It costs $100 more than a DRZ MSRP. And for that $100 you get a modern aluminum frame, USD forks, fuel injection, 6 gears, and less weight.

They are about the same price used.

>>can barely do 80 mph
This is blatant bullshit. They are just as fast and just as capable on the highway as a DRZ. More so because they have a wider ratio spread with 6th gear, smoother motor, better gas mileage, and stiffer front end.

You should never downshift if you're near redline.

The bike is fine to shift based on motor sound. It has tons of overrev anyway.

Also, the WR's stock cluster has the ability to display tach in debug mode.

Ride around with it for a bit to get used to the sound at different rpm if you are somehow a retard who can't manage without a visual indicator.

>you going to be redlining it just riding around town?
I redline the fuck out of mine just riding around town. Why not?

The bike is top heavy on the powerband and likes tro rev, if you want it to move with a purpose you have to spin the motor up. And it's more fun to ride that way.
>>
>>17134945
How accurate are these?
>>
>>17135021
oh its this dingus

i doubt this new rider is going to be riding like that. he can get a feel for the bike and ride it at low RPM without a tach just fine.
>>
>>17135024
as accurate as just about any tachometer, but you don't need one at all, and it's going to be retarded trying to read it while riding.

unless you're deaf, you don't need a tach
>>
>>17135029
I'm not arguing that he needs a tach.

I said here:
>>17134947
>>17134959
That the bike is easy to read based on sound alone even if you're riding it at high rpm, and it has a lot of overrev even if you do shit the bed on a shift.

You can hear and you can feel when the bike starts to level off on power at the top, and then you have about 2000rpm of overrev to play with beyond that. It really is about as idiot proof as it can be without flashing tach numbers in your face.

The guy has nothing to worry about and doesnt need a tach.

There's really no reason to rev it out that far. it doesnt make peak power near redline, only ever have to rev it to about 9500rpm to get as much acceleration out of it as you're going to get.

Then the 2000rpm to its 11,500rpm fuel cut is just an ass load of forgiving overrev or revs available for hauling ass on the freeway.

This. Since I ride a rebel 250 below 50mph and am god at not crashing there is no way I will ever slide on my ass. That only happens if you try to drag knee on a gixxer.

Alright, /dbt/, I've got a dilemma.

I have an MC22, revvy little shit. Logically, more stress on the valves, plus it's a common learner bike, so maintenance can be neglected.

Went to the (very reputable, family owned) mechanic, he said around $300 to check the valves, and absolute worst case (replacing all 16 shims), $600 to adjust. He said that the worst case is very unlikely, because the CBRs he's seen have amazing valve lifespans. I then told him I'm nearing 82000km on the odometer, and he goes "Okay, might have to allow for a few being out of spec".

I told dad, who's wrenched on his bikes on and off, and has ridden for the last 40 years. He said it's not worth getting checked or replaced until you know for certain they're fucked, because worst case, my bike runs a little worse if valves are completely out of spec. If they all get changed though, there's the potential for uneven wear and other problems down the line.

Now, I want my bike to last forever. I also logically agree with my dad about what happens when a valve is out of spec (not great, but not apocalyptic). Then again, my bike is a revvy little shit, so maybe valve stuff is more important.

What do?

you are a sack of meat, and the road is very, very strong and abrasive. you are not in control of when you crash. wear some goddamn gear, please
>>
>>17135397
>>17135397

Better option is to keep the bike stock and buy a second, older, but faster bike. The Mods will only get so much hp. They will also be very expensive.
>>
>>17135400

possibly, depends on your population density/preference. Some places are just harder to sell certain bikes.

Where I live, there are a lot of older guys who buy cruisers, decide they don't want to ride anymore, and then put the bike up for sale with like 1k mi on it. The market near me is super saturated with that shit.
>>
>>17135404
It just runs out of beans up top likely due to the gearing or maybe the exhaust. Peak power is supposedly up around 9k but 5.5-8 is where the magic happens.

A full system and tune supposedly takes the bike into the mid 80s in hp.

easy mods are a race exhaust, high octane fuel tune (ignition advance), and light weight wheels

if you want to sacrifice the top speed and highway economy changing the gearing will make it feel a lot different

getting further into it you might be able to find a race cam for it but expect to pay a lot

it runs out of power up top because yamaha designed the bike to put its torque peak in low RPM
and make sure your bike isn't some weird restricted model too..

Hi all, was down in the garage giving my bike some much needed tlc, figured I hadn't heard the fan for a while so let the bike run and get hot, fan never kicked in and the redlight for the engine temp came on.

Stopped the bike and let it cool, now I'm shite when it comes to this sort of stuff, the fan manually spins, nothing is blocking it so I don't think it's burned out, but i'm also skint at the moment.

What can I do/check to find the issue? Bike is a 2012 er6n.

Checked the fan fuse, its fine, all electrical connections are fine so I have no clue.

