Is there a current production car that is suited for offroading? Off the top of my head I think for offroading you want a solid drive axle (or is it independent?)

Depends on what exactly you're doing with it. "offroading" is very general.

ok huys im going to college up north (on lake superior) this fall and i want to make my stock xj (4.0, 4x4, auto) better in the snow/ light trails
ibe never offroaded it before which is why im so hesitant to mod the fuck out of it, theres pretty much zero trails within an hour of my house ;_;
i have a couple grand saved up but i dont want to spend more that 1500
so far im thinking:
new alternator (bought not installed yet)
new ball joints upper and lower
new rear brake drums/shoes
block heater
full coolant/heater core flush
snow tires? (235/75/r15)
>>
Talk me out of buying a Montero
>>
>>16708453
What the fuck. Why not take it up before Autumn? Also. Confederation College?

Where are you located? There have to be some trails if you live in North America. Or a forest.
>>
>>16708487
im driving it up there in august butim spending all winter up there
currently live in detroit metro, college is northern michigan university
>>
>>16708511
If you cross the border into Onterrible, I can show you a few trails near London. But it'll have to be past May.
Bring Scotch and Founders Beer and that Suburban guy.

Anyway. The most important part for your XJ is a lift (coil upgrade is good) and larger tyres / wheels. Since its bone stock right now and you have time, I would strongly recommend waiting for an offroad ready XJ to come on the market and buy it for $3500-$5000 instead. This would save you money and add-on time for your upgrades.

Fuck... these threads move so fast nowadays I have trouble keeping up haha. Work has gone from a shit show to a downright fanfuckingtastic Clusterfuck. Between a bank audit, computer problems, short staffing, a new very problematic customer, and contractors going rogue I can handle one, maybe 2 NOT ALL FUCKING 5!

I think I may just say fuck it and bite the bullet and take Murph to a mechanic instead of fixing everything myself and dealing with distractions with work all the time.

>>16708453
For anything in Michigan a stock XJ is fine when it comes to snow/light trails. It looks like the biggest thing you are focusing on is maintenance which is what I would be doing too if I were in your shoes. As far as tires go I would recommend the KO2s. Meme tire I know but they last, which is good for students haha. Biggest thing to work on is getting experience driving off road and you should do well.

You on the map anon?

Yeah they don't do well in fog and rain and all that, but luckily in SoCal we don't get too much of that

>>16709600
By "fog lights" I meant my old turn signal housings that I converted into fog lights. They kinda worked but they made better DRLs than actual foglights (not that I use DRLs in the first place)
>>
>>16709626
>They kinda worked but they made better DRLs than actual foglights
Well of course. That's like saying a Prius makes a better sedan than it does a box van. It doesn't matter how you use it, it's still not a box van. Fog light refers to the pattern created by the light. If it doesn't create a fog beam, then it's not a fog light. Fog light doesn't just refer to an extra pair of lights in the bumper that you turn on when you have trouble seeing.

I haven't had time to figure it out yet taco bro, I don't have plans this coming weekend but that's too short of planning for me, then the weekend after i'm going to TDS, and after that valley of the moon trail with a taco bro with 1tons and 40's. So basically I can't do a meet up for another month.

On another note, fuck phones and planned obsolescence. That shit pisses me off, I've had an s4 for years, and just about 3 months ago I've had to get a new one every month because every single one of them would stop charging. Also fuck apple.

I concur with the notion that a lot of people really underestimate the ability of 2wd. I bring back my old case of one of my old Burbs where I busted my 4wd after I may or may not have gotten carried away and may or may not jumped it. Even with no 4wd and bald street tires I could get it pretty far, EVEN in low traction stuff like mid and sand. It all comes down to the driver, and knowing where and when to build/conserve your momentum.

Gonna look kickass! Limb risers would actually be super easy for me. I could just run cables up from the brush guard to the mounds on the roof for the old emergency lightbar.

An awning is in the works, I just need to figure out how to mount it. It looks like they mount on the roof rack cross rails but I don't have any and getting them may be complicated due to the AC unit up top.

