Why are naked bikes the only ones that are aesthetically pleasing? All the fairings on sports bikes, yuck, aside from aerodynamics, they all look like they were designed by the same people who design Ed Hardy shirts. I feel ashamed for people taking those things into the streets, stay in the track with your plastic abominations. Feels bad that modern nakeds try to look edgy af instead of following the simplistic beauty and design of earlier nakeds.

Dirtbikes are for people named Cleetus and choppers/customs are for homos so don't even start.

how often do you guys clean your chains and how?

for me about every 2,000km i just spray it with a heap of wd40, scrub with a tooth brush wipe down with a rag, then apply chainsaw bar oil (same shit as chain lube) with the same rag usually

I use chain clean, toothbrush n water. About once a month.

Degreaser, chain brush, rinse w/water then chain lube about every 1000 miles

2000-3000km, depends on the weather and if it went offroad more often.

Spray Diesel on the chain, toothbrush, rag and clean the excess with compressed air. Rag again, then lube with chainsaw oil, pic related.

Whenever it looks dirty, never really kept track. Probably around 2500km or so.

Go for a ride so it's warm, spray with WD40, rub it with a rag until it's all sparkly, then chain wax and forget about it until it's dirty again.

Not specifically a Harley, but I do like their styling, engines, and the fact that they're American built is kinda cool. I'm definitely not part of the Harley club though, I don't like the chrome and massive baggers.

I like the blacked out styling, relaxed but not quite cruiser level riding position, low end torque, and sound of the engine. Sorta reminds me of an old pre-1990s American muscle car but in a bike form.

>>17167675
I really don't like the Indian styling though, and I've heard they lack the low-down torque that the Evolution engines have. Like I said I like the torque an the blacked out styling.

I've been looking at Yamaha Bolts, but I honestly don't really know much about them. Part of me wants to buy American, but then part of me thinks the Japanese Bolt would be a better bike.

I think the CMX500 would struggle on the interstate though. The Bolt for example has a 942cc engine, so almost twice the displacement as the Honda. I think it'd handle cruising on the interstate a bit better because of the larger engine.

i used to think europeans were oppressed by the tiered licensing, because even on 600s, liters and torque monsters i've never seen beginner riders do something quite that dumb after learning the basics of riding. even my 14 year old sister learned to ride a dirtbike (on pavement) in an afternoon and hopped right on her boyfriend's 600 without issue.

but now i know
>>
>>17167804
The 1200 forty eight would probably win out over the 883 for me if it weren't for the retarded 2.2 gallon fuel tank. You'd have to fill up every 100 miles.

I've learned that you really gotta see the bikes in real life to appreciate the design. They can look a bit odd in pictures. Bikes like the H2 or S1000RR look retarded in pictures but there is something mystical about them in person. You get such a violent feeling from it.

The MT10 looks OK online in pictures but actually looks retarded in real life so that is another good example

I would hate having inspections. I'd rather deal with seeing the retarded lighting occasionally than that. Inspections shouldn't even be necessary to prevent that. Police could easily just ticket people for retarded bulb swaps and blacked out tail lights but they don't.

Police could also ticket people for any other violation on the road, but why not do it preemptively?

Bike looks good, cheap for the colour scheme, but the regular colours are about that price or cheaper. Maybe it's a bit lower in price because there are NO service records. But it has not been used during the winters and the mileage is very low.
It doesn't have ABS, which is a good thing.

Ask if he can not start it before you arrive (check this by feeling the cylinders), as a cold start tells a lot. Just after it starts, cover the exhaust a bit with your hand, to listen to the engine itself.

How it goes at a private buyer in the UK, I don't know.

Alright /dbt/, I need a little help.

I fucked up and overpaid for an older bike that isn't running quite right, so now I'm sticking with it until I can get it running properly.

>1982 Honda CB750 Nighthawk

When I first picked it up, it was gutless at low RPM and would die if you gave it too much gas anywhere below about 2500 rpm. Needed to warm up a while, lots of throttle hesitation, no power, etc. Once it stumbled up over 2500 though, the bike came alive and pulled strong all the way to redline.

The gas in the tank smelled a little off so I figured it had been sitting. I drained all the old gas, put two gallons of fresh gas in, and a can of seafoam. Ran it a little while to get the new fuel and seafoam in, then let it sit over night. Ran it to warm it up a few times over the next day and it seemed like it was improving a bit, even though it was still rough like it was missing on one cylinder under ~2k RPM. I cleaned the air filter out (it's paper, should replace it but just trying a quick fix) which also seemed to help a little.

So this morning I decided to give it another try. I started it up, let it warm up, and went to the gas station right next to my house to put another 2.5 gallons in to dilute the seafoam.

