Thoughts on the TW200 as a first bike? Mostly just for putzing around town, but also doing some bike camping. Rode one at an MSF intro event, it seemed nice and simple. It was also the only trainer they had that felt good at 74" tall. Have an appointment to do the written for my learners permit tomorrow, and MSF Basic Rider Course at the end of the month.
>>
>>17132352
TW200 probably won't be good if you plan on doing any road riding above 40mph.

>>17132352
I rode TW200s in MSF too. Liked them a lot for that, but they've been pretty heavily meme taxed in all the markets I've lived in and I expect they'll be pretty scary in fast traffic.
>>
>>17132367

This. A bar I go to always has a bunch of accountants and lawyers riding up on their Harleys and lining them up on the sidewalk. They walk in acting tough, but you can see their fucking dress shirts under their leathers. Laughing stock of the whole place. They get told they get deals on drinks but they still get charged full price.
>>
>>17132417
So jacket as well or just vest.
Cause I kinda have to be hi vis.
Figured the jacket was better than a vest.
>>
>>17132434
I can accept a high vis jacket, it's just a whole nother level of 'tism to throw a vest on over top of that.
>>
>>17132441
Vest over a high vis jacket does seem beyond retarded.
But if I had a regular jacket I would have to use the vest.
I follow the rules I'm given...

>>17132411
Haven't ridden one so I can't say about the ergonomics. The old 200cc single will struggle to keep up though.

Somebody will probably butt in to say it is capable of going 65mph or whatever as its top speed so you shouldn't worry about it, but it's really not enjoyable to hold a bike near top speed for extended periods of time.
>>

>The old 200cc single will struggle to keep up though.
this, also potential for some spoopy headshake over rough pavement at high speed.

Mind, they're fine for easy pootling around surface streets and fire roads, though even for that you'd probably be able to get an XT225 or something for cheaper.

Bucks County is an area of PA that houses a majority of business owners such as concrete and landscaping, no doubt if the bike is as good as it looks it's priced low because the guy has seen reality and knows people can't/don't throw 3k at an old bike. SoCal, not so much.

>>17132352

Despite owning a bunch of bikes my TW200 has been my daily for the best part of a decade.

Brilliant learner bike, crazy awesome turning circle which is great for tight city stuff, great off road, really low maintenance, cheap to run, cheap on parts, huge aftermarket for parts, awesome reliability, easy to work on but they are sloooooow.

No wind, no slopes, they'll pull to 100-110km/h, and i've ridden them at that all day on some long ass trips around Aus, but you'll be lucky to pull 60-80 up really steep inclines and strong head winds will completely fuck you.

Avoid anything before 2001 (they had a fucking horrible rear shock), avoid anything with the drum front brake, and don't get one of the newer ones without a kickstart.

Other than that, literally a perfect around town and weekend camping bike.
>>
>>17133011
Damn.
Couldn't of done that unless I was doing something else for the trip too, and was something I really wanted.

I'm... what. That doesn't make sense, stopping a spinning disc doesn't produce force at an angle to the plane of rotation.

>Rear brake activation pulls the rear tire and frame towards each other
it does the exact opposite actually

>>17134181
>Rear wheel to frame distance is constrained by the swing arm.
your swingarm isn't horizontal so forces acting on the rear wheel that cause the swingarm to move up or down will also move your rear wheel further away from or closer to the frame, respectively
>>
>>17134228
>It's a function of the swingarm pivot and drive pivot not being in the same place.
The drive pivot location has nothing to do with the wheel spinning freely then being decelerated by the rear brake.

>Acceleration also jacks up the back end if you ignore weight transfer.

This is because the point of driving force (the rear axle) is below the pivot point of the swingarm.

When the rear wheel accelerates the bike, the wheel is trying to drive itself under the bike. This causes the suspension to unload.
>>
>>17134253
>it does the exact opposite actually
I wasn't really thinking of this the right way, I was going to say the tail to avoid referring to it as lowering or raising and got lazy.
>>
>>17134228
so it's tension on the chain, actually has nothing to do with the rotation of the tire
>>
>>17134253
>your swingarm isn't horizontal so forces acting on the rear wheel that cause the swingarm to move up or down will also move your rear wheel further away from or closer to the frame, respectively

But thats wrong. Through it's travel the rear wheel is essentially equidistant to the frame because of the swingarm being the connecting link from the frame to the wheel. Under compression and rebound the wheel is swinging about an arc centered on the frame's swingarm pivot.

Are you confusing the frame for the subframe?

