Just passed my license, need a first bike, something used, naked bike under 600cc. What do I do about sellers who say "no test pilots"? Is a visual inspection like the one in the sticky and running the engine while stationary enough to determine if I'm buying a lemon, or shoul I even not bother with looking at bikes when I cant test ride them? I'm a total noob and know nothing about mechanics apart from what I read in http://www.clarity.net/~adam/buying-bike.html
>>
>>16652700

>>
>>16652738
>or shoul I even not bother with looking at bikes when I cant test ride them?
This, never test a bike without testing.

That guide looks pretty good.

Really, make sure it's cold and bring someone you trust that knows bikes. Both do a test ride, it's the best way to test a bike and when you're away from the owner you can test some other things without being bothered.
>>

Thanks Anon. I only have one bro who knows about bikes, but he works when I don't, so I'll probably have to do it solo. Anyone here first time buyer of used machine while being a noob? Care to describe the experience?

>Anyone here first time buyer of used machine while being a noob?
I did. Brought my dad with me because it was on the other side of the country, but he stayed in the background and let me figure most out, while he was talking with the owner.

Owner had it in still in his garage, and it was cold.
We started her up, check the oil consumption and how smooth it ran (by blocking the exhaust with your hand).
Then did a 15 minute test ride where I tested the suspension and buttons (25°C with grip heaters on full blast wasn't fun). Felt something weird at certain rpm, but though it was normal.
Bought it and am still happy with it, found the cause of the weird feeling I got, drive shaft was bad. Broke a few months later, but after replacing it the weird feeling was gone.
>>
>>16652787
Thank you. I am gravitating towards honda CB600F or a suzuki Bandit 600. Are those good choices for first bike? I learned to ride and passed on the hornet. Anybody knows what the common faults with these two are? I lurked some forums but couldn't find anything specific.

I'd prefer the Honda because imo looks better, but iunno, the new bandit 1k looks gorgeous
>>
>>16652798
Thanks for the story. Yeah, another thing is I might not detect anything during a test ride due to lack of experience with a variety of bikes, so I'm not sure If I can tell weird from normal. Tfw when no biker friends to bring along...

> first time buyer of used machine while being a noob?
yes, i just recently bought my bike while having only pretty basic knowledge of bikes (but good knowledge of cars)
talk to some friends what to look out for, maybe look up youtube on how to check for certain problems

that said, i bought it from a dealership with 1 year warranty, fresh service and it'll get TÃœV-checked before i take it home
only "test-rode" it on the dyno because the day i bought it we had -5°C and wet, salty roads (^:
>>
>>16652738
>need a first bike
Displacement is a meme. Aim for a bike with sub 70hp and less than 600lbs and you'll be perfectly fine. Past there it's just picking out the type of bike you want.

>What do I do about sellers who say no test rides
Tell them to get fucked and find another seller. You should ALWAYS testride a bike.
>>
>>16652817
I prefer the Honda, too. Thx for the input.

>>16652854
Thanks. I'm considering buying from a dealership, too, although typically the price is much higher since they gotta make a profit.

>>16652856
Nice one, thanks for confirming. I might have been wrong about the whole "no test pilots" thing, it seems like they're people who don't even plan to buy, just want a ride on someone else's bike for fun. I interpreted it wrong.
>>
>>16652871
mine was only 200€ more than the cheapest alternative i could find and that way i'm on the save side - what i forgot to mention: look up long-time reviews of the specific bike you want, as they might have general flaws

alright well #1 thing is you're scurred so you're deathgripping the bars, I need you to stop that, you may be putting too much weight onto the bars as well, it should be a feather touch. Knowledge of the bike you're riding will be handy in diagnosing this problem.

#2 is to just practice your fast idle, clutch slipping and rear brake skills. You basically want your throttle to be locked off and to maintain a consistent RPM for the whole U-turn, try and ride as slowly and as smoothly in a straight line as you can for a bit using the clutch slipping.

#3 is i like to tell people to practice doing donuts or just circles over and over, just spin around and around in one direction getting the circle as tight as possible, eventually you'll get close to the lock of the fork, when this happens and you feel like the bike is going to "drop" you can let out a bit of clutch or let off a bit of rear brake and use the throttle to pick it up, I can do donuts at full lock with the bars not moving a single cm from the stops by just controlling the power to the rear wheel to pick it up and put it down, that's what you should be aiming for.

You will have new brake pads.

Just don't squeeze the brake lever with the Caliper off the disk.
>>
>>16653688
Usually, no problem at all. Just carefully compress the pistons a little if needed to slot the new pads in. As long as your fluid doesn't rise above the 'max' mark on the reservoir, you're good.

