>>
>>17330687
Ok, I know this is bait but still...

DONT BUY A USED HELMET.

Helmets MUST fit your head shape and size and are one use only. If it gets a hit it become useless.
>>
>>17330687
Don't buy a helmet off Craiglist
>>
>>17330673
Checked amazon, and the absolute most expensive I can find is a $600 with terrible reviews. It basically just skips the $200 category and goes straight from $130ish to THAT.

Went down to several motorcycle stores here in town. Can't find anything for more than $150, which I grant is pretty close. Never had any trouble with this gear. I just thought $120 was a good price range.

>>

never, ever buy a used helmet. Go to a dealership/shop and buy a helmet
>>
>>17330687
Never ever buy a used helmet. Modern helmets are sacrificial, they are destroyed as part of absorbing the shock to protect your head. If it has ever received a hard knock (even dropping it onto concrete), its protective value may be compromised.
>>
>>17330699
This is worse bait. How is a helmet going to help in a crash if it is useless after it falls off you bike or out of your hand once? They would then explode in a real crash.

Not the same. Air bags don`t always go off, do you tear out the air bags after a light fender bender?

Helmets are fine use your eyes and inspect for damage. If it is cracked and shitty don`t buy it. The damage the really buggers it up is highly visible. Puncture holes and splits.

Where do you guys park when going into a store like Walmart or a supermarket? I see people parking motorcycles on the front sidewalk area at shopping centers and places like Walmart or Lowes / Home Depot but I've never done that before. Parking my bike in a crowded parking lot between 2 huge SUVs or pickup trucks just seems like a good way to get it knocked over when someone tries to quickly pull into the parking spot without seeing my bike.
>>
>>17330847
If there is motorcycle parking I use that else I park on the sidewalk near the entrance. I also park on the islands in the parking lot if I have no other choice. Sometimes I share a car parking with another bike. I just park wherever is the safest for my bike.

Regular parking space. Just don't deliberately park between those two massive vehicles to start with, and park somewhat near the through aisle (rather than pulling all the way to the front of the stall) so people don't have to be practically in the stall hitting your bike to see it. Angles, line of sight, that sort of shit.

I'd honestly be more worried about some vindictive asshole or someone's unattended crotchspawn fucking with or scratching my bike if I left it in that front sidewalk area compared to just parking normally.
>>
What do you guys think of carrying comprehensive insurance on a shitbike? My premium for it is $47/yr w/ a $300 deductible. I paid $2000 for the bike but I have no clue what it'd be valued at by insurance, it's a 90's dual sport.

I'm considering dropping comp. so I can raise my medical payments coverage since I don't have any health insurance (I got taken off my parents' plan).
>>
>>17331063
I pay ~£300/yr for TpFT on a shit bike, you're fine
>>
>>17331062
Well I live in a semi-rural area of Texas, at least half of the vehicles in parking lots here are full size SUVs and pickup trucks. Even if I deliberately park away from large vehicles, odds are that by the time I come back out there will be one or two on either side of my bike. I drive a 3/4 ton pickup truck myself and have a hard time seeing even a small car parked between 2 large vehicles sometimes until I've already started to pull into the parking spot, I personally know people who have come out of a store to find their bike knocked over in the parking spot with signs of someone having hit it with their vehicle. Of course the person who hit their bike never stuck around or left their info, they just drove off.

Yeah not looking for a super sport or anything like that. Still working on getting riding classes. It's not underpowered or anything though. I don't want to go super fast but I still would like to go at a decent pace.

Anything to look for when picking out used bikes?

I know nothing really about them in terms of parts that are easily hidden until ridden a bit.

I have a lot of experience with bicycles and people like to make the bike look nice in pictures and to ride fine for a block but has some serious part wear.

Stick with the japanese brands. Easy to maintain and replace parts if necessary, parts are cheap and readily available too. Careful with buying a real 600cc RR though, since it truly is tuned for the track. Triumph: British, makes the Speed Triple
Ducati: Italian, owned by VW, makes sports and superbikes.

KTM: Made by Nazis and Poo-in-loos, forks break off all the time.
Triumph: Only ever ridden 2 miles at a time (to the nearest Starbucks).
Ducati: Spends more time at the dealer's garage than on the road. Engines explode all the time. $800 oil changes.

