Because by lane splitting we make room in traffic for someone else. Otherwise, we would take a spot where a car could be otherwise. Second, personal safety, lots of car people don't see bikers in traffic

Also, in plenty of european countries it is illegal to block a bike filtering. If you're so upset about being late while raging about bikes, get one yourself. I live in th e Netherlands, I commute 25 km single way to my uni. It takes about 13 minutes by bike, or 30+ by car. My parttime job is 55km away, 40 minutes by bike or over an hour by car
>>

Kek, my dad is over 50 and recovering from a broken spine and even he was blown away by how comfortable an S1000RR is. Unless you're made of glass and paper, or are 200 with severe arthritis, most sport bikes are fine.

In a sense, sure. That sense being: something fun to thrash around first world countries. In other senses, such as demands on the rider, the viffer is a higher-class bike.
>weary of 2006
IIRC, it was something like a change in tuning or some other very minor improvement over earlier models. In any case:
>heated grips are standard
>"standard" brakes are very good
>belt drive is literally NO maintenance

I would love to ride a VFR, both for the sake of it, and for comparison to my own 800cc bike. I don't expect them to be comparable to the point of being competitors for the same market segment though.

Nah. Top speed isn't even a big deal in most cases. The main disadvantage in my opinion is being too revvy.
>>
>>17032358

>The main disadvantage in my opinion is being too revvy.

Well, the amount of revs isn't the problem, it's having to rev so high to make sufficient power. Really, 750s are the perfect middle ground between 600 and 1000. Lightweight chassis, powerful engine.
>>
>>17032286
Americans got WR250 2-strokes up until 1996 I think. Back then they were practically just a YZ250 with a lighting coil and wider spread gear ratios.

>>17032345
I've heard it's this bike, all years, that has a flat spot on the torque curve around 4k rpm. That's where she sits cruising 120kph in 6th, so probably an economical tune characteristic. Even if so, it's not really noticeable during enthusiastic street riding, and hammering through gears isn't impeded by it.
>>
>>17032337

Why are light blue bikes so rare?
>>

Yeah. I didn't mean having revs available is a problem. It's just
>"low" tork means you have to rev to make power
>close gear ratios are used so you can keep it in the power band while going fast
>close gear ratios have the disadvantage of not getting into the power band right away when launching
>then even in top gear you're at like 7k+ rpm just to cruise at 75mph. Not ideal for cruising in my opinion.

>Lightweight chassis, powerful engine.
A liter chassis really isn't much heavier than that of a 600.
>>
>>17032187
I don't know your location but he'd get 5 for it here in California fairly easy.

They don't make a bunch of power but they ride well and are super reliable. Not a bad bike if you have been out of the game for a while and you'll be riding mild dirt on the regular.
>>
>>17032341
Shorter gears don't help when the torque curve is peakier.
The powerband is considerably narrower on 600s.

>>17032358
>suspension hasn't advanced since the late 90s

That's true, though they tend to have more compact geometry. Like the GSXR600 is noticeably smaller than the 1000. But then the 750 is like, 85% the power of the 1000 in the smaller package. A good compromise if you're somebody that is too scared of a litrebike, even though the 750 is meant to be ballistic.

Electronic suspension is only available in a few models over the past couple years. It's not even that big of a deal since traditional suspension can be set up to work the same if you know what you're doing.
By the early 2000s, they had figured out what kind of geometry works well and how to dampen bumps. There's not a whole lot you can do (for handling) to advance from there other than electronics.

I live in the US and own both a DR-Z400S and a street legal 450EXC. The EXC has more power and internal gearing ratios as well as being slightly lighter. So when looking at the numbers the EXC has better performance.
However the DR-Z is a better bike in my opinion. It's more reliable and longer-lasting. It is more durable. It is more comfortable to ride for a long time. And it has better suspension. Despite what people will tell you about the DR-Z having "old and outdated" suspension, it does work really really well.

I will probably sell the EXC and keep the DR-Z.

I'm a second-year rider on an R3, started out on a Ninja 250. For any anons unfamiliar with the inside-baseball, the Ninja 250 is ranked somewhere in the 3-5 range of best bike, while the R3 and GS500 duke it out over the 1 and 2 slots.

I was always impressed by the performance of the Ninja 250, but it just isn't in the same league as my R3. The drop-off in engine performance when you leave the 250cc class is pretty steep, and it must be even steeper when you look at sub-250cc bikes. I mean this in the least arrogant way possible.

The consensus on /dbt/ is that most of the value-added comes from the additional low-end torque. I can't speak to the quality of other bikes, but the dominance of the R3 self-perpetuates pretty easily. Knowing that I'm riding the best performing bike for its class is a comforting thought.

>inb4 upside down is better memes
Being upside down gives no advantage when it comes to springing or damping. In fact it can even lead to more trouble with damping because the oil isn't at the large end where most of the work occurs.

