of traction safely.

But you are drunk, so go to sleep.

That's why they all come with ABS now so you can just grab the lever with four fingers and squeeze it to the handlebar when you need to actually stop.
>>
>>17793264
So why do higher displacement bikes run two front discs? I'm genuinely asking. I dont feel confident emergency braking with all the shit about locking up the front and endo'ing, lowsiding due to rear brake locking, and the concerning amount of stopping distance it takes me in an emergency.

There's been times where I've braked so hard my handlebars started rocking back and forth or I fishtail. What exactly causes that beaides my own fault? Locking up the front and or rear? I'm seriously considering pussying out and getting ABS. I reason new bikes come standard without even an option to opt out of it for a reason.

Also does engine braking having any actual emergency use? I just pull in the clutch and focus on both brakes when I need to stop ASAP. Honestly I engine brake more for the fun of it, sound, maintaining RPMs, and in the back of my mind to break in/get used to the engine.

Two disks are: Less heat, more feel,

If you are fishtailing you are locking the rear. The harder you brake, the more weight goes from the rear to the front. You should probably stop using the rear brake.

The only thing you can do wrong when locking up the front is not let go fast enough.

I think ABS is a terrific safety feature. Only people with very strident opinions will disagree. It's a position with guaranteed replies.

Engine braking has one great use... It lets you hang the tail out on a Supermoto without touching the rear brake. PLUS, as engine braking cannot lock the rear as long as the engine is running, you keep (some) control. If you don't have a supermoto, or at least a large thumper, it's not so useful.
>>
>>17793523
For improved lever feel and heat dissipation, and for a marketing point.

Just practice quick stops. Make it natural. The rear end will get really light and skid or lift really easy when you're braking hard.

If you need to stop ASAP it's probably best to focus on the brakes. Pull the clutch in as needed. There are some cases where you might need to get back on the gas quickly again though, so if you are capable of downshifting at the same time it is helpful (but not for the engine braking effect). For planned stops it's almost always best to keep the engine engaged most of the way down.

I quit everything except occassional caffeine when I'm out past 12 am and or on really long rides. I recently put out 200+ miles on a single group ride due to problems towards the end of getting lost but I made it home safe and (not) in trouble.

I do admittedly still struggle with shitarettes though. Smoking after rides was such a ritualistic habit of mine that when the guys smoke constantly during outings I give in. Self control issues, applicable to my riding as well.

>So why do higher displacement bikes run two front discs

It's not necessarily higher displacement bikes but it is heavier bikes.

When you transfer that energy of the bike moving forward into heat in the braking rotors you need to think that for any given speed more weight=more heat into the rotor(s).

It takes a while for the rotor to shed this heat into the air. Just about any bike can be slowed down a few times on only one front rotor effectively. The problem comes if you continue to do it over and over and keep putting heat into the rotors without allowing enough time between braking applications for them to shed their heat.

So we put two rotors on the front because for more heat carrying capacity. It also doubles the area for shedding the heat created.

I agree and will almost definitely get ABS/convert kit my next bike. Hopefully a street triple r depending on budget.

>An ABS equipped bike will stop just as quickly as a non-ABS bike if ABS isn’t engaged.

>A non-ABS equipped bike will take longer to stop if a wheel locks than an ABS equipped bike when ABS is engaged.

http://www.therideadvice.com/abs-motorcycles-vs-non-abs-motorcycles-need-motorcycle-abs/

I ride my ride fuck trying to impress people on a mongolian fur trading site. The way I see it after reading this if ABS comes on it means I'm braking like a retard so I can learn and correct without the expense of risking a crash. Furthermore I am definitely not using maximum braking force potential out of fear of locking up which is deebly goncerning. Early bike ABS has improved vastly over the years too whereas it used to come on left and right due to being a copy over of car ABS. The guys sticking to non ABS are similar to those sticking to gasoline over electric engines imo.
>>
>>17793634
To expand, the pads get hot, they are really only cooled by the rotor. That head transfers through the pistons (cooled by the brake body, which also gets hot) and into the brake fluid. The brake fluid will eventually start to boil right where it touches the piston, and create tiny bubbles of brake fluid vapor. This vapor is compressible, and the rider experiences this as a soft mushy brake lever, and fade. Eventually the rider will be able to pull the lever all the way back to the grip.

This is bad.

On the other hand, adhesive (rather than abrasive) pads work best hot. So a lot of development work has gone in to keeping heat in the pads and away from the fluid in recent years.

Correct. Two disks allow a better ratio of Master Cylinder to slave Cylinder while still providing acceptable stopping power. In order to get acceptable stopping from a single disk, you need a greater leverage ratio between master and slave cylinders. This reduces feel.

ah, kk. Grats on coming job, I know how much of a relief it is to have things lined up rather than all up in the air.

>There is no excuse to have a single disk and fewer than 3 pistons per disk.
>None.
>If your bike does not have that brake configuration it was built to meet a price point, not built to meet a standard of performance.

Funny I can stand my mememoto on the front wheel easily using just 2 fingers with just 2 pistons in the caliper and a single disk.

You can change the ration to anything you want, regardless of single/dual disk. It's a simple matter of math ( the ratio ) . The number of disks/brake pads does not matter.

You can make a single " feel " exactly like a dual with the same amount of braking with the correct ratio.

You divide the force required by the brake pads in half by going to duals but the " feel " does not have to change.

Honestly it wouldve solved the problem of repairs due to the massive market of crashed and stolen gixxer parts on the market. Guy in my club had two of his gixxers stolen in half a year. One in Pennslyvania the other in New Jersey.

But it wasnt a child. The owner of that scooter was a 30~40 year old beaner and he rolled away on it completely silently due to it surprisingly being electric. I doubt it was his sons.

This is extremely budget stuff mang, bro got his XS for 150 three years ago and rebuilt it with tools you d see in a homeless camp, he got 25k miles out of it and it's still "running" just some electrical issues were clearing up, his birthday gift from me is a 50 dollar thing of wire were going to rebuild the wiring harness with on his xs, and then rebuild the harness on my new gs.

I actually already bought the gs for 100 bucks today, gonna drag it out tomorrow and see what's what with it. At the very least I part it out and sell the rest to a junk yard, honestly even if I lose 100 bucks on this, it's whatever, the chance to make this awesome thing my project bike is fuckin cool.

the vulcan is pretty cool in how little of a shit the designers gave about a "classic" look.

Wonder how it would look if they gave it the "Sugomi" treatment.
