Mack's Ultra Soft. Comfortable enough that I've forgottent to take them out when I get off my bike. I've even slept with them in my ears.
The main thing I like is that they're soft and not too big so they don't pop out when putting your helmet on/taking it off. Also they don't puff back up as quickly so it's easier to stuff them in your ear for a good seal unlike those terrible big orange ear plugs. I squeeze them and they start puffing back up before I can get them deep enough in my ear.

Yeah, fuck that tank paint. Especially against that battery cover.
Looks like you are probably giving the engine case a once over anyway. Buy a bottle of Jameson and give the cylinder a solid once over, inside and out. If you haven't touched the carb, pull it apart, change everything rubber.

Or, like I do to my shit-scooter twice a year, run an entire can of seafoam through it in a single tank, single sitting.
Which does mean babysitting thr throttle for an hour. Do it with a book in the left hand.

I do want to float this again. Motorbike parenting (irresponsible uncle-ing)

Like shit mostly. They're floats but the internal shape of a supersport fuel tank is all fucking retarded, so it's debatable if you would actually get any kind of useful information at all you don't from the low fuel light.

My bike has a way less fucked up fuel tank and bigger fuel range and the gauge still tells you precisely fuck all until you've been riding 150-200km then drops too fast to keep track of what kind of mileage you're currently getting, so in the city I just fill up when it's flashing and on the highway I always go off the trip odometer for planning stops anyways. There's not enough to be gained to bother risking it.

from what I can tell, you don't really watch the isle of man. there is not a particularly interesting livestream. this is because there are a couple hundred corners across more than than thirty miles of road, compared to a dozen corners on a small track. not enough cameras to go around. not enough airspace for helicopters either because ambulances take priority, and on-bike footage is hard to livestream reliably.

however, you can listen to the radio broadcast, and watch the highlights that are assembled at the end of the day.

CB650 at least looks good.

They are all pretty weak beginner bikes though of course.

Whatever happened to powerful cheap mid-range nakeds? Hornet, FZ-6, Z750...?
>>
>>17313426
The post-2017 650 is only down 5hp on the carbed Hornets and has higher peak torque than any of them that's made way lower down the rev range.

Anyways it's because European license laws changed in 2013 that <95hp bikes became more desirable than anything slightly more powerful than that.

I've used 3M classic foamies for many years on the flightline, in the shop, when shooting and for riding. They help keep your ears clean and you can wash them with your laundry. (I toss them in a pocket or sock.)
>>
>>17313128
>She tries to idle but stalks after 1-3 seconds

"Stalks" is a mistranslation of something (a "hunting" idle that's not stable?) but if the carb hasn't been disassembled and dipped I suggest doing that to make sure the low speed jet, emulsion tube and internal passages are clean.

I have proper chain breakers but for removal I wouldn't hesitate to cut off chains with a zip disk in an angle grinder or grind off the heads of the pins on one side for easier splitting with a chisel or screwdriver because it's faster. I've done plenty of them that way for self and customers. It's perfectly harmless.

This chain breaker design works well. I've used them for many years.

From what I know about triumphs, what other owners have told me is that they can go into the 200,000kms range. There's also the matter of this bike being $4000 cheaper than any other tiger 800 in Canada and that it's local, not an 8-14 hour drive away.

This is a weird one. Way home from work yesterday, steering is suddenly noticeably heavy. Haven't hit/rode over anything, forks at least appear fine looking at them, no fluid leaks (not USD, so even if a seal went the fluid should stay in mostly), bars are straight. So I'm a cruiserfag now. It feels different but still fun. A lot more pickup then my little cbr250r, which I'm grateful for, but I think I'm going to end up missing a windscreen when I ride it on the highway.

Thus far I've taken apart and fixed the turn signal switch and adjusted the rear brake switch. Need to lubricate the return throttle cable by the feel of it. Oil/brake/coolant change eventually. Carbs are weird coming from EFI but not issues yet.

Now I just need to make a beaded seat cover for it...

