Good topic. This was my first bike, back in 1999. Great learner bike. 650cc single, air cooled. Good power off the line to keep the ride fun, but it did top out at 70-75 miles per hour.

Light enough to have never caused me to drop it, in three years of ownership.

Fan of Jap bikes for lyfe. Currently 2014 CBR600RR.

20+ years rider here.

Yes, I don't know what else is in your area, but that's a great deal, especially if it's true about the new tires and chain.

If it starts easily, runs decent, and the brakes are okay (check lines; by now they may need to be replaced), it's a great deal.

On a bike that age, old rubber has probably reduced the effectiveness of the entire braking system enough to compromise safety considerably.

Old lines won't necesarily make it unsafe, but if you put new brake lines on the braking will feel less spongy.

I have a pair of Cortech Scarab gloves because they're 3M insulated and waterproof. I've had them for maybe 3 years now and they're great.
Held makes the best ones though or so I've been led to believe.
>>
>>17002388
When the front end gets too light, as in barely touching ground, any tiny input pushes on the gyroscopic effect of the front wheel, which then tries to reset itself and can in most cases turn into the oscillation we see here. Since there's no resistance, it's free to start gorging on reactive input on every swing of the bars.
This is why steering dampers are a thing, to starve the returning 'energy' of the gyroscope instead of feeding it.

P much the only way to get out of a tankslapper is to give it more throttle.

If I get a full exhaust do I really need a tune?

Can a tune be done at home with a fuel controller?
>>
>>17002572
>If I get a full exhaust do I really need a tune?
Depends on the bike.
>Can a tune be done at home with a fuel controller?
Depends on the bike.

For example, on my Husky you can change the exhaust, but you have to leave the baffle in. If you remove the baffle, open the airbox or both it runs too lean, so you need a tune. Usually you can change the exhaust and be fine, but unless you get a tune don't expect a noticeable power increase. Some bikes have open ECUs you can tune with software like TuneECU, some don't. KTM 690's you could use TuneECU on up until 2013, 2014 and later, and the Husky versions require a Power Commander. If you go the Power Commander route you can tune it yourself, but the Autotune module that (I think) is necessary is half the price of a dyno tune anyways, and some dude who does it for a living is probably going to do a better job than you.

tl;dr find a forum for your bike and ask there

I think it was the nig-tier battery that fucked it in the end. That and riding like a cunt in traffic caused overheating. Ended up rewinding the generator, new battery, new regulator/rectifier, had bad earths on it as well which I cleaned up.

I blame the grips because (some) Oxford products have a reputation for being pure shite, mainly their security products.

How well could a moderately skilled rider on a supermoto keep up with a rider of equal skill on a sport bike?
>>

Depends entirely on the track..
Supermoto can turn tighter and more easily but a sport bike will have it on the straight

>pull over, walk over to him and ask if he's alright
>he's ran out of fuel and is waiting for the bus
>went past a service station a few miles ago
>tell him I can go over and buy a container of 5 litres of fuel and get it over to him, that way he can stay with his bike
>I got a top box to carry it
>tell him not to worry about the money
>I backtrack to the service station, pick up some petrol
>come back to him
>get the fuel into his bike
>tell him again not to worry about the money
>he says he owes me big time
>I tell him the best way to thank me is to just do the same and help out a rider at the side of the road

"Reason 1: I just can't seem to kill the thing.

I bought her for £150 taxed and tested to use as a work horse because she can go 100 miles on less than 4 litres of petrol. And for a while she was just used as a souless vehicle to save money with...but then things slowly changed.
I constantly abuse the poor thing, I ride her as fast as she'll go down muddy lanes and when things wrong, we leave the road enter the ditch or hedge and with any luck smash our way out legs flailing and continue the journey. There's no worrying about broken fairings, bent forks or scratched paint. You just keep on riding.
I strap anything I can to her that needs moving. I've carried 32 inch Tv's, fire wood, scaffolding, welders. Once when my mates C90 with no engine needed transporting, I took the wheels off and carried it on the back of my C90 to his house. Try carrying a BMW GS1200 on the back of another GS1200!!!
People laugh when I say that my maintenance schedule is once a week I put petrol in it haha. But apart from changing the engine oil every 1000 miles, that's it. I've never lubed a control cable, greased a nipple or even washed her. Sometimes I put some engine oil on the chain but when it's only £15 for chain and sprockets....it doesn't matter if I don't."

Canada, BC.

I think my car license was like $70 total to make the card and everything, but the motorcycle tests are free the first time you do it to encourage you to actually study for the exam and not just wing it. Each time after that is I think $15.
>>
>>17003624
>changing the engine oil every 1000 miles
why does it vary so much from bike to bike? Mine is 7500 miles and it's a sport bike not meant for endurance.
>>
>>17003632
Fucking hell.
I mean it's not really expensive here in the states, but free is always better.
And out tests are free, but you pay a fee for the license, or at least the states I was in.
>>
>>17003632
How the fuck does being free encourage you to study? It's the fucking opposite. The cheaper something is, the less you dedicate yourself towards it.
>>
>>17003640
Mine is every 10k km, or 15k it don't care.

