Get a modern, COMMON (better aftermarket support) motorcycle first. Old shit is fun as a second bike if you are or want to become a mechanic.
>>
>>17201699
If you don't see any damage beyond what's described it's wildly unlikely anything more got hurt. That's very minor rashing.
>>
>>17202147
Even if it's common, if it's old the aftermarket will have all sold out because it's normally bike specific and ceases production when the bike does. His bike should still be in production, or a bike with largely compatible parts should be.

If it isn't, you won't even be able to find a fucking luggage rack unless someone is trying to unload their used givi monokey system so they can make a quick $500 (worth more off the bike, you know). If it is, fuck man you can get soft bag racks for like fifty bucks.

If you were riding WOT before inspecting the spark plug then you need bigger main jet for sure.

If going with bigger and bigger main jet seems to do nothing then check fuel filter/fuel cock.

New rider here, everyone keeps trying to sell me a 300-600 but I rode my friends ZX10R and didn't have any problems handling it, just took it slowly and didn't get the big deal where everyone is like "you'll kill yourself lmao"

Is there any good reason not to jump straight to a 1000 considering I felt comfy on my friends? I mean that's what I'm going to eventually work my way up to anyway and it seems kinda stupid to buy weaker bikes I'll end up never riding once I get to 1000cc's
>>
>>17202522

All it takes is that slip or poor decision to give it a little more gas than you should around a corner or something, and you're going to eat shit.

A smaller bike is more forgiving.

Wew everything went fine and I'm home.

>dear diary

On the last trackday I had an electric failure that left me stranded on the way home and before that I highsided, so I was a bit spooked today.

First session was a bit odd, the tires moved around a lot until the last 5 minutes or so. I was wondering if my suspension was too hard or my pressures too low (2.05 front and 1.9 rear) but they improved with time. By the end of the 2nd session the tires were at 2.4 and 2.15 hot, probably I can lower the front pressure next time, but the bike behaves like absolute shit until the tires warm up. Conti Race Attack Comps for those wondering, I'd give them 7/10. They're cheap.

Second and third session were neat. Did some overtakes on the brakes with the bike all over the place and managed to improve my lines in some places. No dragging pegs this time though. Definitely not PR pace, but a good experience.

By the end of the 3rd session I ran out of pad material on a caliper and was way too tired, my fitness is bad and I feel bad. Drank like 5L of water during a 4h period, wew.

Also rode my buddies 2008 fireblade again and my old CBR600F definitely belongs in a museum. The suspension and the brakes and the everything are a gazillion years better. My bike feels like steering the titanic afterwards.

>>17201803
Mine's the old CBR, second from the left.

>>17201813
I try to behave at those events but someone always bring some female cousin or w/e with 10/10 ass and I'm like "bruh don't stare" but it's tough at times. There was this probably 18 y/o related to some buddies wife eyeing me from time to time. I did nothing. Racers don't need girlfriends(TM).

>>
>>17201435
Alri lads, this paycheck's going for my motorbike driving license. I have 2000 euros to spend for a motorcycle

I live in Croatia, so strong sports bikes are not really viable. I live in a cramped town where you can't reach third gear while driving a car, considering how many traffic lights there are. It's the definition of "city traffic"
Also, the infrastructure is not stellar, the streets are proper Mediterranean, so a lot of one directions, narrow streets and such...

I was thinking something in the lines of Aprilia RS125. Is it good? I'll ride anything that isn't a fucking scooter, no matter if it's a T-max or a Burgman. Scooters are not my thing

Bottom line:
- up to 600cc (ideally 250cc, or even 125cc)
- The above leading to lower fuel consumption
- Not a tank-bike (but not a small one either since I'm 6'1), since if you want to park a car and go downtown, you need to park in the periphery and walk 10 minutes to reach the fucking old town
>>
>>17202538
RS125 IS NOT FOR COMMUTING

High maintenance, uncomfortable race replica and very fuel-thirsty two stroke. Definitely not what you're looking for.

Do they have the whole A1/A2/A license bullshit in Croatia?

You can buy any middle weight naked bike (FZ6, Z800, CB500F...) and restrict it, although expect to pay about 400-500€ to get it restricted (parts + labour + paperwork).

You could also get any bike below the A2 threshold (ninja 300, XT660, CBF250, CB250) and have fun with it. Some smaller bikes are a lot of fun.

If you have only A1, get the japanese 125 you like the most, it doesn't really matter as long as it's in good shape.