I'm having trouble hitting neutral when i want it lately, and conversely I hit it a bunch of times I didn't want it (uphill is fun). I thought maybe it's just my having a bad day, but today I went to the side of the road and fucked with it for a while and managed to hit something that made the neutral light light up "half-way".

I'm going to bring it to the mechanic sometime soon anyway, is this something that can be cleaned out or does this require a full on clutch replacement?

sv650 btw
>>
>>17135432
it may be the bearing or fan motor itself that's gone. sounds like the motor isn't actually spinning the thing anymore.

could also be that the temperature sensor isn't working.

try disconnecting the fan and maybe disconnecting the sensor to see if the fan spins. if it does, the sensor sucks. if not, the motor sucks.
>>
>>17135433
Could be your selector internals.

Do you do a lot of 1>2>1 shifting?
>>
>>17135433
your clutch may be out of whack, if it doesn't fully disconnect it can be difficult to engage neutral.

I had this issue a while back, turned out to clear up once my engine oil got changed and the transmission/clutch got less gunky.
>>
>>17135438
>Do you do a lot of 1>2>1 shifting?
absolutely, lots of city riding
>>17135441
>turned out to clear up once my engine oil got changed and the transmission/clutch got less gunky.
conveniently that's one of the things i want from the mechanic, you've alleviated my worries
>>
>>17135447
You don't change your own oil?
>>
>>17135450
eh, if I had the cash I'd let the mechanic do it. it's a messy as shit job and takes a long time with fairing removal.

>>17135447
no worries dude, most of the time it's unusual that mechanical bits break completely. you'll usually see it happening over time, and it'll be very clear. this sort of weird occurrence is usually the perishable stuff going wrong.
>>
>>17135432
hook up the fan connections to a 12v battery and see if it spins up
if not it's either a problem with the wiring (check for continuity) or the temperature sensor. I don't specifically know for the er6n but most I've had were an independent water sensor in the radiator that was only connected to the fan but all my bikes have been pre 2008
>>
>>17135427
>buy good gear
>do track day
What's the problem?
>>
>>17135450
>You don't change your own oil?
I'd do it but I'm having him fix like 5 other things as well, might as well get it taken care of
>>17135451
>no worries dude, most of the time it's unusual that mechanical bits break completely. you'll usually see it happening over time, and it'll be very clear. this sort of weird occurrence is usually the perishable stuff going wrong.
That's genuinely reassuring. I've jammed the flywheel beyond repair once already and I'd rather not have a repeat
>>
>>17135432
Check the motor for the fan itself, clearly the temp sensor is working if the high temp light came on.

Unplug the fan and Ohm it out.

Then put the meter in DC and measure the leads coming from your wiring harness.

Either your fan is fucked up or its not getting power.

Which tyres should I get for touring on tarmac in bad conditions and ocasional offroading?

So far Im thinking Heidenau K60 Scout or Continental Escape.

The K60s seem to be better offroad and have a great lifespam, but they are worse in wet tarmac.
The Conti's are a bit worse offroad but good in every tarmac conditions.

Any sugestions? Bike is a Kawasaki KLE500 if that helps.

Plants "breath in" CO2. Having more CO2 helps more plants grow. Over the past several hundred thousand years, earth's atmosphere had a relatively stable and low amount of CO2. Now that the CO2 levels have significantly risen, more plants are growing. Is that hard to understand?

The bad part about having more CO2 in the atmosphere is that it doesn't allow long-wave radiation to pass through so Earth retains more heat.

Modern bikes have catalytic converters though.

Even my aftermarket slipon has a catalytic converter! And its cute! Cute!

(Not my bike but same model & exhaust)

Should I take it or leave it? Could I do better in a private sale?

You can always do better in a private sale. The dealer has to make money somehow.

The change is pretty insignificant to me.

>>17136447
It does vary naturally, but in the past couple hundred years it has obviously exceeded natural variations. Almost as if CO2 is a product of combustion, and more combustion has occured since the industrial revolution or something.
>>
>>17136492
Yes you will do better in private.

Dont expect aftermarket parts to ever increase the bikes resale value though.

feel the need to be sarcastic about something i didnt deny?

Point was its not a particularly "sudden" rise.

also why do alarmist graphs never feature a 0 line for comprehension? Its almost like they want to make changes appear larger than they are.

Be careful out there, lads
>>
>>17136459
>>17136442
Catalytic converters don't really help with climate change though. The primary purpose of a cat is to convert poisonous carbon mononxide (CO) into the much less dangerous carbon dioxide (CO2). The funny thing is increased CO2 levels are the primary cause and concern regarding unnatural climate change.

The weather was so nice for once, above 10°C. I had been riding all winter and freezing everywhere, so the ride was amazing. Suddenly it started raining, so I was suprised and looked up into the sky to see if there was a cloud. You can figure out the rest by yourself... See, it's such a dumb mistake. Not keeping my eyes on the road.
>>17136650
I was fine, wearing full gear. Would rather take a hit myself than the bike though. Everyone who stopped only cared about me, not the bike
