Hey I've got an r3 and a ninja 500 with a cracked engine from a crash a few months ago, and I want to get it up and running as a secondary bike, but I'm not sure what tools I'll need or anything else.

If I bought a used engine for it, would I need any specialized tools to install it other than basic sockets?

The battery hasn't been charged or used for five months, is it safe to say I need to get another one?

Also, what can I use for a cheap engine lift, since I've read the weight needs to be relieved from the frame to be removed.

>Have a welder patch it up

I'm a welder and I'm going to have to say fuck that. If this was some rare or hard to find motor, then maybe it would be worth it. It's not though. It's a fucking ninja 500. Buy a block off ebay and call it a day.

https://www.google.com/search?q=ninja+500+case&oq=ninja+500+case&aqs=chrome..69i57.4971j0j1&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#q=ninja+500r+case&tbm=shop&spd=9851188422845451326

There'd be so much weld prep and grinding and you'd have to worry about warping the case at the seam where the two halves meet. you'd spend more on labor than you would on another case.

Also read this for more info on splitting the cases

http://www.dansmc.com/split_crankcase.htm
>>
>>16490710
Oh FUCK is that your work?
>>
>>16490710
how much prep is needed for that? ive seen more than a few tig jobs on cast aluminum that were far more daunting than that and they went smooth.
this is also coming from someone who doesnt tig weld at all and hates dealing with aluminum.
hell trolley got his triple welded up, not sure on cost though
>>
>>16490710

I was thinking about doing this, is a crank case replaceable or is it something that needs to be paired with an engine, like pistons and cylinders?
>>
>>16490731
in a jap bike theyre interchangeable.
ktm had a stint where you couldnt just get new parts and expect them to fit
>>
>>16490725

No I wish. They're sexy welds though.
>>
>>16490726

Very thorough degreasing and wipe it down with acetone. You can't run a nice bead over oil. Then you would put a piece of aluminum in to act as a filler and run a bead fusing the filler to the case. Grind it down flush and fill in any dips. It's not too difficult, but you're going to have to pay a good welder $100+ to do it which doesn't really make sense when you just buy used cases on ebay for $40-60
>>
>>16490554
I've known this feel more than once.
>>
>>16490740
>>16490710

Wait, really? I can just buy that $50ish case part and swap it out?

Thank you, based kawasaki! I was ready to spend like $500+ on engine and tools to swap.
>>
So been riding a ninja 300 (inb4 meme bike) for a couple of years and want to upgrade. Am looking at either getting a R6, a ZX-6r 636 or a GSX-R750. Thoughts? Would be new bikes (2017). Also no litre bikes cuz am poorfag.

>>
>>16490834
between the zx-6r and gsx-r750 imo.

The zx-6r has my favourite ergonomics of those mentioned, the gsx-r750 is more compact but still quite comfortable, I'd get the 750 personally.
>>
>>16490879
>new bikes
Idk, cuz I've only ever had used shit and feel like buying a new bike. I know a lot of people seem to advise against doing it as they are more expensive and people say that u change bike every couple of years. But desu, I don't get bored etc of stuff I like so don't really see myself changing bikes regularly.

>>16490890
>>16490904
Tbh I was unsure about the 750 not having TC like the other two. Maybe I'm just being a noob but I was a bit unsure about whether or not it really makes that much of a difference.

Also I like the sound bikes make which have a high redline. Hence the R6 and the zx-6r. Oh and yeah, I haven't sat on any of them yet/taken them for a test ride. So will definitely have to do that.
>>
>>16490937

>Idk, cuz I've only ever had used shit and feel like buying a new bike

IKTF. I hate dealing with other peoples ghetto rigged shit so bought my last bike new. You'd better be prepared to love your baiku forever and ever, because depreciation is a bitch and you will lose your ass on it.

Also check with the insurance man before you pull the trigger. Full coverage insurance on a new supersport bike is fucking expensive. Especially if you're under 25 and/or have tickets. It would suck if you bought a shiny new bike, then couldn't afford to insure it. I've heard of some people paying $1000+ a month for one.
>>
>>16490956
Holy fuck that sound is pure sex

>>16491064
>IKTF. I hate dealing with other peoples ghetto rigged shit
This is exactly how I feel. You never know what other people have done to the bike, how they broke it in etc. Also, I don't care about depreciation as my enjoyment of the bike > any depreciation cost.