Jury is still out on fender guards. Leaning towards them but i would do it after replacing the front bumper which isn't happening for a while.

TRACKIE PAL! YOU'RE BACK!! What's Trackalalacking!? Also seems like you missed the samurai copypasta. Does anyone have it to share with the goatherd?

I would actually get a tracker since the thing's like one tonne but they're not very common up here. Also the weird issue of having too small of a wheelbase, heh.
What a nice picture, though. Here's one for you.

I know there are a few new A/T tires on the market with a "W" tagged on to the name, like Cooper ATW(?). Basically an AT tire with extra siping and a softer compound so you get good snow traction and some of the durability of a true AT.

I run General Altimax Arctic on my 4Runner (in a narrower than stock 245/75R16 profile) and they work fantastic both on slick highways as well as on snowy/icy trails.

A set of tire chains and a tow strap are good additions to your list. But you're absolutely right to place an emphasis on maintenance items, good on you.
>>
>>16708446

Front end suspension and drivetrains are shared, but the Tacoma uses a US-only C-channel frame that in northern climates has a bit of a poor reputation in regards to rust. The 4Runner uses a full boxed frame shared with the "medium duty" Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 90 (as well as Hilux Surf in 185 body style ie JDM 4Runner). Tacoma uses traditional pickup leaf springs out back, 4Runner has an excellent coil-spring 5 link rear end (smoother ride, great articulation).

The prior gen 4Runner shared its frame (fully boxed) with the Toyota Pickup, both using the heavier duty global Hilux frame.

I wish I could unfuck it.
It's a '90 YJ that originally had the 2.5, 5 speed. Now it's got a rebuilt sbc 350 with an edelbrock carb and noname headers. Still has the np231, d30 and d35.
Should I:
Buy a clean tub from down south, considering the frame is in A+ shape, or repair the bubba'd tub that's on it?
The windshield mount corners rusted out, none of the doors shut like they should, and it has a pretty skookum rollbar reinforcement.
I'd also like to find another red grille. This one was sprayed black.

I'd just wait. Or you could toss up a CL advert to do a swap with someone. Their solid for your tube+$200 or something.
Someone might do it if they have a jeep they aren't driving because of kids or something. If anything, you might get someone who wants to buy your bumper so you can have a few extra sheckles to go buy / swap your solid bumper.

Looking at old solid jeep bumpers and wish I could get pricing like that for my trucc.

If I could go back in time i would have saved all the saleen specific bits and bought a nice rust free 4 door and made a clone.

You don't have to be too rich to do shit like that. You just gotta funnel your money into that kinda stuff because you really love it.

Too lazy to put myself on the map haha. Roof tent was the best investment i've made for camping yet.

I was eating noodles for a month straight after I bought the thing. I thought of it as a gift to myself for landing a fully paid apprenticeship. I had to sell a few things to be able to afford it, but it is so worth it. It really hurt knowing i spent almost 4x what i paid for the truck on a tent though lol

I rolled this blue truck a couple years ago and basically took everything drivetrain related and swapped it into the grey truck with the RTT on it a couple posts up, and I've been screwing with that 4runner ever since.

Would love to head over to Colorado and Oregon too from Toronto. Or maybe Alaska... Too bad I'm wagecucked by like two different jobs.

You have a dual battery setup for overlanding? I'm about to put one in on Taynger next in order to deal with this.

Once i get my passport, I'd love to take a few weeks off and travel backroads through washington all the way down to the oregon coast. I hear there's awesome wheeling down there.

4runner engine bay lacks space for dual batteries as i have the 3.0 V6. I'm hoping to have a diesel landcruiser in the next couple years and that will most likely have dual batteries. I'm also planning out an expedition trailer that I'd like to build as well which i would run my auxilliary power out of, but that's far into the future after I acquire said landcruiser. I have an idea in my head of using a toyota rear axle and putting a pulley on the pinion flange up to an alternator that's tucked away to recharge the system, but I'm worried that it'll cause too much drag and get hung up on everything lol
>>
>>16714632
I'm also trying to see if i can make an Eaton M90 supercharger work with my engine as a cool project for my apprenticeship, but I don't think I can adjust my fuel enough without going to a standalone system like megasquirt

alright guys. do I do 22x10 and 37x12.50, or 22x12 and 37x13.50?

and does anyone here happen to have experience with both the Toyo R/T and the Toyo M/T?

