Thanks for answers to my light query. As a reward a pretty road and a nice view it leads to.
By the by, wifey and I are likely moving back to JP near the end of the year. The Goat will have to find new roads with new doggos and wifeys. Keep your peepers out August/September.
>>16719392
Otay! Are you shipping the little Goat back or are are you keeping 'er around? I will.. gladly house the Goat in the meantime (;
Seems like an appropriate time to relive this maymay.
Well you started the thread with my picture so I guess I'll add myself to the map...
>>16719325
would it be worth tracking down a rooftop tent to adapt to my trucks pipe rack?
With luck, I'll have a new batch of pictures of innawoods Ouray a few months prior to the move.
>>16719409
Not coming back, so it's sell and move on. Will look for a true Jimny when we get back to Nipponland. Used to ride in my homies Jimny... Part of the reason I got the Goat.

That rack would need serious work to accomodate a tent

Those bulbs should be more than enough for your purposes and you can always upgrade when / if you need stronger. Two should also be enough.
Also, I'm going to slightly autise a bit with the red light:
Wavelength of the light is indirectly proportional to the refractive index (how much the light scatters and diffuses into nothing). With the equation, the longer (larger) the wavelength (the more red it is), the less it will scatter. This means it pierces harder than blue lights do. Dry air has natural refractive index (how much it inhibits the travel of light) and so does water.
The downside of red light is that it creates heat beacuse you can never pinpoint the exact wavelength of light you can create. You create a range of light. So if you want to generate 600nm light, you have to generate something ilke 450-800nm of light. And when you do, it generates a lot of waste heat.
LEDs get around this by shifting the light spectrum to 250-550 as this anon shows: >>16719199. This also means it doesn't pierce as well but saves a tremendous amount of energy by only generating blue light.
>>16719481
The biggest problem with that rack is its way too wide. Next biggest problem.is its way too high.
My 4runner doesn't have sway bars, and those things weigh a good 150lbs. You'll definitely notice it up there but if you're a decent fabricator and have access to a welder, you can theoretically make anything work
I added a couple leafs into the 63" Chevy's I'm running in the rear so I hope it stiffens it up enough or I'll have to throw some airbags in for highway use.
>>16719481
These are my two main camping buddy's trucks for reference on how their tents are set up.
The only reason the old pickups rack is so high, is because he needed it to be a good height for his Tacoma as well because he swaps it between trucks
This was the last trip I spent in a ground tent and these two persuaded me that I needed the Tepui

Are you trying to run 24v?
12v batteries can be had at a decent price from Sam's Club, and I've found that 12v is more than adequate to run any sort of electronics or lighting. They even make electric coolers that are pretty energy efficient to keep food cold. My uncle is a long-haul trucker so he lives in the 12v world.
I don't think I'd try electric heat, the energy requirements are too high to run off battery alone, and if you're going to idle the engine that makes tons of heat on it's own.

Nice. When I was building my lab, scrap lumber meant free wood. Probably saved $2000 that way. Must be a really nice help in Edmonton, too.
Also, anon (and edmonfag). If you were asking me, my bumper cost me $800 bare steel made by the local (my local) fabricator. ARB costs too much in mapleland but would be a good choice if you're a burger and especially if you're in 'Straya. The winch I got $300 Tundra Tested cheapest option on sale but would recommend instead going with the Warn or others when they're on sale and you have a Jewpon (that they always release).
Where are you located and what are you thinking of doing?
>>16720481
I never actually got to enlistment out of cadets. Spent two summers as a drill commander until I started being so lazy they kicked me out.
I now just larp innawoods instead of being forced by the NCOs to undergo 2 day sleep deprivation training in which they would dress up as ghosts and trigger your sleep induced delerium. then wake you up at 4am yelling UP TWO UP TWO so your instincts kick in and get bumrushed by the platoon behind you. MREs ruined egg omelettes for me FOREVER.
Anyway, I am not doing 24v as it would make my life needless complicated. I just want to drive down to south Michigan so that FODGE guy can maybe doing a wiring job on Taynger and save me $500 on my dual 12V battery setup.
>>16720511
I'm the dude with pic related ranger and I was thinking about getting the superlift but I think just armoring up and putting 32s on for some more trail capability.
>>16720511
Jesus christ was that boot camp or just cadet BS? In the AF our boot camp was basically building your ability to follow inane instructions to the letter, in high stress situations.
>save me $500 on my dual 12V battery setup
What are you trying to do? Depending on the complexity of your setup, you should be able to rig up dual batteries with:
>battery isolator
>relay
>in-dash voltmeter
>switch
>small length of 00 gauge wire
>6 gauge wire
>wire lugs
Shouldn't run you much more than $200 for the whole setup, including a big "commercial" battery from sam's club.
The reason I'm so interested is because I've been considering doing something similar with my Pathfinder.
>>16720573
$250 battery (maybe 500 deep cycle)
$400 300A diode relay, switch operated OR:
$550 500A relay with sensor when B1 is on low life
$100 with appropriate wires and switch placement inside the cab
$200 batter mount shopped out of steel
That's $1500 together if I choose the 500A system. OTherwise, it's just under $1200. I was hoping to go down to the Fodge guy in Michigan so he can save me on the diode relays and I could buidl my own steel cage for the battery. Maybe even if I built a faraday cage around it, it'll be EMP proof for MAXIMUM LARP AUTISM.
With those sleep deprivation training, we were told we'd go on a nice little barrack trip for 3 days shooting and doing drill. But instead it was 1 day of unpacking and 2 days of innawood officer hunting. Fuck were were only cadets.
CFB Trenton treated us much nicer, though. Spaghetti bacon MREs were the shit. So were those packages of coffee that no one mixed into water. I remember snorting half the packages just to stay awake from the pain of my nose.
Good times.
>>16720537
For a second I thought you were Edmonton Ranger.
But superlift would be annoying on the torsions. So just do what I did with 32s, armour, and all.