>check with the insurance man
I will. This is legit why I don't want to get a litre bike. As they are in a league of their own when it comes to insurance even compared to 600cc bikes.

Crackle ect is caused by unburnt fuel ending up past the engine in the exhaust. Without a turbo you will need to cut ignition in some form to allow the fuel to skip, increasing the idle may help but really isn't going to do much

You literally just bash the cat converter out of the muffler and you get the snaps crackles and pops.

>I don't know how carbs work the post

On most carbs the idle adjustment screw simply pushes against the throttle linkage and adjust where the throttle stops closes. That means it has no effect unless you're idling.

The crackling and popping you're looking for is caused by rich jetting and aggressive cams with plenty of overlap. Overlap means that as the piston approaches TDC at the end of the exhaust stroke the intake valve(s) are open at the same time as the exhaust which helps push the exhaust gasses out and let's the cylinder start filling up with fresh fuel and air in preparation of the intake stroke. This overlap has the unintended side effect of letting fresh fuel and air into the exhaust which explodes in the exhaust system causing pops and crackles on deceleration
>>
>>16491666
I don't want to die
I also would very rarely be using the thing, and not taking it on the highway

My only real question still is if 1500 is too much to spend for 50cc, or will it feel much better in the twisties then it's cheaper moped counterparts

>i don't want to die

FYI, going faster than 30mph on anything with two wheels is going to possibly kill you no matter how you're sitting on it unless you're wearing a motoGP-tier suit of airbagged armor. If anything, you're definitely going to die because mopeds and scooters are less conspicuous and usually exist among traffic.
>>
>>16491765
>spending 1500 on a moped
>to go to the twisties

It's just stupid. For less then 1000 you can have a normal bike, which is better suited for the twisties. Mopeds are city vehicles and using it for the twisties is just a waste of time and money.

Stop infighting please, most of you are contributing to the death of this board.
I am getting a moped period, a real bike was never in question. I. do. not. care. how much better a real bike would be.

WITH THAT SAID

Would there be a noticeable handling/fun increase in the Aprilia RS 50 to justify the increased price over a traditional top tank moped?

I'm pretty much sold on the looks already, as the other top tank mopeds in question look like cafe racers after a year in a pick-n-pull.

So my favourite kind of riding is chilled out, "I wonder what's in this carpark", "Man this part of the city looks cool at night" urban exploration.

Riding a really small little scooter at the moment which does fine, and was thinking about a 250 or a 600 twin; would a supermoto suit me more? I don't really need to do hardcore maneuvering, and for some reason both 90s sportsbikes with their crazy graphics and old naked bikes both appeal to me.

So, should I get a sumo for the ease of use, a 90s bike for the sweet aesthetic that can be taken to a track (which I sorta want to), or an old Guzzi that's near me for the whole restoration and chilled riding deal (which also crazy interests me)?
>>
Took long enough for that fucking card to arrive
I even put the date on it to see how long it took
>>
I possible dun fucked up last night lads
ordered 2 piece dainese suit off ebay, the guy said he ordered them and they were a bit too small. Anyway, posted this in another thread and anon asked if they were made in ukraine. I googled around and saw all this shit about how theres loads of fake dainese leathers from pakistan etc. Anyway, I was wondering whether anyone knowledgable on the subject could look at some pics of the stitching etc and tell me whether they are actually fake or whether it's legit, but just an old suit.

http://imgur.com/a/TLAge
>>
What's the best angle to lower the asking price of a bike? Tyres, valves etc I've already considered, but anything I didn't think about yet? The bike has roughly 40k kilometers on the clock

pic related inner stitching. The label thing with the pictures of other Dainese suits looks legit, i've seen that on genuine jackets. it's obviously a vintage piece if legit, but i've heard more modern suits have double stitching, this seems to only be single stitched

Thanks for the help boys

SUMOs can be impractical. They can be not much more than a motorized thin seat with a peanut for a gas tank and no wind protection at all. Which doesn't mean they're probably also tons of fun when doing retarded SUMO things.

