I've completely bled this bike's brakes and they're still insanely squishy. I've tried banging on the rotor to knock the air bubbles out, and now I'm trying this thing I read where you squeeze the brakes for several hours. Any other methods you guys know of to get rid of the air?
>>

Thanks! The red looks good too. Have you had any issues with the subframe cracking? I've heard with enough weight on the tail they can crack

>>
>>17226788

Aviano Italy, the Giro d' Italia passes through on the 26th so there's pink shit everywhere.
>>
>>17226798
no that's how you fix a squishy brake
>>
>>17226760
When you are bleeding the calipers, make sure that the bleeder screw is the highest point on the caliper. If you have it on a ramp or supported at an angle, you can end up with air trapped above the bleeder screw, hence it never gets out. Also remember that there may be a bleeder on the cylinder. If it is ABS equipped, there may be a bleeder on the controller, and there will be a specific procedure for bleeding it.
>>
>>17226811
It's not abs. The nipple is facing straight up. Hopefully this brake squeeze works, it felt dangerous to ride this bike.

Hey /dbt/, just started commuting and exploring on a dual-sport, this is the first time I've owned a dirt bike. Noticed a fair bit of oil dripping down from what seems like the inside of the front sprocket cover this morning. I'm hoping this is simply excess chain lube spraying off of the front sprocket onto the inside of the cover and dripping down the transmission, I sprayed the chain down pretty heavily on Sunday.

Is this pretty typical after lubing the shit out of your chain?
>>
>>17226979
Yes normal
>>
>>17226979
If you notice that it keeps dripping, the seal for the sproket shaft (idk its actual name) might be starting to go. Check your oil levels periodically to see if it is dropping at all

My thoughts exactly. I'm going to give the trans a rinse down after work today and monitor it for a couple of days. Checked the oil level as soon as I noticed it and it's still fine so if it is a real leak it's certainly not a serious one (yet).

It's a 2009 and only has 5000 km on it, bought it off of my father and I know he never road it excessively hard, seals shouldn't be popping already.

>>
>>17226761

You know, I've read that in lots of places, but I haven't had any issues at all.

I've regularly crammed 40-60lbs of shit into my backpack before strapping it there, over literally thousands of miles, sometimes over really rough terrain where I was cramming over rocks, bumps, etc and bottoming out the suspension at times. I never installed any sub-frame supports or anything either.

So, either it's a problem that is vastly over stated, has been corrected on bikes 2005 or newer, or I've just gotten lucky so far.

In that pic I posted I had probably 50+ pounds on the rear fender / back of the seat and another 30+ on my side racks.

What makes the grom better than other 125cc shitbikes?

Edgy yellow fairings that say "honda" on them?

Brakes and suspension that belong on a bigger bike?
>>
>>17227265

The grom is a meme bike that Honda designed specifically to target people in urban settings like Californias coastal cities and university towns across the US. The target demographic is numales and women who have never owned a motorcycle before and want something that's "cute, fun, and not scary!"

Being a Honda, it's probably very easy to ride, reliable, and mostly idiot proof.

You're probably better off buying a 125 with a normal size frame and wheels.

Most full size 125s exist to be cheap as fuck basic transportation to sell to 3rd worlders and Yuropoor high schoolers, the Grom not so much. But full size bikes still have fundamentally better road dynamics, that's why they're that way.

Top speed.

Ideally, you should have more top end power than a fucking corolla, not lower. You know, one of the most common cars on the road. You know what's funny? Watching a corolla try to overtake another corolla that doesn't want to be passed. You know what's not funny? Trying to overtake a corolla that doesn't want to be passed on a motorcycle, and failing. Or worse, a camry. And since they're normie toyota appliances they will slow down to 55mph in a 60mph zone as soon as they've established dominance.

I don't think anyone on a GS550 from the Carter administration is gunning for top speed. And on a bobber style like mine I sure as hell am not. Its purely for the sake of riding and because I like how it looks and how it sounds. As long as it keeps up with my uncles shovelhead and his/my friend's ironhead it fine with me.