The linkage shock does have a definite advantage over PDS shock though. PDS stands for "progressive damping system," yet it cannot provide as natural of a progression as a typical linkage system can.

>>
>>17032644
The only thing I've done to either of them is set the sag and turn clickers. If the KTM requires more "setting up" then it really isn't better, now is it?
The shock on the DR-Z is great. The forks have room for improvement but they're good enough. Never heard anything bad from reviewers other than saying it could use some stiffer springs in the front if you're fat or revalving if you're really picky.
The forks on the EXC are okay. The shock is terrible.
Of the two, I would choose the one with the better shock. Forks are easy to service. Shocks are generally far more complex, and considered by factory service manuals to be "non-rebuildable" by the user. They are especially complex in the case of the PDS.

What is it with DRZ riders insisting they have the best bike in the world? It's a fine bike but trying to say it's better than a 450 EXC is laughable.

Not saying it's the best bike in the world. It's not great at any particular thing. It just strikes a really good balance for the dual sport world. The EXC makes a good dirt bike. I just don't have the time/money to go out and ride single track every weekend. The DR-Z makes more sense for me (and most other casual riders).

Hop on craigslist, find a $200 1970's japanese motorcycle, make friends with someone with a welder/shop.

Pardon the bum picture, I built this in a cave, from a box of scraps. It probably cost me all of $600 to finish and costs $22/m to insure.

This is in Canada so down there in the Americans it's probably about $30 and 5,000 K-Mart points.

>>
>>17033198
What's your point? You said the F700GS is more capable, but on the street they are very comparable and neither are real adventure or offroad bikes. That's why I pointed out the lack of wire wheels on the F700GS despite being a more expensive bike.

>>17033210
>passenger
Why are you looking at an adventure bike at all? Get an V Strom 1000 if you have your heart set on playing Long Way Round.

When you say rocky roads, do you really mean gravel roads? If you do, just get whatever you want this side of a Goldwing and don't ride like an asshole when the pavement briefly ends.

What makes the F700GS better? The Vstrom is lighter, costs less, has the same shitty alloy wheels, nearly identical power.

Tell me why you would ever buy an F700GS over a V strom 650?

If we were talking about the F800GS I would say that one, but they are really expensive, especially in ADV guise.

You fags are just spouting BMW memes at this point. This coming from someone who drank the BMW koolaid years ago.
>>
>>17033232
I don't really need a liter bike since -this is a spoiler- she's like less than 50 kilos -end spoiler-
Maybe a few actual rocky roads but, yeah. Mostly gravel.
>>
>>17033260
Plus gear. How fast do you expect to be traveling? The 650 will do it, but the extra power will be welcome for extended two-up riding at highway speeds.

Regardless, ADV bikes are not designed with passengers in mind. I would get something else. Whatever you decide on, make sure you install a backrest. No, a top case is not a substitute for a backrest unless it's designed as such.
>>
>>17033273
No faster than 90km. Maybe a bit above that on the rural highways. Probably 100km max.

Yeah. I was thinking about just teaching her to ride a bit. But she's barely 5 feet and a bit skittish so I don't like the idea of letting her on a bike herself.

Guess it's a wee strom with a backrest unless some amazing off roadable goldwing comes out. And I get the extra organs I need to sell so I can afford it.
>>
>>17033258
F700GS has longer suspension travel than the V Strom 650. It also has the tail mounted tank set up that the F800GS has, keeping the weight centralized. The F700GS and the V Strom 650XT are $600 apart MSRP without either of them having crash protection or luggage. It would probably come down to personal preference.
>>
>>17033313
Go sit on some bikes, take your skeleton girl with you.
Find one thats confortable for both.

Also, gravel roads tend to turn pretty rough so dont abandon the idea of an ADV bike. I think the V Strom is pretty perfect for what you are planing.
>>
>>17033313
Why couldn't a goldwing ride down a gravel road?
>>
>>17033313
My girlfriend is 5'5" and 115lb (good luck metric fag) and she rides. She has a Ninja 250 and just bought a V Strom 650. I rode the Strom home when we bought it and made me really jealous compared to my 2001 BMW R1150GS. The Strom is a seriously nice bike, especially for the price. Her strom has lowering links and a low seat pan and my girlfriend is fine on it unless there's a side hill or something.

If you get her to start riding, get used to picking her bike up in parking lots.

>>17033339
And the XT has fucking wire wheels, it's more ADV than the F700GS. A base V Strom is $8,800 and you can get a NICE one used for $3,500 all day fucking long.

So, you have a tiny bit of suspension travel on a bike that has wheels that are NOT suited for offroad travel where that extra suspension would be put to good use and a slightly lower center of gravity? Yeah, I'd spend $1,200 more for that...
>>
>>17033366