Last proper service was 60k km ago. It still goes like it's new.
>>
>>17003643
Free the first time so if you pass you're on your way without dropping anything into it.
>>
>>17003640
>why does it vary so much from bike to bike?
at one point he rode for over a 1000 miles with no engine oil due to a broken pump cog, and it just kept going...

small older style honda based engines call for new oil every 1000 miles, but many people put new oil in every 1000km for some reason.

it also only takes 1L of oil at a time, and smaller engines are expected to be working pretty hard 90% of the time
>>
>>17003642
if it makes you feel any better we get completely ass fucked by insurance. I just recently paid $500 for 3 months.

Government here makes a shitload of money off of insurance, parking, tolls, tickets, etc. so they want as many people driving as possible and it shows. The driving is just ridiculous; people pull directly in front of you, rarely use turn signals, text and drive constantly, etc.

If you ever want to fear your life, take a quiet bike on a drive through Richmond where all the Asians live.
>>
>>17002749
Is that the tricity 155?
It's looks fun becasue it's give you the mobility of a scooter with much much more grip.
And it's in the width of a regular scooter
>>
>>17003679
Used to go to school with a guy that went from a sportbike to one of those and he said it was actually fun. Can lean surprisingly far and it's really nice in the city and slow moving traffic.
>>
>>17003670
Oh, I used to live in WA near the border.
First time I want to Canada, I was like the fuck are all the asian doing here.
But I know the driving to an extent.
Still isn't worse than mexico tho. Fuck those people, and fuck the fact you can't even get gas down there with out fear of ruining your bike.
>>
>>17003690
>I was like the fuck are all the asian doing here.
Mostly ruining our housing market and driving Maserati's they got for their sweet 16.
>>
How do I know if I have to much air pressure?, I'm feeling my tires are too hard.
Is it because I filled air pressure when the tires were hots after riding?
just today I felt a little skid in a turn and I wasn't even lean that much
>>

Husaberg up to 2008 is oil ever 5 hours... even casual road riding... the oil becomes dirty...

The engine has 1 compression ring, shares the oil with the gearbox.

I had a KLX250 before, could ride 5k KM on that oil and it came out cleaner than the Husaberg after 5 hours.

And I regularly rode the KLX on the highway at 10k RPM for an hour at a time.
>>
>>17003707
I thought it was kinda funny.
Walked into a mcdonalds and I was the only white guy in there. The rest were asian.
I don't mean to take light if they're actually fucking shit up tho. But you gotta see where I was coming from.
>>
>>17003715
I ride a low stressed bike, with 3 different oil locations: engine, gearbox and drive shaft. Can pour in any motor oil in, doesn't matter if it's for bikes or not.

After 15k km it still comes out pretty clean.

My dad's 1200GSs motor oil even comes out the same colour pink as it went in, even the exact same amount after 10k km.

I mean, they are actually fucking shit up but it's fine I don't want to live here anyways, just here for fun for a couple years. It's mostly the ones that just stay in China instead of living here though. The street I live on is super chinese, most stores hardly speak english. It's kind of fun to randomly walk into them and look around though, and the groceries/meat can be had for really cheap.

Recently just got some incense from a store up the road and the guy just told me "Lucky!" and smiled so I'm guessing they're supposed to bring luck. Or maybe that's one of the only words he knows so he says it to every white person.

Sometimes they just won't help me because I'm white but that's mostly the East Asians.

Pic is just up the road from me, and it's not chinatown, just a part of the city.

Try a six-point socket and a large cheater pipe. Since it must come off, the more leverage you use the more control you have.

I see a proper shop in pic related, so if you need to stop the round shafty bit from spinning consider aluminum vee blocks in a vise.

You can also face it bolt side up, fill with penetrant and leave it for a couple days.

Anti-seize that bitch on reassembly.

Gas is pretty expensive here. My 2.7l fortuner costs about $83 to fill up from empty. And there are often lines although gas stations are plentiful because the gov't allocates most of the fuel import permits to diesel.

It's actually a rather sophisticated oil cooling system in a traditional package. The oil system is semi-dry sump which flows beaucoup oil volume. Rather like an oil-boiler Suzuki in effect and without a radiator. It's a neat design.

It's sold as "air cooled" for classic goodness and due to lack of external radiators unless you add one as a kit. Polaris wisely made that easy for owners in hot climates. Their lubrication/cooling system beats Harley easily.

Harley overheating is a common issue the Thunderstroke doesn't have. Indian have some impressive engines.