It's still gutless and missing at low RPM, comes alive at ~2200 and pulls stong up to about 5k RPM. Now though it seems like it runs out of steam and starts to bog after 5k though. I couldn't get it above 70mph on the insterstate, so now I'm scratching my head.

Next things I'm going to check are

>Plugs
>Plug wires
>Check for spark
>Replace air filter

But beyond that I'm a little lost. I was hoping to avoid pulling the carbs, but I will if I have to. Ideas? The bike is immaculate in every other way, everything works, I just want it to run right so I can ride or sell it. Pic related, not mine but looks just like it.
>>
>>17168595
Post boipucci then
>>
>>17168595
No, because I ride all year long, while you have to sit out the best season.
>>
>>17168620

If it has been sat for a while, there's a good chance the old fuel has gunked up the carbs. My brother's old Suzuki Bandit did the exact same thing. Try new plugs, if that doesn't work, your best bet it trying to clean the carbs out. We used a compressed air line and blew into the carb from the exhaust side and a massive slug of gunk came out into the air box. After that it ran beautifully.
>>
>>17168620
Carbs, i hope you got the stock airbox because if not your in for a ride
>>
>>17168620
Carbs, pull em and clean. They are not as bad to work on as they are made out to be, just take pictures along the way if you dont really know what you are doing
>>
>>17168642
>>17168667

Yeah, unfortunately I figured it might be something like that. I recently had to take my XR650's carb apart and clean it after it had sat for a few months, which totally solved a similar issue.

Carbs themselves don't intimidate me, but it's always been the biggest pain in the ass getting them out and back into bikes in my experience. Maybe this bike will be easier. Also, I know on these multi-carb bikes they need to be "synchronized" which I have absolutely no experience with and don't know where to start. I've only ever worked on single carb bikes before. How do I get them all tuned exactly the same?

>>17168644

Bike is 100% stock as far as I can tell.

Alright guys, post your garages motorcycle history in chronological order.

State your current age first. Then bikes, starting from the first. What age you were when you got each, and what became of it. Maybe a line about what you'd like to get next, too.

>Current age 25
>1983 Honda CR80 / 12 / Sold
>1982 Kawasaki KX125 / 15 / Sold
>1982 Honda XL200R / 17 / Sold
>2005 Honda XR650L / 19 / Favorite so far, still have it.
>1992 Yamaha TW200 / 25 / Wife's first bike, she's getting into it with surprising fervor.
>1982 GL1100 / 25 / Just got it, growing on me rapidly.
>1982 CB750SC / 25 / Work in progress.

I don't know if Japanese companies just sold a shitload of bikes in 1982 or what, it's pure coincidence I ended up with so many from the same year. I'm also not a hardcore Honda fanboy or anything, there are just so many floating around that they're easy to come by. The CB750SC is the first "sport" bike I've ever ridden more than a couple of miles, but it's not operating at potential yet.

Next step for me is going to be some kind of 600-700 class modern sport.
>>

Sticking with the CB for another year at least probably, I promised myself not to upgrade before getting my first car. Planning to upgrade to a CBF600 or maybe Hornet 599, after that we'll see. Until then: don't shrek the CB, keep her running for as long as possible. I doubt I'll sell her, she's so cheap to maintain and insure and really practical for all city riding. The narrow tires make it easy to lean from what I hear, not that I have much to compare it to.

>I'd love to get experience on a bike that big so I don't fuck up on a bike I've never touched on my test.

Riding a bike like that on CBT experience would get you killed pretty quickly. You learn the bike for your test over several lessons before your test, by the time your test comes around you'll be super used to it.

Yea that's what I was thinking, I can afford the Daytona on a part time and selling old bikes, even with a shitty real job i'll be able to make some progress.

BSA is in a bunch of boxes at the back of my dads shop, I think I have almost everything but it was taken apart in '74 and left in a garage so i'm sure something is missing. First step is to get the cylinders re sleeved, the little bit that hangs down into the case got broken at some point but I've got a set of NOS pistons and sleeves so I just need to send it out to a machinist once I get ready to do it.

Thanks, I bought it from the second owner with 1200 miles on it in 2011 I think.

The story he told me was that the first owner bought it brand new as a first bike, and within 3 months wrecked in the dirt and somehow broke his back, ending his riding days forever. Second owner replaced all the plastics and damaged parts, and used it to ride back and forth to work a couple times a month in the summer until his wife made him sell it or something. When I bought it, it had a little scuff on the front right fork and was missing the passenger foot pegs but otherwise looked like it had just rolled out of the dealership. Worth every penny of the $4200 I think I paid.

I've since put ~18,000 miles on it on and off road, dumped it at least a dozen times, sunk it a couple, and generally made the absolute most of it. It's starting to show a little wear around the edges, but still runs strong. New exhaust is next. I'll probably keep it forever.