>Honestly, a KLR650
I'm not interested much in speed but agility and easiness to manage/cheap parts. Living here is a still a suffering when you're a bike owner (unless you own a Vespa).
And the aforementioned also doesn't allow me to drive the KLR, or what I wanted, the KLE, since I can only get the A2 license
Can't find a KLR beneath the golden 35kW, and I asked about these particular bikes in my local PD. They said I need an A license

Blockades are expensive, and the following checks and registration bring the cost up to 600 euros (don't laugh, it's a lot here, on top of buying a used bike)

Serious question here as I saw a post on another forum about a guy wanting to buy an HD Street 500 because of some kind of "L" license or some shit in Britain.

Do you get pulled over enough that this is a problem at all? Half of the things rode around here don't have valid plates nor do a good deal of the riders even have a motorcycle license. In my small circle I can think of a handful of bikes that have expired plates on them. Can you not just ride whatever? The police here in western Canada stop maybe 1 out of 10,000 bikes if that and that's if the bike is dumb enough to stop for them given the RC's have a strict no chase policy for two wheelers.

What about the Ninja 250? One guy wanted to sell me a 2008. Ninja 250 with 26 thousand kilometers for 2700 euros. Is that reasonable?

Also, the importing/exporting regulations bumped to EU levels so they've effectively discouraged importing used vehicles. Expect to pay additional 2000 euros on tonnage, emission and "age" parameters while buying a 4500 euro diesel vehicle. For fuck sake

So if I was to buy a 1500 euros bike in Germany, importing and registering it here would cost me additional 700 euros. This discouragement allow the local "used vehicles" mob to up their prices, so everyone is looking to skin everyone. Unless you can afford to go to a car salon and buy a brand new one

Do they chase bikes there or something? Here it's considered excessive force to initiate a chase with a bike as the bike can lose control very easily. If they don't chase what's to stop you from putting your insured plate in your garage throwing on a plate from a scrapped bike so they can't snag your address if they run it?

Give em a pip pip cheerio and go WOT.

To avoid glass from lights/mirrors being all over the track when you crash. Some organizers require you to do it. Some sanctioned races also require your race fairings to have a belly-pan integrated into the fairings to catch oil if it leaks, but that's racing regulations which is something else.

These organizers in particular don't require taping, but some guys tape it anyway. Some go full-on racer fuccboi and remove the mirrors and plate. I tape my mirrors and speedo so as to not look.

The Ninja 250 is pretty neat, although that one is expensive for the Spanish market... but maybe Croatia is different. See if you can find some other Ninja 250s around the country for comparison. The Ninja is kinda expensive, naked 250s are usually cheaper, although they don't have the sportsbike look/factor. The CB250 is usually plentiful, very comfy and lots of fun to ride. If you can find one well taken care of it's usually a good buy.

I'll check out this website, but as you said, these might not be available on our market. Some of the bikes you're mentioning here are completely alien to me. I've never seen a post 80es CB500 here. People used to drive the '79 one back in the day but that's it. The most "representative" Croatian choice for a naked bike is the Kawasaki ER5 or Honda CB600F

>>

Not worth it. Get a 600 or a 650. It's the things other than the power that'll kill you like the really good brakes and the commited riding position that makes it easy to target fixate and get scared.

That exhaust looks like it has seen better days but the bike overall looks okay. That CB500 can probably still go until you get tired of it and then some. That bike here wouldn't sell for more than 1500€, Croatian prices seem horrifying.

You can always:

Memorize this whole thing and try to check the bike as thoroughly as you can: http://www.clarity.net/adam/buying-bike.html
Ask the owner maintenance history (when was the oil, tires, filters, pads last changed)

If some consumables are worn or need replacing that's usually easy to do it yourself. If the bikes has other problems (bent forks/bars, too much crash damage, rust all over the place, oil leaks) then you're looking at more complicated fixes.

I think out of the big magazines and review sites the "shootouts" tend to be the best reviews and the most honest since the reviewers usually won't say blatantly negative things that piss off manufacturers in any reviews, but here at least you can figure out where the bikes stack up against each other, and read between the lines to figure out what's best for you.

This one looks solid. The KLR (which they've told me I can't drive with A2 but I see this one has 29kW lmao) says "OK condition"...
The XT600 (the second ad you posted) says it requires an A license beneath. They don't add that for no apparent reason, but it's not over 35kW. Did he by any chance mod it or something? I wouldn't want to buy a motorbike and have it restricted because it goes one kW above my license (which will cost the same as if I restricted a 60kW bike to the required 35kW. It's absurd)

What's more absurd, is that I could find an old beast of a motorcycle. Not over 70kW (so I can restrict it), and it will be cheaper than the ones for my category. But add the restricting and registration cost and you're evening out

If only I knew a guy who knew a guy

No everyone knows it's best to ride a bike that you can do your entire trip in one gear because shifting is a super hard expert technique reserved for professional racers that new riders shouldn't learn.

