A 1975 fucking Honda Goldwing cafe racer. It's so god damn hot. I wish it wasn't 1500 miles away. If it was in town I would pay the $4800 in a heartbeat.

That's about a 2500 dollar motorcycle and stripping a Wing is easy to do yourself. Naked Wings are a thing and it does get rid of a lot of the shit I hate removing to work on them.

The carbs should never be left to sit for a long time with fuel in them. They aren't horrid to clean but it's not fun either, and I like carbs. (Best way to remove them is unbolt the intake manifold stubs after removing the airbox, then place clean lint free rags over the intake ports on the cylinder head and slide them out to the right. You'll want LONG needle nose pliers to get the throttle cable.

I can't imagine how fast it would be. 1100CCs, designed to have fairings and saddlebags and big seats and two overweight elderly americans riding on them at highway speeds. With a driveshaft and all that power, the low end torque has to be pretty fucking strong. I bet from a dead stop that thing is ferocious

I'd honestly recommend at least the CB500F. I have a buddy with one and it's barely enough bike to keep him happy anymore, but it's at least got decent legs for reckless speeding here and there.

less powerful, worse suspension and a spaghetti frame compared to a drz400.
And the drz400 isnt exactly known for having a great frame or even decent suspension so i am sure you can imagine how bad it is on a drz350.
only thing the 350 really has going for it is it's lighter by like 10kg.
>>
>>17784294
Used SV650 is well below that range and is a better bike than anything you have mentioned
>>

just get the cheapest one you like and spend the rest on tyres, gear, fuel and tools. I think a 250 is the minimum you should get just for getting road speed but people still have fun with a 125.

the most important thing for a beginner rider is to just start riding.
if you're getting bored of a bike as quick as people say you will you're not riding for fun enough.

You also need getaway speed on a bike. I actually overlooked this when I got my first bike, and as much as I love it, I can't take it on the highway. I have a 186cc bored Grom with a lot of aftermarket shit, it gets up to 80mph without too many problems and can cruise there. However, it does take some time, I am in 4th (it's just a 4 gear box) by 45mph and it's a slow climb the rest of the way.

I thought, "Hey, I can reach highway speeds, so I'm good." Then I encountered a situation wherein I had to brake pretty hard on the highway to avoid an idiot who lost control. The bike handled great and I avoided a collision, thought I was in the clear. Then I realized I'm going 40 on a highway where people regularly go 80 and ever so slowly accelerating. A guy had to brake/swerve to stop from rear ending me because he couldn't tell how slow I was going. I ended up having to build up speed on a shitty shoulder, hoping for a chance to merge into the flow again.

Something with barely enough power to hit highway speeds is not going to have enough power to save you from shitty situations.

I'm thinking of making an offer on this CB400.
He says,

16000kms, lams,
Front and rear rosso corsa (plenty of tread left)
Comes with Spare set of tires (used)
Ixil muffler
Original muffler will be supplied
Rwc will be supplied once buyer is firm
Will throw in motul chain lube (brand new, never used)

I was originally looking at an R3, but this isn't much more expensive and I was told I wouldn't grow out of it as quickly. Thoughts?

Depends on the bike and if it has been maintained. On a Goldwing owned by a meticulous boomer, 100 thousand miles would still be reasonable to purchase, vs an sxv550 owned by some boyracer 22 year old who smokes pot, over 5k miles would be pushing your luck.

basically jap 400-600cc bikes for 3-5k with anywhere between 20 to 50+ thousand kilometres, that sort of shit

The roster is pretty wide, but the handling feels wierd, mostly because you can't /feel/ what the bike is doing, i can't play it outside of helmet view

I saved for ages and bought her a $4k ring, which no one was expecting.
A couple of nights later she asked what bikes I was interested in, and I told her I didn't have any money after buying the ring. She basically said don't worry about that, I should get what I want and she'd help pay for it.

Second this.
And GTA online is fun, just because you run circles around all the cars. I used to literally spend hours getting stoned and buzzing random players, just to see who'd get frustrated enough to play tag. Great for your "sons of anarchy" cosplay dreams, too---with Motorcycle club themed overworld missions. Also handheld grenade launcher.
Going from semi-sim to full arcade can be a shock, though. I've been sticking to Ride 2 only for the last month or so. Just got the RSV4 after collecting every classic Honda. Shit is, frankly, terrifying.
So yeah. Italians.

Fuel in frame, oil in swingarm
Like on Aprilias the tank is just a plastic cover: underneath there's the airbox
Instead for dual 320s they opted for a rim-mounted, 6pot front brake
The engine is Harley derived and quite frankly the only reason i haven't bought one
Also fuck belt drive

>>

sport bikes are often hooned around a lot so when buying whats more important than the mileage is the overal look of the bike

if you have a r6 with 20k miles on it and it looks like shit, chain is dirty and slacking, sounds bit weird, has scratches and nicks all over, front seals are leaky etc its prolly closer to its death than a r6 with 40k miles and has overal been taken better care of

OK, here's what you do.
Get a tank bag.
Ride around at night.
Run over as many cats, squirrels and possums as you can. Collect the carcasses. Loot them for teeth.
Make bracelets out of the teeth. Sell them. Buy more fuel to kill more animals.
DO NOT get rid of the carcasses. Keep them in the tank bag. The smell will help deter people. If someone doesn't get the hint (e.g. cager says shit to you at stoplights), retrieve one of the half-rotted corpses and throw it into his window. Willy off into the sunset.

nothing, i repeat, nothing is comparable to that kick. its one of the best feelings on the planet. it is a tad bit heavy, and finding tires for r18 wheels is kind of a pain. but i wouldnt give it up for anything else.

