sae is inches.
how is it not imperial?
you measure your sockets in inches, it makes no god damned sense.
especially when you realise an sae socket will kinda almost fit most metric bolts just enough to strip them.

shit like you have to use a 21/64 on an 8mm socket and it is .3 of a mm too big.

>>16655694
I genuinely challenge you to find a bolt that uses a 21/64 head, and the associated socket in use anywhere.

Bong here, we use metric for almost everything nowadays. The only things I can think of that aren't are:

>Weight - It's about an even mix of stone/lbs and kilos.
>Pints of stuff - Everything else is in litres, but milk and beer is still pints.
>Height - Still feet and inches, probably because it's easier for people to visualise.
>Long distances - Miles
>Speed - Mph

Oh, and for some reason, industrial tubing thicknesses/diameters are often still imperial.
>>
>>16655719
none in merica will, the point is that is what most americans will use on an 8mm bolt to strip it though.
>>
>>16655731
or i guess they might hammer a 5/16 onto an 8m...?

No, most Americans when working on a Japanese bike use metric and use 10mm for all but two bolts because everything is 10mm.

>>
>>16655945
You'll probably be fine to loosen the left one, but you might need a spanner on the other side to hold the opposing nut, to prevent the axle from just spinning.

As for the hose, you should be fine as long as it's not being sprayed through a nozzle on a 'jet' setting or anything.

>>16655957
It's entirely subjective, but I'd say that a 650 dual sport is more versatile, and will almost definitely accelerate faster in all gears. Obviously, the 300 might offer a more refined experience/engine character, and be happier on the highway (for a given value of happy), but that's more or less where the clear advantages end.

Personally, I'd either pick the dual sport, or look at 500s if you still want sport styling/sportish ergonomics.

Yeah, hence the Carhartt jacket + pants. A Icon vest wouldn't fit over or under my current moto jacket.

Idk I ride a KLR650 and commute on it and full moto armor would be excessive.

So im leaning toward hard armor worn over or under normal people clothes. Not going to run errands or go to work wearing racing leathers on a shitty KLR.

I have nice medical insurance so I just mostly don't want to die or be crippled. If I lose a little booty meat in a slide cause I'n wearing Dickies instead of motorcycle pants I can live with that.

There's a 2006 ninja 250 for sale an hour out for only $1000, has <5000 miles. Carbs need some work and have a small leak, would it be worth it to fix up and resell? Seems to be in pretty good shape otherwise, I could probably sell it for ~$2000. Or since it's 10 years old should I stay away?

Do you want to ride on road or off road.

Answer that and you've got your choice.

https://youtu.be/FgH91tdUGXI?t=36 and yes a 300 is more than capable enough as a bike to teach you proper road riding.

You can go for a 500 or a 650 if you want (I went for 650) too but a 300 is fine as well.

Mechanic here. There might be enough meat left to use a SIX point socket to unscrew it. If there isn't clearance you might grab it, HARD, with a large visegrip then twist enough to break it free.

If all else fails. you can remove the clutch slave cylinder, place it in a bench vise (protect with a couple pieces of wood, plastic cut from an empty oil can etc) then you'll have ample access to visegrip it.

Use anti-seize on ALL bleeder nipples when reinstalling. Use a SIX point box end wrench on brake nipples in future.

>or i guess they might hammer a 5/16 onto an 8mm.

Never had to force that combo, ever and I've wrenched metric vehicles since 1978.
Sockets are broached with clearance which is why 5/16" fits 8mm, 7/16" fits 11mm, 1/2" fits 13mm, 9/16" fits 14mm etc in NEARLY all cases. There are other interchanges worth knowing so you can conveniently double-wrench using a mixed toolkit or if you don't feel like walking the extra distance to get a tool.

10mm only fits 110mm, 12mm fits 12mm etc.

Real mechanics have no problem seamlessly coping with metric, SAE, Whitworth or anyotherfuckingthing.

Brake nipples are made of chewing gum and commonly seize hard enough to strip with the correct tool. If you disturb your nipple, anti-seize that motherfucker. I do case screws too. Dry threads UNLESS specified by manufacturer (head bolt torque reasons etc) are the devil. Anti-seize or Loctite as appropriate. Corrosion seizes fasteners and both are a barrier to moisture intrusion.

I'd buy it because carbs are easy to rebuild. Check prices in YOUR area because prices are regional. You could turn it in the mid teens with a carb cleaning and that's good money for a simple job.

My carb overhaul kit below. I suggest noobs or casual carb molesters print this list.

Tray to work on, bright LED headlamp with narrow beam, magnifying glass, cheapass SIX point metric 1/4" drive socket set with a screwdriver and spinner ratchet handles, usual small metric combo wrenches, metric "ignition" wrench set, hollow-ground "gunsmith" style screwdriver or similar screwdriver bits, JIS multibit screwdriver, typical multibit screwdriver, set of #60 -90 drill bits for jet drilling, small visegrip to hold bits while spinning jets between thumb and forefinger to drill and debur, RUBBER TIPPED blow gun, a hunk of old throttle cable or bicycle cable (extract one strand as a "jet poker", I don't use welding tip cleaners because they are actually round files), small drill bits and screw extractors for removing EPA mixture plugs, and a five gallon pail I use to soak carbs in undiluted Pine-Sol. I pour the Pine-Sol back into the jug since it's good for a couple or three uses undiluted. You can pour it down the sink and your kitchen will smell like a G.I. party.