I know my truck is a big flashy attention whore that looks like it belongs in a mall parking lot but I like being able to take it everywhere and I'm wondering if there's a point that I could go "too wide" as far as wheels and tires? it sees 4 seasons of weather, snow, ice, dirt, mud, rain, pretty much everything but sand. I really want to go with the wider setup because I love the look of huge, meaty tires, but will it be detrimental to anything besides fuel economy?

Wider tires wear out your steering faster because you have to turn more contact surface.

Honestly you could even run the 13.5s on the 10'' wheel and be fine too. I run 12.5s on a 8'' wheel as sort of a poor mans beadlock when i air down

I'd shove mine under my rear wheelwells and run the cables over. If you are selling, I would actually consider buying that 4runner and driving it across BC to Toronto. Keep me in mind if these threads are still alive.

If the 4runner isn't what I'd imagine, I'd probably just end up selling it on the local classifieds. That would even save me money on renting a vehicle, too so it could easily be worth it for me.

There's this electrical engineer I've been talking to about getting a dual battery setup. I gotta sleep now because gotta wake up for s n o w r o l l i n g >>16712693 in 7 hours.

well hello :3

>>16714677
I'm currently running 35x12.50s on 20x9s, so I figure I'd be going one inch wider on both the wheel and the tire, and going two inches taller on both as well so it would essentially be the same. looking at my current setup, I'd like the wheels to be a little less "sunken in" if that makes sense, or I want the sidewall to be a little closer to straight but not quite, so that it still protects the wheel some.

I keep forgetting that American Force offers a 22x11 size as well, pic related is the same amount of lift I'll be installing with a 37x13.50 M/T on a 22x11, but the catch is that all of AF's 22x11 wheels are 0 offset and his are Fuels which I believe are -24 or so which would put them out an inch farther.

After 4 months of ownership... It's finally time to get this thing it's WoF, (which is a $50 sticker that lets the police know it's not falling apart)

I have stuck a new radiator, new transmission, high flow thermostat, put the electric fan to a manual switch, done my front inner axle seals, added a snorkel, 2'' lift, relocated a washer bottle... all within my hour lunch breaks at work, except the trans which I took 2 days off and done it on the 2 post hoist. Took me 16 hours to drop a trans out of my donor XJ and chuck it in this one, not bad for an amateur I'm told by our mechanic

And finally it's ready! I look forward to taking some action shots as I beat the shit out of it

Expedition overland feels like they are larping some kind of military mission. I watch alot of travel blogs and the best ones are the budget build, barely any planning, fly by the seat of your pants type of travel.

I like it when Ronnie does the modified episodes. The one with the german dudes and the montero or pajero I think. Half the build was with ebay specials and the rest was duct tape.

Andrew I like because he is more touring and less mudding bro out. Cheap and efficient. Proved that you can overland with a stock Isuzu and simple mods like tires and a canopy.

Check Duratrac walls. D gives that extra reinforcement for cases like rubbing rocks against mud but some anon told me they had side wall issues a while back so be... careful?

I avoided Crap Tyre because apparently they get specialised tyres made for them at 10-25% pricing discounts compared to general offroad supply stores. It could be because of bulk discounts but no way CT has discounts on 32inch + (since no one would be getting them at that rate) without cutting corners.

Besides, my 32s from the offroad store were $240 each (20 more for the D walls instead of the C walls). And the peace of mind is worth the extra bit.

I will tell you this. Your Bilsteins + duratracs would probably be more comfortable than KO2s and especially Coopers.

>>
>>16718809
Too large for technical trails. But since you're not going technical then as far as owning the vehicle:
Gas guzzlers, prone to rust, almost all of them are very rusty, unsafe at speeds above 70kmph.