>>
>>17134271
Closer to the center of the bike would be a more accurate way of saying it if you're being super autistic, but you get what I'm saying. Stepping on the rear brake compresses the swingarm, lowers the bike, lengthens wheelbase.
>>
>>17134268
Braking force on the wheel will cause it to slow down while the rest of the bike will want to move forward. It would happen even if there was no chain on your bike.
>>
>>17134298
It happens even if the bike isn't moving and the tire isn't on the ground though.
>>
you guys should all read this bike, it's pretty short and easy to follow even for retards like /dbt/, and it's focused on sportbikes but the physics apply to any motorcycle with a fork and swingarm. It covers this type of squat/anti-squat forces (and all the others, because there are many) on the rear suspension in detail

>>
>>17134273
No armchair physics about it. That is the reason most bikes lift in the rear under acceleration.

They will squat in the rear if the axle is equal to or below the horizontal height of the swingarm pivot.

These sam pricipans apply to 3/4 link rear suspension design and the locating of the link attachment points for squat/anti-squat characteristics.

>>
>>17134337

>>
>>17134292
you need to define your terms.

Under acceleration the rear wheel wants to move forward and the chain is pulling it towards the countershaft sprocket. This drives the wheel forward.

Because the wheel pivot (axle) is below the swingarm pivot, the wheel moves downward in an attempt to follow the arc around through the ground to meet the front wheel. This causes anti-squat under acceleration (the wheel moves down and the suspension decompresses).

If you apply the rear brake the wheel wants to move away from the rest of the bike but is constrained by the swingarm again, it then follows the arc upward to compress the suspension until the wheel pivot (axle) and the swingarm pivot are at their furthest point along an axis parallel to the direction of decelerative force. Essentially the suspension compresses until the wheel's axle and swingarm pivot are on the same horizontal plane.

There is nowhere near enough reaction in this mechanism to bring the rear wheel off the ground with the rear brake even if you stomp on it as hard as you can.

speaking of buell
>tfw I have the weirdest boner
>>
>>17134337
It's called a banana swingarm.

Usually they are a function of the need for additional rigidity along with the constraints of drive chain routing.

Usually a banana swingarm is only 'half' banana. the other side has a normal boxed section as on a normal swingarm below the upper drive chain routing and a bracing section above the upper chain routing meant to add rigidity to the structure surrounding the drive forces imparted by the chain.

On the other side these swingarms have the 'banana' section which curves upwards to meet the braced section coming around the tire from the other side. This is the elegant and aesthetic way to provide the rigidity necessary for higher power bikes and not have awkward braces coming down on a square sectioon of tube like you see on some cheap aftermarket braced swingarms. Manufacturers have access to the ability to make large extrusions and castings and weld them together to make these large single peice braced swingarms flow like they do.
>>
>>17134371
>tfw I want to take that frame and put two 450 dirtbike motors, chain them together at the countershafts then drive the rear wheel off another parallel sprocket on the rear engines countershaft.

On its own it's just going to make the bike squat. Somewhere around the point the rear tire is approaching 0% weight transfer it's going to pull it off the ground early (not high enough to be cool of course, it's not like it flips the bike forwards, it just reduces the downward extension of the rear suspension)
>>
>>17134418
I understand. It will slightly pull the wheel up until the axle and swingarm pivot are on or near the same horazontal plane.

But as I explained here:
>>17134345
The reaction of this mechanism is not nearly fast enough to lift the wheel. The rear of the bike will squat slightly and gravity will keep the rear wheel firmly planted on the ground no matter how hard you stomp the brake.

Can anyone recommend a 2 piece perforated leather suit?

What you're asking for simply does not exist.

Just buy a nice jacket and save up for a nice one peice.

Put my bike parallel to the road now, kinda hoping to get ticketed for not saving space so I can start a shitstorm.

next question: are any dual sport / street legal enduro bikes made in Japan? I want honoboru japaneez aruminum and steeru. Looking at WR250R and DRZ400. I wanna sumo it anyways so SM or S. Just for hooning around town, may take it on occasional freeway because you can't get anywhere in LA without freeways

DRZ400S and WR250R/X are the only reasonable street rideable dual sports that are reliable.

WR250 is fuel injected and lighter. Has 6 gears and is smooth on the highway
DRZ makes a bit more power and has more low end torque

Really a toss up depending on what you like. I picked the WR just for the fuel injection, more modern looks, and better highway manners.

Usually yea, except when the temptation to look cool outweighs the convenience of the touring jacket. Have a Revit jacket with a detachable vest. Helmet is neon yellow as well. Not really for safety though. I just have a thing for neon.

also, bikes..

Paintings fine most bsb and Gp helmets are painted, if those boys do it then its not a safety concern.