>>
>>17315070
>How would the rear affect the steering?
With a stronger pre tension you put more weight on the front.
>>
>>17315064
Easy. You just build revs to about 7k then let go of the clutch. Don't let go of the throttle or you'll stall it. When you let go of the clutch the resistance from the road will drop the revs so you need lots of revs to start with.
Personally wouldn't bother getting helmet etc in advance if it's such a short journey

Hey looking into getting a bike. I made a few grand buying cryptocurrencies.

Don't have a license yet but they have a school in my county.

Is it best to buy after that?

Was thinking of a ninja 300. Or is there a better starter sports bike?
>>
>>17315422
"Starter sportbike" is kind of an oxymoron
I suggest getting whatever is cheap, light and reliable in your area
If you're in yurop it might make sense to get the bike first to tra in during your permit, but in the US you should do the MSF
It's like 30$, will get you a license quick and will lower your insurance
Plus you get to learn and crash on a bike that's not yours
>>
>>17315422
pretty much all starter sports bike are the same; just pick ur favourite or whichever fits your budget

- Do training
- Get license
- Test ride a bunch of bikes. Look for motorcycle shows nearby, most will have a 'test ride zone' with a bunch of bikes and outriders to guide you along a pre-set road course.
- Pick a bike you like
>>
>>17315422
From what I hear people saying, 300s get old really fast so you might want to just cut out the middle man and go for a bigger bike right from the start. My first bike is a 600 and I´m having fun on it still.
>>
so what do you do if you get a speeding ticket? Never gotten a ticket before

What is the process of getting motorcycle lisence in the US? (do you got any restrictions on the lisence?)
and what is MSF and what does it give you?
>>
>>17315638
standards ye; supers probably not; dem brakes OP
>>
>>17315656
Go to DMV, take written and practical test (15 questions and a 10 minute test) MSF is a course you can take, it gives you an insurance discount and counts for the DMV test.
>>
>>17315656
>Take written motorcycle test
>take practical exam
>get license with motorcycle endorsement on it
that's it. That's why europeans make fun of the US so much.

the MSF is the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. It's used as shorthand for the Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic Ridercourse, a motorcycle class that's designed for first time riders to learn the essentials of how bikes work and how not to kill themselves on a bike, and how to do low speed maneuvers. When you take the BRC, they give you both tests themselves, and then give you a waiver to take to the DMV.

I absolutely recommend taking the MSF course. Unless you like dying. In that case, break a leg.
>>
>>17315656
US bike training is as useful as learning to drive a car in a toy like that.
>>
>>17315673
Sounds exactly thebsame as here
Except it's 30 questions and you have maximum 6 months to prepare the practical
>>
>>17315656
Slightly varies from state to state:

In NY:

You get your permit which is dumb written test.

The permit allows you to ride with a licensed rider within 1/8 mile of you at all time.

To get a full license you have two options:

1. Schedule and pass the Road Test

2. Complete an MSF coure.

The Road Test is literally fucking the following:

Two circles clockwise in a large box, two circles counter clockwise. And the same with figure eights. Then they follow you around the block. The trick being that you can't (even supervised) ride(rider OR pillion!) to the test. So you either need a friend with a bike that can meet you/come with you, OR hire a driving school to bring a bike for you to road test on.

The MSF, is the "Motorcycle Safety Foundation" course. When I did it, it was a like a 4 hour class on Thursday, and then two days of range time. At the end they give you the MSF Road Test which counts as a license waiver. You bring the waiver to DMV and they turn your permit into a license that day.

Both are an literal joke and most idiots can pass them.

balance purposes

unlike with sport bikes you dont try to balance the bike which is impossible with rough terrain but you try to balance yourself on top of it.

thats why they lean OUT of a turn instead of into it and thats easier when keeping the inside leg straight instead of wrapped around the bike all the way to the footpegs.

Yes, they're in the CB series and they have a ~500 cc engine, but neither is a CB 500. There are two bikes by that name: the old one (inline four, seventies) and the slightly less old one (PC 26 / PC 32 parallel twin, nineties). Neither of those bikes is one of the four you mentioned.

