Ride was fine. 100km there, 100 back. Nothing exploded, neither lung collapsed and no blood exited me.

It was nice going basically the whole highway section at about 160-180 km/h. A toast to the highway patrol - may I never meet it.

I want to get a bike, and I've been studying maintenance, technique and ride ettiquite. I have my eye on a 1991 Suzuki Bandit 400 that is selling for 1100. Good choice? What should I look for when checking it out? Any knowledge that might help?

Thank you, that all seems simple enough. My main concern, is I kind of want to ride it around slowly in 1st gear to make sure it at least does that, if it fires. The ad says it needs TLC, any bike does, so ill ask the seller when I get the cash together. But I need to learn about shocks, is there any other concern with inspections/emissions?

>>
>>17778185
>inspections/emissions?
inspection is usually just to make sure the bike is safe for the road, and visible but the details will vary depending on where you live, not every state has the same requirements. there isn't much to worry about with emissions unless you are from California and even then bike emissions aren't very strict so long as your bike isn't straight piped.

>bike needs TLC
just be wary that it isn't over your head or over your budget, get as much info from the owner on what the bike needs and do some thorough research into what the repairs will entail

If you cannot defend your bike, you'll not have it for long. In the somewhat distant past, you could have worked for awhile then taken a year or so to do something like that while cruising the country and seeing what's up state to state. But the huge numbers of homeless people have changed how society would treat you if you tried that.

It's more dangerous than ever if other homeless find you camping with your bike. You can carry a gun, but it's useless if someone king hits you.

Travelling on a simple motorcycle has something to recommend it but hippies are (statistical outliers aside) fucking stupid.

If you want to give it a try and actually care about the scrambler part, I recommend using a solid mount older Harley Evo Sportster as they make excellent scramblers (the original intent of Sportsters).

Unlike Hinckley Triumphs it's effortless to get Sporty parts nearly anywhere and they are very simple to maintain while being quite reliable. If need comfort, get a rubbermount but those are rather heavy for scrambling use and I expect you really just want looks.

Throwing your life away randomly is retarded. Make some cash, learn your machine, then go have some fun minus being an idiot. You could spend much of a year going between motorcycle events in the US.

Norton Commandos are beautiful, quite delicate (transmission) but very well supported and not very expensive or difficult to work on. Parts availablity is excellent.

You need to be a mechanic to keep one on the road. They are a nice third or fourth motorcycle. If it's not restored it's likely because he's not clueful about Nortons.

What is everyones opinion on a 2017 Hyosung GT500R as a learner bike? I just want to buy something cheap and neat looking as a toy for city and country rides.

Opinions on it? Worth the money? Or would it be better to buy a used GT500R bike from after 2010?

daytona isn't practical for road tripping or the nyc riding i do. I used to daily a gsxr750 and the striple is miles better everywhere but the track.

even then, it's just as capable on the track - really only needs a slipper clutch + steering damper and you can throw some track plastics on it.

There's a 300 cbr? If you were dead set on a small bike I'd go with a ninja 300 - far easier to find used, at least in the DFW area. You are planning on buying used, right? . And the ninja 250 reviews better than the cbr 250.

I'm inclined to agree with >>17779521 for the most part; the cbr 500 is quite decent. Looks nice, has a bit more oomph. But people say its power increase over the 300's doesn't match its weight increase, and that the 300's and 650's are better balanced in that regard.

I was thinking about getting a 250 to start with, then a 300 cause highway riding, then a tiny girl at the MSF class told me she had a cbr500r already (she later failed) and I googled and started thinking they were the perfect bike, then I talked to a couple of riders I know and dbt and they said get a 650, lol, Texas freeways, heavier is more stable in wind, available power is safer, etc. So now I have pic related 2005 sv650s and love it.

$2500ish USD, fuel injected, price close to the buckets of 250's around here.

Ahh yep; I'm on the northside myself.

Gumtree has a single gt650 within 100km of the cbd; it's a grand. That tells me it needs to see a mechanic and will cost extra $$$ (likely an extra 1-4k depending what's wrong. Best steer clear)

Bikesales has a 2012 with 40k km for 3.7 (they've over priced it as fuck; you could likely haggle it down to 3.1[or less] with onroads included if you're savy- these things are supposed to be cheap at that age with that much use)
ANd there is also a 650 Comet for 3.3 (private sale) with 22k km on it. You'd have to go over it super meticulously; but that'd likely be an alright deal and you could haggle some too.