DRZ is "better" but it comes down to what you want out of a dual sport. The DR350's frame is good, a lot of people actually prefer it for its strong subframe for racks and luggage. It's air cooled and easy as fuck to work on on the side of trails. The dirt models and late '98-99 models had decent suspension but if you don't mind projects, you can install better forks and a proper spec rear spring. You can big bore it up to 440cc for DRZ power but with 6spd. Plus, DR350 looks like an actual dual sport. The DRZ looks like an obese mx bike.

Full gear, armor pants and all. I behind him and it's one of the scariest things I've ever seen. He was doing about 35mph and accelerating, rear slipped out and then he highsided right under a Chebby Silverado 3500 then the bike tumbled/slid into his legs and munched his ankles. Oddly, he ended up becoming pretty good friends with the truck driver and his wife. The guy felt awful but my friend doesn't blame him at all.

His poor bike (Honda 919) was a total loss. All that survived (iirc) was his battery, power commander, right-side frame slider, and left passenger peg. Not really sure how but the forks, frame, wheels and swing arm all got twisted.

He had no road rash though, and his helmet was split right in half but he only had a minor concussion. Gear saved his life for sure.

It was 4 years ago. He still rides snowmobiles and he recently bought a cheap scooter so he can get back on 2 wheels.

synth technically is better, because you dont need to de-gum your engine every once in a while, and it lubes just as well. (spoilers, it also uses castor oil as an additive)
does not beat castor oil tho. it is still slightly better due to the coating it makes on bearings

I wouldn't buy a used bike I haven't taken for a test ride. I wouldn't buy my first bike without bringing someone along who knows shit about bikes and helps me look for shit that's wrong with it. I wouldn't drive a couple of hours for a bike unless I absolutely _knew_ I was going to buy it, or if I was looking at other bikes in the area while I was there.
Most importantly, don't actually get a GS 500.

Bikes don't stay in their original price ranges in the used market. A ninja 650 and ninja 600 will easily sell for the same price, although they would be a few years apart. You can buy a well kept, high end machine for budget shit poo in loo SEA scooter prices just because it's an 05 instead of an 07.

I recommend learning to ride on a very small bike that does not go on public streets and then getting a four cyllinder with not more than 90ish at the wheel and a "boring" torque curve so it's not savage off the line. Shitbikes aren't going to help you learn to ride more safely. Staying off public roads where you can easily be forced into bad situations or trick yourself into them will.

Your small bike should be provided by a friend who wants to help you out or professionally administered riding classes. And then that's it, it's over, you give it back, you had your period as a learner. You've invested maybe $400 at the end of all of it and you know if you should ride a motorcycle or if you are a dumbass that whisky throttles over bumps and has to think about how to turn the fucking thing.
>>
>>17786247
Oh and yeah you can always buy a shitty used and abused 600 for 2 grand and promise yourself to short shift everywhere. You probably will anyways.

This is a detuned i4
>>
when i started on an inline two i was always hunting and shifting for a rev range where the engine felt comfortable and never found it

in the first five minutes of riding a V twin i was instantly happy with the way the engine was making power
in the first five seconds of starting up an I4 i was comfortable, and it just buzzed along and sailed down the road at however fast you wanted it to go
every V4 i've ever gotten to ride has been pure sex
and thumpers are a proper sort of exciting in the way they make power. it's like riding a turbo tractor.

basically everything is better than the typical ptwin

The vast majority I4s are tuned for a little more power these days. It's not that the engine layout has to be revvy, but if you have a lightweight, oversquare I4 in a light vehicle that doesn't demand a lot of torque to move it's well suited to it so why the fuck not

The bike is very heavy, try looking for a Honda nighthawk

yes that bike has way to much low-end power for a beginner.

Yep, I'm starting a new job this week so just doing the shakedown run on my 125 today and holy fuck was it scary.

Normally my commute is pretty slow and never need to go beyond 40mph but now I need to go further out and take an A-road in the country, I thought it shouldn't be too bad but it wasn't even that windy but was hard as fuck! Although going balls out I fucked up and shifted too early and just couldn't break past 55mph, it was so bad a fucking lorry overtook me. On the way back home it was much better and even managed to get the bike up to 70mph after an age, overall though it was difficult as fuck and I'm in dire need of something better.

any 125 with 15bhp is capable of 70mph without too much problem, even 80mph if conditions are alright.

I used to ride a YBR 125 for nearly a year and over time you get accustomed to riding flat out at 60mph on A road/motorway. Just move to the side and let people pass if there's a queue forming behind you.

Looks great, did have one a few years ago.

Easily the worst handling bike I've ever ridden, everything else was nice though.
>>
poorfag here, downpipes on my bike look like shit but don't have spare cash yet to get a new system.

Wraps, are they any good as a temp fix to hide my shite pipes?

If they're chrome, scrub them with aluminum foil and water.