Nothing expensive in that list at all. BTW I never use a common wedge-shaped screwdriver on jets.

I use the cheapest carb spray I can find. Walmart toluene works as well or better then ripoff solvents with similar ingredients.

Harbor Freight ultrasonic (vibratory, really) cleaners speed things up and work fine with Pine-Sol. Avoid generic pine oil. Pine-Sol works better.

Hoard all the dead carbs you can stash no matter what bike if you expect to wrench often. Leave them assembled if they are not apart and they make convenient organ donors.

DId you remove the metal EPA plugs over the fuel mixture screws, remove the screws and any metal washers and rubber O-rings?

If that year has a vacuum fuel valve, you can pull the vacuum hose off it and plug with a golf tee or a bolt to check if the vacuum diaphragm leaks. Most valves have a "prime" position. Just turn valve until you get fuel flow with engine off if in doubt.

I hate vacuum fuel valves.

In that case they need a proper cleaning to include removal of the fuel mixture screws because those screws control fuel at idle.

The way to reset them is to GENTLY count the turns (including quarter turns) while BOTTOMING them BEFORE removal. Write this down, example "1 1/4 turns". Then unscrew them over a tray and note if a very small metal washer and a black rubber O-ring fall out. If not, shine a BRIGHT light into the screw hole. I use a paper clip etc with a very short bend at the tip to hook them. About the size of this letter j will do.

If your fuel mixture tip is only tapered, it won't have the washer and ring. if the taper has a flat "step" that's to seal the washer and O-ring. Your manual should have a good illustration.

Rebuild kits don't typically come with the small metal washer, but dealers will have them if you lose one. Used is fine.

When rebuilding, replace the O-rings and if the black Viton needle tip has the slightest defect, the needle and seat too. If it were mine I'd replace the needle anyway. K&L are good kits.

Example. I didn't look for the best price:

Its a VF.

See the little red circle? Your carb will have a similar port, it's sealed at the factory with a little aluminum cap that you have to drill out if they've never been fucked with.

Under the cap, there is a brass needle, spring, small washer, and small rubber o-ring. They all should be removed, and the passage jetted out with carb cleaner then compressed air.

If you didn't do this, the idle circuit is still plugged with gunk, and it won't idle right.

I STRONGLY suggest you study some carb overhaul videos and use a service manual. You should be able to download one.

Once you've done a set properly all future work will be much easier. Don't try to wing it.

Assumption is the mother of all fuckups. Everyone makes a few mistakes. Part of learning and you can dry any tears by the insane amounts of money you save.

This will help for exploded diagrams, but it's a parts catalog, not a service manual.

http://www.carlsalter.com/download.asp?p=1307

Ask if anyone has a factory service manual download link:

http://www.hondashadow.net/forum/72-technical-discussion/

Also try other Shadow forums. You'll find one or close enough eventually.

I own a V-Stronk (stock height, no drop link bullshit here) and a DR650. I can't flat-foot the Stronk but I do well enough on it.

I don't shit on any bikes except cafes and Harleys in general, but that's mostly because of their riders.

I haven't been that brave yet; I only got the thing last year and haven't found such areas here in Iowa yet. CC has a webm about what happens when I go innasands with my DR650 though.

>>
>>16657324
if you were a soldier in an ultralight mechanized unit doing patrols out in the desert, would you be better served by a dual-sport or an adventure bike?
>>
>>16657370
>ultralight
you answered your own question
>>
>>16657344
I doubt the Shinko 705 would handle the sand very well. It does OK on the dirt and gravel roads I've been on but soft dirt it just bogs right down.

>>16657337
I have had one good conversation with a Harley rider out here; the rest either didn't bother to waddle over and looked away or said the usual "you wish you bought a Harley dontchah?" The cafe riders out here are all in the city and do very short rides. I don't hipster so there's that, too.

>>16657370
>ultralight mechanized
You'd be in tactical side-by-sides at the smallest. If you were on a bike, it would be something tiny and quiet and most of your gear would be on another vehicle while you went to play scout.
>>
>>16657370
>patrols
Dirt bike. But nothing in the military is efficient and light so probably adv.

>>
>>16657392
in a mechanized paradigm where your light infantry is rolling around in uparmored humvees and light APC's, "ultralight" still has to account for a fuck ton of gear.
>>16657394
ranger batt has been known to use quads in afghanistan. quads are probably the superior platform in all regards, but i still think that an adv bike serves your average infantry dick better than a light ass dual-sport. you're still hauling around guns, AT4's, etc.
>>
>>16657370
We use little 250 shitbikes that will run off diesel, petrol, whatever you throw at it.
Most comparable to a DR200, dunno what brand, have only seem them from afar.