Have you tried a Jeep or Toyota of the same year?
>>
>>16718835
Considered, but I really like squarebodies. Possible alternatives are Broncos of same era or even Scouts if rust isn't awful. The extent of off-roading would be fire roads and muddy trails in hilly terrain
>>
>>16718855
Broncos, K5s, Ramchargers and IH Scouts all suffer from the points I listed above.

Thanks for the insight, but I think I'm set on the K5. Just trying to justify it I guess. Ideally a two tone 73-80 for the round headlights is what I'm going for, gotta start checking CL on the daily as they go pretty fast
>>
>>16718928
>Too large meaning too wide.
Most guys running technical trails are running the same track width. You know that, right?
You're more likely to bang up a corner in a tight turn but it's not going to prevent you from running the trail.

It's actually annoying waiting for or being in a vehicle that needs to do a 12 point turn to get around a tree or rock on a trail

How do you fellas feel aboot light bars? Thinking of installing one on the Goat. Probably a rectangular one (as opposed to standard long bar). Mount above front bumper? Roof? Hood?

Advantages to location or type? Install concerns (not a fan of wiring/electrical stuff)?

I've always hated LED lights. I've found that their light is less illumination as it is just plain bright. I'm sure there's a technical term, maybe a difference in candelas and lumens?
As in, their light illuminates, but it doesn't really help see anything.

Makes sense to me.

Anyway, those chink bars get the work done. Otherwise, I would avoid LED bars because of potential fog and blowing in snowstorms in your general location. One or two bitch lights would do 5x more efficiently than a light bar plus it has the added benefit of being moveable.
Why not toss on some foglights like Taynger? $150 for 75W KCs.

Welcome back, doggo with weird jeans!

>when you learn to fly and you can't then you just free fall
>>
>>16719040
What makes you feel the need for one? Where are you not getting enough light on trails at night?

Nice and low around the fogs if you need more light right in front of you for obstacles at low speed.

Up top or hood level for lighting up all the trail with the light of a thousand suns.

Side lights near your mirrors for spotting wildlife if a roof mount isn't wide enough.

Most of them are flood beam, so they seem REALLY bright, but you don't get any real distance out of them. Even the ones that are listed as spot beam often make better flood beams than they do spot beams.

The standard lights seem really dim. I'm really only worried about having to bug out from our campsite (often hours away from pavement, sometimes on narrow shelves) in the middle of the night because of weather or injury, etc. Emergency shit, basically. Are you fucking stupid? The width of a vehicle doesn't effect the turning radius as much as the wheelbase does. The K5 has a 106.5" wheelbase, which is pretty short, it'll turn fine, 4 door JKs are another 9-10" longer wheelbase so suck a dick.

Your opinions are shit, this is coming from someone who wheeled the shit out of a squarebody suburban on 41s. I also own a K5 which I'm building now, there are so few trails you won't fit down, most you "won't" fit is because you're scared to scratch the paint.

Full size FTMFW, wheeling anything smaller then a full width truck/SUV is for pussies...

>It seems like colors are also pretty washed out when they're lit by LED headlights
Most LEDs are around 6000k (blue tint) which is the worst color tint you could have for visibility. Green, Yellow, and Amber are good for visibility.
>>
>>16719199
Would tinting the lens fix that? Or does it not work like that?
>>
>>16719228
It would cause the light to be dimmer. You're not adding those wavelengths back, just cutting down what's already there. i.e. Tinting can only make something darker, not produce more light.
>>
>>16719199
Yeah LED shift is hard for reading and water as a result. This is because whenever light is generated, so is heat (and thus infra-red light spectrum). LEDs go around this issue by shifting to short wavelength and not generating heat to save electrical usage at the cost of piercing and other aspects. Note: blue skies, blue oceans. Red fire.
This makes it pierce better through fog and storms (which is just a type of water)

>>16719228
Tinted lenses only affects light that is being applied. It's a filter. If there's no red light to filter through, then a tint will do nothing.

You're better off with those KCs and PISS lights there, little goat.
>>
>>16719228
Tinting the lens changes the color by filtering out certain wavelengths, reducing overall output. For visibility it's not a very good means of changing color.
>>
>>16719242
Oh okay that makes sense. It's a
filter so it just cuts down on what's already there instead of shifting the overall wavelength
