I only have a bike, it's not too bad. Not much more expensive to only have a car, but a bike is way faster and more fun.

Scooters are made for women and guys with DUIs, don't get one of those.
>>
>>17206249
Is it really as expensive as a car? I heard the bike itself is cheaper and the gas costs less. I don't want something fast or super tryhard/edgy, I just want a relatively cheap way to get around town.

i was you a few months ago, maybe the results of my fumbling around, asking questions, watching videos, etc will be of some small use. most of this concerns america and sportbikes (or at least on-road bikes).

start with a 250-300cc if you
>are under 20-22
>have self control issues
>ride around town/twisties a lot (not freeway)

start with a 650cc if you
>are older than 22-24
>are reasonably disciplined
>ride on freeway a lot

>450-500cc bikes are a meme that exist because of Euro tiered licensing - they're heavier than 300s but not as powerful as 650s; just get one of those instead
>600cc bikes (supersports) do NOT fall linearly in between 500cc and 650cc in terms of performance; they are generally MUCH more powerful than either. do not start on one unless you have significant dirt experience or are highly motivated/disciplined (protip most aren't)
>1000cc bikes: just don't
>similarly, start with 1-2 cylinders; 3-4 are for later

>less cyls = more torque, more cyls = more hp
>more hp = higher top speed; more torque = faster acceleration (ROUGHLY)
>inline engines scream, v engines burble
>japanese bikes are most reliable, followed by us/brit bikes, followed by italian/german bikes. don't buy chinese.
>abs is worth it (inb4 kkk calling me a numale)
>fuel injected is lower maintenance than carbureted
>liquid cooled works better than air cooled when you're stuck in traffic, in a hot climate and in a state that doesn't allow lane splitting (ie not cali)
>lane splitting (at least when the drivers expect it) is safer than the alternative
>things to check when buying used: http://www.clarity.net/adam/buying-bike.html
>don't get sucked into the yammienoob black hole on youtube

>pic: sheet comparing (mostly sport) bikes i heard recommended for starting + bikes i saw frequently on my craigslist, sorted by horsepower and annotated according to my own preferences

there's plenty to learn abt standard/cruiser/adv/sumo bikes too

how many memes did i swallow, dbt?

hey guys, need a little trouble shooting help

97 zx6

pump is getting no voltage. The gravity fed pump allows the bike to run and idle, but when the electric fuel pump needs to supply fuel to the main jets, it doesnt kick on.
I know the pump works after giving it 12v dc from the battery.
Ive chased the wires, none seem damaged
the positive wire has 12v to it, but it seems its not getting grounded. the ground leads to a relay. I have no idea how to test it as there are no diagrams and all the poles are the same size.

Any ideas?

Also, my bike has some sort of sensor on the kick stand, im not sure what it does.
the bike will start with the kick stand down, but could that have anything to do with the electric fuel pump kicking on?

Been trying to figure this shit out for like 3 days, i wanna get back to riding but im damn near retarded with electrical.
>>
>>17206257
No, I said it's cheaper. Just not a lot cheaper.

All the maintenance needs to be preventative instead of responsive and fuel economy isn't as good as you'd think unless you have a newish 250 with fuel injection.

It's definitely cheaper, just not earth shatteringly cheaper. And you have to deal with the weather and can't move as much shit. I'd give it a try, if you don't like it, sell it and go for the car.

I personally love it and hate driving cars now. Probably save about $1500/yr, mostly in insurance over diving my car which I should probably just sell instead of using up room in my driveway.
>>
>>17206308
$1500 is a lot of money when you make min wage in one of the most expensive cities in the US, so I think I'll give it a try. Thanks for the info, anon!

>450-500cc bikes are a meme that exist because of Euro tiered licensing
Not really. Some of them are really low revving for the purposes of fitting that bracket is all.

650s are for if you absolutely insist on your your first bike being the only bike you'll ever need. Mind you 300s are like 99% capable on roads anyways.

I've been riding the same motorcycle since high school (i'm 25 now) and I want to get something new. I'll probably get a honda cb300f or something similar. I'll probably have to lease it or take out a loan, which is ok with me, but I'll be paying for it for a little while. The problem, though, is that I plan on moving to Japan in a few years to teach. I want to have a motorcycle with me when I'm there and I'm wondering what the best way to go about this would be.

Should I get a new motorcycle now and have it shipped over to Japan when I move? I know that's going to be really expensive. Would I be better off getting a motorcycle, selling it when I'm about to move, then getting another when I get to Japan? Are neither of these economically viable and should I just tough it out on my crappy motorcycle for the next 3 years?
>>
>>17206422
Ride the shitbike till you get to Japan. Then you can get a decent 250cc when you are there.
>>
>>17206422
I would personally go for buying one there. Seems like a way easier way to do it than deal with shipping it over on a boat. Isn't a cb300 like 6k.