If you can't do an entire track day in 3rd gear you have to buy a more powerful bike.

I have an Aprilia RS125 two stroke from 2004.
My two cents: It's aesthetic as fuck, great to drive, love the two stroke sound, decent acceleration, not unreliable at all and not too difficult to work on. However, every 15k km they recommend reworking cilinder walls and changing piston. Won't be very expensive, but costs you a day to do.
I love it. The only reason you are goign to be driving 1:18 instead of anything more fuel efficient is because you are going to be driving aggresively and it's a thirsty rotax.

At least I know why I see "Normal Machine" in listings all the time, since that means stock cuck bike. (hilarious seeing Japanese being typical and going "oh but modifying this bike to full export performance could hurt its reliability!) Also finally figured out why there's practically no banana seats, they discontinued the F4i there instead.

You should ride WOT and then inspect the spark plug.

After selecting main jet you start working with partial (like 2/3 or 3/4) throttle opening and you play with jet-needle (selecting different needle profile or changing its height).

Then you proceed to pilot jet.

90% of frame slider are pure shit and you are very-very likely will end with frame/engine mount damage in event of crash (if you go over 50-60km/h).

Hey guys, idk if anybody remembers me, but i'm the guy who recently bought an '83 CB450SC for $560.

I've been looking over the bike and putting together a checklist of things that I want to replace.

I'm having some trouble figuring out this coil thing. On a car, spark plug wires + boots come attached, and you just hook it up to the distributor.

On my bike it seems like the wires are directly attached to the coil.

I found pic related online, which is what my coil looks like, but the majority of coils online look nothing like that pic.

is this design obsolete or something?

closest i could find was (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dual-Lead-Wire-12-volt-Ignition-Coil-Honda-CB400-CB-400-82-86-CB450-CB-450-SC-/332180522744?hash=item4d578086f8:g:iXUAAOSwB-1Y7R2U&vxp=mtr) but I don't see that it comes with spark plug boots.

forgive my ignorance. i do want to learn.

what do

There are reasons and they aren't unoversal. Big bikes are bad for new riders because they normally lack some combination of self control, bravery/balls, and the desire to get better. A 250/300 is better for a learner because the bike itself will ease you into going faster and faster, and be light enough to not instill that "is this thing going to fucking fall over oh my god how the fuck do bikes stay upright shit shit shit" feeling. If it's a liter with traction control and rider modes, fuck man you're good, have fun and progress cautiously and reasonably and you're probably going to get better, safer, and faster, faster than some idiot trying the "flog yer two fiddy and you'll be rossi in no time" thing.

You can start on a ZX10, VFR800, CBR/GSXR1k, anything, and learn to be a good and safe rider if you are the right kind of person to do it.

On the other hand, with a bigger bike you are paying a huge fucking premium on insurance, tires, chains, and gas consumption for more bike than you will use for the next five+ years assuming you just started riding. That shit adds up fast, especially tires. Not only does everything cost almost twice as much, the extra power and weight wears it down twice as fast.

If you have proven yourself to be a naturally competent and mature rider in SOMEONE ELSE'S opinion, then you should save yourself the financial ruin and start on a midsize bike that's popular at track days like an EX500, CB400SF if they're available to you, etc.

They made emissions so strict that honda couldn't make it saleable there without killing their already small profit margin on a shrinking market.

What is not shrinking is 1000cc supersport insurance rates and the raw fact that they're just too fucking much, when first gear will exceed every single speed limit on the planet in less than three seconds and second gear will get you into moderate trouble on any given day on the autobahn.

750-800cc is the perfect size for streetable I4/V4 sportbikes. They're not insane, but they're not so small that low end torque is negligible. They do go fast, but it's a very controllable fast even for a shit rider.

Yet the free market is for dick measuring

Has anybody here ever had a catastrophic mechanical failure while riding? What was that like?
>>
>>17205552
Sort of, wasn't way serious
>xr600
>Slowing to a stop from highway speeds
>engine died
>put it in second to bump start before stop
>Rolled the throttle to give a little to stay running
>Throttle got stuck open
>fly backwards
>busted back fairing and bent kickstart a little
All in all it could have been much worse.
Thank god for ATGATT

600s having no torks is mostly a matter of them being tuned for racing, so you have to get maximum top end out of limited displacement. Those gutted JDM F4is have noticeably more bottom end than the full hoon US ones or Europe F Sports even.

The easy way is to go for a 750 triple or something for the same power level but it's possible to make pretty tractable sub-750 inline 4s.