82 CM250C bro here... So I'm trying to get better about using all of 4th gear before I shift up to 5th. I tend to be a bit noise adverse, so I usually shift pretty early. Until I get on the highway, I rarely push the throttle beyond half. Doing this makes it pretty tough getting beyond 55. I can just sit there at WOT in 5th gear and the needle slloowwwlllly creeps up. The do-not-exceed on the speedo is 70mph for 4th gear, and I think it could get there. Probably is, at about 48 the thing just starts shaking like a motherfucker. It stops doing so at around 57. I usually don't take it that far as I worry about the shakes. Should I be concerned (and maybe have it checked out), or is it semi-normal to have a 'weird' spot in the RPM range?

Yeah, I'm honestly not impressed. I was talking to the rep about the new Sportster 1200 engines and asked him what the life expectancy is like. He beat around the bush a bit and then said that if you're good about oil changes, maintenance, letting it warm up, etc you can expect 40,000-60,000 miles out of the top end.

He actually managed to say it like that's something to be proud of.

The only way I'll end up with a Harley is if one falls into my lap for a steal.

Any good 50cc bike recommendations?

Hard Mode: No Scooters, Dirt Bikes, ATVs or Mini Bikes.

So far, I've got my eye on a Keeway ACE 50, but really wanted other input.
>>
>>17331837
Just get a 125 or a 250
>>
>>17331824

I actually really like the way the Sportster 1200's look and feel. The riding position is comfy, the bike feels very manageable, it has a lot going for it. I mean, they're even supposed to be stupid easy to work on.

But when you have to baby it like an old man would his pristine Mercury Grand Marquis just to get 40,000 out of the top end on a low RPM, low power motor there's a problem. Get your metallurgy shit together or something, H-D.

If you could buy them used with <10,000 miles on them for like, $3,000 like you can plenty of the Japanese cruisers I might even do it. Everybody wants way too much for used H-D though. It's a weird thing, and the reason I'll probably never end up with one.
>>
>>17331837

>50cc

But why? I've literally owned chainsaws and hedge trimmers with larger engines. Probably significantly more powerful too, considering they're 2-strokes.
>>
>was considering getting a motorcycle for getting around the city I live in, not planning on riding on highways at all since I rarely have a reason to drive my car on them
>it turns out I need to move out to BFN
>will need to drive 30-40 miles to actually get anywhere
>many dirt roads in the area
That really puts a damper on my plans. Would a standard still be good or am I going to want to look at something else? I know I'm going to need a lot more power than what I was looking at originally.
>>
>>17331544
If you are serious, go on each manufacturers websites and look at all the bikes and read the specs and shit for them. Be able to know what their bikes are so like if someone asked about a ktm 1290 duke you would know what it is
>>
>>17331881

Get a dual sport or adv bike.
>>
>>17331779
I've been reading that 100K miles from a sport top end is possible and even easily achievable, but HD owners never get that far before "upgrading" their bikes with big bore kits, big valve heads, etc.

5 hours after replacing piston and rings, honing cylinder, and getting all 4 new valves. Fell for the hard break-in meme.

To be fair there's a chance these could be shrapnel from when it imploded before the rebuild that just didn't drain out with the oil.

>>17331881
If it's a bunch of long/straight roads or highways, try to avoid single cylinder dual sports. Any bike can do dirt roads, but some are obviously better and more comfortable in that situation than others. You might want to consider an ADV bike if you want something that will be pretty comfortable on both highways and dirt roads.

I ask because I met this kid who was a 50cc racer (I myself drive a 125cc but it has no torque what so ever) and he did aftermarket things to it to go fast. Apprently it could go faster than most 125's.

So my '82 CB750SC had the front brakes start dragging, and then completely lock up while riding on the freeway. Once I stopped, I mean completely locked. Couldn't roll the bike an inch.

I had to actually drain the fluid out of the front calipers and ride it with the rear brake only to get it home.

So I took the entire front brake system off the bike last night, disassembled the calipers, took the pistons out, cleaned everything out with brake cleaner and rags, etc. There didn't seem to be a way to easily disassemble the master cylinder, but I did my best to clean it out. Some shit did come out of it, but nothing super nasty. The brake fluid was pretty dark and old though, so that was probably part of it. I'm really not sure what happened here, but I hope just cleaning it out and changing the fluid will fix it.