You are telling me you are gonna take a loan out for 6k instead of just saving up some money for a year or two?
>>
>>17206422

>>
>>17206435
I think they're closer to $4000 new

And that's the thing, I really want a new motorcycle now. There's a few things wrong with my motorcycle (I had it in the shop for almost a year and it's still not running great) and it's not fast enough to leave town with, so I'm kind of impatient and want to be on something I can actually leave town on and not have to worry about it breaking down on me when I'm just going to work and back.

The amount of time I have left in the states is just kind of awkward. It's feels too long for me to wait to get a new bike, but it also doesn't feel like long enough to get a new one now
>>
>>17206193
Pretty decent bike for that price. You did not overpay.

As for the size and power, unless you are completely inept you'll do fine on it, and won't outgrow it for a while
>>
>>17206422
Shipping over is only worth it if you want to bring something not sold there. So not a CB300F.

It's up to you whether you want a new bike for 3 years or not. That's actually plenty of time if you aren't going to be poor as fuck for the foreseeable future such that one or two thousand dollars over three years fucks you.
>>
>>17206462
Craigslist. I juat don't have it in me to buy a brand new 300 when you could find one for so much cheaper. But I have had good luck. bike I bought only had 250 miles. So It was pretty much new but I didn't have to pay dealer price for it.

Could always sell.yours find something a little bigger and then sell that again when you move. 4k loan for a small bike sounds stupid as fuck to me. 4k isn't all that much money you should be able to save that up pretty easy.
>>
>>17206422
What are you riding now that a cb300 is considered an upgrade?
>>

>craigslist
Not many good things get posted in my area, and I'm worried I'll end up buying something that ends up having issues and defeats the purpose of me getting a new bike

A friend of mine works at a bike shop so I'm hoping he might be able to get me something at a decent price

Good ideas though

2005 Yamaha xt225
>>
>>17206305
The kickstand sensor is probably already bypassed since the bike starts with the kickstand down. I highly doubt this is causing it.

The relay should be easy to test if you google how to test relays. If the fuel pump is working than it definitely sounds like the relay might be fucked. You can do it anon, I believe in you.
>>
>>17206521
I'd honestly rather have the xt225

Money well spent, you might lose $500 on the bikes value by doing 10,000-20,000km on one (assuming 2nd hand bikes of course) where the same kilometers on a cb300 will drop the value by over $1000.

Plus, near on double the horsepower of a cb300f and if money is really an issue just buy an nc39 instead of an nc42.

depends where you live, 95% of bites you have about 3 hours before your organs want to start failing
5% of bites (mainly from brown snakes), if you dont receive treatment within half an hour you are going to die. sometimes in as little as 5 minutes...
>>
>>17206771
snakes are legitimately the most dangerous thing in australia, eastern brown snake, western brown snake, coastal taipan, king brown snake, eastern brown snake, tiger snake, death adder, red bellied black snake and lowlands copperhead can all kill you in less than an hour if they bite you on the foot, if they get you close to the neck/heart you are fucked in like half an hour without antivenom

ive always wondered why australian snakes are so venomous. are kangaroos and wombats that much of a threat?
>>
>>17206790
i think the main people that get bitten by them are tourists that don't have many snakes in their own country really
>>
>>17206792
The better question is why aren't other snakes more venomous? Is being venomous detrimental in some way?
>>
>>17206792
less food available so killing prey quick became needed, that as well as genetic rivalry between certain species, like some australian rodents can withstand more venom than it would take to kill a fully grown man and hardly be effected, same goes for the snake genetics some of the snakes eat other snakes so their venom evolved to fight eachother and their dna evolved to make them more resistant to other venoms and other darwin type shit.

Interesting shit if you really want to research it.

New rider here. Is it ok to let go of the clutch while you're riding and also not giving throttle?

I thought that since if you let the clutch go without giving it gas in first gear, you'll stall the hike, that you'd fuck up the bike doing the same in higher gears, but I see people riding without their hands on the clutch or the throttle all the time

