It has nothing to do with security. It has to do with clueless people saying

>hey i see you like something BUT WHY DON'T YOU LIKE WHAT I LIKE ITS THE BEST?

It annoys you. The thing they like is associated with being annoyed. The thing they like becomes annoying. A symbol of annoyance, in the same way anime quickly becomes a disgusting symbol of virginity to anyone who interacts with its fans.

People don't normally do this with literally anything else. Food, clothes, movies, people somehow know how to shut up and acknolwedge that different tastes exist, but with bikes, all of a sudden otherwise normal people start acting like 4chan shitposters, especially if they either own the bike they think you should get and have ridden nothing else, or don't own a bike at all. Hell, it also happens with cars.

And the US being what it is with its singular native manufacturer (indian is canadian now), it happens with harleys more often than it happens with hondas, especially among the crowd that doesn't even have a fucking bike.

The 80 bux was the labor cost for adjusting the valves. He gave me another $60 to fix the rear brake. He's paying for all the parts.

Without factoring the violently expensive costs of maintaining a Harley, or considering a cheaper Japanese brand, it's still more sensible.
And don't fuck around with displacement like these aren't directly comparable. That's the small vfr to the cheap tourer, and the cheap sportbike to the smallest Harley.

The rr sale includes the rebel 500. Try cycle trader in your area.
It's cheap, economical, easy to repair, and yes--pretty cool looking now.

Dont buy new, buy a used bike like a sv650 or rebel or whatever, ride it for a month or 2, drop it, then sell it for near what you payed. Then buy a new bike

Sorry, I was under the assumption it was a used bike.
This is just some advice, take it or leave, it's your money, but I recommend not buying new for a first bike. There is a good likelihood you will want something else rather quickly, and then there's if you drop it, which is also in high probability.
I feel the rebel would be better than the FZ07 in terms of beginner bike, but the FZ07 would probably be better in terms of money's worth. If you're not an idiot you could do ok on the FZ

All in all tho, do what you think is best for you
>>
>>17429769
I think going Rebel over CB suggests they're looking at cruisers specifically.
>>

Rebels kinda in between cruiser and standard tho.
Also as a first bike, do you really know what you prefer. Kinda gotta ride a few to find your niche

I do hear that. Probably would have never considered a sport-tourer if I hadn't gotten a standard as my first.

Until you damage the luggage and find out that OEM stuff makes third party luggage look like a bargain. The price of the boxes is actually pretty reasonable for the abuse they can withstand.

The cases themselves last, but the manufacturers are getting good at designed obscolescence for their products. See: bike specific racks, painted trim, lighting kits, asymmetric cases, etc, etc.

Nearly dropped my bike at 5mph in front of a small crowd. Was doing a tight turn onto the pavement to park but I'm lanky so handle bars pinned my knee, panicked and touched the front brake which stopped me dead. I jumped off and caught it but it wasn't smooth at all.
>>
>>17429986
Why? Surely you could buy a used big boy bike and use the change to fit it with a luggage rack that could carry an entire (properly butchered) horse (or even find a used bike with luggage, you'll pay about half what you would to fit it in terms of price increase).

Stealerships get full (100%) markup on this stuff. You should be getting at least a 20% discount from list, or start googling for dealers who sell online. The closest KTM dealer to me discounts not at all, one an hour away will give me 10% - 15%, just bought the meme wave brake rotor from a dealer on the other coast, 20% off including shipping.
>>
>>17430083
I'm talking the purchase price, not the RRP. I had a jolly good look round but there was nowhere cheaper, most were at least 40% more than what I paid. You don't need to have an adversarial relationship with your dealer (I'm not saying to be a sucker but don't always assume bad faith). YMMV depending on dealer, there are some shoddy shysters out there.

A motorbike doesn't "attract women." It draws a specific kind of woman. The general population will either look down on you further or get with you "because I can change him."

If you're masquerading anyway, the latter is what you want. Look for daddy issues, but responsible enough to hold her own job.

Or, just date a woman who rides for herself because you both **happen to** ride a motorbike. Like any human with a hobby.

I live in AZ dont complain about heat bro. Its been 117 last week. The best way to do it is to channel your inner mexican, wear long sleeve shit so you can retain sweat and cool off. Drink LOTS of water, get a camelback. Also get one of these http://www.froggtoggs.com/cooling/super-chilly-pad-cooling-towel.html they actually work really well. It helps if you dont wear perforated gear, just prevent airflow and stuff because in +100 degree weather its basically a convection oven. All the sweat will evaporate lmao. If you're only going a short distance just suck it up and hope you dont get heat stroke. If youre riding for fun go really early or really late

No issue there. As a decent human, it just necessitates a higher level of caution when things get rocky.
Reward: Disturbingly clingy, but will never cheat.

If you're a dick, it means she'll sleep with you faster.
Reward: Quick lay, will then proceed down your list of friends until she finds the biggest (literal) dick.

My girlfriend has been abused by every other man in her life. I just happen to not only be the only decent guy, but the largest she's ever seen.

At the target weight of 200lbs, you might have a problem with your height actually. A fit 200 pounder is likely to be at least 6 foot tall, more likely even taller. Majority of sport bikes are unfortunately made for short riders.

As far as I am concerned there are no dual sports with more than one cylinder. Closest thing would be the F700GS and that still weighs 461lbs.
If KTM's new 790 ends up coming in under 400lbs then maaaybe

Only supermoto with two cylinders is the SXV and that's only light enough because it's a race bike that breaks all the time. If Aprilia found a way to make the RXV reliable and have long maintenance intervals it'd be a sick dual sport.
>>
>>17431671
You get what you pay for. The KTM's outclass the jap competition in every way, so they cost more. They also require less aftermarket farkles /usually/.
Supposedly KTM is going to make a 390 adventure, we'll see if that actually happens.