By "90s bike for the sweet aesthetic" I imagine you mean a sportsbike? Older ones are top heavy and unwieldy at slow speeds. Also, very little power down low and/or less-than stellar behavior in slow speeds due to how their carbs were set up. They also run hot and use a lot of fuel. It's definitely doable though.

The Guzzi is a matter of personal taste 2bh. Just know that there's a _lot_ of money on your attached pic. You can also find yourself spending an inordinate amount of time wrenching. Way more than what you thought you were going to be. This one I can say from experience.

Anyhow my post came out as almost completely negative which isn't what I was going for. You can do your favorite type of riding on any bike honestly. I'd go for a middleweight naked. You can find them in almost all engine configurations from 500cc to 800cc and they can also fit a variety of budgets and riding styles. You can track them too, but if you start to really venture down the trackday rabbit hole, you'll definitely find yourself wanting a sportsbike. So maybe consider that too.

I lost interest in that though.

Many states register or record engine numbers along with frame numbers, so ask the seller t oinclude a bill of sale with their name and address and the engine servial number IF the part you are swapping in has the number on it.

Not that this really matters if you just want t oride it. If you want to sell it, it could matter.

Supersports are too uncomfortable for that almost 60 year old man.

>>16492957
It's not a very strong preference, he's willing to go with carbed if necessary. I guess he just doesn't want to risk having to deal with adjusting / cleaning them if the PO didn't treat them right.

Basically what he wants is
> FI
> reliable
> liquid cooled
> oil filter easily accessible (and as much of the other stuff as possible) for own wrenching
> under 2500 € if at all possible
> available in a 100 km radius around Berlin (possibly 200)
> (mostly) upright seating position
> at least 40 PS
He helped me work on my CB 500, I'm going to let him test ride it this spring and see if he still likes it after that; his previous bike was a 250 two stroke with a mere 20 PS and he happily dailys a 1.6L 2005 Focus so I don't think he'll complain too much about "only" having 50-60 PS.

Hmm, FZ6 might be an option. Could only find them with an asking price around 3k but with some haggling it might go low enough.
CBR600F4i? Too sporty I reckon.

What?
A GSX-R1000 with modified engine internals will sure as shit bite as much as it barks, that*s what it was built for.

awkward problem /dbt/

consider the following:

>went to Home Depot to buy stuff
>noticed my license plate is missing when I got off
>shit....
>backtracked and found it.
>thank God and go back home
>life is good
>wake up today and want to go for a ride
>notice license plate is still unattached
>too afraid to ride to Home Depot to get nuts

suggestions?
>>
>>16493185
it's really just the engine you want Anon, if it's running and he got the valves adjusted...pretty good deal.
>>
>>16492181
You can jump a curb on a sportbike but you'll probably bottom out. They're actually better suited to off roading than city obstacles.

Get an adventure bike instead. Light isn't a big deal if you're not in dirt.
>>
>>16492681
>tfw you buy your anime body pillow a motorcycle even though she literally can't ride

Self riding motorcycles will solve this some day
>>
Is it retarded to own a bike in Chicago? I don't live in the city, actually south suburbs.

Either way, I'm thinking the weather conditions will make it non-viable to ride like 60% of the year. And mostly I'd like to just cruise the country with it.

Also planning on moving to Colorado at some point, maybe the weather would be more accommodating there and I should wait?
>>

>>
>>16493327
If you want to ride all year yes it's retarded, but I get a good 6 months of riding (also living in south burbs here.) Good roads are pretty scarce around here, but if you're willing to ride you can go to Wisconsin or Michigan and find some good shit, plus there are communities, bike shows, and group rides for every possible riding style. And there's even a good size group of /dbt/ anons that ride together.
>>
>>16493366
Doesn't sound too bad.

Do you have any places in mind I can go learn how to ride a bike? I want to get thorough training before I make any purchase.

And, sorry for the pleb question, but is there an ideal bike for cross country cruising?
>>
>>16493385
Yeah a Honda goldwing. But all these faggots will laugh at you.