Stupid question
How exact do I have to be with wheel weights? Mine randomly fell off and the only ones I can find to purchase are much larger in size but weight is the same. I can see the outline of the old weights on my wheel so I was just gonna eyeball it and try to center the new weights in the same spot
>>

I wouldnt recommend it but it's your life. Assuming you mean a 600 super sport.
If you are new to the throttle it's pretty easy to fuck up the clutch and end up on the floor.

Alternatives that are still pretty fun and fast are 650yzf or cbr500r

You are wrong, this is a fact. Yes, the CBR500R, CB500F and CB500X are part of the CB series and have a displacement of around 500cc. This does not make them CB 500s, as that is the name of two specific models. You also listed the CMX 500 which is obviously not part of the CB series.

jack it up, take off the chain so it can spin freely, let it spin until the heaviest part is centering itself at the bottom, put weight on the opposite side until it will spin without stopping at a specific point.

thats the gist of it.

some people want moto2/moto3 bikes for honing their skills on tighter tracks. small engine, premium motorcycle.

some people also want to just ride those around because somewhere around 400-500cc puts you squarely in "faster than most cars" territory

this "small engine cheap euro beginner bike, LITER ONLY REAL MAN BIKE, ONLY REAL MAN BUY LITER" mindset is killing the motorcycle market (and my ability to have a good fun bike without liter insurance rates)

how about you test ride them instead of asking us

the best beginner bike is the one you'll actually ride. some people get new liters and turn out shit riders even if they live because they never ride for fear of the power, the discomfort, and crashing their garage queen. some people get liters and ride the shit out of them and turn out to be pretty good because they wanted to ride, rode every day, and worked on improving their riding skills while having the maturity to not go WOT on corner exit or try to drag knee just yet.

not really. Dual sports have meme tax when buying used and hardly depreciate at all after the first 2 years because the designs haven't changed in decades. Good ones can almost never be had for under $2500.
Used sport bikes and other street bikes can be had for that price all the time.
Enduros can sometimes be cheap at first but the good ones are expensive to maintain.

>>
>>17316819

my advice, don't even bother messing with people like this. I don't know what bike you are trying to sell but don't take this shit from people. I had my bonneville up for sale and got tons of "whats your lowest price, trade for a lawnmower, 3k less than asking" etc. Just wait for someone who can text and write sentences coherently at the very least if you can, screen these fucks. this will help you weed out who is actually serious about seeing the bike and making a deal while also keeping you free of the frustration of selling a bike privately. it may take a little more time, but it will make the sale much easier.

I do feel you, when "gofass" is not the object of this exercise. (Although I'm not inclined to go back and check)
Besides the standard question being "do I get a 600," I personally push 300's for disposability. An r3 or cbr300r can be found relatively cheaply, it's new enough to keep the rider from getting stranded; and they're only pseudo-specialized. The milder body position and broad powerband (in the cbr at least) let a newer rider work up to the pace they want---but the smaller engine makes it easier to save from dumb mistakes.

I personally ran a 250 while in poverty, and got the 500 now it's at less risk of getting destroyed. Paid 900 usd to gamble, invest 5k for 100,000 mile use.

Enlighten me, please. What's moto2/moto3 mean? League divisions by size?

Dude, people who value money value money more. Being poor is a consequence of circumstance.
The phenomenon you're confusing for "wasting money" is lack of financial education. We spend it all because we have no means with which to invest.
Alternately, the costs associated with poverty suck up the last couple cents. Can't stop using the high interest card because you don't make enough for gas at end of month, etc.

Same actually applies to "upskill." cant take night classes if you work 60hrs a week to survive.

By the way, we try to teach our children to value people instead, since we can't pay to make problems disappear. Something something Jesus, something something camels.

>2006 SV650 with fuel pump problems for $2000
https://killeen.craigslist.org/mcy/6156780216.html
>Unfortunately, I cannot find information on how to clean the high pressure fuel filter(may not be possible to do), so the bike needs replacement of both the filter and the fuel pump since they are sold together. If I could just clean the high pressure fuel filter, I would not be selling the bike.