What's wrong with alpinestars? Is the quality not in line with the price?

this seems like a bit of an exaggeration, though I agree with the general point. Trackdays around here are ~$200, more like $150 at the low end.

Sounds like it's time to upgrade to a house with a garage if you can afford it, or a length of heavy chain and a meaty lock if you can.
>>
>>17170302
Meh, personally I feel like their gloves aren't the best quality. I can't speak from experience because I haven't owned a pair long term but they seem sort of cheapo, especially their lower end line.

I don't live there anymore. I had them in a carport, chained up, and under a tarp.

It was just a small group of kids targeting them because they knew I had them, eventually found out who it was though.

It's not like there's a lot of options in the full leather waterproof sport glove segment, especially with as much of a pain it is to buy Dainese here.
>>
>>17170336
I did tho
>>
>>17170339
Rukka, held and rev'it come to mind when I think high quality waterproof gloves. I'm fairly certain all of them have a leather and goretex sport model.

Get after market leavers with adjusters
>>
Lads I either need THICC gloves, or heated ones. I'm talking 4°C and not freezing. Any recommendations?
>>
6 days, 24 different bikes, 1 response when asked simple questions like "do you have a clean title" and "when can I come and give you my moneys". Just bought ready to give up on craigslist used bikes.
>>
>>17170384

4c isn't even that cold. Dainese makes a pair of nice insulated ones, but honestly with the wind speed you're not likely to keep your hands warm with gloves alone. Especially if your bike doesn't have full hand covers.

Look into heated grips for your bike. I don't know anything about heated gloves, so I can't help you there.
>>
>>17170394

I've bought two bikes on Craigslist in the last 4 days. It isn't that hard anon.

I missed out on one bike I really wanted because the guy didn't respond, then he got all butthurt when I told him I wasn't interested any more because I bought a different bike when I didn't hear from him.
>>
>>17170407
Don't know what it is, just straight up not getting responses. Double checked my spam filtering, etc. Only the one guy has responded, and he flaked out when I said I wanted to bring a new battery and make sure the engine turned over on his bike that just came out of storage after 12 years.
>>
>doing wheelies on my way to work

I know I should be covering the rear brake but it feels so damn uncomfortable.
>>
>>17170429
you sure you're not emailing people who want you to call or text?
>>
>>17170451
Nope. I know to check that. The only one who said anything about it said they preferred text, but didn't enter a number. Oh well. I'll give it another few days, and then just go buy a new bike if nothing is moving.
>>
>>17170429

Instead of sending the email through craigslist, try to text or call them if there's a phone number. I have way, way better luck with texting than I do emailing.

It is amazing to me how bad people are at selling things.

>Title isn't notarized
>No gas in the bike
>Tires are low
>It's covered in dust that would take 10 seconds to wipe off
>You show up to look at it and it takes them 15 minutes to get it out of the shed
>You schedule a time to come by and only their wife is home and has no idea you were coming
>They can only show the bike for 15 minutes between 3:45 and 4:00 on Wednesdays

Just the stupidest shit.
>>
>>17170431
then adjust the pedal. They're adjustable and setting up your controls should be one of the first things you do when you get a bike
>>
Reeeeeeee someone make a new thread
>>
>>17170394
you're probably using email, aren't you? Calling is the best way to get a seller's attention, or text if you can't call.

I guess people are just especially retarded in your area. Do you live somewhere with heavy metals, like old industrial hubs? Or maybe somewhere with a dormant lead mining industry?

The worst are the people that say no test rides.

Like fuck right off if you think I'd buy a bike without ever riding it. All I need is to go around the street to make sure the clutch isn't slipping and all the gears work

Generally they're just scared. If you show proof that you can buy it if you fuck it up they'll let you ride.

The Nighthawk was a sport standard, and it's no slouch.

I haven't run into one of those yet, but I would never buy a bike from someone that wouldn't let me at least test ride it around the block.

rolling the bars forward in the clamp can put them a little farther away if that's what you want.
Anyway there's a practically infinite selection of aftermarket bars available.

My understanding is that any dot/Snell/ece rated helmet is going to give you decent protection in a crash (the differences between the ratings are basically enforcement policies (Snell's better) and an emphasis on safe deceleration and force distribution (dot) vs shear toughness and ability to survive impact w/sharp things like curbs and posts (Snell). iirc, anyway.)

Above 100 USD you're paying for convenience/comfort, not so much safety. Expensive helmets will be lighter, quieter, better ventilated, fog less, and have bells and whistles like multiple positions to lock the visor in, emergency release cheek pads for the EMTs to stabilize your spine, vent shutters, faster visor swapping, etc, etc.