That said, is there anything I should keep in mind when putting this back together? I haven't bled a set of brakes since I was maybe 12 with my dad, so I'm pretty much learning from scratch here.

Slow.

The Grom is just a bike that Honda built to appeal to "urbanites", coast dwellers, and new riders who have no experience on a bike and are therefore intimidated by full sized machines.

A used Grom would be an ok introduction to motorcycles, but you'd probably end up wanting a full size bike.

And you can lean it over/wheelie and get it into the other wing. The IMS is a great deal, but if I were to do it all over again I'd get an Aqualine Safari, I think the big one has dual petcocks for the wings.

For some reason my shit bike isnt sending power to my fuel pump.

I have continuity between all wires necessary, power where it needs to be and good grounds, but the pump isnt getting voltage, so its not sending fuel to my fucking carb.

Realistically, if I hot wired the pump to the battery, rather than through the relay, whats the worst that can happen?
>>
>>17333748
You the dude with the new relay?
If you hard wire your pump it'll run rich on the bottom end I think, dunno much about carbureted systems with fuel pumps though.
Might kill the pump sooner, but probably not any time soon.

yup, im the relay guy.

New relay did nothing, still nothing happening at the pump. But if I jump the wires to the battery it works. I just want to ride the fucker for 6 months until I can get a decent down payment for a not piece of shit.

if its just gonna run rich on the bottom end, im fine with that, better than running lean.
I ordered a new amazon chinese pump, maybe SOMEHOW thats the problem. it was 20 bucks, so fuck it.
as far as I can tell, the needles and floats are good, so It shouldnt overflow or anything, any when the bowls are full the pump should just keep a constant fuel pressure.
Only thing I can think of, is if I go down, the bikes pump isnt gonna shut off. So ill have to hit the somehow remember to hit the kill switch if I drop the fucker.

I'm beyond frustrated with the fucker

So I lowsided my bike last night. Touched the centreline lane marking which turned out to be freshly painted (no fucking signage) and lowsided. Was going slow, maybe 20-30km so only scratched the fairing and exhaust a bit, tore off right indicator and scratched the front brake lever.

Whats worse than the cosmetic scratches, is that the fairing, exhaust and tyres are now covered in lane white marking paint. I can sand off the crap from the fairing and exhaust (maybe paint that) but what do I do about the tyres?

Do I need to replace my tyres? Is legit over about a third of the rear all over the outer section (where chicken strips are) as well as over the front. Is it safe to sand that shit off or do I replace them? Don't have pics as it happened late last night and I've been too distraught to go and have a look at the bike in daylight. Halp?

I got a grom with sub 1k miles and over 3 grand in upgrades (not even counting labor costs) for 4k. Buddy just bought one today with aftermarket exhaust and a power commander for 2k. There's a lot of dipshits who think groms don't depreciate in value but if you look hard enough, you find some reasonable souls out there.

all of my tools got stolen, so i didnt even have a socket set to take my tank off. had to go to the shop to have the carbs done.

now i have a tool set and a multimeter. This shouldnt be this hard.

nope. they didnt. said it was likely a preexisting condition and when the synced the carbs they said they had to use a bench pump to supply the carbs fuel.

Need some help with starter issues

At least I think it's the starter, I have no idea

Last week, I was riding around and stopped at my house for a couple minutes. When I went out to get back on my bike it wouldn't start. All that'd happen when I clicked the start button was a single click would come from the starter relay and that's it. The next day I went to take the bike apart but tried starting it first and it ended up starting up immrfiatekt

Then it ran just fine for a week.

Last night I went riding and stopped somewhere. When I went back to my motorcycle, it wouldn't start again. Same exact problem. I let it sit for like an hour and a half and now it's turning over. It doesn't start, it sounds like the battery is dying, but it's at least trying to start. I checked the battery and it only has 11.75 volts so I'm guessing that's why it's not starting all the way, but that doesn't explain why it wouldn't do anything just a couple hours ago

Does anyone know what the fuck is going on?
>>
>>17334750
I've got an acerbis tank on my DR650 and it's the same way. I'd rather have that .2 gal be inconveniently available than not there at all when I'm out in the middle of nowhere.
>>
>>17334761
I tried jumping the battery with my car (without turning the car in obviously) which has worked before when the battery is low. Now the battery is reading about 11.15 volts and the bike is definitely dead now