I'm too stupid to live, so yeah.
There were other factors I don't want to say cause you's guys would give me a bunch of shit for it.
>>

>600s having no torks
I always see this but my 600 doesn't feel gutless on the low end and is perfectly rideable. It does get a surge of power at 9k but below that is more than enough for regular driving

>>17205654
Yeah but remember shifting is for teenagers, think of all those other important things your left foot needs to do.

I wanted to do a stroker crank and ACT wide ratio gears but don't have the money right now, so yeah just BBK and new valves and cams.

>>17204507
SLAB to AZBDR, then that most of the way to Moab. MT21's, should have had a D606 on the rear for all that pavement but meh

I have never done valve clearances before, and I'm going to do them on my KLR250.
I've watched a few videos, go feeler gauges and a new gasket. Anything else I should know? Any other tools I might need?
The only thing I'm worried about it torquing the bolt properly, as I don't have a torque wrench or the specs.

Bike newfag here, looking to get a bike in the 2-5 thousand dollar range but don't know jack shit. Like both crotchrockets and BRBRBRBRBR bikes

Any recommendations, advice on gear or shit like that?

get a torque wrench and a service manual.
both are things you should have for wrenching anyways.

I mean, I have a brembo master cylinder on my bike, but I believe it's 16mm piston. RCS is 19.

I tried looking for the service manual, but apparently they only made one for the KLR600, and some sort of add on for the 250.
I couldn't find a .pdf of it, just the owners manual which had things like oil filter type, valve clearances, etc.

Larger master cylinder means LESS mechanical advantage. Bigger isn't always better.

>>17205803
Are new KTM brembos good? Because the Brembo master cylinders KTM used on their old bikes fucking sucked.

piston ring broke while riding. The engine didn't seize. I just lost all power and pulled off to the side of the road.
>>
>>17205654
I thought this too until I rode a 1000cc vtwin, then my 600 i4 felt like dogshit

Just again rode my friends cbr 600 and it felt so slow when getting on the throttle in comparison, it's like night and day.

>>17205870
The brakes on my 701 are great. They're not quite supersport brakes, but I only have one front rotor.
>>
>>17205870
But doesn't larger piston=more braking force applied with less lever pressure? Otherwise why the hell would people purchase the brembo master cylinder in the first place?
>>
>>17205892
A wider piston = less lever travel but more force to operate

A narrower piston = longer travel and less force required to operate
>>
>>17205892
no, larger MC piston means more volume (20lbs of force across 19mm face) with less pressure, it means it can move more piston volume in the calipers.
smaller MC will give lower volume but with higher pressure (20lbs across 15mm) but wont move as much fluid so multiple calipers/ multipot calipers may need more volume to work right
>>
>>17205892
>But doesn't larger piston=more braking force applied with less lever pressure?
No. A smaller master cylinder/piston actually achieves a greater braking force with the same squeezing force. Increasing the size of the caliper pistons has the same effect. The side effect is you have to increase the lever travel when you decrease the required lever force. It's the same amount of "work" either way, but one way is a hard squeeze over a short distance and the other is an easy squeeze over a comparatively long distance.

It's important for a braking system to have well-matched calipers and master cylinder. A fuckheug master cylinder might work great on a certain dual 6-piston caliper setup but putting it on a single 2-piston caliper bike won't give improved braking as you might expect.

> Otherwise why the hell would people purchase the brembo master cylinder in the first place?
People will buy into big name brands no matter what. They probably have some higher quality parts than a lot of OEMs. Maybe less deadzone on the lever or improved "feel."

So there's literally no reason for me to invest in this fuckin thing? Why do all these turbo autists on forums suggest using this thing then?

I can understand the use for them on larger 6 piston calipers, but if I have old sumitomo 4 piston calipers from an old gen R1 then I'm basically wasting money?

Should I just stick with my stock MC and get braided lines then?

hey guys, need a little trouble shooting help

97 zx6

pump is getting no voltage. The gravity fed pump allows the bike to run and idle, but when the electric fuel pump needs to supply fuel to the main jets, it doesnt kick on.
I know the pump works after giving it 12v dc from the battery.
Ive chased the wires, none seem damaged
the positive wire has 12v to it, but it seems its not getting grounded. the ground leads to a relay. I have no idea how to test it as there are no diagrams and all the poles are the same size.

Any ideas?

Also, my bike has some sort of sensor on the kick stand, im not sure what it does.
the bike will start with the kick stand down, but could that have anything to do with the electric fuel pump kicking on?

Been trying to figure this shit out for like 3 days, i wanna get back to riding but im damn near retarded with electrical.
