I'm trying to build a prerunner out of my Titan. It's a real budget build but I just got a new jerb so it's gonna get better.

I'd like to get into doing trails and going on expeditions but I still need to upgrade the wife to a 4Runner or Wrangler. My Titan isn't really an "overlander"

I want to end up with a mid travel prerunner so as to avoid a massive track width and too much fender chopping. It's still my DD/work truck and it's on a pretty hard budget.
I'd love to buy a preassembled kit like what Dirt King offers but I may just piece it together one part at a time. ie UCAs, LCAs.
I also want to end up with some Fox coilovers, no more than a 2" lift. I love having a low truck with a good center of balance with meaty tires. Living in central California, every other truck is either lifted on massive wheels and tiny tires or slammed with massive wheels and tiny tires.
I'm a welder/fabricator now, so I'm planning on building rock sliders and new bumpers for myself and others to help fund my build.

There was an $800 J55 on Kijiji in Eliot Lake, Ontario a few months ago. I know a bunch of LC people who called the guy wanting to buy it but none of them wanted to ship it. I own a Jeep for rocks and slow trails.

That being said, I inspected it a couple hours ago, I'm already maxing the stock uppers, and the lower balls don't have far to go. I'm not sure what to do about the lowers, but I can get kits for the uppers easily. And I do have to drop the dif to go lower.

The thing is, should I focus more on compression? Or is more droop better to do first? I can go pretty damn far up with just some fiberglass fenders and a bump stop adjustment.

What type of trails are you hitting? I can hit dirt trails and fire roads doing 60+ with minimal modification and effort. Those are mainly gravel and loose dirt.
The type of trails and surfaces you want to hit, can help you determine what to focus on.

Personally, I wouldn't even worry about downtravel unless I'm running some hardcore whoops that would otherwise cook lesser shocks.
Down travel is for more extreme and faster offroading in my opinion. Uptravel is much more functional for everyday driving and less intense dirt time.

anyone have experience with the Kumho Road Venture AT51? this WJ I just picked up has a pretty new set of them. they look an awful lot like the Falken Wildpeak to me in that the majority of the siping will be gone in 5000 miles and then they'll be worthless in anything wet. but I wasn't planning on lifting this one until next winter so I'm wondering if I should be looking into a stock size replacement before then and unloading these things.

After I posted that it got me thinking and I really want to go out on some trips to the really big offroading places. Like Moab, Ouray, stuff like that. I've only been to Rausch Creek (in PA) a couple times and I'm usually just puttering around in the Pinelands, but I really want to get out and do some cool and scenic stuff.
How would you guys go about doing this? Would you just drive out there (basically cross country) in your rig? Rent a truck and tow it? Or ship it (which I know is hella expensive)?
I guess renting a truck or Jeep to use once I'm wherever I end up going is an option too, but I'd MUCH rather use my own (I mean, that's the whole point isn't it?)

Ouray is only 6 hours for me, so I drive my guy there. It's my daily driver anyway, so no big whoop. I see a lot of serious dudes trailering their jeeps (you can rent a trailer from Uhaul/Penske).

As you said, you could rent a Jeep... But I think I'd rather rent a trailer and drag that fucker to the trail so I could drive MY vehicle. Many of the jeep rental places restrict certain trails (Black Bear Pass in Ouray/Telluride for example).

last I checked the Jeep rentals in Ouray had more trails restricted than not and I've heard they've even started posting employees in various parts of trails trying to catch people breaking rules in their rentals. totally not worth renting one IMO. my sister lives in Montrose and I think once my WJ is done I may just store it at her house because I'd rather go out there and run trails that aren't nearly as crowded as anything in the front range.

What's life like in Ouray?

I always pictured a sleepy mining town nestled deep in the mountains. The impression I get with these posts is the area is more like a theme park overcrowded by Jeeps and other tourists.

If so I'm sad. I'd love it to be like your pictures where it seems like you're the only one on Earth, not full of tourists in rented Jeeps and idiots in side-by-sides practicing piss poor trail etiquette.

There's bunch of Sand Dunes up North of me I love traveling to, but nowadays it's soo overcrowded it's hardly worth going to anymore. Please tell me Ouray is not the same!

I've been twice during peak season, but always during the week (avoiding weekend tourists). Once was early July, the week before the FJ summit. Once was mid August.

The town of Ouray itself is packed. In fact, if you dont get a hotel months in advance, you'll be staying in Montrose or Durango (45 mins to 1 hour away). I booked our room for July this year about 3 months ago. Got one of the last rooms available at our hotel.

The trails, however, aren't too bad. They are so numerous that you only see another vehicle (usually ATVs) every 5-10 minutes at worst. In general folks are respectful of the trails and each other. A few spots, like Animas Forks, are good hubs for a few trails, so they can be a bit crowded (maybe 10-15 cars). But on the trails proper it's not bad, you can go an hour without seeing another person on the less popular trails. The worst are the Jeep tours with 10 pudgy whitebreads strapped in a Jeep modified to carry their fat wrinkly asses. But they're rare.