That said; these do sell a little slowly because people think they're chinkshit; so keep saving and see if you can spot a good one or such.
>>
>>17780149
And that said; You seem to know what the issues with them are (electrical; namely the rectifier and ECU)
So buying one in running condition (and roadworthy of course) then going through and upgrading all the electrical stuff is sound.

There's a 2003 Suzuki GZ250 for $2200 near me that only has 1500km. Good choice for someone looking for a decent beginner bike that won't cost a ton in insurance?
>>
>The virgin ride
Europussy approved "beginner bike"
Thinks hondas are the best bikes
Wears all his gear all the time
Consults the internet for every motorcycle related decision, doesn't know how to do anything by himself
Keeps his bike stock because he intends to get a new one once a year and thinks harmless mods hurt the resale value
Denies girls rides if they don't have helmets
Eventually convinces himself that you "don't need" a faster, better handling motorcycle than a GS500
Uses special motorcycle luggage and a special motorcycle backpack
Still pretends to care about shit that only matters on a racetrack on the internet
>The CHAD STEED
Bought the bike he wanted
Knows Suzuki makes the best bikes
Doesn't need gear because he doesn't crash
Comes from a long line of self sufficient men, figures shit out on his own
Blings his bike out and makes it into a hella badass streetfighter, sells it for twice its original value
Gives girls rides
Brings groceries home by hanging them from the handlebars
Has never been to a racetrack, DDs a stretched hayabusa
>>
>>17780866
depends what else you can find for $2200
>decent beginner bike
sure, it's a little slow but beginners will have fun with anything that drives on 2 wheels
just give it a good check over to make sure it's actually 1500km and not actually rolled past 99999km

My pops bought me a almost scraped z200 for R500 ($40). Thats what I learned on. Once I was decent enough for the road he got me a 1994 XT, then a KLR650 some years later. Now I have a DL-1000.

Shouldn`t have bought the lad a 4cyl super as a first bike anyway.

>>
>>17780881
I'm certainly skeptical, though it would be odd of the seller to mull over whatever issue it had for almost 15 years before trying to sell it.

Is there even an easy tell that an odometer has been rolled back?
>>
>>17780929
I don't get the point in putting your bike in nutral, just turn it off and save the fuel.
>>
>>17780934
Do you also do this while driving cars?
>>
>>17780932
a lot of bike odometers only read to 99,999
it is fairly easy to just ride it long enough that it goes over to 0 again especially if it has a kilometer scale
easy way to 'tell' could be opening the odometer housing and looking for tool marks but you can't be certain
>>
>>17780937
No but only because my cars radio cuts out for a second when you start it which is annoying as fuck.

Also neutral is annoying to find on my bike and it starts so fast it's really a no brainer.
>>
>>17780929
Instead of doing that I just ride to the front and tell the angry guy in a truck that he has no right to complain about me breaking the law to get over the roads faster since he was at the front of a line of traffic going 40mph in a 30 zone.

Presumably you have spools + stands already?
Looks like that kit hits most of the basics I've been getting here and there. Some extras might be:
>Vernier caliper (larger tolerances)
>Micrometer (smaller tolerances)
>Set of feeler gauges (valve checks)
>Run-out gauge (straightness checks of rims, rods, etc)
>loctite and anti-seize
>>

hex key set
an assortment of different types of pliers

depending how much you want to do, more 'specialized' tools for measurement like feeler gauges, dial gauges, micrometers,
>>
>>17781053
Most bikes are metric allen, a few small metric sizes, and a few large metric sizes.

Get a good short and long metric allen set, a good shallow and deep standard range metric socket set, and then buy individual large diameter sockets for things like your axle bolts/nuts. A good ratchet and a good torque wrench, then look at YOUR bike and buy any specialty sockets you need.

If you have a Jap bike JIS screwdrivers are real nice to have.

no, you're a sucker for falling for CL scams. Expect to pay around $8k or more for the "R".

KTM has positioned themselves as a "high end" brand, moreso on the street side than the dirt side. the bikes are not as polished as the Japanese, whether or not they represent an acceptable value for the money is entirely up to you.