>>17207070
if you let off the clutch without giving throttle from a dead stop, you will either stall very quickly, or roll very slowly for a short distance before stalling. if you are moving at a respectable rate, and let off the throttle and clutch, you will do what is called "engine breaking"
it doesnt hurt the bike if done reasonably, but you will be slowing down. that being said, a few cruisers have cruise control, and will still apply throttle hands free

they divide it up by age, the 6-11 year olds have a class, the 12-15 year olds have a class, then 16+ has a class.
then practicing on my own is hard for a few reasons
1: for how indestructible everyone says a klr 650 its surprisingly fragile. one looped wheelie in the back yard and i had a crack in the cowling, and ripped off the radiator shroud ($125-150 in damages)
i've only got one mirror, and its after market, because both mine shattered on another ride
i need a new skidplate because that took nothing to break
and the electrical system has been going wrong lately too, especially if there is any amount of water around. i feel like i might as well be riding an unmaintianed ducati with how often i need to buy new parts or wind up walking

i hit post too soon
2: the nearest places to ride off road are 4 hours away on the far side of the state, and i have a lot of respect for people who tour on klr 650s because 5 hours on that seat is all i can take at a time. if i go more than 2-3 hours i cant feel my ass, only a horrible swamp between my legs, and its even worse on the freeway because the aerodynamics pull my knees away from the bike, and keeping my legs closed is super uncomfortable and tiring, but keeping them out is even more annoying
>>17207132
i feel like that will make the 4 hour ride on the freeway even worse, plus then i still have to worry about mirrors and blinkers snapping off or shattering

>>

>>
>>17207153
im really thinking about it, but i dont want to give up my dream. i definately dont want to give up this cushy suspension. there's these one spot of railroad tracks that are super uneven and they are about 2 feet higher than the road, harleys usually have to walk their bikes over so the frame doesnt scratch, but i can fly over them at 50 mph, catch some air, and be confident doing it. im kinda thinking about getting a v-strom 650 or a versys 650 to keep some suspension and potential should i find that long-lost fire road, but much more street comfort for my 99% of riding

If you have to take a 4 hour freeway ride to get to dirt roads, then you're basically fucked, a KLR is the best compromise you can have. If you want to get serious about dirt riding, try to find trails nearby, buy a truck to transport a real dirt bike, or give up on the idea altogether and just ride street.

Don't listen to that nobike who doesn't sound like he could even change his oil. For $500 you're doing fine if the title is clean. Mite be a 1927-ish Raleigh. Obviously this one's missing some of the kajiggers attached in the headlight location in your photo, but the front fender, front fork, engine details, suicide shifter and luggage rack geometry match pretty well.

Took one out for a test ride and reviewed it for my YouToob channel. I'm not one for cruisers but it's not bad, really comfy and could be made pretty cool with some mods to personalise it. If you're somebody who wants one of the 500 range but isn't after mad speed and a bit of comfort, it's pretty good. Ergos are more bobber/sportster than cruiser.

Quite vibey at highway speeds though, and the low pegs made me a bit nervous in the twisties, but they never caused any problems.

Hello dbt, I need your help. I have to do front end work on my bike and I need to find a way to suspend it since I'm taking off the forks and the steering stem.

My idea is to hang it from the frame sliders on this ladder above it.

The ladder feels flimsy as fuck but I use it all the time and it supports my 200 pound ass while climbing it no problem so it should work

Any glaring flaws here I should be prepared for?
>>
>>17207814
The ladder acting like a pendulum and falling over.
>>
>>17207813
buy it used
>>
>>17207817
The back of the bike is supported by a stand so it can't really move laterally.

The main thing I want to do is to be able to suspend the front end high enough so I can slide out the forks+wheel assembly as one solid piece since I don't really feel like taking off the wheel. But that sounds a little lazy now that I read it.

>>17207813

ladder should have a weight rating sticker somewhere on it, try for at least half the weight of your bike. If you do this throw a carpet/blanket/towels over your tank and bodywork to keep them from getting jacked up. The bike will jump when you get it lifted off the sidestand, go slow and try to balance it off the stand while raising to to prevent this. Does your shop have a accessible and strong ceiling beam? Might be better off using that instead of a ladder

Guys how is your self control when you put on that helmet?

I've been riding for, coming on a year. Ride a f650st so im not really fast but still faster then 90% of the cars. Im usually a mellow guy but lately I find myself having no patience in traffic when I put on that helmet. This leads to me weaving trough traffic on the highways but also in town. I know this is really dangerous but sometimes my self control is just really lacking. How do you guys deal with this? Is it just me that turns into an asshole when I put on that helmet?

Always better to run rich than lean. Are you only playing with the pilot jet? You can always go to a local bike mechanic for opinions on sizing. Your carb should have an air/fuel screw on it somewhere that may need to be adjusted too

I'm almost positive that your needle jet is what controls the fuel during opening and closing of the throttle so you might want to replace that and see how your bike acts with your current set up. dont ride above your skill level. if you're not 100% sure you can do it safely, you can not do it at all. riding is unforgiving, and riding conservatively gives you a small buffer zone when things go wrong. case and point

Could be. Never thought about it, I know the end-drive has oil that needs replacing, never did anything to the drive shaft itself, as the shop removed everything before I could even say I wanted to do it.

