Don't buy a bike you don't like.

That being said if the price is right you can buy it now for dirt cheap and promise everyone here at /dbt/ to not crash it.

Then, while you're saving up for a bike you really want you can ride your new Harley.

Then you can sell the Harley and buy the bike you want.

Pro tip: Make sure your plan to eventually sell it is known to your dad and uncle or whatever. You don't want them angry at you and you should keep it and at least pretend to love it so they don't think you're just flipping it.

I am conflicted.

I have been riding a Suzuki 250cc street bike for 2 years and feel very comfortable on it. A good family friend wants to sell his 2003 HD sportster 1200 and it's a great price, he takes good care of it and hardly ever rides(Harley owners right). Any ways its not really my style but I test rode it anyway. I was pleasantly surprised by it. The cruiser seating position was weird at first but I got use to it. It also seemed to have a good amount of get up and go for a cruiser that i was not expecting. The only thing that I didn't like was the hand/foot vibration also it's not very nimble. Also I am not sure if i want to be in the Harley cult. It's not really my style. I like V-stroms and upright standard bikes. But my dad said he would help out with the purchase and I could get it for next to nothing. What should I do?

I was gifted a cruiser. I hated it. If your heart's not in it, you're not going to enjoy it.

Are you tight for money? Will the guy be mad if you sell it again to someone else? If yes, and you dont actually want the bike that bad, then dont buy it.

>>
>>17164800
Besicly re-do the whole engine just to beat an r1. I would rather just buy another bike.
>>
>>17164813
How do you launch good on a 600? Getting from 0-30mph quickly is the hard part since it doesn't have much power in the really low RPMs. Do you kind of just drag the clutch to keep the engine spun up and still put down some power?
>>
>>17164808
Water is going to fuck everithing, just you wait.

The R1 is slow as shit man, that is a bad example. But yes, engine work to compete with a S1000RR or ZX10R (4th gen)

>>17164842

Well, it's obvious you guys do not closely follow the engine building and racing community, so why leave a dumb comment like that? The R1 is in the same category as the GSXR when it comes to engine power and potential, both of which are a caliber above the CBR1000RR which is currently the slowest. But none of these bikes compare to the S1000RR or the 4th generation ZX10Rs which are all making 190 horsepower at the wheel with nothing more than an ecu flash. Bikes like the R1 and the GSXR are both 20-30 horsepower behind and can't compete without engine work. So back to my original point, the GSXR with engine work is faster than the R1.

Given a little time with it, you might come to enjoy it more than you think. If you're not going to have much in it, what's wrong with having an extra bike in the selection?

All I ever owned was dirtbikes and dual sports, I had ridden a friends Harley around the neighborhood and anothers Street Triple around the block, but wasn't very compelled by either.

Then on a whim I bought a massive touring bike because it was cheap and in great shape. First day and a half or so I was thinking "what the fuck have I done", but after riding it a couple of days, it's growing on me extremely rapidly.

I just about shit myself when ai walked to my garage and found a small pool of oil underneath my biku.

Upon further inspection it seems that I didnt tighten my filter enough and it has managed to work its way loose enough to leak.

You guys know of a torque wrench that works well in tight spaces?

I know I could probably just wing it, but if that oil filter goes it will dump oil underneath my rear tire.

Wut do?

I already dealt with leaks form the drain plug. I fucking dropped my crush washer into my oil drain pan and it didn't come out. Over the three or so days after that, I lost half a quart of oil and always walked back to a nice little oil stain wherever I parked.

Well I feel fuckin humiliated. I went for a ride Friday and Saturday and both days were just awful.

Friday I was out riding and I met this 6'2 arayan chad on a fireblade. Dude had no chickenstrips on his rear or FRONT tire. I asked him for some riding pointers and he offered to ride behind me. I obliged and immediately got super nervous so my riding went to shit. I tried to impress this Chad and ended up crossing the double yellows once. He told me something about body positioning, but the dudes been riding dirt bikes since he was 4 and up until 2 years ago ONLY rode track.

So then Saturday I decided to earn my confidence back. While I was in the twisties I came up on a dude in a Carrera GT. I tried keeping up with him as well and again I was crushed.