>google for two seconds
>thread specifically about cleaning out the high pressure fuel filter: http://www.svrider.com/forum/showthread.php?t=196497
>video specifically about disassembling the fuel injector assembly (which is 90% of the previous process) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqkXI9PDvSQ

This is the cheapest SV650 I've seen posted so far. Presumably whatever hand pump the guy in the thread used to clean his wouldn't be too expensive, and even if that doesn't work, I see a fuel pump assembly for the '06 SV650S on ebay for $40. On the other hand, I have zero mechanical experience and should probably get a working bike to start with.

I'm curious, though. Pumps don't get clogged for no reason. What are the chances that his tank is rusted to hell and back or something? "Bad gas" is a buzzword that gets thrown around a lot in cases like this, but I don't think I've ever had an issue with bad gas in a car (also I buy premium, always). Are bikes more sensitive to sediment somehow?
>>
>>17316967
That is clearly some kind of complex. Let me correct you bluntly.
>don't value money
>values family OVER money
>can't assign blame in a situation without individuals. Citing REASONS people are in poverty.
>Has no regard for the wage of an occupation. I prefer to help people.

So let's get personal: I left high school, joined the Army because my family is also poor. Got that GI bill.
Sent home every spare cent to support my siblings. My father lost his only good job (fire chief) for political reasons, went back to driving local routes. Result: zero savings
Went through AA program to make college credit permanent. Delivered pizza 40-60 hrs to get my siblings established on their own too.
University said I needed math prerequisites for major.
GI bill doesn't pay living stipend to go part time. Lost a year at a corporate job, establishing tenure. Fired because Army triggered genetic mental condition (bipolar)
Family/girlfriend helped support until I could go back to school. Funny how that comes back around.
Finish prereq on Friday. Leaving community college means no pay for the NEXT three months. Looks like warehouse work.

"I was once like you" implies your current condition is desireable. I would imagine the opposite, from the way you interpret everything personally.

I can maintain a multi-million dollar satellite terminal; have developed rudimentary python, Java and Ruby skills; and am trained to kill people with hands.
Too bad there's not a shred of paper proving it.

There's more to life than nickels and dimes, my friend. Maybe reexamine why you reacted so viscerally to my previous post.
I mean, calling us all shiftless is irritating, but you? Shiiieeett.

On topic, though:
+++++++
Speaking of money, though, anybody have tips for budget touring?
If I can collect a little extra, I was thinking of heading east, seeing some old friends from a previous life.
Shelter solutions? Cheap food between Seattle, Bend, OK city, Atlanta, somewhere in Vermont, then Montreal and home?
I've actually never been on a ride for longer than 15 hours... A little nervous.

on the other hand, i'm also looking at this thread: http://www.beginnerbikers.org/showthread.php?21075-Servicing-the-Unservicable-Fuel-filter which looks a lot more serious ($250 part replacement quote, talking about drilling holes, cutting lines to install inline filters, etc). I don't know enough to be able to tell which writeups might be applicable to this bike.

Yah, his tank may be rusted. Peek inside and look. I don't suppose you want to learn about pic related...

As for bad gas, I thought it was a meme until some gas I bought in rural California (and then left in the tank for a year) turned into a varnish so sticky it took nothing less than straight acetone to remove.

How long has the ad been up? If it's been listed for months, you might get him down even further by promising a low-hassle selling experience

If I was, I could just have sucked dick to get into college.

But you did rremind me to add Rochester to the list. Thanks.

Just budget the 250 + labor into the cost. Show up at the guys door with $1500 cash and a truck.

Even if there's rust in the tank it's really not a huge deal, shake some screws around inside and coat it, good as new. Cleaning or replacing the fuel pump will probably be the more difficult part, but that's more bike specific, YouTube videos can show you how easy or hard it is.

>Without people buying brand new there wouldn't even be motorcycle companies..
Talking about beginner bikes here, not about bikes in general. I can fully understand getting your third bike new if you plan to keep it forever and ever, that's totally fine.

>feel free to waste your money on energy drinks and alcohol
Nice assumption there, I don't consume energy drinks at all and only rarely drink alcohol in moderation; I don't go to bars, clubs or other places where alcohol is stupidly expensive either.