The problem with a Grom is not the fact that its not fun, its just not worth it for the price imo. Cheapest groms are still 2k, and they are heavy and weak.
In most every state, with a few exceptions, you can take a cheap trail bike like a TTR125 and make it street legal.
I personally bought one for $700 back in the day, one with the estart option. Got a FMF pipe on ebay for $100, dremeled out the airbox, rejeted the carb. Got lighting and switches and mirrors for it for another $100 from ebay, registered it in Vermont and got a Tag for it. Got BT45 tires for $200. At that point it was slightly faster than the Grom, and you could do everything that you could do on a Grom for almost $1000 under the lowest asking price.
I ended up putting a big bore kit, upgrading the front end to a YZ85 one, and putting on a 26 mm carb, after which it would leave the Grom in the dust. All for still under 2k.
Definitely quite a bit of work involved, but you can see where Im going with this. And its really easy to work on that bike, most all of the shit was done with the bike on the kickstand, and for the fork swap i just ran it out of gas, drained the oil and worked with the bike on its side.
But even then, I eventually sold it because it was just too slow. Even in the city, you still get to higher speeds, and bikes like the Grom or Mine only really let you enjoy them at lower speeds....
Bikefinds.com, and also, don't limit yourself to TTR125. Search for DRZ125, KLX125, CRF150F. Make sure they are the large wheel version with the disk brake upfront.

You must have a pretty shit bike then.

My ~35hp 650cc dual sport shitbike has a top speed of 115mph or higher with the right sprockets.

My ~80hp 1085cc touring bike tops out at 120mph or better.

Literally all the time on craigslist in my area. People think their shit is worth wayyy more than it is, and somehow 1-3 months of not selling the bike isn't enough to change their mind.

He's had it listed for $1600 for over a month now.

Listing says it starts, runs, and rides perfect. Apparently could use new brake pads and tires.

Horrifically uncomfortable or something? I feel like someone would have picked it up for that price by now. I'm... Kind of interested in looking at it.

Harley's are fine except that used bikes carry like a 30% or more premium on sale price because faggots think that they're worth more because of the badge.

When I can buy a lower maintenance requirement jap cruiser with similar performance, comfort, condition, and mileage for $1000-3000 less.

He didn't blur it, it's ground off the tank.

And 4 of the 5 bikes I've owned were older than that and had zero issues with seals, bearings, or gaskets as long as the bike was properly maintained by previous owners.

600 4cyl sport bikes aren't really that intimidating if you know what you're doing.
The power only comes on hard in the upper rpm and they take a little bit of winding up to get there, keep the rpm down and ease into it and they're not too wild but if you go around in 1st or 2nd sitting in the powerband and slamming the throttle open mid corner or abusing the high braking power you're probably going to run into trouble

just test ride one and dont be afraid to open the throttle up and ride it out on a straight at some point, just keep your weight forward if you're in first

the tire is nice and narrow at the front, and fat as fuck in the back, pretty soft, very nicely fitting, then the controls and bars are all in the perfect place for me to cruise all day. i even kinda hung off it, thinking the bars had to be too high for that, but again, to my surprise, it felt perfectly at home being hung off of like a sports bike. it really is in a class of its own. it has cushy suspension, very comfortable when i locked the brakes and rocked it around, but it doesnt feel painfully soft like a klr. i am nothing but impressed with the bike, and it really is a bike made for bikers. its an absolute buffet, it is a little bit of everything, and balanced beautifully, no one thing, and no one aspect is too great that it detracts significantly from anything else. and whlile it did look large, wheeling it around, it didnt feel too large or too heavy. it actually felt very managable, and big in the right places for the right reasons. i am dead certain that it is the perfect bike for me,

a wr250, crf250f, tw200, and dr-z 400 are all pretty good bikes, usually pretty cheap, should be road legal, and if you ever want to run in to the woods and fuck about, its good for that. and since its basically a dirt bike, a vehicle designed from the ground up not to break and be easy to fix, it should be good for that