I just wanna ride like motogp peoples :(

I've looked into them, but this bike was $1800 and really clean. It is kind of a bitch to wrestle around in parking lots and my garage, but it's easy enough to ride actually out on the road. I wish I could plant my feet better, though, with the weight and top heavy-ness.

I guess I could re-sell it and re-coop my money, I cleaned it up, put fresh gas in, and replaced the air filter.

Watch your footing on slick surfaces, simple trips or slips is what makes a lot of people drop bike. Other than that just pretend nobody on the road can see you, because theres a good chance they dont.

I have never dropped a street bike or wrecked in my almost 9 years of riding, feelsgoodman

Don't know of a recommended brace, but they do have a bit of twisting in the forks during harder cornering. Later models like the 1200 completely solved it with bigger diameter fork tubes.

Also at low speeds there's a little bit of wobble. For the gl1000 they basically took the forks from a cb750 and put them on a bike the weighed an extra 250-300lbs. Think R3 forks on a busa.

Here's what looks to be the most popular option for a brace: http://cyclemax.com/inc/sdetail/gl1000_gl1100_superbrace_fork_brace/29809/187629

Why are naked bikes the only ones that are aesthetically pleasing? All the fairings on sports bikes, yuck, aside from aerodynamics, they all look like they were designed by the same people who design Ed Hardy shirts. I feel ashamed for people taking those things into the streets, stay in the track with your plastic abominations. Feels bad that modern nakeds try to look edgy af instead of following the simplistic beauty and design of earlier nakeds.

Dirtbikes are for people named Cleetus and choppers/customs are for homos so don't even start.

THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE.png

which of these would be best for a first and only bike for a 6' tall 205 lbs man?
>>
>>17166642
unless your tourer revs to like 4k it doesn't have "yuge" torks
if it did it would also have power
you calculate one using the other
>>
>>17166642
Power is just torque integrated over RPM.

>>17166644
It's a 20 year old shitbike being ridden year round and it hadn't been cleaned in 1000 km when I took the pic. I think the can was rusted when I bought her, the rust was just covered with spray paint.
I guess I'll paint it over again.
>>
>>17166644
Ever heard of the term "jap scrap"?

Muffler made out of cheap, rusting metals.
>>
>>17166642
It doesn't even have that much torque..
>>
>>17166649
Gs 500
You will switch eventually.

The scout of course.

Indian scout is probably the only dbt approved cruiser that exists other than more expensive indians.
>>
>>17166649
too heavy | too rare | too powerful
get the bmw and ride it in cuck mode like the midlife crisis you are
>>
>>17166650
Mine revs to ~7k, normal riding is at 3-4k.

>yuge
Never said that, just high.
>>
>>17166661
Ride anyway if it's dry.
If it rains, ride anyway.

But I vote for the Guzzi because muh exotic and aesthetics

R1200R (pre-LC, not first gens)

Will last you for at least 200k km.

>It's a 20 year old shitbike being ridden year round and it hadn't been cleaned in 1000 km when I took the pic
My 16y/o bike hasn't seen a washer in 2k km, ridden all year round. No rusty muffler.
>>
>>17166682
Post bike.

I believe you though, my bike has no rust because it's almost entirely aluminum, stainless, or it's powder coated.
>>
>>17166607
Because it's a sport tourer

>>17166621
SPORT
TOURER

>>17166627
Limited market They aren't super cheap to make either, as even though they aren't at the cutting edge performance wise they're still pretty high technology bikes, plus it's a niche bike for a specific audience, most of whom are still holding on to their 10-20 year old VFRs. It's sort of the last of the old big sport bikes that were aimed at the road and not the track and bought by old dudes that still want to ride that type of bike and not an adventure cuck bike or a Goldwing.
>>
>>17166681
Yea, he should use Kelvin 295K or bust.

Most recent pic with the muffler showing.
The pipes are corroding, I know.
This is just after I cleaned her the last time.
>>
>>17166673

Oh, I'm riding no matter what, but last week one of my tire plugs came out and my clutch cover gasket started leaking so I had to order a new one and got a new tire mounted. Meanwhile it was around 80 with lows in the 60s. One of the best riding weeks of the month.
>>

the header pipe is fairly fucking rusty though.

At least the muffler isn't brown from rust.