In pic related there is only one other vehicle at this summit. We didn't pass another person for 20 minutes after, and this is one of the most popular passes very near Animas Forks (kind of staging area).

We camped on the trail, there were no other campers there. We didn't see a soul from dusk to dawn. Pre-dusk a group of hikers passed after finishing Handies Peak. Same in the early a.m. as a new group began the ascent.

So, all in all, it's not as bad as you may expect.

Honestly dude, Toyos are expensive, but after my first set lasting 75K I was like holy shit, these tires are god-tier, memes aside. Thats why I bought my second set.

Now I'm on to the M/Ts and there hasnt been a bog or sand pit I havent been able to get out of. And they're by far the quietest M/Ts out of all my friends. (from coopers to generals to off brand re-treads). Also, I have about 20k on my M/Ts and they still look practically brand new (they are siped though, and I dont crawl so no chunking has occurred) . The bumper has six grade 8 bolts holding on to the frame. I have no doubts of it's ability to hold on. Since it's been mounted it's had zero shift.

It's got Bilstein 5100s on all 4 corners. It gives it about a 2" lift, but you can't reallytell until you see it next to a stock Titan. It's pretty conservative.

As time goes on I'll get some new UCAs, LCAs, and then finally go with some coilovers for a full MT setup.

I just ordered the A/T IIs for my WJ, 245/65R17s were $520 for a set which I don't think is bad at all. but I also just got the 22s in for my truck yesterday and I think I'm going to be spending $2100 for a 37x13.50R22 Toyo M/T. I've currently got 35x12.50R20 R/Ts on the truck and they have been awesome in every condition I've run them through. new tread was 19/32" and over 20k later they're measuring 13/32" and they're still silent. We did, but the trucks didn't. We went up there to camp and raft and just took some road that we found on the way out to see where it went.

I broke it apart as best I could by hand. The twigs and smaller branches were easy, just time consuming. I was able to move/break away the large trunks by yanking them with my tow straps. It took a couple of hours, but when you have no choice...

Just cover the vehicle with dirt and dust and no one will see shit. I washed the LC today after the waterpit after oberlanding and holy shit were the scratches bad.

The base of the tree was still buried in the ground and the tree had fallen against another off to the left in the picture. I threw the strap around the trunks in the middle between both points and gave it a good hard yank or two. Once the trunks snapped I was able to squeeze between the fallen tree and the other tree pictured on the left.

Lifting the tree out of the way would have been extremely difficult. In fact, I doubt I would have been able to lift it high enough to drive under.

That looks pretty neat! I've seen some of these with a built in jump starter pack as well. My dream would be on-board air. There's plenty of room underneath for a tank, I would have to wire in an air compressor though :-\

I live in NYC and want to go overlanding since I'm already used to camping and long distance traveling with very little money.

I'm mechanically competent and lets say I have a budget of 3 to 5 grand. (I'm guess Land Cruisers and similar vehicles probably wouldn't be in my budget)

I was already thinking about getting a regular cab short bed truck for moving my motorcycles to and from the track, as long as I kept a different set of wheels around, would I be fine using that along with a top?

My other idea was to get a two door removable top SUV (Bronco, Ramcharger, or Blazer) and just get larger tires. I wouldn't have to get a top since I could just get a summer top or insulate the existing one.

Any ideas or recommendations? I'm new to overlanding. I've always wanted to do it and I loved off-road stuff as a kid, but now that I'm 21 I can actually go and do it!

It's not too bad. Throgs neck to the cross island parkway and I'm there.

The bigger issue is I now live in Michigan. So the pain comes from the MI/OH/PA/NJ parts of the commute.

Will this truck be your sole vehicle? If so, you will have to think hard about the gear requirements and how it compares to maneuverability requirements in regards to city driving. Driving something huge can be a pain there... especially with low garage clearances...

I use my bike as my form of sole transportation. I used to have a couple of cars. but I sold them to get rid of some debts and what not.

Right now, all I have is my one motorcycle, so yeah I plan on it being my sole four wheeled vehicle, it'll be a daily once riding season is over.

I try my hardest to not park in garages, their pricing is absolutely ridiculous! Street parking is the best parking for a poorfag like me. Ain't nothing wrong with a little bit of bumper cars.

My current plan is for this truck to stay mostly stock. With the exception to necessary upgrades like bigger tires on different wheels for trips into the trail or for winter duty when the snow and ice really come down. I should be fine for city driving. It's not like I'm taking a jacked up up Montero on 32s wheeling over retail storefronts in Midtown! (Although now I kind of want to)