I need a new final form helmet, and there are so many options out there I don't really know where to start.

I'm willing to spend just about any amount of money ($500-800 preferred, will spend more if it's the perfect helmet) to get that one helmet that will do everything I want to do while being comfy, and lasting for years and years (unless I actually put it to the test).

Right now I've got a cheap adv helmet that I bought for dual sport riding. I'll probably keep it just as a beater for when I'm doing heavy off road riding.

>Touring on my touring bike.
>Track riding on my sport bike.
>Occasional commuting and off road use on my dual sport.

What I'd like to get out of it is

>Low wind noise (plan on using radio comms with an earpiece / throat mic / baofeng)
>Excellent venting (live where summer temps get upwards of 110f
>Low buffeting / jerking head around at high speed
>Comfy enough for all day use
>Removable pads / liner for cleaning
>Decent selection of shields, or if not a built in sun visor like my cheap BILT.
>White, "metallic" shades of grey, or white base with red / blue accent preferred.
>Bonus points for looking like a space helmet
>No matte finishes

Suggestions?

I can't open that link for some reason because I'm on my phone right now. Ignition systems are black magic, but I know a bit about them.

That coil in pic related looks like a capacitive coil to me. In general, cars will have inductive coils, so that may explain some of the difference. If you have a multimeter that measures resistances you can possibly confirm its capacitive.

As >>17204743 says, coils are pretty interchangeable. The only problem is capacitive/inductive, as they are charged in different ways. Inductive coils charge one of the coils inside, then when the power to that coil is cut off, a current is induced in a second coil that is attached to the plug wire. Capacitive systems charge a capacitor that is then discharged to fire the plug.

If your bike is a capacitive system, you may be able to find a little box attached to the power wires for the coil that is the capacitor, bit some are just in the ECU if it's EFI.

Capacitive systems are usually used in motorcycles and other high rpm applications like 2 stroke snowmobiles because the charge time is a lot lower than inductive. If the rpm is too high for the charge time, you might not get a good spark, and the coil will heat up too much from a too high charging duty cycle.

The reason cars will normally use inductive systems is that an inductive system has a longer spark duration. It's strange to think about the spark lasting longer or shorter, but it makes a difference. You'll get better combustion with a longer spark duration. Some new cars are choosing to go with capacitive systems with multispark, or firing the plug multiple times every power stroke.

tl;dr
You should be fine with a similar coil, as long as it matches the variety your bike had stock.

go on craigslist, post an advertisement for it, be totally honest about everything that's still good on it and everything that is broken, list it for ~1650, come down to 1500 or 1450, take a loan out on it for the other 2500-3200 i need to buy a used versys 650 or vstrom 650, buy that, pay off that small loan, and have a bike that hasnt been dropped a lot and abused by a learner (and that will be better for longer rides on freeway + more street oriented)

Got on the brakes too hard leaned over while transitioning between this wide turn to this very tight turn.

Clipons, mirrors, turn signals, front cowl support and some other stuff got all shrekt. Some places where the fairings go attached to the frame required some hammering, but nothing too bad. I think it was about 200€ on eBay to get it all sorted.

I'm starting to think that really small bikes, like 200cc, aren't great starter bikes like we've all told ourselves.

Sure, they're really easy to learn on. Yes, they're lighter and more forgiving, making it easier to recover if you fuck up.

On the other hand, they're so easy to ride that as soon as a new rider gets comfortable with the fundamentals it's too easy to get overconfident.

That's weird, must be something wrong with it. Probably that bent triple tree, or maybe a wheel problem.

With my current sprockets I can cruise my XR at 80mph no problem, and it's stable up to over 100mph but the RPM gets a little too high for me to be comfortable without a tach.

Fix it up, sell it, and buy something better suited to your tastes anon. Just don't take out a loan.

Is this correct? http://zx6r.com/service-manuals/12588-1995-1997-kawasaki-zx-6r-service-manual.html

The download link is good.

Relay is an oddball shape so check on the forums to see if anyone has replaced it with a common Bosch style relay.

You can map the relay socket noting power and ground and if any aren't used by comparing to the schematic even though the relay isn't marked.

I'd just open the fucker and know for sure then keep it for troubleshooting.

You can usually pop the cover off most relays with a sharp pocket knife then use that relay to see if it's getting power to operate. I don't know about that one but if it were mine I'd open the fucker and get a replacement to eliminate the relay since you know the pump works. You can also manually actuate most relays with the cover removed by pushing it with something non-conductive. Relays are cheap and having a test relay in your stash is useful. Don't forget to double check your fuses, and check fuse block for corrosion where fuses plug in.

There are lots of fuel pump threads for the Googling:
