Parts expensive: Not really. I pulled together a complete rebuild kit for about $200.
Labor expensive: Nothing special. They are pretty damned simple, if you've rebuilt a lawnmower engine you could handle it yourself.
Time expensive: Potentially. That complete rebuild kit I mentioned above included hard parts coming slow-boat from Taiwan, bearings from Vietnam, and gaskets from Italy.

The ones they hate are straight up clones like the suzuki intruder and cheap crap with inline-two engines.

Goldwings, vmaxes, etc actually hold some respect because they are top of the line shit that competes directly with HD while having their own distinct image, history, and culture instead of bikes that sort of look like harleys from 30 feet away.

HD riders don't even hate sportbikes. It's intruding on their turf that pisses them off, and rightfully so. Everyone is like that in a way. Want to piss of a sportbike rider? Get out a cafe racer and say "these were actual sportbikes, all sportbikes are cafe racers. we are the same, brother".

What are my options? I like the Rebel but the guys in my shop say a 250 will bore me to tears and cannot into highways, so I'm thinking a Shadow or Kawasaki Vulcan 500. What else is out there for me? Do I need the bike to get my license or should I get the license first?

Age and mileage. (Meter-age?)
It's not worth that much. And the "cafe" mods aren't going to do anything by way of performance.
You may as well buy a nighthawk, fabricate a bench yourself, and steal battery cover off an older cb. It'll let you make sure the seat's got a dense foam core to protect your bum. Because amateurs tend to forget to use minimum 3 types. Also keeps performance mods useful, because haphazard bolt ons just shorten the life of the engine.

Do ask him what kind of shocks he put on rear, though. That'll be useful.

The shocks are defiantly not stock, would be neat to know what he used. NOS ones are pushing 400 each these days. I'm not really a fan of the cafe concept (mostly because of the number of hacks out there that cut up neat old bikes and scar them with 3rd-day tech school welds), but the larger real wheel could be nice. The stocks one are a weird old 16" size that is hard to find (all I could find recently were some Shinko 735s).

I'm open to any and all helmet suggestions. I bought a full face matte black helmet with my first bike, now I traded it in and got a new bike, but its matte black as well. I want a new helmet to break up the colors to be a little more visible but every helmet I've looked at that isn't black, I just don't like. Any suggestions?

ATX, I'm >>17398201

Actually got the two stroke intending to own a bike without having to get licensed or insured, but even if you know what you're doing they're unreliable shitpiles, though fun unreliable shitpiles. I'll have it running again soon but it's pretty much only good for farting around the neighborhood. There are people who get them to commute but I doubt I'll get mine to that point.

Pic related, I was originally intending to build a new cruiser style bicycle to move the kit to but I think I'll keep it as is until the bike mulches itself (the drive sprocket literally clamps onto the spokes, riding it is like watching a horror movie. It's fun but absolutely terrifying to ride) and sell the kit. The sloppy aesthetic kind of works anyway.

Electric bikes are going to lag a few years behind electric cars, and electric cars are really just starting to get a real foothold in the market. Mass production of electric vehicle systems and battery components will bring the price down as well. I give it ~5 years until electric bikes are a serious consideration, and ~10 until they're competing directly with ICE.

I'd love to have a nice electric bike though, dat quiet. Mmm.

I'm lusting after the G310 (the GS more so than the R) as well, but the US deployments have been pushed back several times. Last update I saw said 'Winter 2017'.

Why not if its not an R model

my own helmet was very expensive
but I have to wonder
the cheap ones also managed to get through all the tests and got the badges etc etc
why are they worse?
any tests to prove that they are actually worse?

sound and accessory cutouts
i ride with glasses and plugs so 100€ feels like a good enough price point

Polaris owned Victory and recently bought Indian. Indian is the more profitable brand so they shut Victory down and will just produce Indian motorcycles now. They'll probably re-tool the Victory factories and offices to expand Indian production eventually.

E-bikes and scooters are all over in places like China. Pretty much just in the major cities though as their top speed and range is pretty terrible. They're basically used as an alternative to a moped there.

This. Last I heard Victory was making spare parts only as of the first of this year. Dealers are clearing out bikes in and transitioning.

Might have something to do with this tho, practice. I've spent more time on a dirtbke and it was kinda similar to losing it off road. But still I don't really know how I do it, just happens.

As 26 y/o using tumblr for porn and anime shitposting, can confirm every bike blog is either "guns, tittays, engines" or "get lost in an artistic way."

Meh. Let the kids explore life some. The Desert will consume the ones too stupid to pack a jerry can.
>>
>>17399821
Eh, I have a lot of fun when I go out and "get lost" on the bike. I'll go out and ride 30 mins - 1 hr away from home in some direction and then just start taking random rural roads. If I end up getting completely lost then I just open up OSMAND+ on my phone and figure out how to get back to a main road.

I did the same thing when I lived in the city too -- I'd just go out riding with no destination in mind while trying to take roads that I'd never been on before. That was fun too but I enjoy riding on poorly maintained rural roads out in the middle of nowhere vs riding around city / suburban streets.

The pro version of this advice is to look for twisty roads on the map and get lost on and around them. Or dirt roads if dualsportmasterrace.

"guns tittays and engines" ain't so bad as such, but the state of motorcycle tumblr is just appalling. All chopper/cafe shit (nttawwt, but not what I'm looking for) or staged cheesecake pics with models who have never ridden in their lives posed next to Generic Literbike Number Umpteen Thousand. Which is odd, because gun tumblr (for example) is actually pretty OK.

(but maybe there's better out there. if so pls link)

I honestly don't use tumblr, everything I read about seems terrible, including these posts.
But I never thought getting lost on purpose was a hipster thing. Well I suppose if you get lost just to post about it. I do it for my own enjoyment and mine alone, for the sole purpose of actually being alone.
>>
>>17399523
Well then I'll have time to get my cert. I don't need something fast yet. Nor want it. The 310 should be perfect. It supposedly has enough power but not a fast bike by any means. It looks simple, nimble, and easy to handle and operate which is what I want as a learner. Not to mention it's cheap so in the off chance I drop it or lay it down I won't cry over it too bad.

Plus muh BMW

Don't follow this gentleman's (>>17400617) advice, a paltry 600cc supersport will be boring by your third month of ownership, a 1.3 litre turbocharged Suzuki gsx1300r Hayabusa on the other hand, will keep you entertained for as long as you ride.