Most stock 701 riders are seeing 50mpg, I get 40-45mpg on my tuned up one, and fucking 35mpg hooning. That's pretty standard from what I've seen though for all big thumpers, maybe a 390 would get 60.

but the KTM and derivatives make like twice the power don't they?

I would imagine if you took a japanese dinosaur and bored it out or whatever to get the power more in line with the KTM it would make the mpg suffer no?
>>
>>17431887
Yep.
Until recently the KTM 690 was 654cc, basically the same as the Jap dual sports. Still made way more power. My 701 is 693cc and makes 68whp with a pipe and pod filter. To make an XR650R make this much power it'd be a fully built race engine on race gas, none of the other dual sports can make that much as far as I am aware.
>>
>>17431975
A DR650 can, barely, with a 790 or so big bore kit, headwork, cam, and the usual carburetor and airbox work.

So my rear Pirelli Diablo Rosso II is about worn through and I wanna upgrade to the Rosso III with a wider soft compound patch, would I need to change the front too, since the rear tire will be grippier in corners than the old tire? Or does it not matter

>>

It won't make a huge difference unless you're riding right on the edge of grip, but i'd do it anyway, a front tire is maybe $100.
>>
>>17431996
I can't speak from personal experience, but ProCycle claims that it should be basically the same since the reciprocating mass of the larger piston is the same-ish of the stock one.

Comparing a brand new bike to something that hasn't seen development in over a decade.

Kek.
>>
>>17432012
Liquid cooling, fuel injection, DOHC, much higher compression ratio, probably much larger valves for better air flow.
>>
>>17432012
who knows
KTM's engine is revised every few years, the DR hasn't been updated in 21 years, the KTM is EFI and has shorter maintenance intervals too. There's no reason Yamaha couldn't build a bike to compete with it, they just don't.

>>17432021
Okay compare it to a brand new DR650 then, the DR will do even worse than the XRR.

>>17432026
The LC4 engine is SOHC.
>>
>>17432013

Such a waste of precious rubber

>>
>>17432021
Also you realize the 690 has been around for like 15 years too, right? KTM just updates their shit, unlike Jap companies. That's part of the reason the KTM's cost more.
>>
How do I get rid of my chicken strips? Just lean and pray?
>>
>>17432044
Just go to a parking lot and practice riding in circles until you scrape something hard, then post pictures on /dbt/ and say you passed a bunch of sport bikes on the touge.
>>
>>17432050
I don't really care about appearances, I just wanna stop slowing down.
>>
>>17432026
google says its sohc. for liquid cooling the xr650r mentioned above is liquid cooled isn't it? fuel injection is a clear difference. for the compression apparently the old jap bikes hover around 10 and the ktm around 12.

how much of a difference does the compression make and what allows them to have the higher compression? also I know that fuel injection is supposed to be leagues different than carburated
>>
>>17432042
Actually this is kinda wrong, the LC4 engine has been around for that long, the 690 bike itself has only been around since 2008.

>>17432056
You can't really break it down and point to individual things. KTM decided to build a more expensive, higher powered engine with a little shorter maintenance intervals, and continually refines the design, the Jap companies decide to build cheaper engines with longer maintenance intervals and not change them for decades because people keep buying them. That's about the long and the short of it.

>>
>>17432065
Also, talking about price beyond the engine, KTM chooses to use generally higher quality components in their bikes and charge more for them. All of the bolts on my 701 are anodized torx cap hex heads, more aluminium and stainless shit, composite materials in place of steel etc. That's not to say they don't have issues with parts, like for example their starter motors were shit for a while.

>>17432075
Because the differences in engine design are cumulative, and all the decisions that went into the design were a compromise, KTM just chose to err on the side of power more often than the Japanese companies.

>>17432087
You're talking shit about me comparing two brand new bikes in the same market category, if you can't compare them then you can't compare anything.

>difference does the compression make

Higher compression allows you to run a richer mix and actually use all the fuel, so you get more power in the stroke

>what allows them to have the higher compression

Interference valves, more sophisticated piston and cylinder head geometry, and also having your customers buy higher-octane gas. All of which is more expensive.

High performance engines always have a few things in common:

Short stroke, large bore: this allows a shorter, fatter connecting rod for the same cylinder displacement as a long-stroke, small-bore engine, so the con rods can withstand higher RPMs. It also allows a larger cylinder head, which means more airflow (larger valve openings).

Four valves per cylinder: more airflow, again.

High compression ratio: more complete burn, richer mix, more power per stroke.

Basically engine power is torque X RPM, so you maximize RPM with a shorter stroke and as much airflow as possible, and maximize torque with high compression and premium gas.

These things cost money, however, because a higher RPM engine has to be engineered to withstand greater speeds (obviously), and machining convoluted cylinder heads is more expensive than just milling out a hemi and calling it a day. Also cooling becomes more of a problem.

>now we can raise the redline 1k since it's more balanced
>now we need an even more aggressive cam
>now we need bigger shafts in the bottom end so they don't snap under the added power

Transmissions convert HP to Torque. It's Power that moves you down the road.

Google tells me the DRZ400 puts out 25.6 ft-lbs of torque. The Duke 24.28. KTM just has a higher level of engine development. I don't know if you've noticed, but Suzuki has been essentially broke since the Great Recession of 2008.