i'm not the guy from the picture, but i go fishing a lot on my bike, especially fly fishing, and really it's not hard
buy a rod tube like this
http://www.cabelas.com/product/Cabelas-Fly-Rod-and-Reel-Case/710890.uts?searchPath=%2Fbrowse.cmd%3FcategoryId%3D734095080%26CQ_search%3Dfly%2Brod%2Btube
and then do one of two things
either tie it down to your passenger seat/luggage
or what i do is i got a gun sling with the mounting hardware that looked like pic related, and a pair of little quick links like these
https://www.lowes.com/pd/Covert-1-4-in-Quick-Link-Zinc-Plated/50426984

i put the quick links on the nylon handle thingy of the fly rod case, then cliped the rifle sling to it, and now i just throw the fly rod over my shoulder and jump on the bike. its really nice because i can have the tube on my back while im fishing and not worry about locking it on to my bike somehow

This is not terrible. I wouldn't want to have a tube slung around my back while fishing since I keep my net in a rear pocket of my vest, but if it's a cheap enough tube, I'd just leave it on my bike.
>>
>>17229339
i mean that cabellas tube is what i have, its 30-33 dollars depending on how big you need to acomodate your rod, and you can always just throw a padlock in your pocket, or use your helmet lock to lock up to that same little carry handle. if someone really wants it and has a knife, it wont stop them, but it will keep the average joe from just up and walking off with it. another thing i did once, with a naked bike, is i just tied that same rod tube over the handle bars. made it hard to see the tach and speedometer, but thats when i was first starting out and couldnt shift or maintain speed by feel

Why do people meet up for evening rides, especially with strangers from normiebook groups?
I don't get it, you can't go fast because there's likely a slower person and you have to keep the group together, you're at risk of having a squid in the group who's a liability, you have to find a route, you can't really talk to people while riding, ... What's the appeal? I'd rather go out on my own and explore places or go fast on the toegay without having to worry about other riders being left behind or crashing.

How? You can't talk while riding. If you want to yap at people, buy a cafe racer and ride to Starbucks.
>>
>>17229554
You meet up first and you take brakes, you talk then.

Also, especially in groups you can spot the good guys, the ones that don't behave like a dick even in a group.

>taking breaks
I'm sorry, what? If you stop, it's not riding anymore. If you want to stand around with fat middle-aged dudes circlejerking go to the nearest swinger club and stay the fuck off my touge. When I get my bike out I want to RIDE, not stand around smackig my gob.
>Also, especially in groups you can spot the good guys, the ones that don't behave like a dick even in a group.
And? Nobody cares. The ones that DO behave like dicks are the center of attention at the coffee break dick waving.

Don't get me wrong, I like meeting up with 2-3 people I know and riding fast because I know how fast they are and we can make each other push our limits. Meeting up with like 10 randoms from a normie forum is just pointless. Even /dbt/ meetups are better because at least you can have dank memes and even WR is a better rider than 80% of the facebook idiots.
>>

Something I've learned over the years having gotten into many different things for a hobby involving some aspect of "performance" - playing different instruments, competition shooting, learning foreign languages and motorcycle riding - when faced with any kind of stress, you aren't going to perform at the level you have practiced; you will perform at the level you have *mastered*. It's hard to know the difference from practice and mastery until you're actually faced with a test that involves you feeling some level of stress.

the difference between speedway and flat track is that flat track bikes got (rear) brakes and suspension.

I have a cbr650f but the only reason I got it over an older f4i is that in Quebecistan the registration on the f4i was 1400$ a year vs 550$ for the 650. They're not horribly different, the f4 makes 15~ more hp and is a bit lighter, seating position is very close and the 650 has better brakes. I rode both and honestly if you're not a retard an f4i isn't going to kill you. It's way better built than a gs500 as well.

no cop will pull you over for passing on the right if the guy on the left was blocking the lane going slow.

i always switch lanes to the right if they are free, if some guy to the left of me is going slower he gets passed, he is technically not my problem, i have to pay attention to the shit happening in my own lane after all.
>>
>>17227894

The fastest dual sport you can buy. At least then you can romp over curbs or into canals or something to get that edge. Outrunning the cops really just means breaking line of sight and then egressing unpredictably from the area.