500A relay system comes with a bunch of automated computer gizmos like circuit breaks and multiple fuses + sensors. I think the main benefit is its availability for the backup battery to be charged to completion and circuit disconnect after it senses full charge. The second would be the automatic PNP + gate that senses main battery drainage (in the case of using a fridge or a winch) and will automatically engage the backup battery. The 300A system does that but without the transistors as it just replaces it with a switch.
Both these systems comes most of your items but in a large case that does not need to be assembled for that pricing. Plus things in Canadia are generally more expensive just because we will pay.
When are you thinking of buying those items? I still have to get my front lift done and will need these systems for (hopefully) May.
If I were to build one myself, it'd incorporate >>16723178 with a bunch of toher stuff. But I do NOT have the ENG knowhow to do this shit... But I do know a specific person in Northern Michigan (if he's reading this right now;)

I'd probably be building it here in the next month or two (barring outside circumstances), so I'll keep you posted.
Over 9000 hours in MS Paint has yielded the attached pic, the basic idea of my planned setup.
The toggle switch either attaches or isolates the aux battery from the rest of the vehicle's electrical system.
The voltmeter is there to make sure you don't discharge your aux battery too far.
The idea is that you turn on the switch after starting the car to charge the aux battery, or turn it on before starting if your battery has run flat and you need a boost to start the car.

It is illegal, most jeep guys just don't care. You should try going out into any California desert where it might as well be day light so many guys have lights on.
>>16723631
The fuck are you talking about.
You're just taking the alternator output, and splitting it with two giant diodes. The two sides are not connected due to the way a diode works.
>>16723986
I'm asking you how you would do various applications with the battery. My thought was that having two batteries in the circuit 24/7 isn't good so asked you how to do the various switches needed.
For an RV, it's difference since you have various other drains going as you're driving, right?
>>16724016
Mate.
It's like having a battery charger that's plugged into your car charging a second battery/ bank.
That's what a alternator does, it puts out 12v.
Split that with diodes, and you have two segregated charging outputs.
You don't need to even think about it, just do it.

That's a negative, boss. Unless you like wasting tons of energy in the form of heat.

That's just how it is. You're only talking alternator current of 90A or so unless you are a fuck up.
This is literally the industry standard way. And it's this way because it works.
If you don't like it, mount a second alternator, and charge your second battery from it.

Decals by the dozen. There ended up being more than what you see on the pic. Quadratec, extreme offroad, etc. Not even the free ones you get with larger orders, he went out of his way to get larger ones.
A nametag-style decal along the hood "Papa jeep"
Cheap tube bumpers instead of the seriously beef rear bumper that had been tied into the frame and everything.
in general, spending money on making it look 'neat' without actually getting it running (tires, windshield frame, tune-up parts, etc.)
It ended up sitting in his garage for a couple of years because he would just beg all of his friends to come over and work on it while he sat there and watched. he also didn't feel like learning anything about carbs or actually timing the engine properly, so it sat 99% of the time.
>>16727881
Yeah, he rattlecanned the grille, which was probably the cleanest part of it, just so it would look "tougher".

Who here has tried fitting four people into an extended/access cab pick-up truck?
The good thing about the Ranger / Bx000 series is that people are seated sideways. That essentially means really big leg space as long as you don't mind someone's foot in your crotch.
>>16728145
I've fit 4 in the Taco before. With mine the fold-down seats face forward meaning the front seats have to move as far forward as possible so the rear passengers have enough room to spread their legs around the seat in front of them
>>16728145
When I was 16 or 17, we managed to cram 6 high schoolers into the cab of my XLT Ranger.
Me driving, 2 dudes in the jump seats, one girl on my lap and the other two up front.
Side note: If you ever play hide the sausage in the ranger, lay the passenger seat back and have the girl lay on it, and kind of position your legs in the passenger footwell. You can hit a pretty good angle like that.

>1. I want to string up the forest with party lights. I wonder if they offer 50ft strands of 12v led party lights?
Just get 120v LED ones, they use like no power. Cheap inverter and you're good to go.
Sure it's not as efficient, but it's way cheaper than trying to find 12v party lights.
>>16730100
No! No no no no no no no.
You see, my truck already has a 120v system in it. If I'm in the store to buy an inverter I hold off until I get the proper inverter to power such a circuit. That also means I will have to upgrade my alternator, and possibly move to a dual alternator setup. Then I will need the battery bank. Then comes ripping up the interior and rewiring everything to my liking.
With all of that ahead of me I will just blow off making a party forest until the truck is done.
If I get 12v party lights there is a remote chance it could happen.
Speaking of which... Tay! You hear anything back from that guy about wiring up an aux battery yet?

Anyway, enough of this /r9k/ tier bullshit
>>16730054
You slowroll through the country as you stop off into towns. It's a common thing here. You're doing like 120 in 80 zones passing tractor trailers on the left through dashed lines. Then you hit a small town with a stop sign going from 120 > 80 > 50 > 0.
Then you slow roll "right past the general [store] and down to the end of the strip". Before you take off for the highway again. Also see: barn parties.
>>16730100
I wanted to string up Christmas lights around the bed of Taynger but I've heard stories where they literally tag you down as a distraction for the rest of the drivers. Shame.
It's pretty easy to find hundreds of yards of Xmas lights though. Just look for ads on CL for "spring cleaning" finds and you can acquire like 500m of lights in 2 weeks from people just looking to get rid of their boxes.