As it's a closed system, there shouldn't be any air in it, so as long as you didn't open any of the lines, it's fine. You can easily tell if there's air in the system, because the lever will feel vague and spongy.

QUESTION:
Thinking about taking my Bolt out of winter storage for a quick buzz around town next weekend as temps will be well above freezing.

Was planning on doing an oil change in the spring. Am I better off doing the oil change even though she will be sitting for another month in storage again or would I be fine to run that older oil that has been sitting since November because fuck it?

t. a lazy but paranoid rider
>>
>>16654501
The oil will be fine. Just fill it up after riding with fresh fuel.
>>
>>16654516
That's what I figured, with modern day oil and all. I stabilized the fuel in November and will certainly fill up the tank after the ride. Add another squirt of stabilizer for the month of sitting it will have after?
>>
Went for a whopping 20 km ride today.
>almost freeze hands off because summer gloves
>almost die trying to go 80 over train crossing in 30 zone because no sense of speed anymore
>almost lowside because salt + 30 kmh corner + 80 kmh actual speed
>pay 1,50€ per liter for fuel
And it was still worth it.
>>
>>16654536
>Add another squirt of stabilizer for the month of sitting it will have after?
I never did that and let my bike sit for 2 months. Still ran fine.
>>
>>16654501
literally doesn't matter. conventional wisdom says to do oil changes prior to winterization but it wont make fuck all of a difference. you have to ride it around to warm it up anyways for an oil change so you'll be doing that ride regardless
>>
>>16654537
>pay 1,50€ per liter for fuel

It's €1,55-1,70L here now.
>>
>>16654537
>20 km
I rode further than that on my 2t dirt bike yesterday. Get your shit together anon
>>
>>16654561
True. I was just worried about having it sit again with the "crummy" oil. I just like to be sure about these things for myself and the next owner.
>>
>>16654558
Makes sense. I should have it out of storage for good in mid March so its not too far off.
>>
>>16654566
What the Christ. Last time I rode it was like 1,30, max 1,38 or so. Hope the prices go down a bit once the weather gets better. As if..

>>16654568
Yeah I decided today I desperately need winter gloves. Heated grips only go so far towards keeping your hands warm, they do jack shit if it's sub zero and you're going 100 or so.
>>
>>16654582
It was like this 2 years ago, then it dropped down to "only" 1,35, last month (I believe, haven't paid for fuel in months) it went from 1,55 to 1,75 on the highways.
>>
>>16654582
Yeah winter gloves are pretty cheap and imo better than heated grips.

hey /dbt/
I'm an Ausfag, went for my L's (learner permit) recently, and didn't do so well on them. I had trouble shifting gears, among a few others things. I didn't have any trouble steering or balancing, and I could do the slow riding well enough to pass the required 10 seconds.

I felt anxious on the bike the whole time, and didn't feel confident enough to continue to the second (and final) day of testing, despite passing the test on the first.

Anybody got any tips or pointers? I feel like I would be able to do okay if I could practice somewhere, but obviously that's not a possibility yet.

What is your opinion on the new Rebel? Is it a good first bike?

I'll get some, thanks for the tips. Thing is, it's like half a foot. If I go to a parts store that has it, they usually just give it to you for free for that little amount.

>>16654950
Out of all of those, the ls650 is least likely to give you problems and requires the least amount of work.

Sorry, I'm in Sydney, but I'd suggest registering on netrider forums and asking if anyone will help you out, if I lived down there I'd offer to let you potter around a carpark and give you some tips, I'm sure someone would do the same on the forums. Just post in the welcome lounge or whatever it's called

Then the test must be easy or else it's a conundrum and a waste of money.

When I took the CMSP for my license half the class failed, the ones who failed fell for the "no riding experience necessary" trick.
Everyone who passed already had a permit and had been riding for months.

A permit for what?

You can't ride legally on the road without passing this test, and then you take another test a few months later to get your probationary license.
>>
>>16654887
My friends of my gf repeatedly dropped their bikes and still got their L plates, the 2 day course isn't a test. They just want to ensure your not a danger to yourself or others. IMO fucking up gear shifts isn't enough to stop you getting your Ls

well you won't have the satisfaction of refurbishing a shitbike into something like that. so get it if you don't feel like wrenching

When I was there, dropping the bike was an instant fail, and I nearly got kicked off because I came within two inches of brushing my crash guard against the back wheel of the bike to my side.

Also the class running at the same time on the other half of the range, that was on the second day had 4/6 people fail.

Point taken. I thought about upgrading my camera to make some webbums of my daily ride to work, but then realised that it's basically 5 minutes of greenery followed by endless grey, grey or grey stuff.