They look sporty, but it's more of a sport tourer. My buddy had one and I sat on it, the ergonomics where really pleasant. People regularly put tens of thousands of miles on them.
>>
>>16493399
Shit that's expensive to me.
>>
>>16493407
I'll tell him to check it out if one pops up but I doubt it. Right now there aren't any.
>>
>>16493410
You asked for "ideal". Any piece of shit that will make it from one oil change to the next will get you across the country.
>>
>>16493385
Take the MSF course, it's free, but you should sign up soon because it fills pretty fast.

As for bikes your best bet for a beginner touring bike is a Ninja 650, they're cheap and reliable.
>>
>>16493406
Do you just want your plate held on so you can drive to get nuts an bolts? Just tie it on with a fucking shoelace or string or something
>>
>>16493448
shoelace! Thanks Anon
>>
>>16493440
cosigned. MSF is free in Illinois, very unusual, very cool. Look at Harper College for programs in Chicago area.
>>
>>16493440
Seconding the ninja 650, go for a newer gen if possible, the first gen was a tank with a horrible front end. Second gen (09-12 I think) also has a lot of aftermarket.
>>
>>16493440
>>16493493

>>
>>16493504

Because the ninja 650 (er6) is about as powerful as a wet fart
>>
>>16493504
650 ptwin, it's got an easy torque curve and maybe 60 horsepower.
>>
>>16493504
Are you saying it would be dangerous for me to go for that bike even if I take every safety precaution and put myself through extensive training even before purchasing it?
>>
>>16493521
it's a fast bike, and a good bit heavier than a 300 or something, but if you're careful and not an idiot (and don't ride like you have a death wish) you'll be fine.

The versys 300, bmw g310gs and ktm 390 rally are coming out soon too though so you might want to consider those if you want a smaller/lighter bike that's still good for long distance
>>
>>16493521
650s are for beginners
>>
>>16493521
all bikes are inherently dangerous

I started on a Hawk 650 after MSF and my license. Got in an accident within a month.

Just be aware that the bikes in 125-250cc range that they put beginners to turn easier and different than 500+

You'll be fine, just take care and trust your bike. Once you two synergize and get a man-bike relationship going. The skill of the rider and the size of the bike stop mattering

Added benefit of starting at 650, you don't have to upgrade after you're a competent rider
>>
>>16493603
I would go beyond the beginners course. But that sounds like overall good advice, if I try to be careful I can grow with the bike rather than have something I want to move on from once I gain the knowledge to do so.
>>
>>16493603
>The skill of the rider and the size of the bike stop mattering

yeah listen to this guy. might as well start on a busa because skill and physics don't matter

I still find it funny that people will always say you will get bored of a small bike. When in reality those are the guys that will upgrade and still do stupid shit on the bigger bike. Its the mentality of the rider that really matters. You want to go fast and lean like rossi all the time and keep getting bigger bikes you will learn what the road feels like on your face.
>>
>>16493678
people who say that can't into corners and only know how to have fun on a bike in a straight line usually

Im just sating if you are chasing people like its a race all the time you might want to reevaluate your reason to ride. I love my bikes and its fun to fuck around but people shouldn't chase being the next ghost rider. Not saying not to learn to lean and control the bike just do it for yourself instead of "looking dope".

Lacquer Thinner I took off all my sticker residue on my fart box.
>>
>>16493504
Because CC isn't everything.
The 600cc fuel injected Horned in lessons had 75kw whereas my current single cylinder 600+ dual-sport has just 37kw.

Basically it handles like heavy, oversized and fast moped with awesome suspension, i've ridden in rain, snow, mud, road with no issue. Whereas i managed to lowside the Hornet during rainy exam because i gave a little too much throttle in a corner.

So IMHO a 650 twin engine would be a nice middle ground with decent power but nothing overwhelming.

It took off all the residue better than goo gone. What you do is use a rag wipe the residue off with the thinner and then wipe the remaining thinner off. Just dont leave it on or might dull the plastics.

scrape it off with a razor blade
>>

soak a soft rag/ old tshirt in gas, lay it on the residue and wait for it to soften up. then you can gently wipe it off.
dont scrub at it since the bike plastics are soft any grit will scuff and glaze them if you use much pressure
