DS headlights have shit output though

For any semi-modern sportbike, the absolute best custom front you could do with regards to cost, aesthetics and functionaloty would be custom brackets and a custom sheet metal cowl holding the stock lights, or the stock lights from a bike with significantly better projectors, to the upper fairing bracket, and then tack a windscreen cut to fit on to that, to make a custom bikini fairing. However, that's fucking hard.

The second best would be to spend a few hundred on a good bucket headlight assembly and see if you can't get brackets that fit around your forks. And then spend another few hundred on rewiring and aftermarket gauges.

Just been down cleaning my chain and noticed something, now I've always had shaft driven bikes before this one and whilst at work, I got the bike shop to fit new chain and sprockets and collected it after work.

Anyway, was cleaning the chain yesterday and found the masterlink, the face plate not only could be wobbled about, but the faceplae of e link was flush with he bits that should be squished down.

duffel bag + straps on whatever necessary to hold it onto the rear seat
i usually wrap one strap around the bag and under grab rails and another around the bag and the tail fairing and just a cord tied between a bag handle and something on the bike in case it does slide back. took a bunch of stuff about 800mi like this and nothing went wrong

You are increasing trail while keeping wheel base about the same.

Doing this gives more feedback and makes motorcycle more stable and suitable for going straigth.

>On this topic generally, does anyone know good resources for motorcycle handling and design

start with wikipedia, google "motorcycle dynamics filetype:pdf", "motorcycle stability filetype:pdf"

Also you can start with info on setting bikes for the track, e.g. suspension tuning/setting geometry, learning what (and how) affects corner exist/mid corner/corner entry.

In order to understand all that stuff either have to have a lot of track time under your belt and playing with bike geometry and suspension settings or be very good at math.

I can appreciate why that would be, but surely I can do just as much damage on a 500 if I speed on it as a 1000? I'm not planning on breaking the law, so is it just down to the characteristics of the bike itself?

I had my eye on a XJR1300. From what I gather it's not particularly quick, even though it's got plenty of low end and a large engine.

The difference is that if you whiskey-throttle a GS 500 nothing is going to happen, whereas on a torquey bike like the XJR you'll flip and die.

>>17142890

Weight and acceleration are important factors for beginners.

gs 90s.jpg

The GS500 is objectively the best beginner bike.
> mileage
It's a mid-sized 4stroke twin cylinder bike, so it drinks less than 6 liters per 100 km.
> handling
It handles nothing like a supersport, spoiling you for when you get something else. But it can also corner much better than something like a cruiser, and actually uses its entire rear tire unlike a Ninja 250.
> brakes
They are complete shit and their only redeeming feature is that they're disc brakes. This is good because the longer braking distance forces new riders to plan ahead and start braking early. No ABS means they learn to brake properly I'd they don't want to get shrekt.
> power
It sits right at the power limit for A2 bikes which is great for euros. It's torquey enough to be faster off the line than most cars you'll encounter in the city. But it also feels relatively gutless so a) it's forgiving of mistakes and b) you can ride it at the limit without putting yourself into too much danger. It reaches up to 180 km/h which is fast enough for highway riding.
> carbs
It being carbed means that if you run into problems, you can learn to fix them yourself instead of heading to the mechanic every time.
> seating position
Upright, slightly forward means it's a neutral riding position so you can figure out what you want afterwards. The seat is relatively uncomfortable making literally every other bike after it will feel like heaven on your ass.
> price and availability
Parts and the bikes themselves are cheap and plentiful. If you crash and fuck up one of your fairings it's 40 euros to replace it with original parts. Engine needs little maintenance. Beginner riders are typically not financially independent, so this is a big plus for them.
> suspension
It's a budget suspension factoring into the overall low cost of getting a GS 500. If you want better suspension it's easy to swap. Therefore it gives beginners an opportunity to learn working on suspension while keeping the cost manageable.

If you want a nice bike to start on and have a 10,000 budget get an FZ-07 (MT-07 in Europe, slightly different), some aftermarket mods for the bike *with frame sliders*, some nice gear that will protect you, and maybe an advanced rider course.

It boils down to training. You can get any bike you want, but before riding it you have to spend some time learning how to ride that thing.

I bet you can learn how to ride a sport bike, dirt bike, etc in UK easily, if you have enough $$$ to pay for it.

mine is fairly dirty

probably going to wash it once the rain dies down
>>

My bike is in a constant state of filthy. Wash it like once a month with a power washer. It's a commuter bike and winter beater, rust and dirt is part of the aesthetic

I would consider that clean.

Dont get me wrong, its a ton of fun. Its only really on the highways I wish I had a bit more, in towns its a blast. Just dont expect to keep up with the liters past 60mph. Its still an absolute wheelie monster with more power than anybody would ever reasonably need and I dont regret buying it one bit.

But then again I got the meme09 because I knew I realistically would not keep my license if I got a liter bike, the temptation to cruise at 150 is just too much - the naked bikes keep speed to a more sane level.

I ride in the middle of the city and they keep the roads fairly well swept, that's about as dirty as it will ever get.

Plus it gets rained on at work so that's pretty much just the 15 minute ride home.

How is a new liter bike that weak? Especially with a 15k msrp? (at least in canada)

Also, I have a Drift Stealth 2. The battery doesn`t charge fully and runs flat within 20 minutes. The battery is stuffed right?

It has an imu and is purpose built for eating miles from back to front with the engine being detuned for NVH reasons.

The FZ is faster around town, and more fun in traffic. A liter bike (or even a 600RR) can exceed all posted speed limits in my state - in first gear.

Do I want one?

Will I lose my license/life in the first week of ownership?

Need your help /DBT/. I popped a freeze plug on my 09 sv650 over the winter so my coolant and oil is mixing. Put it back in with thermal sealant and it's still mixing. Water pump and gaskets look okay but idk how to tell if they're bad, pulled the front head and the gasket looks okay but again I wouldn't know better. How can I know if it's the headgaskets or a cracked block? I'm really hoping it's not a cracked block

FZ-07 anon here. A windshield helps a lot with higher speeds. I've got up to 110 MPH on a back road and still had some twist left in the throttle, and it didn't feel squirly at all. Before I had the windshield on it'd feel pretty crazy at 90+ MPH.

Don't get me wrong, no matter what you do these aren't going to be high speed race bikes, but that's sorta the whole point of the bike, to be more versatile.

This webm makes me wonder how I'd like a shorter throw throttle tube. I have difficulty pinning the throttle on the FZ because the pull is just so damn long my wrist doesn't go that far. I have let go of the throttle and reach pretty far forward if I want to go nuts, which doesn't feel natural at all.
>>
>>17143236
holy shit! I almost flipped when I saw the plate of your baiku! where the fuck did you buy it dude? I've spent eighteen years in Ethiopia and have never seen a bike like yours. All I see are apaches, and hero Hondas mostly and also the occasional Yamaha & Suzuki dual-sports. I was planning on buying the Yamaha dt175 in the next few months, but fuck if I do now that I've seen yours. Seems like I'll have to postpone my purchase. What make is it? And where did you get it, dude?

Im looking at two bikes right now, its going to be my first.
>2007 sv650 for 3,000
Or

Both have low miles, great condition, all stock parts etc.
Price isnt a huge factor but im a little worried about starting on the fz6 because of the hp.
Will i die if i think of fast?
Which one would you choose?

Excuse my saying so, but you must be incredibly wealthy if you can afford to import a motorcycle from elsewhere. I have so many questions but dunno if you can answer them all right now, would you keep in touch if I posted my number here?
